Today we talked about what's the best pre emergent. We talked about how pre emergents are best applied and the best time of the year to apply pre emergents. Pre emergent how to and DIY is now possible due to battery powered back pack sprayers. These sprayers allow for proper calibration.
Few myths:
It doesn't matter how thick your lawn is you will still get weed seeds coming into the lawn. Pre emergents set you up for the future not the past. If you haven't been using pre emergents properly until now chances are you will have weeds for a few seasons. Pre emergents do not kill weed seeds. They disallow the weeds from rooting during the germination process. Хобби

I use the 3 month rate only because we end up with hot summer and the pre emergents are no good after it gets above 90 degrees constantly.
Subscribed! Where are you located? Just trying to get an idea when you are talking about months and temps. Sounds like you have longer winters than we have in Arkansas.
Ginja is in Utah
So apparently the liquid is no longer sold and of course it's the better one :(
Im starting up my company in Illinois and want to know exactly how you charge for your services? What do you charge for your services? I know its a sensitive subject.
Bravo! You take the time to read and respond to comments. That more than triples the value of subscribing because you answer questions I didn't yet know I have (had).
Thanks for the feedback Robert. I do my best
Dude you're the best. Venturing away from golf for the past 7 years into ball field management. Thank you so much.
Great to hear!
Really like the way you break things down. Keep doing what you do you are really gifted. I follow a lot of people on you tube but you are my favourite! Brilliant work!!!
Too kind Bill! Thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel. I really appreciate it.
Another awesome video, I am taking charge of our lawn, and taking notes 📝, we did have a lawn service but next year no lawn service, I’m going to be the lawn service, I get it with the commercial service personnel, they can only do so much to each customer’s lawn, but if your lawn service guy won’t talk to you then do it yourself like I’m going to do, Sounds like your business is booming, and you take great pride in providing a great customer service and helping them out and telling them what to do and what is wrong with their lawn, we need more technicians like you or business owners like you in that area, again great information great videos
Thanks Tim. Really appreciate your support.
Very good information! The first person I’ve heard say what breaks down the pre-emergent 👊🏻
Thanks for the feed back! I hope you enjoy the content.
This is seriously the best pre-emergent video out there ... thank you for publishing it. I am now a faithful user of Prodiamine on our 1.25 acre lot in Arizona.
Glad I could help!
This is so good I watched it twice to make sure I took good notes! Thanks!
Thanks Jay!
learn a lot, tons of great videos and knowledge , subscribed! I believe Ginja deserve a lot more views!!
Thanks JCW!!! Glad to know you have my back
Very nice newly discovered videos. What I like about it is that I can hear the education in your vernacular. A lot of You Tube guys I can tell are Google smart and or only know there product from familiarity and not understanding. I am a new subscriber from NJ.
This particular video was killer. A lot better than a whiteboard demonstration.
Huge compliment. Really appreciate it. Any and all feedback is welcome. I enjoy the feedback and doing a better job making lawn care easier.
I have to say I now know why it has to go down so early I always wondered thank you for sharing your knowledge!
You're welcome Andrew!
Thanks for the info. Great video!
Glad it was helpful!
Great info!! In Charlotte, NC...common Bermuda and 2 acres/flat...ordered Prodiamine this morning in 5lb container...looking forward to getting more results with my lawn maintenance. Used post emergent big box store products, kept cut at 2 inches and WOW did that Bermuda grass spread rapidly. Thanks for this info!!!!
happy to help!
Great video.Perfect amount of needed information and background science.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for explaining how this stuff works and breaks down over time and how the other option compares.
You're welcome Jimmy. Thanks for the comment
Best and most informative video (in my opinion) regarding pre emergents for the D.I.Y. person...
Thanks jonathan! really glad to hear that you liked it.
Great Explanation! I am a LCO in CT and this year is horrendous for weeds/crabgrass. I do 2 apps of Dimension .15 full rate and still had issues. I have used Prodiamine in the past and I am thinking next year doing what you have suggested. Also, you mentioned the battery operated backpack sprayer. I purchased 2 Maruyama battery sprayers about 5 years ago. I use them every day and I have not had an issue with either one. They are nicads, but the new ones are lithium batteries. They are excellent. I can spray for 1-2 days on one battery. I keep a spare in the truck.
5 years out of a battery powered sprayer is amazing. Well done. That's way cool.
Thanks for mentioning rain. In central Oklahoma, it's hard to determine with the heavy rains and unpredictable spring weather (some years long and wet and other years almost non-existent) ...all of course appearing just before the ever popular tornado season (which is a whole other subject). Thanks for the great video!
You're welcome!
Hello Pest and Lawn Ginja,
First and foremost, Thank you for all of your very-informative and extremely helpful videos. As a newbie lawn caretaker, your video have helped me tremendously. I finally learnt about preemergents and am very interested in using the Prodiamine on my grass. I am in Michigan, the temps currently are in the 20s-30s. I have Kentucky Bluegrass. I usually see a lot of Canada thistle, crabgrass and some broadleaf weeds on my yard, some dandelions too now and then. I dethatched my grass last year after watching your videos and fertilized it with Propeat, and it really helped, but the weeds still showed up now and then.
I am wondering if this Prodiamine application once the temperature crosses 35, and then a Dithiopyr application in May/June would work for the weed problem I am facing, or do I need to go for something stronger? Thank you.
Another excellent P&LG video! 👍🇺🇸
appreciate the feedback. onward and upward
Welcome!
Love that shirt Ginja, funny !
Thanks! RIP shirt. it was my favorite
Thanks for the knowledge. Subbed
Appreciate your support!
Good stuff brotha. Thanks for the video and info👊💪.
Thanks! Have a great day!
Thanks for the video....I will use this product for my customers thanks...
Great to hear Matt!
Great info. Thanks.
Happy to help!
It must be springtime as I'm watching some Lawn Ginja videos!
Rad!!! thanks for the support
Great! I just bought a huge jug of Prodiamine ! Haha i like the idea of using both, so I’ll buy the dithiopyr
Love it.
Great info I learned a lot..Will share with family indeed..
Thanks for the love A T . appreciate you watching and commenting.
I live in central Minnesota and tried a pre emergent for the first time last spring. I applied the granular treatment just after all the snow had melted and the top 2 inches of soil was soft. We have never had as beautiful of a lawn and weed free all summer.
Great feedback Tom!
What did you use?
@@chrisleighton8749 I ended up using AWARD DIMENSION. No weeds all season long. I use Menards 23-0-3 slow release fertilizer about 1 month after the dimension application then a winterizer in late fall.
@@tomn5880 ok thanks!
Great video and info! Right to the point. I just clicked that red button!
Thanks for your support Matt!!!
Great job !
Love your videos.
I used a granular method of pre emergence, then use the liquid to maintain.
Tenacity is the one I'm trying this season.
I hope it is s effective.
This stuff Is Very expensive.
Thanks! It's NOT a great pre emergent. doesn't last long. I use it for over seeding projects and curative measures for crabgrass and clover. use prodiamine as a primary pre emergent. IT's cheaper and lasts way longer
The greatest shirt ever!!!
100% agree!
well done! Thank you
You're welcome. Have a great day
Applied PRODIAMINE 2wks ago Jan 30, 2020, we had plenty of rain since. Looking forward to some results. Also, we will use PRODIAMINE year-round because of cost over dithiopyr. Working on a fixed income at 75.
Hi PJ! Thanks for commenting. Prodiamine is soo much cheaper. No joke
Subbed! Doing the lawn myself for the first time this year, and your clear breakdowns are invaluable! I have decently established bluegrass/fescue, but it's never been dethatched. Should I wait until the grass starts actively growing before dethatching and then leave a couple of weeks for recovery before prodiamine/dithiopyr?
You can apply pre m the same day. Bluegrass needs a kickstart of nitrogen at the beginning of the season. I would power rake as the soil temps hit above 50 degrees
When I did landscaping we would cut the water off to the Bermuda grass (summer grass) for about 2 weeks before we thatched (power rake) then we would mow as close to the soil as possible and then overseed. Sometimes we would put manure over the seed to help germination and keep birds from eating all the seed.
Great presentation! When to apply duothpor in Florida panhandle zoysia? And where to purchase it?
Please advise and I love your lawn care info! You're The Man! Thanks
Pre Emergent advice for North Dakota please..
Purchased the home May of last year and nothing had been done pre emergent wise. The yard was thin and had pretty bad quack grass. I did a strong over seeding in the fall and was planning and purchased tenacity this year on recommendation to protect young roots from the overseed. I’m purchusasing a ryobi 4 gallon sprayer so would love your advice on what you think I should use this spring to control the quack grass and others. Thanks!
I live in arkansas and have bermuda grass. I did not spray a pre-emergent and had quite a few weeds. I blanket-Sprayed 2-4d amine across the yard. I killed a lot but there are weeds still growing. What do you recommend I do? Continue to spray the 2-4d until fall and then use a pre-emergent? Thanks
Awesome video thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Would I use a pre-emergent to put down on dirt to keep weeds out for this upcoming spring?
Thanks for another great video!.....what are your thoughts on granular pre-emergents vs liquid
liquids spread better. its like painting the lawn.
Ginja, love the channel and have passed along your channel link to a bunch if folks already... can I use speed zone and pro prodiamine together in the sprayer> and is it a good idea to use dye to make sure that I don’t over treat? I have a lot of angles in my yard and proper coverage is tough.
Thanks for the support George! You can mix both those products in the same backpack. I recommend pre mixing in a gallon jug with 50% water. The prodiamine gets heavy and can clump. The pre mix will help dramatically. I'm a fan of the dye as well. I have a newer video about how to properly calibrate and spray out of a backpack I did late fall 2020
Great video wit lots of good information. I live in Georgia and I have a nice size lawn but I am a novice. Can you post a video on the time of year to put down specific treatment preeminent and weed and feed? There are a ton of lawn videos on utube but they all skirt around the specifics. Thanks and keep up the good work.
I've touched on that a few times. the issue is this, it all depends on the ground temps being lower than 50 degrees for a proper application. if you put it down anytime after you run the risk of the weed seeds having already started or completed the germination process. get a digital meat thermometer from walmart and be sure to get your pre emergent down before it hits 50 degrees.
Can you mix these pre emergents with broadleaf sprays like Amine 2 4-d?
absolutely!!! I also recommend a surfactant as well. I always recommend doing a compatibility test before mixing anything together, but my experience has shown that you can mix a variety of lawn care related products with pre emergents.
Thanks for the info and links. I am considering buying the items but I'm pretty sure i'm too late to apply them this year. Had stickers real bad last year. I live in Kansas. Subbed!
Hey Ben! Thanks for the sub. Stickers can take about 18 months to get rid of if they're a biennial like the ones I delt with. If your soil temps are above 55 degrees I would consider blanket herbicide apps every 4 to 6 weeks to ensure they dont get to seed. Then focus on the fall pre emergent.
Great video thanks never used pre emergent before but gonna try it. Do pets need to stay off lawn for a certain time after applying this stuff?
After it dries it's fine. Most of the side effects are via consumption.
You answered my question. Lets say us new joins want to put down Prodiamine in the Fall (and again in the Spring). If we overseed would that cause a problem?
If you apply it in the fall and it over winters then it will cause issues. be sure to run the verticutter or aerator before you throw the seed down in order to disrupt the pre emergent.
You're Great. I like you. Thanks for the info.
I appreciate that!
I’m in East Tennessee. We had to dig up our yard and start completely over last year. As of January we had a beautiful full lush green yard of fescue. We applied granular pre-emergent end of February. (After watching one of your videos, I realize we used a large granular). I want to also apply a liquid pre-emergent. Is this harmful? Which one would I use for my grass and region?
I used Drive xlr8 last summer to kill but it just kept coming back so I want to make sure I stop it before it starts!
After watching some of your videos, I’m thinking of doing prodiamine now and dithiopyr early May. What do you think?
Also I have a battery powered sprayer. Can both of these be applied with that?
Thanks for all your work and helpful videos!
Tara
I like your idea of the prodiamine early spring and the dithiopyr later. keep in mind the dithiopyr only works as a post emergent to crabgrass in the 3 tiller stage.
Would summer be the proper season to put down post emergents such as ortho and round up? or is it best to perform this action in the fall season.
ortho and roundup have a lot of different products. what they're most infamous for is their production of roundup which is a non-selective herbicide that kills all living plants it touches. Its best used when the daytime temps are below 80 degrees
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Love your shirt 🤣🤣🤣🤣💯💯🔥🔥
Hello, I’m in a sandy area in Minnesota. Ive brought in topsoil, and while Im getting the lawn established. Herbicide in late spring and seed in the fall. I have some open real estate for weeds. Not a big deal, Except for the sand burs Ive been pulling by hand. Do either of these work for sand burs? If so how often do you treat the lawn to prevent? And how much time do you need before you can lay seed again?
both of these products will help to disrupt weed seed germination. Sand burs are difficult because of the timing of which they germinate. If you were diligent in the application throughout the season I would say you'll do better than you're doing now. It may not be a saving grace for the first season. I commonly set peoples expectations to 2 seasons. The products do not kill weed seeds. Sand bur weed seeds can stay suppressed for years before they germinate. Regular post emergent herbicides and pre emergents will lead you in the right direction.
Hey Ginja, thanks for sharing. Could you recommend a fairly good pump up lawn sprayer that isn't too expensive ? Thanks, JohnG
This one is my current favorite style. dismiss the vendor I have no clue who they are but this backpack is great. I have 6 of them.
www.amickssuperstore.com/Matabi_Evolution_16_4_Gallon_Sprayer_p/84950.htm
I live in palmsprings California, would you still use the preamergers when temperatures get to 100 degrees?
No . when the temps get above 90 degrees the microbes use up the pre emergents pretty quickly
Hi , thank you for your videos I have used them to fix my lawn in the past, we are in July now and Crabgrass is taking over my yard because I never used a Pre-Emergent , what would you recommend now that the Crabgrass is already in my yard and going strong? Thank you
I have a video on that called Kill crabgrass, dallisgrass, clover in 5 easy steps. check the description of the video for recommended products.
I'm looking at the backpack you referenced, how many uses happened before it broke? Also did you guys run Prodiamine through it and if so what did you do to clean it up after use?
Started acting up after about 200 uses. We cleaned it up and freed up some debris in the pump and it went another 100 uses before it kicked the bucket. Its made for residential casual use. I'm using it right now. I've used it about 20 times and its running well. I ended up having some pressure issues that were resolved by tightening up the spray handle. As long as you don't put chunky products through it and run water through it after using it, i feel like it does a good job. There are more expensive units that I feel are better but you can't beat the price point.
Love your shirt. lol. Great video
Thanks! It's my favorite one
if i did a lawn reno sept. 12 grass looks great now should i wait for the pre emerg. till April? I did use Scotts starter seed with meso. 3 times. lite application yesterday for the 3rd dose. I heard it will take out the new root system even if i do it in April. Also is the Granular version better for slow breakdown if you have heavy rain?
I'm not a huge fan of pre emergents if you can avoid it. If you have a history of weeds Its a preferred method to stop the process of germinating new weeds. it does effect root growth but i wouldn't say i've seen it kill a lawn. the meso apps only last 3 weeks tops as a pre emergent. If you were dilligent on monitoring your ground temps then i would stay that route this season. just be sure to apply it at the right time. crabrass germinates 5 days at 50-55 degrees F soil temps.
I want to seed this fall and again in the spring. I also plan on spraying Prodiamine in the late fall and early Spring. Will I run into any issues? Should I wait a few weeks in between doing each? I live in the North East, thanks in advance, really learned a lot so far
Hey matt. These are great questions. The function of prodiamine is to disrupt the germination. If you overseed and force germination over two weeks you can apply prodiamine 2 weeks later. However, the prodiamine will overwinter causing seed germination disfunction the following spring. IMO you will not have a successfull germination next spring due to the prodiamine application from the late fall. You may be able to get around this little issue by doing a spring aeration or power rake followed by an overseed. Disrupting the soil will cause some failure in the prodiamine pre emergent. You'll need to force spring germination making sure there's plenty of water on the soil. You can then in return apply another dose of prodiamine 2 to 4 weeks later. You may cause other weed seeds to germinate in the process and in return will need to spot spray with a post emerging herbicide.
I am sure its in another video, but what battery sprayer are you going with now since the Chapin didn't work out? I am currently using a Chapin but I am just cracking into the weed control market I am still mainly mow.
I haven't tested any of the others yet. I have had my eye on the echo non battery powered backpacks. They seem to last longer from what I've heard from colleges.

Very well done with some lil jokes... I subscribed
Great to have you PJ! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey, thank you for the awesome info @Pest and Lawn Ginja!
Current soil temp in Central Texas is 55 F @ 4 in, my Bermuda grass is completely green (October 25), would you still recommend to apply Dithiopyr now or wait later when the grass goes dormant?
if your soil temps are that low I would do it for sure. I can't remember off hand if dithiopyr is rated for bermuda. double check just in case.
Pest and Lawn Ginja thank you so much!
When would you do a second or third applications?
depends on the region. When daytime temps get above 85 I hold off until they get back below 85 for a second app
Pest and Lawn Ginja thank you so much! I appreciate it!
I have about 2/3 acre worth of grass to cover. If I were to go for the Prodiamine, what piece of equipment would you recommend for a couple applications a year? That backpack you mentioned?
Checkout my review on the flowzone backpack sprayer. It would make that job 10x easier due to the fact that it puts on 1gpm. meaning you could do 4,000 sq ft in 4 minutes using a backpack sprayer. crazy right!? ..... If you can afford a small 20 gal sprayer and if you have a 4-wheeler I would go that route if you have that much grass. makes the job much easier.
Ginja? What's your thoughts on using granular Dimension (Dithiopyr) over the liquid? I have almost 50k Sq Ft of lawn to treat and continually filling a 4 gal Backpack is just way too time and effort consuming vs filling a 50 - 100lbs at a time in a rotary spreader. Is it as effective as the liquid and which is more economical (Cost $$)?
I have since bought a 26 Gallon ATV Sprayer for when I am doing larger POST emergent treatments (because quite frankly, I know granular Post-E products just suck - you need perfect conditions for the granular to "stick" to the weed) But back on topic....
Now that I have the big sprayer I am wondering if you suggest I switch to liquid application for my PRE-E applications as well.
Thanks for the video. Excellent content.
You'll get better coverage with the liquid and the cost will be lower.
Killing it Lawn Ginja, thank you! Quick question, will recently killed crabgrass here in the Northeast (I know, I’m behind schedule) still hold seeds and still germinate in my lawn if not dug out???
It's more a. question of if the seeds have dropped. It's cyclical for sure . Pre emergents are the easiest way out. The best way is to get the lawns rhizosphere super thick and healthy.
Any recommendations for a new lawn that was hydroseeded last May (out of my control on the timing as it was a new house we bought) and didn't take well? I need to make it thicker but at the same time it was 30-40% crabgrass by mid summer last year. Not sure if I should try to control the weeds first with a pre-emergent or try to fill in the patches with new seeds and fertilizer? Or is there a way to do both and I'm missing it?
tough situation. in an ideal world we would have hoped they would have prepped the soil first. All things considered you may want to look into using Tenacity for its pre and post emergent properties assuming you're planting a cool season grass. I would do a post emerging herbicide to treat first with the tenacity before planting the new seed. I would do 2 tenacity treatments then a 3rd while planting the new seed. I'd hit it every 3 weeks as mentioned above.
Sounds like the only way I can grow new grass and control crabgrass is with Tenacity. Yes I'm in Ohio so cool weather grass is the choice. It's a KY blue/fescue mix which is part of the reason it didn't take well last May/June with the lack of rain and high temps. We didn't move in until a month after they hydroseeded so nobody was around to take care of it.
Hey Ginga I’m doing a lawn renovation and I have a lot of poa annua. I know it germinates in the fall. I haven’t put any pre-emergent down this year. What do you recommend to prevent it?
dithiopyr for sure
Here on the Central Coast of California, we get the wonderful weed called (Malva neglecta) common Mallow. These weeds are the Ironman of weeds, excepting some of the Thistle varieties, which are also very common. Last year, I picked a relatively small Mallow weed from soft/ sandy soil in our yard with a 4-foot root; it just kept going and going! Interestingly, both the Mallow and Milk Thistle are edible, but curses to you ever invasive Yellow Star Thistle- curses, I say!! Haha, I don't use many chemicals in the yard for controlling invasive weeds; I have a sturdy hand-pick and lots of sweat... Thanks, and take care!
we get a ton of common mallow where I'm at too. That's some crazy rooting you get! I use t-zone to knock it dead. works really well.
@@pestandlawnginja Haha, it was one I had mowed over for several months but never pulled it, so it had a chance to extend its roots. Thanks for the T-zone tip, I'll definitely give that a try!
@@pestandlawnginja Do y'all get goat head weeds- the ones that flattened my kid's tires 100's of times when they were young? UGH - I try to eradicate these damn things whenever and wherever I see them!
BEST pre-emergent video ever! TYVM:) One question. How and when do you apply Fall pre-emergent? What is considered late for SC?
If you’re going to do it you’ll want to apply it as the soil temps are starting to get below 70 degrees. You can use a meat thermometer 🌡️ or a temperature meter found on line like green cast
Great explanation
Thanks for the feedback d cc. Glad you liked it. Let me know if you have any questions.
Your the reason i'm redefining my business into Lawn renovation and applications only. Low labor and headaches. I just have a fear of failing. I shut down my Lawn cutting business in 2013 when I ran out of cash flow. I was also burnt out. This part of Lawn care is my favorite.
Push the fear of failing out by understanding all of your business first. 1. overhead, labor, cost of acquiring a customer, building, truck, chemical etc.. Happy to help out where I can. The hardest part of my job is convincing people to educate themselves on how to achieve proper watering hahaha. Enough to make me want to retire. I really like the challenge and I feel like i'm always learning. There are some great products on the market now available to commercial entities.
Hi, need some help! We are probably very late and havent applied a pre or a post emergent. Should we start with a post emergent to kill existing crabgrass and then apply pre emergent? Should we water the lawn a day or two after the post emergent and then do the pre emergent? Ours is bermuda grass. Should we also apply any nitrogen fertilizers? Sorry for all the questions, but I am quite new to lawn care.
Pre -emergents are for pre seed germination. So you would want to apply a pre emergent pre 47ish degrees F ground temp. Post emergents are for when the weed emerges and presents itself to you. Pre emergents need to be watered in and post emergents should stay dry according to the label recommendations. Bermuda grass is a very hungry grass in general. contact your local agricultural department extensions for local recommendations on how many lbs of nitrogen should be applied per season. This number will most likely fall between 4 and 7lbs per season of N.
I want to thank you and also curse at you. Until this spring I was happy with my lawn. But now I'm obsessed. And also now I have the earthwise chipper I have opposite problem of to much browns for my compost pile. It all started when I tried to identify my quack grass. Why couldn't I get rid of this 6'x6' patch over the years. I sprayed normal spray, used weed n feed, and hand picked it for years. I soon realized I had several bad grasses. Quack, poa Anna, and bunching tall fescue. I have painstakingly hand painted blades of quack all summer. I shoukd have nuked an entire zone. But also I think I'm getting lots of quack grass seed germination. My spring overfeeding didn't go real well because I watered to long and the peat moss and seed washed off some big spots. Just a slight slope. Also a few dry hot days fried some baby KBG. But my labor day seeding is growing in much thicker. I used more heavy top soil and peat. And only 7 min water times. All the fescue was cut out and mew sod has blended in. Im getting compliments on my yard again. Oh also you got me using micro nutrients, milorganite, Humate. My neighbor is now feeling bad he has 60% bunching fescue. I know he is. Plus he has big patches of rye. I know he looks at my 100 %KBG with envy. You may have taken away many fishing trips this summer but my yard is kooking good. How deep do I go down this rabbit hole??
Being the Joneses is not an easy journey but when you see the look of envy on people's face it makes it all worthwhile. Nice job slaying that lawn!
When is best time to apply the prodiamine in utah? Is the dose 5.2 g per gal? And you suggest 10.4 g? Also what is a good sprayer for my yard 2500 Square feet. I don't think I need the battery powered . Are any of the hand pump backpack sprayers good
Are either of these products available in granular form? I've got an application at higher elevation where wind is relentless and I'm thinking granular application may be better for this situation as far as controlling the application.
All of these active ingredients can be found in a granular application. the difference is how even you can get a granular to the ground.
I live in Northern California near the Sierra foothills it doesn’t get that cold here between high 30’s and mid 50’s in winter I’m on 5 acres and I want to kill all the grass and weeds that are on the property because the grass though it looks pretty in winter and spring quickly sprouts foxtails. What do you recommend to keep it from coming back year after year. Oh not to mention I also want to get rid of the grass because I live in a high fire danger area too
Great question. I would do 2 apps per year with prodiamine. Right before ground temps get up to 45 early spring and right when the daytime temps get regularly below 80. Between those apps I would consider a treatment or two with dithiopyr assuming the daytime temps are below 85. Most weeds to actively germinate above 85 degrees. Other than that glyphosate (non selective herbicide) will be your friend for killing everything off. You'll need to do a reapplication every two to three months or as the weeds come up. It's important to remember ore emergents disrupt current weed seed germination. If the weed has already germinated over the past 18 months It will still emerge and that's why we call herbicides post emergents.
This is great thank you! I am about to seed Tall Fescue in California - yes I should have done it in the fall. It's too late for pre-emergents so I'll use Tenacity for now. But when can I or should I use pre-emergents once the new grass pops up? (assuming soil temp under 85).
Personnally I would wait until next season. but fall would be perfectly fine. You want to make sure that the grass looks and feels estabished. That can take up 6 months if we're speaking generally.
@@pestandlawnginja thank you!
Dudes my hero 😂
horrible choice LOL
I have a pull behind sprayer can I use it instead of the Chapin backpack sprayer for prodiamine?
Pull behind sprayer would work great. You'll want to do an output test to make sure everything is calibrated correctly. I would get the liquid prodiamine. Just so you know some of the prodiamine can discolor a tank. Little lysol toilet bowel cleaner will get it all out
My funds won’t allow for a sprayer so could you suggest a granular product I could use for pre emergent
Hello,
Can i use these products on my new Zeon Zoysia grass that was installed couple months ago ?
follow the labels and you'll do well.
Lawn Ninja, what would recommend for area you dont want anything growing but has trees *dont want to kill) growing 10 to 15 feet away from area that needs cleared?
Most won't like to hear it but I prefer to use a combination of glyphosate every two months and a combo of glyphosate and pre emergent every other app
scotts says to apply water 2-3 days after puttin on dry lawn, on their weedex bags
yes, weedex. I must have been referring to the pre emergents. sorry for the miscommunication.
Great video! if I want to overseed in the fall when should I put down the prodiamine?
My suggestion would be april of the following season depending on your region and if you decide to water the seed in heavily for 2 weeks when you put it down in the fall time.
Barbra Bell if you want to seed this fall you probably should use tenacity pre-emergent
Thanks!
Question ... I am in AZ where it's been between 95° and 115°F all summer, just about to cool down to mid 80s. The ground temperature just before sunrise this morning was 79°F. What temperature should the ground be at 3" in before I apply my fall application of Prodiamine. Thanks for this video BTW ... it is my go to and I send the link to anyone who might be interested.
As it drops below 70 is ideal!
Can you please clarify the application rates for the Dithiopyr that you have linked (20 ounces total I think)? I have about
The links Liquid Dithiopyr goes down at the rates listed on the bottle. Usually a high rate and a low rate. Granular rates will also be subject to the label rates. Most label use rates are per 1000 sq ft of area. You can determine 1000 sq ft by use of a measuring tape or simple going to Google maps and right clicking and choose measure distance
*Yes that's correct.*
why thank you
I have watched several times... maybe I missed it.. I have 10K lawn, I use a SCOTT Spreader DLX what setting should I use for a 19-3-7(PRODIAMINE) bag of Southern States product... Lastly, it appears I should use the dithiopyr in the spring and the PRODIAMINE in the FALL ?
I'm not sure that the number is listed to be honest. I use mostly spyker spreaders and I'm not familiar with the scott brand spreader. I can tell you that you'll want to shoot for 5 lbs per 1000 sq ft at the bag rate to achieve 1lbs N and also the proper amount of prodiamine. worst case scenario you can mark off 1000 sq ft and also weigh out 5 lbs and play with the dial as a test site.
I'm in northern Alabama area and have Bermuda grass. Would you recommend me spraying dithiopyr in the fall (next week) prodiamine in winter and dithiopyr early spring?
IMO dithiopyr doesn't over winter very well. I generally use dithiopyr early spring. I like to alternate my pre emergents every other year. I find prodiamine overwinters very well.
Do you use a surfactant with dithiopyr?
I have a major Henbit problem. Any suggestions? I’m in Tennessee. And my lawn is Bermuda I usually scalp my lawn for the first cut of the year.
That specific question is more geared towards someone who has warm season grass. I would hit up grass factor or the lawn care nut. If you hit a dead end I will put in the study time and get you an answer
Hey Lawn Ginja, just like to get your input as to what would be the best or recommended granule weed killer for my lawn here in Southern Cal? I have a Marathon II & III which are a tall fescue. I will be applying a per-emergent in the coming fall but need something now for the current weeds... thanks for your help!
Granule weed killer...... for SoCal.....? To be upfront I've never been big on a granular weed and feed. I've seen a few function well for common dandelions but that was about the extent. I know scotts came out with a new granular weed and feed that I've heard was good but I've never had the chance to use it.
Here's a link to the product. You'll notice most of the reviews are mixed. I'm big on spray and using the right solutions for the right weeds. It's difficult to get the product to stick to the weeds. One thing I have suggested is to mist the lawn, spray for 30 seconds or less per station then apply the product. It'll help get some stick. Don't take my advice on the product though, I would read the label and see what happens. The pre emergent is a good decision. I was just there and you could put it down now.

Thanks P.L.G for the tip. I've always been lucky using granule weed killer but lately it hasn't been working so well. I heard some talk about Turflon Ester for marathon grasses, any idea on the effectiveness of that product? Appreciate your time & awesome RUclips channel, keep up the great work!
Easter is basically an oil based 2, 4d. They work well for broadleaf weeds. I have never used it but I have heard of it. I haven't heard of anything negative if that's any consolation. The issue I have with granular is it's difficult to spread evenly. Use rate is the one thing that has to be perfect IMO.
Great information. What can I use to prevent POA?
Any of these work great
HOW DO you apply the granular, on dry grass or have to do it b4 rain comes after applying?????
The granular is activated by getting wet. IMO i would not let the granular sit for longer than a day or two.
I’ve only seen a few Ginja videos and first thought it was a g like in “good.” Later, I heard him say it with a j sound so I thought it had to do with drinking gin. Here, he made a ginger hair color reference and it all makes sense. Though, I’ve only seen brown/tan ginger roots, so I need to go figure that out now.
Soo true! I had a little identity crisis early on whether or not i was going to be the ginger or the ginja. ginja prevailed in the end. good ears my friend.
Great video Ginja. Im in San Antonio with Bermuda in my lawn. When exactly (in the fall and spring) can I apply the Prodiamine? Thanks.
I'm in San Antonio too. Usually October is a good time to apply then reapply February next year.
@@angelnunez2851 thanks for the information. I'm a new homeowner and of course new to all this.
Great Reply Angel! Thank you.
What about using hose sprayer attachments for these solutions? Thanks
It's doable just harder to calibrate and apply evenly
Ok, my soil temp is 56 degrees. I used Tenacity last year. Works great. My question is. There is few Dandelions but getting some creeping Charlie. What can I mix with the Tenacity to kill the creeping Charlie. Thanks for your help.
carentrazone and triclopyr ester.
I live in the North East (NJ). Is it beneficial to apply preemergents in early fall? Have traditionally applied in spring. Thanks!
early fall is the best time. before the ground temps hit 50 degrees.
Ginja, I need to put Prodiamine on 5,000 sq ft of lawn. Do you a video on mix rates? Something for us non pros? thanks
yes! I have a calibration video I made last fall. its a picture of me spraying a driveway
I'm located in Fredericksburg VA and i'm trying to retake control of my lawn which is filled with crab grass due to me outsourcing all of my lawn care needs and then resulting me firing them all! So many factors to consider. Ph of the soil is the big one. PM me on facebook
I'm looking for a good product for my mulch and stone beds, as well as my lawn. Is it safe to say that this would also be a good process for the mulch and stone? We have a LOT of mulch and stone and do not want to spend all season weeding it.
Be fine for mulch and stone. Immediately water it in. You'll run a risk of some temporary staining
