Rochester NY here, we haven't had a drop of rain in 3 straight weeks, all suburban lawns have gone a nice crispy brown.. I've noticed that *no one* is watering their lawn! Awesome.. no need to do it, the grass isn't dead, it's just dormant. It greens right up again as soon as the rain comes back. This lack of rain doesn't normally happen here, its quite rare..it's a nice break from mowing.
I used to live that brown lawn life, but being a homeowner now, I prefer to not surround my home with tinder--People love their random fireworks all summer long and we've got neighbors who like the occasional wood fire even during burn bans. And, hey, some of us like mowing and keeping the lawn maintained year round ;) . Bonus is After replacing my in ground sprinkler heads with MP Rotators half way through last month and installing 0.5gpm aerators in the bathroom faucets, water use is actually down by about 10% compared to last year! Looking to hit 20-25% savings on the next months water usage just from dialing in irrigation a little tighter and cutting the grass just a smidge higher.
I prefer letting nature do its thing. Brown is a lot easier to maintain. Green just means a lot more work. Rain is my arch enemy. With what they charge me for water, and higher for sewage there's absolutely no way I'm watering my lawn. There's not a lot of sense in having to pay for sewage to water a lawn, wash a car, or top off my pool. Especially when the sewage is 15% higher than the water bill. Maybe if I sink a well I might water the lawn, but I hate mowing it so it's counter productive
One of the best purchases I made for the lawn is a wireless rain gauge. I subtract any rainfall we get from the weekly 1 1/2” irrigation. Sometimes we get close to an inch in just a few hours in Florida so I can cut back on my sprinklers for a few days.
Bro! You are awesome! I’ve been watching your videos for along time now, and because of following your steps to a great lawn my lawn is SUPER green and thick and neighbors been asking me how does my yard look so good 😊 Just wanted to say thank you ! 🙏
Great video Allyn. So many people enjoy the simple tricks and you definitely make it easy to understand exactly what these things are providing to the lawn. Good stuff.
Last summer I applied an application of "Seventh Generation" brand natural dish soap on my lawn as it is mostly clay and it had become a bit hydrophobic in the summer heat. It worked well to minimize runoff.

I've use baby shampoo as a wetting agent as well. Go cheap with the Walmart generic. But Hydratain remains my go to agent here in the DFW metroplex where we are in a severe drought.
Yep, used Hyrdatain at the beginning of June here in Garland and grass is trying to hold its own. Both my neighbors (who don’t water) yards are almost dead. ☠️ Been watering hard 2 days (almost the whole day) every week and my st aug is still standing up, green and plush. This is my first year to use Hydratain, and I do think it is helping, although next year I’ll use the granular because applying the liquid is hard work with prewatering and post watering.
@@johnholmes3279 I've used both the granular and liquid Hydratain. I think the liquid is a little cheaper in dollars per 1000 sq ft, and because my irrigation has a few spots with poor coverage, I will also spot spray the weak areas with a little extra Hydratain and water it in with a little extra water.
If you buy the baby shampoo from Walmart the Yard Mastery hose end spray will screw directly into the bottle…and it empties ALL the shampoo. Worked great!
My lawn here in Utah count has started to check check out and I have been doing 1” of water per week I'm so happy about this video I'm going to order some dawn and increase the watering to 1 1/2”
Hydretain has done me wonders in keeping the lawn Greener in the summer. I can usually get away with 2 waterings per week as long as it's not a 100 with full sun all day, everyday
uhh what do we do when it's 100 degrees 7 days a week for >2 months without rain and they only let us water 2x/week. My grass is struggling. This summer in Texas is brutal. Doubt it will rain in the next month or two.
Had 12k sqft of bermuda laid down 3 months ago and it was going good until the heat started. It’s now going on the 3rd week of temps in the 95-105* range here in the Midwest. First month I watered around 25k gals when it was doing great and hadn’t changed it but I’m starting the think it’s due to my rocky soil keeping the soil depth to shallow for the roots to penetrate. Had approx 80 yards of top soil added before the sod was installed.
Dude, I live about 150 miles north of Panama City in Alabama. This area I'm in is just flat out not getting rain. I did all my prep this year, preemergent, aerate, Milo and other fert, diseaseX, liquid aerator/ dethatch, scalped. Started in February and we just haven't gotten rain hardly at all. No forecast for May either. It barely came out of dormancy, got a little drizzle since and it's been weeks, no rain in the forecast either. It's so frustrating I've wasted so much money and can't see the fruit of my labor.
My lawns patchy this year. I regularly mow it with reel mower to 30mm (shorter it looks scalped, longer it looks like a bad hair cut), it’s got a really good colour and looks good from the path but it’s certain areas. First thing I did was check for stones. I will probably oversow in September

Living in a city with watering restrictions and no sprinkler system makes life pretty tough when it comes to watering. I've pretty much left my lawn to fend for itself in the summer. Whatever water it gets comes from the sky. I will drag the sprinkler out once in a great while just to keep the grass alive, but it's an uphill battle so I just concentrate on making the lawn look good in spring and fall.
yeah that's actually a good strategy and it pretty much goes along with what cool season grass wants anyway. It doesn't like being pushed in the summer anyway.
These localized dry spots many people don't know that these are commonly being causes by sod worm or also known as sod web worm. You will see dry spots and a small white moth in your grass. There more common in the south but they've made it up all the way to Ohio some how. And Dawn dish soap will cause these worm/white caterpillars to come to the surface and dye. Put some dawn on these spots and check back on the soil and you will see them if this is the case. 🍻
Great video and information! Just a couple comments from the technical side... the video quality looks great, your sound is right on, and you land the sporadic light humor. For me, as a creative person, it inspires me to see this kind of quality. Thanks!
I am terrible about watering i watered once in two months. My lawns a monster survivor. It was originally soded in the 80s. I am waitting for scotts provista st Augustine to make its way to ga before I do my full renovation of my front lawn
Where I live in Northern Calif foothills, the soil is terrible. I can't even put a shovel into the ground. The summer heat always stresses my front lawn during the typical 100 degree summers. Lots of patchy areas where the lawn looks like hay. I tried Simple Lawn Solutions Liquid soil Loosener and it brought back a lot of green within a couple of days. It's extremely concentrated and one quart will do 32,000 sq feet. But it's pricy at $35. If Dawn does the same job, I'd go with that less expensive option!
Why does this seem to be such a problem this year? Neighbors' yards, too. Our lawn was lush and green last year and we're not doing anything different this year!
@The Lawn Care Nut You mentioned there will be a quart and gallon hose in (Four Play), but if I wanted to put this into a back pack sprayer, what is the rate? 5oz per 1k sq ft?
i should have hit it with the hydretain a month ago. No irrigation, and only hand watering the front lawn. I use a little plastic rain gauge, put down only 0.2" in 30 minutes. Got quarter inch rain yesterday too. Need to only survive another month or so until fall renovation. That Sun high in the sky is the main problem. Once the angle comes down, its not so bad, and the lawn recovers.
Unfortunately, my lawn has gotten so scorched I fear there is little hope for the summer. Today is expected to hit 109 in central texas, and even over night it barely gets down to 80. Severe water restrictions and well, here we are.
That's what happens when Biden takes away your rights. He's using a death ray pointed at the Earth to increase temps and make us all suffer. True story.
I keep getting the same brown dead spot on my lawn on a particular section . I have changed the sprinklers and water it manually every two days to no avail. I am going to try the dawn diy and see what happens. Oh by the way, I have St Augustine and I do live in SoCal.
that new product from Ecologel looks LEGIT! Cant wait to try it. Also just put down Stress blend. Planning on doing humic treatment soon so maybe i'll add in some Dawn!!
I didn’t know that they change the birds on Dawn depending on what birds are at the latest oil spill. That’s both terrible that they know they’ll have another in the future, sad because it affects different types of birds, and quite uplifting, because at least they’re doing something and raising awareness about it. Crazy.
Boy that Royal Palm sure is a grower bet he enjoys some fourplay along with the lawn. lol. But fr tho that palm is loving life cause I remember how little it was when you planted it only a couple years ago
Glad to hear you pushing the dawn treatment and tuna can checking. I've been recommending that for over 20 years. Now, about the roots "chasing" the water... not sure. I was always taught that roots do not grow through dry soil looking for water. They grow in response to where the water is. Therefore, less frequent, deeper irrigation is your friend... just as you mentioned.
@@Icysoles60 There are many variables such as soil type and condition, climate and elevation, turf species, irrigation system efficiency, etc. In a nutshell for a general response, 2 x per week watering (sans rainfall) with a duration of around an hour should apply 1.5-2” of water per week.
Awesome tips 👌 I also watched Jesse's video beforenI watched yours. I wondered Hydretain wouldn't be good enough ? 😜 2 days ago, I applied Hydretain mixed with liquid aerator (baby shampoo or dawn does the same thing?), humic&fulvic acid and kelp, then watered in. I irrigate my lawn a bit less than 1" per week with above ground sprinklers. Hydretain is definitely helping my grass stay green in summer. I haven't used Dawn with Hydretain. if it's the same as liquid aerator, I will switch to dawn for sure to same money!
Today is 7/28/22 here in Texas. My lawn is “CRISPY” light brown in color. It has Oak Leaves Mulched mixed with sand (No Dirt) I have been watering at dawn & I only have “here & there” green shoots of grass growing under the oak tree shade. Would you have a video with a Sandy lawn this is the condition I bought my home with 😁 “HELP”
Agree with cheap baby shampoo below. Comment for youtube algorithm- supporting you as the next best thing to paying you real money for your time and effort and all the useful tips over the years.
I noticed in the 2-ish minutes of footage applying the dish soap, you only went through 1/3 - 1/2 of the hose end sprayer capacity; and I'm sure some of that spraying time was edited out in post. Is there something I can do to slow mine down to a more similar rate? I feel like mine practically empties after 2 minutes, and it is impossible to move fast enough to cover the recommended area (not soap - thinking of air8/rgs)
On a serious note, last year I started using Liquid Aerate (basically dish soap) and it really helps. The lawn has looked better and greener this year even with the drought and I've been using less water. My front lawn is on a hill and in the past the water would run right off and into the gutter. I don't get near as much run off now which means that water is soaking into the soil on the slope. I'm also using hydratain and humate. The combo has been extremely effective.
I live in NE San Diego County we get really hot in the summer since we're considered high desert, plus, CA is experiencing a 3 year drought. I refuse to take out my 150sf of Bermuda grass, yes just 150sf. It's my little patch of green. In early July it went into dormancy. I didn't understand at first, I wasn't sure if I had overwatered or underwatered it, nevertheless, it looked dead. Going on RUclips explained what was happening, and I happened on your video about watering agents. I have bought a sprayer and the Dawn (Duck) dish soap, however, I'm unsure at figuring the correct amount of Dawn to use for my 150sf patch of Bermuda grass, also for the follow up with the Dawn and Hydretain mixture. If you could help with the measurement amount I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks JJ
Question for you Allyn; I need to put down some lime and some Humic 12 in July. Is it a good idea to throw down the Lime and Humic, then water it all in with the Dawn dish soap treatment to push those product down deep?

These localized dry spots many people don't know that these are commonly being causes by sod worm or also known as sod web worm. You will see dry spots and a small white moth in your grass. There more common in the south but they've made it up all the way to Ohio some how. And Dawn dish soap will cause these worm/white caterpillars to come to the surface and dye. Put some dawn on these spots and check back on the soil and you will see them if this is the case. 🍻
I love Jerry Baker. Have and follow some his literature and DIY recipes for over 40 yrs.
Dawn works great especially along the concrete where the lawn gets extra hot.
108 here around New Braunfels, TX tomorrow..... It's been 100+ since May here with maybe an inch of rain since then. Tough times down here lol
Great video and information! Just a couple comments from the technical side... the video quality looks great, your sound is right on, and you land the sporadic light humor. For me, as a creative person, it inspires me to see this kind of quality. Thanks!
What I do instead of the tuna cans is use a digital rain gauge and put it in different sections of the lawn for very accurate measuremens
but then you don't get the benefit of the protein!! 😂
I am terrible about watering i watered once in two months. My lawns a monster survivor. It was originally soded in the 80s. I am waitting for scotts provista st Augustine to make its way to ga before I do my full renovation of my front lawn
This video was great... the style the vibe the editing... always learning something from you bro
Legend has it, this man made the Columbia river with his wetting abilities
😂😂😂
Timing was perfect. Heard about the baby shampoo- now it’s Dawn. Would a Hi -Yield Spread Sticker Non-Ionic Surfactant do the same?
yes those are all pretty similar and would do the same thing so get what is cheapest for sure.
Great information Alyn 👍! I have used baby shampoo too like someone else commented on earlier.
yep, pretty much the same effect, just a different smell 😂
Thank you my Sir! Mike from Connecticut here.. 👍🏾..
Great video!! Just did an application of baby shampoo on my lawn tonight.
I watch a lot of lawn care video guys make a lot of lawn care jokes and yours are the best
Lololz. FourPlay to eliminate dry spots. Absolute classic.
Can't make that up !! 😂
If she's over 60 be sure to bring the antacids and stool softeners.
Why does this seem to be such a problem this year? Neighbors' yards, too. Our lawn was lush and green last year and we're not doing anything different this year!
Check the ph of your soil.
@@joshua7999 OK. Thanks for the tip.
I just love his sense of humor 😂
@The Lawn Care Nut You mentioned there will be a quart and gallon hose in (Four Play), but if I wanted to put this into a back pack sprayer, what is the rate?
5oz per 1k sq ft?
Good afternoon everybody
NICE that you give kudos to Jerry Baker....
I use a liquid aerator...is that different than Dawn soap?
I find it really helps!
Probably/maybe ammonium lauryl sulfate, all wetting agents that do a good job of breaking up and penetrating compacted soils.
you da man! I am subscribed to alot of yard card channels but yours is always the best thanks again 👍
It also is an awesome bubble machine for your kids to enjoy while you water it in haha. Great video. I’ll need to do this
We use a polymer in the orchards it absorbs at night then releases at night good for a few months look cool on dirt it’s shiny
This summer is hammering my lawn. I'm in that Utah drought and have had to cut back on the water. My lawn is looking a bit disheveled.
fall time will be here before you know it!
i should have hit it with the hydretain a month ago.
True story.
Man, this sucks. ( from a Northern California resident)
Central Texas here too! I hear you! Grass is still green, but starting to look limp. I'm glad I saw this video! Great tips!
@@dawnmitchell11 you guys at least have humidity, I would think that helps w/ grass color - life right?
This lawn care video saved my marriage!
👍😂
Thank you for this. New York we are experiencing a heat wave. Which dial you suggest putting the hose end sprayer. My instincts is saying 1oz.
I keep getting the same brown dead spot on my lawn on a particular section . I have changed the sprinklers and water it manually every two days to no avail. I am going to try the dawn diy and see what happens. Oh by the way, I have St Augustine and I do live in SoCal.
Great video and advice. Plus really like the mention of Mr Baker (RIP)
that new product from Ecologel looks LEGIT! Cant wait to try it. Also just put down Stress blend. Planning on doing humic treatment soon so maybe i'll add in some Dawn!!
sounds like a party!
I didn’t know that they change the birds on Dawn depending on what birds are at the latest oil spill. That’s both terrible that they know they’ll have another in the future, sad because it affects different types of birds, and quite uplifting, because at least they’re doing something and raising awareness about it. Crazy.
God… lube deep… tuna! 😂😂😂😂 I can’t 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Amazing, how a great lawn tip, could also be a relationship tip. Thanks for sharing.
Lmao you get a like for that wetting agent. And just watched the whole video. Laughed the whole way through
Boy that Royal Palm sure is a grower bet he enjoys some fourplay along with the lawn. lol. But fr tho that palm is loving life cause I remember how little it was when you planted it only a couple years ago
Good eye bro!! It gets all the fert I put in the lawn and it loves it 🤘
Glad to hear you pushing the dawn treatment and tuna can checking. I've been recommending that for over 20 years. Now, about the roots "chasing" the water... not sure. I was always taught that roots do not grow through dry soil looking for water. They grow in response to where the water is. Therefore, less frequent, deeper irrigation is your friend... just as you mentioned.
Can you elaborate on the "less frequent, deeper irrigation part"?
@@Icysoles60 There are many variables such as soil type and condition, climate and elevation, turf species, irrigation system efficiency, etc. In a nutshell for a general response, 2 x per week watering (sans rainfall) with a duration of around an hour should apply 1.5-2” of water per week.
Can you use Ajax ??? Or does it have to be dawn?
@@Authenticrunclub Most likely... but I have only ever used dawn.
I don’t know what’s more impressive that new thinner and ripped look your sporting or the four play coming soon😂
Awesome tips 👌 I also watched Jesse's video beforenI watched yours. I wondered Hydretain wouldn't be good enough ? 😜
2 days ago, I applied Hydretain mixed with liquid aerator (baby shampoo or dawn does the same thing?), humic&fulvic acid and kelp, then watered in.
🤣😂😅👍
Same here. Crispy brown desert lawn. I don’t think there’s any coming back from this.
Bro get rid of the lawn and put in something better like drought resistent plants. Having a lawn in a desert is the most stupid thing ever
My lawn always loves a good petting.
Thanks for the tips, but the commentary, GOLDEN!! 🤣🤣👏🏼
This tip will go a long way in Hotlanta. Your hilarious dood !
Another tough lawn year for me, not a lot of rain, and now I have billbugs back again this year even though I put down grub ex this spring.
I just became a home owner and laid sod recently. Your channel is awesome, love the jokes 😂
Love the humor Allyn!
Great video! Lots of laughs 🤣
Thanks JJ
I'm glad you took the bokeh off. The background blur looked bad. Thanks for the video.
😆😆 am I allowed to thank you on this video??? Lmao
😂😂😂
"Lube up, go deeper, she'll like it"
"Penetrater, 4 play"
😆😛😆😛
This was great 😅🤣
Question for you Allyn; I need to put down some lime and some Humic 12 in July. Is it a good idea to throw down the Lime and Humic, then water it all in with the Dawn dish soap treatment to push those product down deep?
