Also, in the interest of conveying design concepts I will fully accept "armature" and "directional change-y bit" as valid terms. Your videos are always gold for investigating the fine minutiae of everyday objects most people don't notice....Im over 30 and have wondered how these work since I was a kid but never got around to actually looking it up. So thanks for the minutch.

When I was little, my parents would spend the summer vacation in italy, tuscany to be exact.
On the way there, in the summer heat, I would ALWAYS hear these guys.
It has been at least 15 years since I have been there. But the memories, I still have them.

Fun and educational. I too have been fascinated by water sprinklers and ever since I was a kid I have always wondered how they work. Looks like there's a lot going on in there. So I will still need to watch this video multiple time to really understand how they work.
If you think this is cool, I've always been fascinated by the mechanics of 'traveling tractor sprinklers,' I'd love to see a breakdown of this mechanical tech too. Good stuff.
I use sprinklers in the yard by pumping lake water through a cheapo harbor freight pump and my lawn loves me for it. I'm going to tell my lawn to watch your videos from now on instead of relying on me to move the sprinkler around.

Paper clips are more nuanced than people give then credit
I've always observed that, depending on how the loops of the paper clip and the paper are sandwiched, the paper clip has more or less grip.
Unless we're talking about those binder clips, which have a grip so strong, I use them to seal potato chip bags because the ones advertised for actual potato chip bags are never strong enough for whatever reason.

A girlfriend once asked me a question about something she was curious about, and since she knew me, she said, "and I don't want a four page dissertation, just a short explanation." Then, I imagine because she was trying to think of the most boring topic she could think of as an example, she added, "nobody wants to listen to a lecture on concrete." But of course concrete is a really interesting topic, so I gave her a two sentence explanation of that first!
@@joshbobst1629 there have been several things where a friend would ask an explanation of why i did something the way i did, and in order to explain it properly, i first had to explain two or three other concepts in order to have half a chance of understanding the final logic of it.
I am posting before reading this because for some reason impact sprinklers are my thing. So simple yet genius, and oh so satisfying to water my lawn with. Lets hope this is as interesting as I think it will be.
I dont think I've ever heard someone imitate, or even try to imitate the sound of an impact sprinkler, but you did it so well.

A pet peeve of mine -- when you are talking about absorbing energy, the word to use is "damped", not "dampened. Although, with a sprinkler, this may seem appropriate.

This is a dope presentation on the functionality of this amazing invention. Well done!!
There are a couple of features of this sprinkler that were not explored as deeply as the basic functionality.
It appears that the set screw, in addition to interrupting the flow of water, shortens the range of motion of the “spoon”. I would assume this has a limiting impact on the hammering effect slowing the rotational motion. The hat redirects the flow of water downward, but also seems to limit the power of the hammer.
The reason I bring up these two adjustments, and the reason I watched this video, is that I
have been attempting to use this type of sprinkler in my relatively small back garden. I am working to limit the height of the flow to direct it just to the plants, and not to irritate my neighbor as the flow penetrates my fence. When I do this, the sprinkler has difficulty turning, or having enough force to trigger the opposing rotation.
I would love to see a supplemental video on the functions of these aspects of the sprinkler, and hear any suggestions on achieving the desired result.
Cool video! I was fascinated by these as a kid growing up in the 1960's and 1970's. We played in them and I laid down very close to one on a hot summer day and examined it closely and played with the springs and armatures to understand how it worked. Of course, I grew up to be an Engineer.
Sometime I have the feeling that he just walk with close eyes in his house, and the first thing he stumbles accros is chosen as his new video. And I like it.

@@hermask815 Droughts, im sure. I remember when I was younger, we had water restrictions (such as no watering your lawn, maybe not even hosing down your car). Not sure if they ever went away, but its just not a done thing where I'm from. Just wait for the rain to water the grass... when it comes next summer, with storm season.
@@zachj61 Makes sense and when water is limited, well the kind that won't kill plants at least I wouldn't at all be surprised if other methods than flinging water through the air is ecouraged. Straight into the ground or at least at the ground with plants above it probably prevents a whole lot of evaporation that'd normally happen with sprinklers like this both in the air and on top of the leaves and what not where it lands, definitely more work to set such methods up.
However I'm sure you still have a lot of that other kind of sprinkler one hopes never to see used inside buildings. Never seen them in use but I expect those good old fire sprinklers are quite good at ruining electronics which is scary, then again fire will do that as well while also hurting humans and possibly the structural integrity of the whole building. As long as they don't get triggered by a false alarms they are a good thing.
@@tokeeptrackofrandomsubs5899 Indoor sprinkers? Not sure if ive seen those outside of film and tv, but i dont go looking for little installments on ceilings. I wonder how effective they really are. In a lot of places, electrical fires would be the likely source, or perhaps an issue with oil would mean those might be dangerous. But water restrictions dont affect those.
Fresh water is actually getting rather scarse these days. Used to be that youd just use a river or a well, and youd have enough for everybody, but there are many places that would dry up rivers and lakes, partly due to population growth, and partly because of agriculture and industry usage, which is very high. Desalination plants to remove salt from water are expensive too, so we will start having more problems like this soon.
The impact sprinkler was invented by Orton Englehart in 1933. He was a farmer in California. Before that, the only way to irrigate a crop was by flooding ditches running between the rows, a method still used in third world countries today. For me, the sound of impact sprinklers is the sound of summer.

I believe the impact wrench gets its name from its predecessor, which is a manual impact driver that has a spring loaded base that, when hit with a hammer, will turn the driver ever so slightly. They're for getting really stubborn fasteners off!

One more layer is that the pop-up rotation-damping mechanism also makes it compensate for different water pressures automatically. Lower water pressure means slower exit velocity means lower spoon swing speed. That would make the head rotate slower or not at all, if it weren't for the fact that the rotation damping mechanism is actuated by water pressure as well. Because of that, lower water pressure means that the head doesn't pop up with quite as much force, which means it's slightly easier to rotate, which means that the slower spoon still actuates it appropriately.

Orton Englehart, a citrus farmer in CA patented it in 1935, but he preferred farming so that same year he sold the business to Clement and Mary Elizabeth LaFetra, whose descendants still operate the company today - Rainbird (taken from the Native American legend of a bird that brought rain).

Wasn't till I watched this that I realised I always wondered how these things worked.
The craziest (or maybe most coincidental ) thing about this video, is I literally just bought THAT _exact_ same sprinkler for our yard this year. I chose it because its' the only one I found that was made of metal parts, vs so many sold nowadays made from plastic. I felt it would stand the test of time vs the plastic ones. However, our direct neighbors do have a couple of the plastic ones, and here's what I immediately noticed: The plastic ones spine SO MUCH faster than ours, (the metal one). And I wondered why that was... Well, know I know. Metal weighs substantially more than plastic, which means the water will have less force on the metal one, meaning slower clickity-clickity-clickity and slower bap-bap-bap-bap-bap-bap to the return position.
I know I know --> "cool story bro", but I just thought, what are the chances that I just bought the exact same sprinkler, considering I've never seen this brand/model prior-to my purchase. 😁

2 years later… I grew up with these on our dairy farm as a child and took them for granted. However, I just bought one of these a few days ago and spent 20 minutes playing with the amazing mousetrapedness of it all. As a physics-teaching adult, I have never appreciated it more than I did a few days ago! These things are truly amazing! They are WATER CLOCKS!!
I once observed a very clever deer use its hoof to halt the motion of the "armature" on one of these sprinklers allowing it to drink from the uninterrupted water stream.
