Let me throw a question back at you Quen. What type of grass do you have? It seems like you live in Florida. Which grass is dominating your lawn? St Augustine or Bermuda? Since you have a warm season grass you can use Blindside as a post emergent for that crabgrass and Certanity to take care of that Tall Fescue in your lawn.
@@PoloFieldsLawnService I'm in Texas. It's probably at 60 40 with St Augustine being the most. I could honestly go either way. @@Qdarnell89 My honest opinion is if that Bermuda is coming from your neighbors lawn, it's gonna be HARD to keep it out. Lawn looks amazing.. and loving the content on the channel !! do you suggest changing the height of cut during warmer months? I tried that and seem to get more disease pressure when I raise the HOC
Hello Matthew, I'm assuming that you have a cool season lawn. There is mixed opinions on this but I raise my mower in the summer months. I also will apply fungicides to keep the disease away and I watch my watering schedule. I've seen diseases get in higher cut lawns and lower cut lawns. In my opinion, if you have a good stand of turf, PROTECT YOUR LAWN at all cost.
Thanks for your video, much appreciated. Do you have any suggestions for amending the soil over a septic tank? That one section always dries out before anything else. Thanks
Hello Marcos, watering will be your best option. Have you thought about using a timer to water your lawn? This could be very helpful if your not at home. You can set it at whatever time and day that you want it to water your lawn. Hope this helps
In Vancouver we are only allowed to Use a Sprinkler once a week for 1.5 Hours Saturdays... The higher the population the less water allowed to use unfortunately
hi Great video, what is your recommendation for brand new sod. Right now itslike 98 degress. How many times do I water per day. Someone told me 2 times per day but I don't think that is enough
Bruh, my shhh is dead, Grass like hay, dirt and its st Augustine grass, I'm in south Texas with this drought and we on water restrictions, water like once a week. Next week suppose to get down to the 90s and sum rain, I'm thinking I should rake up all the dead hay grass, rake the dirt to open it up and seed up, this sound good or should i do something else or nothing at all since winter coming, I don't want this hay next summer. 😢
Ok, so this is a loaded question. FIRST, that grass is dead because of the possibility of 3 things. Number 1, heat stress. Number 2, Insect damage and Number 3, fungus. You need to find out WHY it's like that FIRST. If it's insects, it possibly will be chinch bugs or grub worms. If you're using professional products, use Dylox for the grub worms and Demand CS for the chinch bugs. If you're using products from the local store, use bioadvanced 24 hrs. If it's a fungus, it could be anything, and I would need to know specifically. If it's heat stress, water will cure that. So, the plan of action should be to clean up that area that has the dead grass in it. When you mow, BAG ALL OF YOUR CLIPPINGS. It would help if you aerate that area where the grass is dead and gone. Find out if it's insect damage or fungus damage. Spread some Peat Moss over top of that damaged area and water it in. From now on, cut your grass low. That St Augustine grass will spread in those dead areas. Just keep watering those areas. If you want to kick it up a notch, add some 10-10-10 to your grass and the dead areas before you put the Peat moss down. This should help 👍🏾
@@PoloFieldsLawnService lol you say those areas, ITS MY WHOLE YARD! it's either dirt dry or just crunchy hay grass, I'm pretty sure it's the heat cuz just about every one's grass in my neighborhood yellow looking or just dirt. It's been bad this summer with no rain, SMH 😔 But I'll look into it, thanks for the reply! 👍
I'm curious your preferred watering hours and frequencies. Do you recommend once a day (If so, what time in the morning - 430 AM or 6/7AM), or twice a day morning and evening (with water amounts shared between the two watering times). Or possibly AM/Lunch/PM (However, I am always worried about watering mid day which in heavy heat can fry yards). For context, I have an in ground yard. Secondary Question: I had a few heats spots earlier in the summer I was batteling. I was curious if maybe there wasn't enough nutrients in the soil. Do you think adding additional topsoil with nutrients in the fall could help those areas the following year?
@jamesdreiling1253 Hello James. When you water your lawn, you're trying to give your lawn at least 1 inch of water per week. It really doesn't matter what time that you water your lawn as long as you don't water in the middle of the day because of evaporation from the sun and not at night when we are In a disease window. I will normally water my lawn early in the mornings, starting around 430 or 5 am. Heat spots are generated by something holding temperature, heating up that general area. For example: rocks or stumps in the ground, grass up against a house, grass on the edge of your sidewalk or driveway, a sewer drain in the middle of your lawn. Any of these things and several more can cause heat stress in spots. A lack of nutrients won't be the case. A lack of water in certain spots will be. Keep an eye on these spots for future reference. If you can do something about it, great, but most of the time, you'll just have to add more water in these areas
@@PoloFieldsLawnService - Thank you, this is very helpful. I suspect I have some large roots under one section of the yard, which is causing my hot spot. I will make the appropriate changes and hope to get this pain point area more water!
Here in New Zealand 🇳🇿 it’s peak winter. Where I live we’ve had a record 6 month drought over spring summer 21/22, followed by a record wet since recordings began. We’ve had constant rain and flooding, week after week, day after day, my poor lawn is really suffering, so I’m going to have major work as we go into spring.
If your lawn goes into dormancy and it's already Sept, should you just leave it alone since winter is around the corner and it will go into dormancy in a few months anyways?
Great question, and it's funny that you asked this. I have a video dropping this weekend that will directly answer your question. It's too much to type, so I hope that you will tune in to view the video 🙏🏾
Hey Polo, I know you stay in Kentucky, and you most likely have tall fescue or KDG grass, but what about the folks that’s a little further south and have Saint Augustine. Do you have any videos or tips for Saint Augustine grass?
Here's a tip, get you a hose connector spray bottle 32oz is the norm. Put in 4-8oz of dawn dish detergent or Johnsons baby shampoo fill the rest with water. Should cover 3-5000sf. Spray it across your lawn then water it in with your hose or sprinkler system. Put down 1in of water weekly. You'll start to see you lawn recover in about 4 days or less. It'll fully recover in less than 2weeks! This treatment will last for about a month.
If it is gonna cost you that much, bring it down to maybe 1/2 inch. As long as your lawn is receiving some kind of water during this drought. Please don't go into debt by trying to keep your lawn watered. I would hate that.
I give 1in water twice a week, do you think the day I don’t give water can I run irrigation for like 8min cycle every morning so the leaf blade can dry before night? Thank you
1 inch of water a week is good enough. 2 inches of water a week will have your water bill sky high. When you water your grass, water it early in the mornings, preferably before 10 am. Also, there's ni need to water your grass every day. It needs a little time to dry out. I water mine 2 days a week. So if we don't receive any rain, I'll water it on Tuesday mornings and Saturday mornings.
I’m not in a position to have a sprinkler system set up, I drag garden hose’s and a single sprinkler around every weekend because it is all I can do time wise, I have heat stress like crazy and can’t keep up with it unfortunately
@@mikehannahs I'm in the same boat as you. I drag sprinklers around for my backyard. All that you can do is try your best. We're just trying to make it to September so that we can fertilize it and bounce the lawn back to its natural state
In my very nice neighborhood 1000 gallons of water is about $15 so with the average sprinkler you can literally water your yard for 6 to 8 hours and it’s about 20 bucks
It will only create issues if your not using a fungicide and if your watering late in the evening or at night. Watering in the mornings and using the proper fungicides at the right time will keep fungus out of your lawn.
Great stuff Mr. Polo. My new sod was doing well for the first 3 weeks and had taken root. I decided to back off on the watering and also had been bringing down the HOC at the same time. Bad move. Heat and humidity were high and lawn started to stress out. Was advised to start watering again and this time measure the irrigation output. I have those little yellow cup gauges from Amazon and was surprised to see how much or actually lack of water was really getting down. Now back on track. Watering is key. 👍💚🦸
How did your watering schedule keep up with this 2024 summer? I believe this 2024 summer was the hottest/longest since I moved to VA, and the watering couldnt keep the grass green.
@RobinPetertoPayPaul I just stayed consistent with my schedule. I watered each section twice a week anywhere between 30 mins to 1 hr. Each section has a different watering schedule. The only time I didn't water was when it rained.
@@PoloFieldsLawnService I doubled check and it looked like I don't have fungus. I can pass my hand on top of the brown grass and it just flakes off like it's dead... smh. I do see baby blades peaking up with no signs of fungus. I don't know if my windows are just reflecting the sun burning the grass in that area smh. I feel like germinating some seeds and spreading it in that area. I'm sure that will take about another 2-3 weeks. Got to love it when you care
@touchdown74 Now, if you have tall fescue, wait until September to plant grass seed. But make sure that grass is dead because it could just be dormant, which means it just needs the right temperatures, water, and fertilizer. As far as what's turning it brown, it could be anything. It could be up against a house that radiates heat. There could be some rock in that soil under neath the grass. It could be something there that is holding heat, or it's just getting a lot of direct sun with no water.
@@PoloFieldsLawnService it's actually in the middle of my lawn. No where near brick or concrete. Interesting you said rocks underneath could be causing the heat. Wasn't like that in the past 3 years. I don't have tall fescue. Thanks for replying so quickly.
Hi there. I placed new sod in certain spots in my yard. In one particular area, the sod is turning yellow. I've been watering the grass every day. The weather has been rough this week with daily temperatures in the high 90s. This is when the yellow started. Should I water my grass at night now? Can I save my sod? It's only a month old. 😢
Hello Shelly, First. "Don't water your sod at night," Second, how long are you watering it, and how many times a day? You may be over watering it. The yello color could be from too much water and it not drying out or a fungus. Getting sod around this time of the year isn't the best option because of you fighting heat, but I do understand if you didn't have a choice. Did the person who laid the sod for you give you any instructions, and if so, what were they?
@PoloFieldsLawnService Hi there. Thanks for the reply. I was told to water it once a day for 30 mins. Yesterday I watered it for 2 mins in brown/yellow area (like your video suggested). I took photos. It was doing well but since the heat, it's turning an awful color.
Hello Eli, I only water 2 days a week. Tuesday and Saturday. Shorter days, longer watering times. It takes my sprinkler 1 hr to get 1/2 inch of water on my front lawn. 1 inch of water is a good threshold. If this is too much water and too much on your water bill, any water will help the lawn from going into dormancy
Polo I live in pa. Cool region my lawn is dormant an has or had brown patch now its dormant and have bald spots if my grass is not right I'm not either I just want a nice lawn I was one who tried to water it out of the dormant stage so now its brown has bald spots an a fungus help
Right now, we are going thru a dry spell. If you have an active fungus in your lawn, meaning you see mycelium or lesions on the blades, get you down a fungicide. If you don't see any active fungus, you're probably just noticing damage from a previous fungus. I would put some seed in those bald spots. If the grass is dead in those dormant or damaged spots to the point of no return, just seed them as well. Weasel them in, throw you down some Propiconizole over the entire lawn, water it in, and make sure those seeded spots receive some water.
@@TerranceSTL It flooded here as well in the eastern part of the state. We got another 1 1/2 of rain today. That helps us out TREMENDOUSLY as far as the drought goes

I have pumping water into this fescu bro, and still looking like crap , and now i see orange and yellow leaves ( fungus ) I'm quite sure. do you think it's from over watering? ( I only water in the am )
Question: How long do you water? What is your watering schedule? Do you water daily, every other day, etc? What's the temperature where you live and where are you located?

( los angeles CA ) . i still have some green in it and its not completely dormant ,but its on its second yr and i do not remember it looking like that last yr , just looks off 😞
@peupeuguy310 One thing that you need to do is you need to water it longer. That little water that you're giving it isn't even getting deep into the soil. If you can, change up your watering pattern. I would rather you water your lawn for 30 mins once instead of 10 mins for each day. The type of soil that you have doesn't matter. You just need to water it a little longer. Have you ever applied a fungicide to your lawn? I know some fungicides are restricted in CA, but applying a basic fungicide will be a start.
@@PoloFieldsLawnService i can definitely try and do that, as restrictions arent AS bad as last yr 🫡. It would be ok to make that switch to one time a week , during the summer? Oh and yes , this week i applied the bioadvanced fungus control , ( in a spray.)
If you want to keep your lawn out of dormancy you have to use a wetting agent all golf courses use it. But you have to start putting the wetting agent down no later than May. You can use it now but it's not as quick to come back.
This can work, Rick, but I like to keep things surface level. The average homeowner doesn't know anything about a wetting agent, nor are they gonna spend the money on purchasing a real wetting agent.
Incorrect, wetting agents are used for hydrophobic soils or areas where uniform appearance is crucial, like a golf green. You are wasting time amd money spraying a wetting agent on your entire lawn lol
@@BlakWiseCrackeryou can get them in tablets or liquid and you hook a canister up but it pretty much breaks up the soil to allow better penetration. We used it on the greens in trouble spots. I worked at a links course that had a lot of wind and our irrigation system got plugged with algae. We were half watering using wetting agents to keep them decent. Helluva time
Yes, if it's dead, get that dead grass out of the lawn. If it's dormant, leave it alone. The difference between the 2 is if it's dead, it will be brown from the top to the soil. If it's dormant, it will be brown on the top, but the crown will be green, which means it still has life in it
I need help with lawn, it’s not rain here in 7 weeks now, but I’m also on well so I can water it now just because it would take thousands of gallons of water. Mother Nature just won’t give any relief. I guess nothing I can do cause is apparently half an acre. Out of luck I’m sure.
This is something that you'll have to watch and manage. If your lawn is turning brown from the heat, do what you can when it comes to watering. Find a medium and stick with it. 1 inch if water per week is good for the lawn, but if you can't do 1 inch, do less than that. Of course, when it rains, having a rain gauge to know how much water you receive is crucial because that will let you know how much watering you'll need to aim towards for the week.
Dealing with heat stress now, have you heard of using 2-3 oz of baby shampoo to 1 gal of water per 1,000 sqft this is supposed to break surface tension and allow water to penetrate.
1 oz, water it in for 30 mins afterward. You can do this every 2 weeks, but I would only do it a couple of times for now. It's best to do this in the spring and fall when we are receiving spring and fall rains. This fall, do a couple of applications, and next spring, do a couple of applications. If you have time, get you a real wetting agent and perform these applications. If you're gonna take the golf course approach, use the right solutions. Hope this helps 🙏🏾
@twveach Using a wetting agent can help with localized dry spots. It's normally used on golf courses and sports fields. It also can be used on home lawns. A lot of professional use them on home lawns in the south, like in Texas, where it is really hot most of the year. Now, can you use baby shampoo? Yes. Is this something that most professionals will frown at? Yes. But if a homeowner can't afford the real products and their just trying to get by, can you blame them 🤷🏾♂️
@mrRoverkane Ohhhhh, that's because everyone pulled their sprinklers out as well 😆 Everyone in this cul-de-sac normally watches each other. If one mows, everyone mows. If one waters, everyone water's. They normally follow each other. At least, this is what my customer tells me.

It's been bad this summer with no rain, SMH 😔
But I'll look into it, thanks for the reply! 👍
i had a patch of heat stress in my front yard.. watered for days and nothing worked until i watered it with FOCA laundry detergent ..
@@mathewshoyt1763 Laundry detergent??? That's a new one 😏

I know you stay in Kentucky, and you most likely have tall fescue or KDG grass, but what about the folks that’s a little further south and have Saint Augustine. Do you have any videos or tips for Saint Augustine grass?
I don't have any videos that is strictly catered to St Augustine grass but I'll try my best to help you.

In my area an inch per week cost me just under $400. Just the front lawn . An inch of water is a lot !

Wouldn't adding more water to help with the heat stress just create other issues such as melting out and other lawn diseases?
It will only create issues if your not using a fungicide and if your watering late in the evening or at night. Watering in the mornings and using the proper fungicides at the right time will keep fungus out of your lawn.

How did your watering schedule keep up with this 2024 summer? I believe this 2024 summer was the hottest/longest since I moved to VA, and the watering couldnt keep the grass green.

Hello Shelly,
First. "Don't water your sod at night,"
Second, how long are you watering it, and how many times a day?

Will chlorinated water effect the lawn?
Too much salt
If you want to keep your lawn out of dormancy you have to use a wetting agent all golf courses use it. But you have to start putting the wetting agent down no later than May. You can use it now but it's not as quick to come back.
WTF 😳 are you talking about, What’s a Wetting Agent.” 🤦♂️
This can work, Rick, but I like to keep things surface level. The average homeowner doesn't know anything about a wetting agent, nor are they gonna spend the money on purchasing a real wetting agent.
Incorrect, wetting agents are used for hydrophobic soils or areas where uniform appearance is crucial, like a golf green. You are wasting time amd money spraying a wetting agent on your entire lawn lol
@@patrickklippen3540 Am I spraying a wetting agent all over my lawn, no. But if he wants to, it's his time and choice 🤷🏾♂️
Helluva time
Do I need to rake the dead grass
Yes, if it's dead, get that dead grass out of the lawn. If it's dormant, leave it alone. The difference between the 2 is if it's dead, it will be brown from the top to the soil. If it's dormant, it will be brown on the top, but the crown will be green, which means it still has life in it
I need help with lawn, it’s not rain here in 7 weeks now, but I’m also on well so I can water it now just because it would take thousands of gallons of water. Mother Nature just won’t give any relief. I guess nothing I can do cause is apparently half an acre. Out of luck I’m sure.
If you can't water, just leave it alone. This is the ruff part of the season that Tall Fescue goes through.
I'll keep you posted
👌🏾
In order for my lawn to recover from heat stress and keep it green my water bill would be hundreds of dollars each month.
Don’t be cheap, it’s worth it
@@wayneguy6043 You know it 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Dealing with heat stress now, have you heard of using 2-3 oz of baby shampoo to 1 gal of water per 1,000 sqft this is supposed to break surface tension and allow water to penetrate.
This is literally the person that everyone is going to believe for some silly reason and it’s going to kill everyone’s grass please don’t do this ever
Yes. But if a homeowner can't afford the real products and their just trying to get by, can you blame them 🤷🏾♂️
How do I know if my grass has disease?
You'll see lesions (spots) on the grass blades
