So mine has been nice and green but I have had to water it here and there to keep it from starting to Brown in between the rains. And I also have zoysia grass so it always dies and turns brown and dormant in the fall and winter, so that will be coming soon for me. But it is fun taking care of the lawn I think. Just wanted to let you know I took your steps and this fall, my yard looks at least 75% better than what I came in with. Tenacity is amazing - got rid of my crabgrass and ground ivy, and most of my dandelion. I spot sprayed for weeds August 1 and again August 15 to hit what I missed. I aerated (this was hard on a hilly lawn, but next year I will use a billy goat or outsource this part) September 13, and put down limestone then - I have a lot of moss and pine needles to deal with. I overseeded the next day with Pennington Contractor's Mix. Fertilized a week later. Watered twice a day for about 2 weeks after seeding. Then every 3 days or so for another couple weeks. Was ready to mow by week 3... there was over 6 inches of growth. I basically haven't stopped bagging weekly clippings since... helps me get all the leaves off my heavily wooded lawn. It's not perfect, but my husband is impressed with what I've accomplished in a single season with minimal investment. I wish I could post my before and after pics. Guys, if you live in New England.... Silver Cymbal's tips will help you get your lawn better. These steps worked for me. I am no longer embarrassed of my lawn. Thank you Silver Cymbal!

I only add that "new lawn nutrients" can be added prior to a lawn renovation, while seeding, or after. Try a granular bio char prior to renovation. Bio char can do wonders for a lawn renovation, are relatively cheap and easy to spread.

The first 2 tenacity applications were over the whole yard, last one was spot treatment. I’m currently waiting for my second round of overseeding to grow but i’ve seen a massive improvement. it feels like a miracle! i have gained so much confidence in how to fix and maintain a lawn when I was once was hopeless. i’m confident before the next winter my yard will be one of the best in the neighborhood. thank you so much for the clear and easy to follow instructions!

You want a blend of different grasses. That way if it gets a disease it won't wipe out your entire lawn. Set a timer to water just before sun up. This will cut down on mold and overall disease. If you aerate it's a must to keep the clippings after you mow. This will add nitrogen and provide coverage from the sun and hold enough moisture, not too much for mold, to help with new seed. I worked at a large lawn care company all throughout college. Their methods were backed by years of science. Last tip keep your mower at top height. This will allow the grass to naturally chock out new weeds reducing the need for chemical sprays.

You seem to love your perfect lawns in the US; I 've read that billions of $$$'s are spent on keeping them green and pristeen. Here in the UK there's a growing trend towards sowing meadow mixes to make our gardens into wildlife havens. I see it in my own street. It's been going either way; some people pave over their lawns to park more cars but others have dedicated parts or sometimes all of their lawn to encourage wildflowers. Done well it looks amazing! I use the fiskars staysharp plus reel mower which lifts to 4" and allows me to mow low flowering areas of grass without damaging the flowers. Sitting in my garden it literally dances with life; butterflies, bees, dragonflies and other pollinators. These in turn have brought in more insectivorous birds and even toads and hedgehogs; my former lawn now teems with biodiversity! My cats love exploring and snoozing among the long grasses and flowers too. It used to be just a lifeless monoculture of green before. When I see a pristine lawn now it looks like a desert to me.

Sounds great, but where I live, a wildlife haven means giant cockroaches and snakes! We have much larger lawns here in the US, on average, than you do in the UK. Since I may have a heart attack if I see another snake, I keep my lawn short. I wouldn't mind having flowers that only grow to 3 inches maximum instead of having grass. Which flowers are these?

and everything that can cause a really thin sparse lawn is using a sprinkler system too much too often it depletes the nutrients so a lack of fertilization will also cause a poor looking lawn and once the lawn is established it's best to water heavy one time per week instead of light waterings everyday this will force the roots to go deep and top growth equals root development in about 3 in of root development for seed to make it through the summer so that's why it's best not to seed during the summer. your advice is pinpoint accuracy for success

My husband works 2900 hours a year (6 days a week) and we have Landscapers that come once a week from early April to the second week of November. My husband doesn't have time to do all of this, he tries and we probably have the best lawn on our street but he doesn't have time to mow the lawn every week so he hired a landscaper to do it. They cut our 3/4 acre property in 40 minutes for under $50 a week. The landscapers also do our Spring and Fall cleanups of our leaves and debris that accumulates over the winter. They make their money by working fast and hiring cheap laborers. My husband does the thatching and the seeding and the fertilizing on his one day off. I'll show him your videos and see what happens. He just thatched the front yard lawn yesterday with a new machine Sunsomthing that's an electric thatcher. There was a lot of dead grass under the lawn. He then used our small riding tractor to pick up the dead grass as per your thatching video. Not sure if he's going to do the back yard tomorrow or next Spring.

We have tried four or five different lawn services over the last 14 years and had no success with any of them, and we had core aeration done twice a year for three years and then switched to liquid aeration the last two years. The last lawn service asked us to give them a year to get the lawn in shape and we gave them almost two and we lost another fall of doing your method. Oddly enough, our front lawn is the oldest and it does the best. The challenging part is the largest part and it was all new Bermuda sod about 6 years ago. Our HOA at the time said we had to have the same grass everywhere but our back and side yards have a lot of shade and primarily morning sun on the back. We are now allowed to do different grasses. We are in the Atlanta GA area. We had 42 trees removed from our backyard and there are literally no trees, but a great deal of shade comes from the neighbors trees in the back and parts of the side yards and on the left side of our home, the shade from the height of our home, our neighbors home and a large tree of theirs, seems to keep grass from growing for long. The sod lasted about 4 or 5 years. We have been told that we have bedrock under where the worst part of the lawn is but our HOA would not let us jackhammer the rock because they said it could affect the integrity of neighboring foundations. We aren't really allowed to have rock showing in the front yard, but a lot of our neighbors have it showing so if it is our only option, we may have to do that. On the side yards, can we grow shade grasses or at least try it? We can't afford to sod again and keep re-sodding, so we thought we should overseed with a blend of seed meant for shade like a blend with Kentucky Bluegrass and maybe some Fescue- we have neighbors that have almost total shade and their Fescue is gorgeous but they did sod. Plus we get more sun in the very back, morning sun, except for the areas with shade from neighbor's trees. We read that you shouldn't overseed Bermuda because it is too strong but it is so unhealthy, we are hoping that is not the case. The grass did best with liquid aeration and our sprinklers were installed so close to the surface, that core aeration is dangerous for our sprinklers. So we have a ton of weeds, a ton of brown spots, and quite a lot of bald areas, including one whole side of our yard. I am so overwhelmed. Can't wait until the fall again, must do something now.

Going to use these methods on my suffering grass here in the SW USA. Dried out, dead, and thatched. Lots of work. I’ll be back in a number of months to report progress.

This was all really good advice, except that if you have dead/bare areas then you shouldn't simply aerate before the first major seeding. The reason being that if the soil has been exposed for any length of time then nutrients and minerals are being eroded out and you won't get as good a germination. For the first recovery seeding you should spread about a half inch of top soil around and then seed over that. This is going to ensure better germination. As the lawn gets filled in, then aerating before seeding is a good way to go. Totally agree that fall is the best time to aerate and seed as the weeds have finished their own seeding and germinating, and so rolling the machine over the lawn won't help to spread them as it might in the spring. If it's taking you 1-2 hrs to aerate your lawn though, then you either have a massive property or don't know what you're doing lol! Also, don't water the seeds 3x per day as too much water can lead to fungal infections and mid-day waterings are useless because of evaporation. Deeper waterings between 5-9 am is best with maybe a shorter top-up between 5-9 pm.

ive heard someone say you should rake the area, lay the seed, and THEN lay the soil. The soil being added last will keep the seeds from blowing in the wind or birds from eating it

@@Vinny_donuts if seeds are being watered daily, they won't blow away. I've never seen flocks of birds come and feast on a grass seeding. Being under will retain more moisture, but being on top gives more solar exposure. Personal preference really. Just don't use triple mix soil as it's guaranteed to have weeds due to the cow manure

Yeah finally getting around to fixing my lawn after owning our house for a year. Hard with the Temps up around 100 in Houston, tx.. hopefully around August I'll start this process. Lawn was looking good after I fixed the sprinkler system but man the heat has really burned our grass 🥲
