Hi all lawns can be saved 😊. That's the good news. Sometimes the simple things make such a big difference. Get a weedkiller on and fertilizer and raise your mower height for the rest of summer.. water twice a week deeply mornings.. come autumn the grass should be stronger, weeds gone, and all it may need is a scarify and aerate
It’s not uncommon for new build estates to illegally sell off the top soil, then the homeowners are left with poor quality soil riddled with stones and clay.

Bought a scarifier and aerator, so these will be first steps, but what to do to get rid of damp , so the mud does not return, do i put sand in before seeding ?
Hi John, if it's looking like theres a few obvious bare spots then it would pay to put some seed down and a covering of soil of compost but if it's literally just "thinner" everywhere you can probably just get away without seeding and pop some fertiliser on.. if you do seed I would probably leave the a1 fert for a month, or if any just a very light dose on. Hi.. it all depends what you're starting with.. if you throw seeds onto earth or moss or old grass chances are it wont do very well . So often we dethatch or scarifyto create grooved in the soil..then when you throw seeds they can touch soil and stand a better chance of success..I usually also cover them with a thin layer of compost or topsoil to stop birds and wind moving them around.. finally keep them damp for a few weeks.. aeration helps if it hard and compacted... tilling isnt usually needed
Hey mate, thorough video, enjoyed it a lot. I have a 25 square meter lawn that was in appalling shape when we moved in and I want it looking nice and lush. Could I expect a nice looking lawn by only thatching then seeding it? Are rolling it and adding the compost necessary because I do not have those tools
Hi.. So the more steps done the better the result.. Heavy rain or strong winds can blow or move seeds around.. You will get some germination though... You can shuffle feet over the surface to press them in a bit for a better result an dyou can scatter compost by hand and using a brush to gently work it in
I see a lot of American and Canadian gardeners use sand when leveling, scarifying, seeding etc. What are your thoughts on using sand instead of, or as well as, compost?
Hi you should try to get rid of the weeds first... if it's only weeds may as well use roundup then reseed after 2 to 3 weeks although lots of watering needed this time of year.. maybe better in autumm
Looks great, though a lawn mower seemed a bit of overkill for the size of that yard. Could have probably done the job with a pair of scissors in the same time 😂
Have you considered recycling the grass clippings / chopped up leaves by adding them to the top dressing compost? Seems a shame to remove nutrients and then add others back in. More eco friendly, less waste.
Really enjoy the videos and helpful explanations. Quick question re topdressing after seeding. When you’ve sometimes raked or used a lute on the top dressing how do you avoid not moving the seeds around too much?
Hi just a regular shaded seed. This was from hurrels seeds but you can find shaded anywhere. Compost I generally use a multipurpose compost for most jobs thanks.. as for amount I just eyeball it leaving about 5 to 10mm between most seeds
Nice Job there Shaun, That seeding I did a few weeks back which I said I'd keep you updated on had come through really nicely about an inch high now but just had a massive hailstorm come through with frost predicted for tonight I've everything crossed that it survives, so much for global warming! winter arrives in spring 🙃
I am in the US and I would really like to know how to get rid of the crab grass in our lawn. I actually removed it by hand and then spread grass seed. The grass didn’t grow but the crabgrass came back and is taking over a section of the yard. Last spring I put stuff down before the new sprouts came out and I am at a loss. What do you suggest? 🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@LawnRight hello… thank you for your suggestion I will definitely try it. There is a large area of crabgrass, how long should I wait before putting down new grass seed.
@@evelyngonzalez8028 HI, Id give it a good 2 to 4 weeks really... the spot weed control product is really only for individual weeds though, so it;ll take some time to treat the whole area
New build north facing garden after a year the whole lawn is dead it’s a council home is it down to council to fix as garden is just mud now ? Thank you
@@LawnRight Thank You I will give them a call as garden is on a slight slope & turf they laid last year is all dead & no patches of growth anywhere & because of rain it’s just mud now which runs all down on to patio . I think when I move in if council turf it again I will ask permission to put a retaining wall in to level garden and stop rain & mud to covering the patio I think they must of laid it all on rubble for the whole lawn to be dead I will also ask for a soil test to see why there’s no growth as show home on ends lawn is lush & green
Hi as with any herbicide you are best waiting till it's no longer in the ground residually. here in the Uk this period is typically at least 4 to 6 weeks... BUT if you were doing a "total kill" with Roundup for example you could reduce the time of waiting to 2 to 3 weeks Remember that frog grass typically doesn't really do well if it is in shade AND has a lot of heavy foot traffic (jjust something to bear in mind)

Hi.. So the more steps done the better the result.. Heavy rain or strong winds can blow or move seeds around.. You will get some germination though... You can shuffle feet over the surface to press them in a bit for a better result an dyou can scatter compost by hand and using a brush to gently work it in
@@LawnRight copy that, I’m looking forward to working on this sad lawn
I see a lot of American and Canadian gardeners use sand when leveling, scarifying, seeding etc. What are your thoughts on using sand instead of, or as well as, compost?
I feel it's great on golf courses and near the coast an will have a place in some situations but I usually aim for soil or slightly sandy soil
@@LawnRight Thanks for the reply 👍
Liked and subscribed. My own is full of weeds. Should I just scarify heavily then seed it?
Hi you should try to get rid of the weeds first... if it's only weeds may as well use roundup then reseed after 2 to 3 weeks although lots of watering needed this time of year.. maybe better in autumm
@@LawnRight Amazing. Thanks mate. Ill be following your videos from her eout. Appreciate the advice.
Looks great, though a lawn mower seemed a bit of overkill for the size of that yard. Could have probably done the job with a pair of scissors in the same time 😂
ha ha lol.. maybe! :)
Hello, what about the weeds? will they not come back through the new lawn? thanks.
Hi yes unfortunately they will. At some point once its established I'll put a treatment on
Have you considered recycling the grass clippings / chopped up leaves by adding them to the top dressing compost? Seems a shame to remove nutrients and then add others back in. More eco friendly, less waste.
Great point. Totally agree on that. Maybe mulched clippings would be a little easier as theyll break down quicker , but I do agree with this.
Man that was sweet 👌👌👌👏👏👏
😊👍 thanks!
Really enjoy the videos and helpful explanations. Quick question re topdressing after seeding. When you’ve sometimes raked or used a lute on the top dressing how do you avoid not moving the seeds around too much?
Hi.. if theres still plenty of grass ill use a lute sometimes a rake.. but if it's almost all soil I dont bother. As you say itll just move around
Can you advise what amount of seed you put down per sq meter? What seed and what compost was used ? Thanks
Hi.. yes fingers crossed.. however I'm still pretty optimistic as it's not a deep prolonged frost and warms up pretty quickly.. hopefully..
Solid video!
Thanks!
Hi a pre emergent should help prevent crabgrass, but for removal you'll need something like "Scott's spot weed control for lawns"
@@LawnRight thank you so very much! Wishing you a safe, prosperous and happy new year.
New build north facing garden after a year the whole lawn is dead it’s a council home is it down to council to fix as garden is just mud now ? Thank you
Umm. I'm not sure but wouldnt imagine so.. Sadly.. But I really don't know.. Maybe worth ringing and asking
Thanks for the video! Are there any particular seeds you would use in shade?
Hi I just choose a shady blend from my supplier hurrels seeds but there are plenty out there
Is it safe to use weed killer before putting garden soil and then planting frog grass?
Hi as with any herbicide you are best waiting till it's no longer in the ground residually. here in the Uk this period is typically at least 4 to 6 weeks... BUT if you were doing a "total kill" with Roundup for example you could reduce the time of waiting to 2 to 3 weeks Remember that frog grass typically doesn't really do well if it is in shade AND has a lot of heavy foot traffic (jjust something to bear in mind)
Please could you let me know the name of the (brand of seed) used in this video? Thx
Hi hurrells seeds 😊
Thx ! @@LawnRight
What was the second machine that looked like a lawn mower
Hi.. a scarifier
LawnRight, this wouldn't happen to be the Bridon estate in DN22 would it? Right into the into I was like "I swear I know this place". Having then googled your area covered I'd bet it was...
Hi.. yes we cover that area but this was not even close 😁 more up t'north 😁
Love this video! Where do you get your grass seeds from?
Hi mostly from hurrell seeds 😊😊
