For my lawn this is how I set it up for easy maintenance when moving and starting with sod: season 1: let the lawn grow and cut it at the height you want. Notice where water pools, where it drains, and where doesn’t get enough water. Be mindful of low spots and high spots. Correct these areas this season by moving sprinklers, installing a French drain, and removing all debris that is in the lawn such as rocks or thatch. This is now your foundation. Season 2: let lawn grow at start of season for 2-3 weeks so it is off to a good start. Then proceed to level the lawn with sand or topsoil in areas that were being missed or scalped by the mower last season. Also aeration of the lawn at this stage is also very good. Now you let the lawn grow as a great foundation is set and it’ll grow into an even yard. Season 3 and onward: every start of the season de-thatch, aerate, and little amounts of sand in any low spots that formed. And that’s it, cut at desired height, water based on weekly weather, and remove debris before it piles up or embeds itself into the lawn.

to scalp the lawn or not to scalp the lawn, depends upon how many of laborers are there going to be. the shorter the less labor intensive but not as great of immediate results. i was watching another golf course showing their aeration process for clay is first to use a dense blade scarifirer with a cross cut at 15º parallel, then a mole plow make your dewatering channels about 10-12" down, then follow with a 10-11" deep tine aeration, then use a 5" core plug aerator, then to topdress & backfill the plugs with tumble washed pga 90% sand 10% peat and soil. next fertilizer application should be heavy on the calcium and all of this should be done 2 weeks after the frost is out and temps hit 50ºF then you can get your pre-emergent done most effectively on the next application in early-mid april. or 3 weeks after you do this

Hi Robbie, love your channel. A quick question on compaction please. My fences came down in the January storms and the company I got in to replace them have compacted a lot of the grass, which was to be expected given the nature of work and how wet the grass was. In some places it’s just mud. I’ve hired an aerator for next weekend, but is there anything else I can do to rescue it? Also, I was planning on doing all the other steps in your video, but how soon after aeration can this take place? Thanks.
I renovated last autumn and it worked well. Thanks to your videos! The soil is heavy clay. I have aerated again but wondering if I need to scarify again as there appears to be no thatch layer. As it’s only recently renovated should I just overseed and then overseed with using the roller and a compost seed mix
Topsoil, compost or top dressing after overseeding? I’ve seen different RUclipsrs suggesting different things. Are there advantages or disadvantages of any of these?
Yes there is pros and cons to everything Soil, good for levelling and seeding Compost great for seeding no levelling Sand great for levelling, not much else That's a broad overview, lots of other stuff to consider like the material already in the lawn etc
Spring (After the frosts have passed for your area) Autumn before the frosts Break down into sections, maybe look at doing some areas in the spring and others in the Autumn
Robbie would like to hear your opinion on that Gazon Rooster style product thats all over my instagram. it couldnt be that simple to kill out the moss and it break down???
One question if you are truly talking about beginners, wouldn't learning proper mowing habits, watering, and weeding with maybe a bit on fertilization be the first steps toward getting a thick lawn? An overseeding project can be daunting for a beginner and without knowing proper mowing habits, understanding watering, and managing weeds it might be hard to maintain the early success that can come with an overseeding project. I'd also note for true beginners especially on a lot the size of what you have here, manual aeration with a pitch fork or a manual aerator from amazon is much less daunting and an excellent option.
You should give boston seeds a call, they will be able to advise you, as that's only one factor to consider, things like shade, how often you cut and what height all play just as important a role www.bostonseeds.com
That will depend on where abouts you are and when the frosts stop. Here in Belfast, NI thats very late April or early May This was filmed in May last year
You’re damn near as cold as us in Alberta , third week of May is the usual safe day to plant a garden. There’s still frost down to 3-4 feet in April@@Premier_lawns_official

I have a problem with pigeons keep coming to my garden and searching for food on the lawn. And of course after they had their fill, they 💩 all over the lawn. Any solution I’ll be grateful. And is it safe to add the pigeon poo in my compost bin? 👍Video for beginner.
A lot of people seem to advise applying the pre-seed fertiliser a few days to a week prior to overseeding. Have you had any issues applying it on the same day?
Some things to consider about pre applying the fertiliser before hand... How do you create the seedbed without destroying the fertiliser by applying the fertiliser a couple of weeks beforehand? The grass on the lawn is then growing like mad as it's just been fed, this makes it harder for the new seed to get established Plus your seed has enough nutrients in it to pop out of its corn on its own

We dug a layer of mud and rocks from the lawn. Put down new top soil and pre turf fertiliser and layed new turf. We gave it 3 weeks. Grew nice and green and got quite long. Some reason my mrs went ahead and cut it herself. Looked fine for a day or 2 but then we ended up with alot of brown patchy areas and just grassless mud patches. What should i do to help it recover?
Hi Robbie, love your channel. A quick question on compaction please. My fences came down in the January storms and the company I got in to replace them have compacted a lot of the grass, which was to be expected given the nature of work and how wet the grass was. In some places it’s just mud. I’ve hired an aerator for next weekend, but is there anything else I can do to rescue it? Also, I was planning on doing all the other steps in your video, but how soon after aeration can this take place?
Thanks.
You need to wait until the frost passes for where you live, here in Belfast that's late April early May
I renovated last autumn and it worked well. Thanks to your videos! The soil is heavy clay. I have aerated again but wondering if I need to scarify again as there appears to be no thatch layer. As it’s only recently renovated should I just overseed and then overseed with using the roller and a compost seed mix
At 8:30 is a very thick grad to see. What is it?
I have access to root zone from the local golf club and with heavy clay soil thought it might be a good thing to use would you use it?
Yes that would be great to use. It's hard for the average person to get so your doing well if you can get it
Brilliant
Great video
Thank you 🙏😊
How many m2 per bag of topsoil in the compost spreader? I have about 200m2 to do and don’t want to make multiple trips to the shops!!!
Not sure, you will need a good amount
Done it now, used 16 25l bags so 400l in total
Do you recommend using Scotts grass seed?
I haven't come across that one sorry
Topsoil, compost or top dressing after overseeding? I’ve seen different RUclipsrs suggesting different things. Are there advantages or disadvantages of any of these?
Yes there is pros and cons to everything
Soil, good for levelling and seeding
Compost great for seeding no levelling
Sand great for levelling, not much else
That's a broad overview, lots of other stuff to consider like the material already in the lawn etc
Great video. 2 questions: 1) What time of year? 2) How would I scale this up to a 1000m2 lawn without killing myself?
Spring (After the frosts have passed for your area) Autumn before the frosts
Break down into sections, maybe look at doing some areas in the spring and others in the Autumn
@@Premier_lawns_official thanks!
What if you haven’t got all the gear? I guess do it by hand?
Yes, at best and if you are getting into lawncare a fertiliser spreader is a must, no need to spend big bucks - amzn.to/4c06QPn

Robbie would like to hear your opinion on that Gazon Rooster style product thats all over my instagram. it couldnt be that simple to kill out the moss and it break down???
In certain circumstances it must be effective, however if it was really good I would be out of a job and I'm not...
@@Premier_lawns_official One to test then!!
Any ideas how to rid my lawn of Baby's Tears (Soleirolia)? I've tried Resolve weedkiller a couple of times with no success. Thanks for any advice.
This is so cool
💚😊👍
At what stage is moss killer applied. Is before or after scarification
Which ever works best for you, we do it afterwards but some people do it before.
Thanks Robbie. If I want to overseed is it best to apply iron before scarification
Ive put lawn sand down to kill moss. How long should i wait until overseeding?
I'm not sure
@@Premier_lawns_official lol. Ok cheers. Could you hazard a guess
Thanks for the feedback, with lawncare there is a lot to learn and it can't all be covered in the one video
Your behavior right now is absolutely atrocious
should i aerate in autumn or spring or both?
Yes, or just whenever you can 💪👌👍
Hi, did you lightly water the lawn before you levelled it?
Nope, I ha have never done that
I have a high amount of clay in my soil too what type of grass do you recommend?
You should give boston seeds a call, they will be able to advise you, as that's only one factor to consider, things like shade, how often you cut and what height all play just as important a role www.bostonseeds.com
Do you recommend the milwaukee mower?
Yes it's a great job. Very powerful and light
When would you suggest starting the process? Late March early April?
That will depend on where abouts you are and when the frosts stop. Here in Belfast, NI thats very late April or early May
This was filmed in May last year
You’re damn near as cold as us in Alberta , third week of May is the usual safe day to plant a garden. There’s still frost down to 3-4 feet in April@@Premier_lawns_official
@@willkeith4944 love Alberta, it's been a while since I have been there.
I’m betting Belfast is lovely , grandmas from there, maybe one day ,God willing , I can see it , and you can put me to work mowing some Emerald green grass @@Premier_lawns_official
I’m based in Norfolk, so I’ll pencil in around April time weather dependant
🥵 better to hire someone!!
That's the spirit, if a job is worth doing it's worth paying someone to do it right for you
When you put soil and seed in the roller together, do you get good results doing it that way ?
The grass on the lawn is then growing like mad as it's just been fed, this makes it harder for the new seed to get established
Plus your seed has enough nutrients in it to pop out of its corn on its own
You didn’t kill the moss with Iron before scarification?
There was iron with the seaweed 👍
Did you spray before you started filming?
for a verry shady corner, what seed would you use
If there isnt enough light, grass won't grow.
hi there i live in London and the soil is clay right now the whether has been very rainy and i think my lawn is water logged when the whether heats up how do i start to reinvite it
Can’t you just spread the compost with the leveler? Is the roller really necessary. Why no sand for the leveling part?
Yes you can do that also. And not use a roller.
Of course , everyone with a small backyard has all the tools and equipment you suggested
Is it realistic to cover a 600m2 overseeded lawn in compost? How long would this take and how much compost would I need?
You can definitely do it, not sure on how many bags. Might be worth hiring a powered top dresser for it
What kind/brand of Scarifying machine is that? I'm interested in finding a machine like that.
It's an Eliet 501 scarifier
Do you not fleece the lawn afterwards?
You can if you want, it speeds it up but after a few weeks it doesn't make any difference
@@Premier_lawns_official thanks 👍
This video is for beginners??????
Yep, explaining the basics
Are you brain dead
And everybody has this Machines and so on?😂
If you have a woman, she's lucky. So caring and gentle. A man from Galway xxx lol
where is the aerator from the start of the video?
It's called a pluggr
nevermind.
HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST FOR YOU TO DO IT
1 million dollars 💵🤑
@@Premier_lawns_official you dont cut many gardens in county antrim then
