A lot of people mistake the bubble-wrap for protective packaging. You are supposed to use it to communicate with your new ants using Morse Code, which was invented by ants. Samuel Morse stole the idea from them. Usually you will be provided with a large enough sheet of bubble-wrap for a short greeting and to provide the map coordinates for the location where you want the colony to establish itself. If you just randomly pop the bubble-wrap your may confuse the ants or anger them. Congratulations on your hipster ant colony where deconstructed versions of popular ant dishes are served on sheets of rock.
As a child, I got an Uncle Milton’s ant farm for Christmas one year… never ordered ants, just caught a few from the yard and put them in…didn’t realize that doomed them til they died. Your video, was entertaining and informative…your ant home, amazing. It makes me want to try again here 45 years later 😎
“The most important part of any keeping is… ants.” Wow. Riveting information, I would never have guessed. I’m so glad you’re the expert! Love the tiny shovel. It’s a special guest!
Things to know when starting off as a beginner ant keeper. 1. First things you MUST do when getting ants is know what type of species they are. Many ants have a variety of likings so this is super important. 2. Ants do not like bright lights that is why people put red-things around there enclosures. The reason why they all make it red is because ants cannot see red light so it makes the place dark for them. 3. All ants are female except for certain male ants that only appear during nuptial flights (a time of the year when ants fly out to mate with other ants to start colony’s). 4. Ant keeping requires patience. Some ants take a long time to lay eggs and for the eggs to hatch while other Ants do this rather quickly. 5. Always give your ants an appropriate amount of food, if they are a small colony then don’t give them too much or too little, and if they are a big colony then you should not be giving them a small meal and instead give them lots of food. If you have any questions I will try my best to answer anything!
Oh I forgot to mention that ants highly dislike loud noises and vibrations so try your best to put their setup in the quietest place in your house! And also that some ants do not have cocoons and instead have pupae which looks like a very white worker ant. If your ants do not have cocoons it is not a bad thing and it is completely normal!
Be carefull with the plug at 3:02 - if it gets too cold/warm they can just fall off. I had to vacuum a few hundreds of my Messor one time because of that.
1:45 "But surprisingly, these actually smell... disgusting." LMAO That was perfect. From the dry delivery to the subversion of expectations, that was just perfect.

I used to be anxious about insect keeping, too. So I put a praying mantis in a terrarium next to my bed. She is the first thing I see every morning, and to her, I am a necessary evil. If you can get past that nightmare, the rest is no problem. 😉
11:54 That's pupal transport. To waste less energy, a worker gets into pupal (last stage of brood) position, and another one grabs her and carries her. Another note. Isn't that nest way too big for that colony? That nest is made for colonies with thousand of workers. (not the sand one, the one with the premade tunnels). The nest being so big can stress them and they will also probably deposit trash in the nest, causing potentially fatal mold outbreaks. Edit: I just watched the end of the video, my bad
The worker in 12:17 is indeed a worker that recently eclosed(the stage where an pupa turns into an adult in complete metamorphosis). Her exoskeleton is lighter coloured as her exoskeleton needs time to harden and darken.
