My grass usually looks nice. It was True Green & I was not happy. Scotts was the best I miss there fertilizing service.
Good morning Alan. Love to watch your videos and have learned a lot from them. Customer has new St. Augustine sod down for 3 months now. Seems like it doesn’t want to grow like most of our yards. Irrigation is spot on. What would you recommend to help this? No bad spots just not much growth. We are in central Florida just so you know.
Allyn, want to thank you for your videos. Here's a quick lawn success story from northern Louisiana. Past videos of yours explained how to feed/maintain a lawn for beginners like me using off the shelf brands. My neighbor for 4 years never applied anything, and cut his grass way too low in order to hide the weeds. Then our new HOA kicked in and his weedy bermuda lawn suddenly didn't comply. I started turning it around within a few months with the heaviest recommended dosages of two separate applications of Scott's Triple Action granular, and one heaviest recommended app of Anderson's post-emergent granular with nitrogen, all three were 5-6 weeks apart. Then I hit it with Image weed killer spot spraying to treat the worst spurge and creeping charlie imaginable. While the lawn is about 75% fixed and a ways to go, the improvement is amazing. Yesterday two guys stopped by to ask me what I did. This fall I'm thinking of adding Flagship, a pre-emergent, and an insect control granular. Thank you again for the knowledge you imparted, I would have never had the confidence to thrower down this aggressively, and it has worked.
All of a sudden its hot and dry here, some of my front yard is stressing out. Looking for my next fertilizer application, delaying until we get rain. Maybe some 7-0-20 Stress Blend. Normally i would just use the Scotts Summer with bug control. Too much nitrogen, i need my lawn to slow down. I need to start mowing my lawn in reverse, wheel tracks have smothered the grass near fence lines.
One thing I am not sure about when a label says 'Don't apply when the temperature is above 85' . Is that ok to apply in the morning when it's cooler but during the day it's going to be 90+?
yes exactly, you would just apply during a cooler part of the day. In these cases, I prefer evening because the temps will stay down for a good 8-10 hours after the app too.
I live in Fresno ca we have days that 113 degrees in July my grass was green but not a dark green more like a lime green I put some Scott’s fertilizer I say like 2 or 3 days later it looks dead now yellow I just seen a you tube guy saying he used that bag
I purchased flagship for the first time this season, I read the instruction, I believe I can only apply it in the spring and fall, I did not use a weed killer, my lawn look awful, I applied first application in April and afterwards lawn looked amazing, I have cool season lawn
I live in East Central Florida and I started this season with a very marginal lawn. Neighbors were using lawn care companies and their lawns looked great. I decided I was going to be consistent in following Allyn’s recommendations through his Yard Mastery App utilizing Liquid fertilization and Flagship granular. I’ve now caught up to the professionals and starting to dominate my neighbors. I just follow the yard mastery app and it tells me what product to throw down. I read the directions on the label of the product and when completed entered into the App and it tells me what product to throw down next and a target date to do so. If I can do it you all can too. I’m spending a whole heck of a lot less money than my neighbors with their professional lawn services. Thank you Allyn.
I did the same down here in WPB. I switched to liquid weed killer and it was a game changer. Allyn has helped me pass my neighbors lawns. Just throwin it down and it shows.
Nice job. A knowledgeable and caring homeowner beats a paid service any day. You know your lawn better than a guy who visits 50 yards a week, and you gotta live with the results.
I’m in Mississippi and just purchased a home. The yard sucks and I want it green! How do I even know where to start. Is it too late in the year to start trying for a green yard that’s free of weeds?
I am so glad I found your channel when I decided to jump into doing my own lawn care. I’m constantly learning from your channel. Thank you. Hopefully one day I’ll have the honor to meet you in person.

I burned my lawn with Scott's. I'm still learning all of this . What is the rule as you mentioned if your grass is already OK at 90 degrees then the fertilizer won't burn it. what if the lawn is not super bright or maybe a little yellow? Do you still want to fertilize it ? An the amount is a variable too right? How do I know if I have a cool season lawn ? Also please recommend a mild fertilizer maybe slow release?
Fertilized my Bermuda grass that had iron. Burned and killed the lawn which had been over seeded with rye grass. Will laying sod on top work as there’s no grass anymore
Great explanation and knowledge gain. I am a new home owner and added new sod and this video explained everything I needed to know to get started. Thank you very much!
I HAVE burned my lawn, and it happened exactly as Mr. Hane said. The first time my tow behind spreader didn’t turn off and dumped a pile in one spot. And yesterday my push spreader got caught on a broken limb I didn’t see and I dumped a bit. I am sure it will burn there too. If you FOLLOW exactly as this channel explains you will NOT burn your lawn. When in doubt take the lawn care boot camp offered.
If you accidentally spill fertilizer in one spot..it will burn regardless. It's concentrate urea..so the spot is dead. Best thing to do is water that area down to break it down... I'd recommend replacing area when it's cooler later on or when we get into the rainy season.
EXCELLENT video, Allyn! Some people "soak" their granules in water and apply them in liquid form. Is that good? The instructions on the packet did not suggest that.
That grass is absolutely THICC!!! I'm in the Houston area and have been reworking the soil for 2 years to get better roots but I have another year or two to anywhere close to that dense of grass!!!
you can fertilize in the summer, provided you water it. The lawn care companies in my area will only drop summer fertilizer if they can see you have been watering. Otherwise yards gets damaged and customer calls up complaining their yard is burned.
We moved from Southwestern Ohio to Western Ky in 2010. I'm not sure what it is, I've noticed that weeds are bad in yards around here, Owensboro to be more specific, and I've also noticed that I hardly ever see anyone watering their lawns here. Maybe more and more people are getting automatic sprinkler systems but I don't really think that's what it is. I remember a lot more yards with sprinklers going to town in Ohio than I notice here and not sure why.
I'm a landscaper, it got up 98 today and I fertilized a customers lawn. Why? Because the soil was wet enough, I was able to set time to water it in immediately and I was able to set multiple programs so that the grass gets watered multiple times a day for a week. Just add water. And if the fertilizer doesn't take, buy some granular lime and spread it where you fertilize. Adjusts the ph of your soil.
No rain up in here in Pinellas county. Lawns are still green. Judicious watering and your fert/nutrient advice are getting us through the worst of it. Send some of that Hillsborough county rain our way!!! Thanks for the vids Al.
Been using the LCN system (bios & Flagship) for about 2 months now, can honestly say my Tif419 has never looked better in the 15 years since I put it down as sod. Still using a lawn care service but “throwin’ it down” between the “paid” visits. Thanks Allyn! 👍
Allen thanks for the video. Question I'm in the Midwest and when the grass starts to go dorment because of the 99 degree temps it seems silly to fertilize don't you agree as well as water ❓
Just order my first bag of FlagShip can’t wait to get your product I live in New Jersey you have so many good reviews And your videos are awesome my friend so excited to throw down on my lawn hopefully I get good results and you have a customer for life
Thank you! You answered my lawn concerns for summer. Did you do a video about pet urine? Could you please repost? People keep letting their pets urinate on the edge of my lawn! Despite the fact that I have a “Keep off of lawn” at that location! 💕
Threw down some Stress Blend yesterday. Only thing I wish was changed is make all the prill sizes the same for easier more even spreader feeding. Used my Brinly which is similar to an earth way on #15/16 and had to open and shut multiple times through passes to get to feed evenly and not plug.
I haven’t been able to turn my lawn this green all year. It’s growing like crazy and the blades are thick. But it’s light green and yellow. I have to wait for it to grow to see the dark green. I’d do anything to have it this green
I think when people talk about burning the grass with fertilizer, they mean will it kill the grass when a concentrated amount (a bunch of prills) of fert hits a spot in the lawn. That answer is usually yes, right? For example, if not closing the spreader and turning on the ends or accidentally dumping some out.
yes exactly, if you spill some - that spot will burn no matter if it's 70 degrees or 100 degrees outside. It's the over-abundance of nutrients that "burns" or kills, not the temperature.
I’m trying to turn my yard around. If I fertilize will weeds benefit? Should I kill weeds first or promote grass growth. I’ve always heard tall grass will choke weeds out. I like in the Bluegrass states.
I get that but because I couldn’t find any info on the bag I called the company. I’ve always read that you shouldn’t use weed and feed when it’s above 85 degrees. They told me not to apply if it’s 85 or more. I live in Texas so we are already in the high 90’s and it’s not even summer. So do I still apply it or not? Maybe just use Milorganite instead? By the way it’s Sta Green southern weed and feed.
I would like to see feedback on stimulating growth during the heat can be negative for cool season grasses I have heard this from several turf specialists but would like to know more Detail.
What if you haven't gotten much rain and can't water the lawn. Will fertilizer burn the lawn in that case? Our lawn is already starting to look a little burnt from the sun.
the fert won't burn it, it just goes to waste. The lawn will turn brown naturally when it doesn't get water - that is normal summer dormancy, not burn.
The only problem I ever have with granular is getting it through the turf. Even mini prill gets caught on top but that's because it's couch at 6mm. Takes a couple of good waterings.
When I worked for TruGreen the liquid Fert would get too hot in the truck and become ammonia and burn your nose. If you spray that, it will tip burn the grass. Nasty stuff.
The Polymer is a plastic like semi-permeable membrane. Water will diffuse into the prill and the amonnia or other nitrogen source will slowly diffuse out. Heat doesn’t matter, but if there are a high percentage of the prills cracked, the nitrogen will be released immediately.
Hey I applied flagship 4 weeks ago and I’m in process of trying to bring my lawn back and make the st Augustine spread because weeds have taken over my lawn i just did a application of milorganite on Friday and noticed a lot of weeds growing would you recommend I go back to flagship in 4-5 weeks for my next application I do have irrigation I water my lawn and I’m trying to bring it back and make the st Augustine spread to the bare areas I’m in Fort Lauderdale where temps are 95+
yes you should apply fertilizer every 30-45 days to keep it spreading if you are not in a county with summer blackouts. Here is a little more info on that ruclips.net/video/erRxlVlitSk/видео.htmlsi=40z0hjzmoubhufbn
I live in central Florida just outside Orlando. My yard has turned to sand and dead grass. HOA is on my behind but I don’t have the cash to resod. Where should I start?
@@petermontgomery7323, I would till the yard/turn over the soil and plant rye seeds. It's tricky depending on the season and birds eating seeds, you would have to have the right conditions and watering so seeds can germinate. In Southwest Florida I normally seed in late winter. A lot of work, but definitely cheaper than sodding.
Can I add fertilizer in 112 degree weather in Fresno CA area?? If yes, is 20+ nitrogen too much? How much nitrogen should I be adding during this type of heat?
that varies by the makeup of the fert. Urea nitrogen, for example, gets into the soil with minimal water and can be plant available very soon after. Sulfur coated urea on the other hand, is timed to release much slower. This way you get some nitrogen up front and some on the back.
@@TheLawnCareNut Thanks, got a question for you. Just ordered spoon juice. is this enough to replace RGS, Humic 12, MicroGreene. and just keep AIR-8 and Spoon Juice plan?

When you "burn" a lawn it is referring to a chemical burn not a temperature burn. When you "burn" a lawn it is because you applied certain liquid pesticides or herbicides at too high of a rate, usually when it is above 85 - 90 degrees.
I’ve just started a renovation on the lawn, there was too many different grass types, just looked bad and was not consistent in colour even when fertilised so I’m digging it over, levelling it and some decent grass seed and with a bit of luck, I will have a lawn to be proud of. BTW your videos are the best way to end the week.
Am I still able to throw down granular fert after 06/01? I just aerated, overseeded and spread Scott’s starter lawn then Milorganite on 05/13. Lawn is looking great and I want to continue to treat through the summer.

Will laying sod on top work as there’s no grass anymore
Allyn any recommendations for Wild strawberry???? Aside from pulling it up by the root????
Green shocker and lean & green from andersons are game changing
“ a scared “ ?
lol 🤣👍🏻
Won't burn my lawn. Its so lush and green. Just put down yard mastery stress blend. So many mushrooms in lawn now lol. But green which is good.
That grass is absolutely THICC!!! I'm in the Houston area and have been reworking the soil for 2 years to get better roots but I have another year or two to anywhere close to that dense of grass!!!
doesnt manatee county have a 2 phosphorus limit this time of the year
you can fertilize in the summer, provided you water it.
It's a low-key market for sure
My concern here in Central Texas with fertilizing in July and August is the fungus caused by the nitrogen ?
Reading this now in Pinellas. I just got my first rain of the year on Wednesday. Hot, dry year so far
@@allbayfishing9456 For sure... water restrictions on reclaimed water and fert bans are working against us too!
Wanted to ask a question: I live in Orlando it’s raining season is it still a good time to fertilize? Would the rain wash it away
Been using the LCN system (bios & Flagship) for about 2 months now, can honestly say my Tif419 has never looked better in the 15 years since I put it down as sod. Still using a lawn care service but “throwin’ it down” between the “paid” visits. Thanks Allyn! 👍
We have not had rain for several weeks here in central Maine. No fert until we do.
I'm hearing alot of reports like this right now as far west as Montana.
Why not? No irrigation?
@@SLCTerp none.
@@TheLawnCareNut got about 2/10ths of an inch last night. Made a difference but we need more .
Allen thanks for the video. Question I'm in the Midwest and when the grass starts to go dorment because of the 99 degree temps it seems silly to fertilize don't you agree as well as water ❓
So can I apply in the afternoon, and then water in the following morning?
Trying to stick to my water day for water restriction purposes...
I live in Texas 8b. What seed would you recommend for st Augustine. Mine is dying and I need a good replacement.
I bought a bag of Freedom. I'll do a light application this weekend....
I applied some stress blend this evening. I think have my bermuda so thick that I had to go back and get those prills off the blades lol.
Can I apply a fungicide then spray a herbicide and if now how long should I wait to apply the herbicide?
Also mowing high during extreme heat relieved the stress on the grass .
How do you remove st. aug from your zoysia?
I haven’t been able to turn my lawn this green all year. It’s growing like crazy and the blades are thick. But it’s light green and yellow. I have to wait for it to grow to see the dark green. I’d do anything to have it this green
Wish you talked more about watering and how it impacts fertilizing. Great video as always though.
Is it best to cut the lawn first before applying fertilizer? Wet first before applying?
Have you put out a video on how to repair burnt grass?
I think when people talk about burning the grass with fertilizer, they mean will it kill the grass when a concentrated amount (a bunch of prills) of fert hits a spot in the lawn. That answer is usually yes, right? For example, if not closing the spreader and turning on the ends or accidentally dumping some out.
yes exactly, if you spill some - that spot will burn no matter if it's 70 degrees or 100 degrees outside. It's the over-abundance of nutrients that "burns" or kills, not the temperature.
Did he ever do the liquid video?
How many days/weeks between fert application and weed killer application? Thanks!
Some fertilizers can be used between 70-90 degrees.
I would like to see feedback on stimulating growth during the heat can be negative for cool season grasses I have heard this from several turf specialists but would like to know more Detail.
Love the simple way you break things down Allen. Good stuff 👍👍
thank you!
@@TheLawnCareNut Thanks. I see the difference now.
Do you need to water it after applying fertilizer?
Yes
Yes
Good points. I’m irrigated and getting the summer stress blend down this weekend. Loved results last season.
The only problem I ever have with granular is getting it through the turf. Even mini prill gets caught on top but that's because it's couch at 6mm. Takes a couple of good waterings.
I have that problem as well. I just take my blower and go around the yard to open the grass up and let the prills fall through.
I have some grey leaf spot in my St Augustine. Was planning on azoxystrobin fungicide this week, then 1/2 N next week. What do y’all think?
Can I apply summer fertilizer when California temps are over 100 degrees ?
What causes St. Augustine to yellow?
Which summer (105+ degrees) fertilizer is pet safe in Vegas
When I worked for TruGreen the liquid Fert would get too hot in the truck and become ammonia and burn your nose. If you spray that, it will tip burn the grass. Nasty stuff.
yes I had that happen in the summers in Chicago too - we would pH test the mixes every morning to make sure they hadn't turned on us
What kind of turf is that? Looks amazing.
The Polymer is a plastic like semi-permeable membrane. Water will diffuse into the prill and the amonnia or other nitrogen source will slowly diffuse out. Heat doesn’t matter, but if there are a high percentage of the prills cracked, the nitrogen will be released immediately.
Thanks for the tips!
@@TheLawnCareNutwould you recommend I use milorganite or the flagship with the temps I have

I live in central Florida just outside Orlando. My yard has turned to sand and dead grass. HOA is on my behind but I don’t have the cash to resod. Where should I start?
Sell the house lol
Try seeding your yard, it's more work but much cheaper than sodding.
I have a base of st Augustine. That doesn’t have seed does it?
@@petermontgomery7323, I would till the yard/turn over the soil and plant rye seeds. It's tricky depending on the season and birds eating seeds, you would have to have the right conditions and watering so seeds can germinate. In Southwest Florida I normally seed in late winter. A lot of work, but definitely cheaper than sodding.
@@petermontgomery7323 The St. Augustine will also grow back if you till the soil. The rye will just blend in and make it thicker.
Can I add fertilizer in 112 degree weather in Fresno CA area?? If yes, is 20+ nitrogen too much? How much nitrogen should I be adding during this type of heat?
I could see the red, white, and blue in the fert spread slo mo.
Can you use miracle grow plant food
and spray it on your grass? Just
curious
So how long after fertilizing the lawn and watering do the perils take to breakdown and get in the soil and plant?
that varies by the makeup of the fert.
@@danielvaliente3956 yes that is the idea - it replaces RGS and Humic12 completely. It does not give you all of the micros that are in MicroGreene but if does give you some of them. For sure keep the Air8 in your plan
Excellent info :) we're super restricted here with irrigation, only get to water our lawns once a week up here in Ontario and within specified times during that day. However I'm back to fertilizing and doing what I can to keep it nice for my boys, Keep up the great content.
yes it will cook it ! If you put it on in June, better water the hell out of it
How do I know my lawn is Cool Season? I live in Pleasanton California.
I’d love some extra content for us non-irrigated lawns. 🤙 love the channel
+1
We have to drag sprinklers around the yard
Yea I agree I have a lot of clients ask for fert but I advice them not to if they don’t have irrigation or wanna be dragging a hose around some advice would be great to make those extra dollars slinging fert!!
My neighbors think I'm crazy while I wait 10 min to keep moving the sprinkler around my yard😂. So yes I'm in for the non irrigation people. I am the irrigator in my Arnold Schwarzenegger Terminator voice 🤣😂😎
How often in summer (Texas) should I apply fertilizer? I generally use liquid.
Thanks for flying the Red, White and Blue :-)
Am I still able to throw down granular fert after 06/01? I just aerated, overseeded and spread Scott’s starter lawn then Milorganite on 05/13. Lawn is looking great and I want to continue to treat through the summer.
