What are your thoughts on removing the old lawn? Rather than core aeration, I think I have to rototill because I have widespread shrub and tree roots invading my turf area.
leftheaded wow I have the same I have a horrible tree that grows roots and forms more tress. I have ripped a lot up but Ima just jay down more dirt and hope for the best when I start the Reno. I'm facing like 20 basketball size holes in my yard now, I'm wondering if i should fill it with rocks first. Dirt just makes a big wet sludge aft rain. Things I'd do for level lawns lol. Mine is on a angle 😫
I nuked my old lawn that was mostly weeds. I just used a power raked everything out of it so it's only dirt. my question is.. is there something I can add to soil when I level it to improve it? any help would be appreciated. I live in North Idaho if that makes a difference.
@@leftheaded ideally, you'd kill the existing grass and then rototill to ensure that nothing comes back through. If you're okay with the grass you had growing, then killing off might not be necessary. Your renovation will just be a mix of your new seed and potentially old grass

So Ryan this week I saw someone using your DIY sprinkler system in my neighborhood. Then I saw some pink flamingos, then I noticed the lawn was cut every other day. I knew what this could only mean. super cool to meet another Lawn Care Enthusiast in my neighborhood.
I've been following your channel since November 2019 when we bought our house in Central Illinois and I gotta say, you have really opened my eyes to lawn care. I check out RUclips tutorials like anyone else and I always seem to revert back to your videos. Very thorough, informative and you don't ram sponsored products down my throat when I'm just trying to learn from someone else's mistakes. I recently pulled the trigger on a DIY in ground sprinkler system to help with watering for my fall tall fescue overseed (so my wife doesn't have to water while I'm at work) and based most of it off of advice and insight I've gathered from your tutorials and videos. I never imagined I would be so into lawn care, let alone taking on such a huge project by myself but it really came together. I appreciate all of the information and insight and always look forward to learning from your renovations. Thanks for taking the time to make all of these videos and no matter what the wife says, its worth it!
Coulda rented a sod cutter and saved the chemical application, waiting, mowing, de-thatching, and several man hours but- more power to ya if you think more work and time is less work and faster
Great video man! I just completed renovation myself this weekend. I followed the exact same steps, except that I didn't kill any of the existing grass. I used 50/50 mix topsoil and compost for leveling. Used combination of blankets and peat moss for seed coverage. Made a make shift sprinkler system (similar to yours) that cover every sq inch of my lawn. Now I am just watering three times a day and waiting to put down some more tenacity if I see any weeds pop up. You are an inspiration, keep up the great work!
I just finished doing this job today and all I have to say is; if someone invents a way to cut this job in half without sacrificing results, they'd be billionaires. Took me 7 hours by myself and my body is begging for mercy. OUCH OUCH! Great video btw, Ryan
I've watched a lot of 5hese videos and this was the best one I've seen. Step by step, leaves nothing out and answers questions which may come up. Perfect for someone like me who has no idea what to do
Just started my research on grass renovation and found this gem of a video. Super excited to get my project started. This step-by-step tutorial was by far the best video I've come across. I have about an acre to do so I have my work cut out for me. Thanks again for all of the knowledge.
Ryan, we just got our concrete pool filled in and I'm taking these steps to bring in all grass. Just completed the front yard reconstruction and on to the watering stage of that section. Shout out from Southern Twin Cities area. Thank you for these guides!
Ryan, I am SO TEMPTED to do this to our lawn, especially the front lawn (approximately 100 ft x 100 ft) as it could be a showstopper of a lawn! It is hilled where our house sits atop and has a nice wooded backdrop with smaller side and back lawns somewhat hidden from a passerby's view. We live in a nice neighborhood in the lakes region of New Hampshire and this lawn was hammered and then neglected by the previous family who owned it prior to our purchase in 2018. My retired neighbor seems to have taken some of your advice about lawns - his is a wicked pissa'h of a lawn! If I go this route, I would definitely think about putting in an in-ground watering system! Thank you so much for the hard work you put into your research and with these videos, podcasts, etc.. it's nice to know someone out there is just as crazy as I am about beautiful lawns!
I started mine the 5th of July on 3 properties. I scalped it first then sprayed KillZall (double recipe and some Dawn), to wipe out really thick areas of Creeping Charlie. 85-90% of the grass and CC died within 7 days, but after a couple rains CC was still popping up and you could almost tell which underground veins didn't want to cooperate. I doubled the dosage and hit them again about 2 weeks later I still had a bit of it so one more time. Man that stuff is tuff. I did one yard this past Wednesday and another one today after the rain last night which really helped out as I am running a roto tiller. Hopefully the mistake it seems like I may have done is kicking any dead grass seed down in the lawn but I didn't noticed this grass being 'in seed'. It's Charlie that I am worried about. After working these small lots for most of the afternoon, I planted a 4 mix of KY Bluegrass, with "sissy" rye to give some eye candy to those (fiance) who keep asking "are we there yet" as to when the grass will come up. I too used the big box top soil to level ($1.67 at HD currently) and some all black potting mix near the drive/sidewalk to the house to make it pop (yes I have OCD).
Always enjoy Ryan's videos. The effort he puts into these vids really provides a good information base about lawn and lawn care. Thank you Ryan. Mark C Edmonton, Canada
Your my hero Ryan just completed my first renovation (over seeding) 2 weeks ago and everything is going fine thanks to you, had a rough summer with the heat and weeds, this was newly hydraulic seeded lawn in June. Bought your T-Shirt and your book to encourage you. Here in Quebec CA we can not buy very much more since there issues with the shipping. I see some people gave this video a thumbs down shame on them. Your work is in my opinion the best out there considering everything like information, links, editing, etc. Almost caught up with the last 2 years of videos and getting ready to look at them again :) . Thank You Ryan you help me a lot i have already the best looking grass on my street and my neighbors are coming to me for advise now, of course for now i can only transmit what i have learned from you!
I'm doing a renovation right now to a 1000sqft highly neglected area; I ended up tilling my lawn mixing in compost and peet to really aerate it and bring it back to life. Your videos have been incredibly helpful and inspirational for me to get this done, so thank you and keep at it!
Thanks for the video on the DIY sprinkler system. I actually used that to install a complete irrigation around my very weirdly shaped lawn back in the spring. I added some connected timers that do weather adjusting. It took a couple months of measuring with catch cups and adjusting the configuration, but I got it dialed in, and now I have a "set and forget" irrigation system that uses less water to do a better job. Next year, I'm probably going to do the work to take it in-ground and install a valve box and single unit connected controller.
Thanks for this. We moved to Omaha 3 years ago and have owned this house one month. We have so much to learn but have been battling the back yard for the 3 years we were renting. Poison hemlock, dandelions and now moles. We have multiple types of grass and weed so this guide with everything in one place is helpful!
I like watching your videos, not only for the blue collar information, but the fact that you don't hide the essentials. You show the labor, you're honest about the variables. And you have the best lawn hands down. After glyphosate, a torch would've saved you a lot of labor from dethatch. Plus you'll get a free dose of carbon!. I'm a beginner but I couldn't hold back from torching
This is a really good video! Tough to get some of these tools for someone with a smaller yard. I am in zone 5 (Chicago). Will be going with Dethatch > Aeration > Seed (80% Tall Fescue/20% Midnight KBG) > Scotts Fertilizer with Weed Preventer> Peat Moss Cover > Lots of watering. Fingers crossed! This will be my first attempt at lawn renovation.
Wow! Well done. Just the facts, none of the extraneous. Great economy of words. Very efficient video, I don’t even need to speed it up. I like the cadence. Have watched several videos. I subscribed.
Well put together video, Ryan. I just started a mini-reno/overseed project this past Friday, and the only extra step I would add (though it may not be a problem for everyone) is: Bird protection! Despite trying several kinds of seed coverings, I still seem to get flocks of birds pecking at my precious seed. I have found that the random movement of foil-style party balloons (from the dollar store) staked around the yard work well, though the store attendant will look at you funny when you tell them what they're for - not to mention your neighbors will think you're throwing a week long birthday party.
Completely agree with the issue with the birds. Where I live, there are tons of them, they are big and can easily eat a few pounds. Without the top dressing soil, I would have little chance of any success.
I bought a house this past December and filled 45 bags of leaves, pulled a ton of weeds and mowed regularly. However, this summer got so hot and working 6 days a week just left me too tired to take care of it like I initially did. I knew I had to take care of the leaves because in some areas it was a foot deep. No one had actually lived at the house for over 3 years. Cut to today and I had looked up this crazy weed that is growing all over the perimeter, pokeweed. I borrowed my boyfriend's hedge trimmer and took down the ones closest to the house and by my garage. I know I have to dig out the root and I bought concentrated weed killer but I stopped because was too tired AND the amount of vines and pokeweed in the 3 piles I raked is crazy! I also have creeping Charlie everywhere in my back yard. I just invested in leaf filter gutter guards so I dont want to spend all my money on a yard reno but I'm feel a little defeated. Watching your videos today had made me feel better. They are relaxing to watch so thank you for sharing. Im going to continue to battle on but eventually I'm probably going to have to hire someone to help. My front yard has some sort of bluegrass and looks way better than my giant back yard. It could be so beautiful and its only my first year so I'm trying not to feel too defeated and be kind to myself. Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted talk! 🤣
I've had good results mixing compost and peat moss 50/50 in a barrel spreader (I use the same one shown in the video here). I turn it together in a wheelbarrow (no need to over stir it, the barrel roller will take care of it - just get it integrated), then dump it in the barrel and start laying it down. The spreader leaves just the right amount. Seems to be a good mix for providing plenty of organic nutrients while also managing moisture during germination.
been watching some of these videos looking for tips on how to redo my entire lawn and after seeing how much work is involved I have decided to just do zero scape so I never have to lift a finger again.
Nice detailed tutorial. I like using a 50/50 mix of organic compost and peat moss to lightly cover and protect the seed. I've used the EZ straw w/tack in the past, but often there's seed heads mixed in and will germinate, but dies off eventually. Otherwise protects well. Good luck with the neighbor's reno. And pray for no downpours. ~ mike
New subscriber to your channel. I'm very impressed in your content and want to say thank you for taking your time to educated those looking for the information you provide. Thanks again and I look forward to learning more from future videos.
After you scalp the lawn, maybe power rake, if you want to kill off any grass or weeds that may still be present will glyphosate inhibit the growth of the seed you will sow? Whether a blanket or spot spraying application? Thinking about renovating my yard later in the summer closer to fall. Thanks Ryan!
Ryan I am new to your channel but had to give you a shout out. Your videos are fantastic and easy to understand. The best part of your work for me is that the content is “actionable” meaning that it’s easy to comprehend and then apply. Your relaxed personality and respect for all methods brings credibility to your preferred tools and products.
Ryan, summer is begging to wind down and I'm preparing to spot seed for fall. I've been watching your videos and they're very helpful. Do you have a video of a sample annual schedule? A quick all in one how to guide (annual schedule). You definitely have enough content to throw something together. I believe this would be extremely popular, especially with us lawn novices.
INCREDIBLE videos man. Long time watcher here. Always clear and concise. Thank you for your knowledge 👍😁 I need to tackle my back yard, but have a few other projects (finding a way to keep a female dog off the lawn) to get done first.
Compost probably has some level of weed seeds. Would peat moss have less or none? Do you recommend the wood fiber blanket over top of the light peat moss layer?
As aspiring lawn nut I was wondering how you deal with neighbors yard's that may not be taken care of as well as yours? Do you have problems with weeds or seed contamination from them blowing their clippings into your yard.
Fantastic video, very clear & to the point. I'm at the prep stage of my renovation, going to be putting down a 2nd dose of non-selective herbicide this weekend, to kill the old grass. Had a question for the yard enthusiasts: I have an electric dethatcher, as well as an electric tiller. Should I just dethatch the yard once the grass is dead or till the area, as well, to get rid of as much of the old turf as possible? Thanks in advance!
Definitely the best and most detailed lawn renovation video out there! So thankful you made it so simple and clear. I’m currently renovating my jungle of a lawn that has so many different types of grass/crabgrass and every weed you can think of... I’m in the process of killing everything off but some clusters of thick finger grass still lingers. Do you ever suggest using a tiller to get rid of these types of grasses? Or possibly using the tiller to help level a small lawn?
You can use a tiller. The issue typically means it might bring even more weed seeds to the surface as well as settling more after tilling since the ground will be softer.
Thanks Ryan, this video is perfect for my upcoming lawn renovation -- straight to the point with great explanations :) I'm planning to have an irrigation system installed and to redo the lawn with possibly granite KBG.
I’m 9 days into my first renovation (killed 4000 sqft of TTTF) to start over with a new variety of fescue. So far not so good. I have quite a few areas that have only puddled with water. I didn’t add any topsoil because when I scalped the old fescue, the exposed dirt looked ok. The good news is the new fescue is coming in, so I should have some time to re-seed the areas that did not germinate in the beginning. I’m open to any advice. Thx !
Awesome video! Very informative and to the point. I started the renovation process of my yard here in Chattanooga, TN about a month ago. The grass is beginning to grow nicely but I can already see the neighbors wild Bermuda creeping in on the edges. Any advice on how to keep it from overtaking my new tall fescue (SS1000) yard again?
Seeking advise. I’ve seen all you videos and they are super informative. I recently had major work to back yard. The bob cat damaged my front lawn so decided to stop watering to start fresh. I’m stuck between aeration or using tiller to remove old grass since half was sunk in by bobcat an is all dirt now. If I can send pics to give better illustration let me know. Btw I live in Southern California and also wondering what seed is best for the climate. Well thanks for all the information.
Ryan, I spreader the seeds and peat moss Monday Unfortunately there was a heavy rain this morning Wednesday. I should delay the work. Anyhow it is too late. One section of my yard is sloped to back yard. The seeds may be washed out. What I can do to rescue my project? Reseed this section now, or wait and see. I wish I could attach a picture.
Your new long podcasts discussing renovations with Ryan make this (which was excellent) basic, rushed, with no depth. The long podcasts absolutely have taken your content to next level. Seriously keep that going, and Ryan is the perfect speaker, a pleasure to listen to his extensive level of experience backed knowledge. (Although Ryan has never said “I don’t know” which eventually will be noticed and lower trust in his statements and shows a lack of humility which clashes with your humble sincere character which transcends humility, honesty and an empathy for viewers trying to learn over the whole vibe of the channel.
Thank you for your videos. I always like your videos are detailed and easy. I live in New Jersey and bought a new house. I would like to redo the whole lawn front back. I have a lot of patches nearly no grass. What is the grass you recommend and where I can buy a quantity because it’s about 2 to 3000 ft.².
Thank you so much Ryan! I followed these steps and my neighbor and friends have told me how amazing my lawn looks! So thank you for all the information and having a great elite KBG and rye mix! The seeding project turned out amazing
Excellent video. Thanks. I've been looking for one of those top dressing rakes. Haven't had much luck, unless I want to wait 6 weeks for one from China. I live in Canada though. Even landscaping businesses don't seem to know what they are.
I just bought your leveling tool on your website, and I’m going to buy the compost spreader too. (Hope it arrives soon otherwise my back is going to hate me :) I procrastinated. Swardman Electra will be here in March! CANNOT WAIT! I killed my lawn two weeks ago and it’s finally there and ready to be worked on. Problem is now the leaves are falling all over my lawn! Busting out the Sun Joe tomorrow. Going to be 80. Should I stop and do the renovation in the spring? I’m kind of worried about the temperature now here in Minnesota. Do you think my “sissy-grass” will survive if I seed next weekend? Would love to know your thoughts! You’re the best, really appreciate the content!
what about if you are sodding? also, what about the realignment of your existing irrigation system, to make certain that sprinkler heads are in the right coverage zones, are of the "correct" head type, are aligned, etc?
I had no luck with Tenacity as a pre-emergent at all. I sprayed it per instructions on a newly seeded lawn over 4" of new loam and withing a few weeks, I had crabgrass that nightmares are made of. The grass came in pretty well but crabgrass and goosegrass was really bad. i have since used Tenacity as a post-emergent in spots and I'm having some positive results so far but the jury is still out.
Hey Ryan, on the leveling could I use a soil sand mix? Something like 80/20? The reason I ask is that I’ve heard top soil settles after a while (obviously) and I have a fairly bumpy lawn. I just want to smooth it a little this year and then a little bit more next season and so on...
Great video! Thank you! We bought our house 1 year ago and I am getting ready to do my first renovation and I have a question: There are some areas in our yard that were poorly mulched with plantings that we want to convert to grass. In lieu of steps 2-4, can I simply roto-till the entire erea to remove all unwanted mulch/rocks/dead stuff? Then I can level off the entire surface with screened loam? Any advice would be great! I look forward to the DIY sprinkler vid next!
Currently undertaking this project myself and will be tilling as well. Mainly as a means of knocking down two high spots of compacted dirt in the yard. From there everything else is pretty even already. I’m also thinking of pouring topsoil evenly and then just going over it with the tiller one last time to mix it into the existing soil. How’d it go for you?
If you have never dethatched I feel it is a good idea to use a manual dethatcher so you not only see what the machine should do but also appreciate the machine. That was my experience. The manual dethatcher not only gets up the dead grass but rips up and thins the weed and clover vines out.

Great video Ryan. This is extremely comprehensive and should be a great road map for people looking to do a renovation this fall.
Thanks Lushy
Thanks mr. Knorr I really appreciate this video
Thanks for this video with time stamps to get to the proper steps.
Great video. Total beginner here, why do you kill the existing grass first?
To plant the new grass seed and not have any of the old crappy grass there to mix in with the new
Such a great and informative video! Thank you for you for everything! #lawngoals
Great all-in-one video
That peat moss spreader is a back saver 👍 Thanks for another great video. 😀
Appreciate.. in NJ and working every step of your videos...
Ryan I am a Huge Fan You are sooooo helpful with a renovation i did a couple weeks ago!!! Thank you!!!!!
been watching some of these videos looking for tips on how to redo my entire lawn and after seeing how much work is involved I have decided to just do zero scape so I never have to lift a finger again.
Not first but still excited to be here!!
The Ryan Knorr Special Seed Blend😎👊
Good advice, thank you. How would you suggest I go about doing 3 acres? Just watering that alone is going to be a nightmare.
Great guide! Very all-encompassing.
~ mike
We need a Ryan Knorr here in Texas. Really needing to know how all this works here
Great video approaching my first overseed soon. I enjoy watching your videos!
New subscriber to your channel. I'm very impressed in your content and want to say thank you for taking your time to educated those looking for the information you provide. Thanks again and I look forward to learning more from future videos.
Welcome aboard!
Thanks Ryan! Been waiting for this one! I'm doing my Fall lawn renovation (hopefully soon).
Woohoo!New Ryan Knorr Vid! Great editing BTW
Incredibly helpful
Another outstanding video 👍🌱👍! Glad to see that you are okay after what happened in Iowa last week. My prayers are with you guys.
Great idea for a one and done video!😎👊 Cheers!🍺🍺
Killed the front lawn, tilled it (it was what I had) and seeded in WV Sunday. We got 5 inches of rain in 4 days. Gotta love it 😂
Never fails
Just another great video!!! You make things a lot easier for everyone thank you!!
You have inspired me to expand my operation!
Excellent presentation!
I have a lawn guide on my site
Great tips moving forward, thanks!
added to favorites!! great video, thank you!
Very very informative like always
Love this channel.

Absolutely impressed!...
Excellent video!
Thanks cant wait for Reno time
As aspiring lawn nut I was wondering how you deal with neighbors yard's that may not be taken care of as well as yours?
Very well put together video , as always :) it has been amazing to watch you work your magic 🌱
I really think you should come and do a renovation on my lawn and bring everything I need to do it. See ya next week?
I bet that is going well with the storm
Survived it like a champ
Awesome info! I live in Davenport,IA and just did a some work on my (big) yard how do keep them dang birds from eating all the seed!
Dam youI just fired my lawn care company so I can get my hands in the dirt. You inspired me to take my lawn back.
Great minds think alike, I filmed this very thing at the weekend.... You beat me to it 🙈🙈🙈🙄😂
Thank you so much Ryan!
Thanks Ryan. Great step by step.
Thank you! We bought our house 1 year ago and I am getting ready to do my first renovation and I have a question:
There are some areas in our yard that were poorly mulched with plantings that we want to convert to grass.
Loved your video bud
