Just wanted to say I have a killer backyard now and I've got you and these videos to thank, bud. This might sound hyperbolic, but it's nuts to me that I watched all this stuff for free, from home and then just...followed it. There's a lot of bad crap going on in the world but if I'm being a glass-half full kinda guy, I'm still in awe of what is available at my fingertips.
    Thanks, Ryan!

Great video. I have a tough time being patient with something I’m not sure is going to work or not so hearing someone else say just trust the process and if you do everything I’m telling you it will work out is really important to me. I’ve watched my neighbors till or cover their lawn with top soil and try to re plant grass with awful results. I’m being patient to learn what to do before I start but if I wasn’t watching these videos and hearing “be patient” over and over I’d have a hard time after doing all the work and spending all the money believing that it’s going to turn out well.

2:29 'Start renovation about 6-8 weeks before frost date.' Not only that, but also when shade hits your lawn cause of less daylight. By october my lawn is full in shade and it gets pretty wet, frost usually starts somewhere november/december. I have to start renovation in august to have the renovation succeed. In spring renovation starts later, usually in april in stead of march.

I will be doing some over seeding. Probably go all fescue. I have an area really thin out after so much of it just laid down. I always have issues on this side. Its a small strip south side. Watering did not seem to help. Did all other fert and insect control. Right now all this dry and hot hot days its mostly going to sleep. I have to either hand water or sprinklers. This race never ends !!

Hello Ryan, and nice to meet you. I've been watching a few of your videos and I think you're doing a great job. I'm not at all educated in lawn care but I want to be, and I also don't have all the tools that you use. I live in NC (I have sandy soil) and I'm a homeowner who's inspired to have a nice-looking lawn but I really don't know how to but I do the best with what I know or think I know. I try very hard but with little to no real results. I don't know anything about what kind or type of chemicals to buy or use on my lawn, don't know what I even need to help the lawn. All I do is try different things and hope for the best.
I'm working on my backyard right now - I started a couple of months ago (again) by tilting the soil and throwing in fertilizer (10-10-10), seeding the lawn (laying pine straw on top of it) a few days later with tall sun/shade fescue grass, watering twice a day with very little rain (early morning and late evening w/temperatures in the 90's +) right now I have a small amount of grass but I should have more growth and I feel like giving up. Maybe I should purchase a step-by-step guidebook, and do some homework before trying again. I also installed an inground sprinkler system (3 zones) water supply from my well. Your videos do help me understand what steps are required to grow beautiful grass but I do not understand how to apply your lessons and techniques, to resolve my scenario. Do you have or recommend a step-by-step guide I can follow and what chemicals I would need to treat my lawn? Thank you and take care :)

Love the video. Nice job. One critique, and I see this on all the grass tuner channels, just rent a sod cutter. Takes a couple hours, gets it down to dirt, take and remove material, and you’re done. If starting in the morning, you can remove the old yard, and seed the new yard in one day. Shit you can level the thing to if you’re feeling froggy lol.

Ryan, can you create a video going more in depth to how you’ve successfully grown grass in your campsite area? My parents have a lower yard that is very similar to that area, surrounded my trees and not much sunlight. Over the years moss has taken over and killed off the grass. What are your suggestions on overcoming this and maintaining a healthy lawn in an environment such as that so that we can avoid moss taking over again? My dad had an accident last year and hasn’t been able to do much so I’m trying to help do this for him so that he doesn’t have to worry about it.

Wow, this video wants me to do a complete lawn renovation, which, after the last time, I said I would never do it again, so I have been over-seeding. Unfortunately over-seeding results are less than desirable because the existing lawn has so many undesirable grasses, especially bentgrasss. My last renovation about 25 years ago. was so labor-intensive it turned me off to ever wanting to do that again...so I just lived with the lawn the way it was. My previous renovation involved using a sod-cutter to remove the previous lawn, hauling the sod away, bringing in topsoil, leveling, seeding...etc. All of which I did myself. The method that you show seems so easy (comparatively) that I might just do it. I only question if a lawn rake will cut the sod enough to give the seed the airy soil that it needs?

    • @bmac9706
      @bmac9706 2 года назад +1

I have always been a lawn guy and one of my neighbors even calls me “The Sod Father”
We recently purchased 20 acres of farmland in NW Indiana that we will be building a new home on. I realize I won’t be able to keep up my current level of lawn but still want it to be as nice as possible. My specific question is about a seed type called Black Beauty Tall Fescue. My research is showing a dark green color with a very deep root structure so it is quite drought resistant. Your opinion would be appreciated! Thanks and keep up the good work!

My rule of thumb for the past couple years has worked well, I do my aerate and over-seed the first week of September. I do fescue in the back yard and PRG in the front. It’s been 4 years now and it’s starting to look pretty uniform but I see patches of junk I’m tempted to kill off 100% and overseed with PRG. But over the years I’ve been seeing reasons why I think my overall soil health isn’t as good as it should be. Seems to be sand heavy loam. Wondering how I can fix my soil. My grass goes dormant really fast in a couple spots.

Sir, I don’t have words to say how helpful this video was. So, can you please tell me how to deal with hard rain when I just put seed out. I have a big lawn that is almost 100% crabgrass and clover. I normally would kill or pull out all the gloriously healthy crabgrass and replant seeds. We’re still 3 months from first frost. Should I actually just leave them in and overseed my weed lawn with your seeds so that my seeds don’t get washed away? when the new grass is a little older and the crabgrass and clovers and wild violets starts to go dormant, just rake them out? Then use pre emergent in early spring. I’m worried that if I kill it all now and put out seeds they all will sprout up together and the crabgrass with choke the new grass seeds. I can’t spray with a pre emergent can I?

Patiently waiting for Fall to dive in... I need to start the leveling process as my mower jumps around on me quite a bit now. Am I wrong to do things in the following order ~late August/early Sept (cool season Kentucky blue here in Western NY). Going to mow low (2"), dethatch (have a sunjoe 15''), core aerate, level, fertilize, and then overseed. Too much for the yard to handle? 6,000 sq feet so planning on grabbing 8-10 yards of topsoil to start and see where that takes me but I know leveling just right will take a few seasons.

I dont know if I should renovate or overseed...The main section I want to redo completely, the smaller sections are OK...It was SO great at the beginning of the year and has gone to complete sh!t! I may have to admit I have no idea what I am doing... I throw myself at your mercy... ;-) Love the vids...

What if I don't know my main grass type and it's overgrown with weeds and there's another grass type mixed in? I'm in a warm season area.

What if I hate my soil because it’s mostly clay? Should I still do the same process but bring in topsoil or compost in a solid layer, level, seed, and peat to cover seed?

Would you recommend using Hydretain at time of overseeding if you're not using peat moss to cover?

Phenomenally timed! I have a whole lot of construction in my backyard finishing up soon and I'll be laying down 4500 sq ft worth of lawn! Trying to figure out the earliest date I can do it without totally screwing myself over with heat. Any suggestions?

So I did a soil test and it came back with my phosphorus really high and a deficiency in potassium, moving forward to a overseed in my yard soon should I still put down starter fertilizer on the entire lawn..since that's high in phosphorus?

Thanks for all you do, Ryan! I attempted a late spring renovation with your 80/20 BG/PRG and I've been fighting crab grass all summer (had a very old zoysia lawn). I'm in SW Indiana. I've given it multiple applications of Drive XLR8 with MSO (thank God for the Sprayers Plus backpack sprayer), but it just keeps spreading. We had some freak heavy rains followed by a couple heat waves, so only about half of the lawn has stayed. I'm having an irrigation system installed (probably in November) but they'll have to install a second meter (likely in October), so I'd like to restart the renovation again in the fall, but don't want to have to kill everything off again if half made it through the summer. Any suggestions on targeting crab grass prior to another renovation without having to kill it all off with Glysophate? Thanks again!

So what is the exact sequence when aerating and overseeding and top dressing.?? Is this correct?
    1-aerate
    2-seed
    3- top dressing with Loam
    4- apply starter fertilizer
    5-water in
I always leave the soil pieces that come out when aerating.
    Please advise thanks

Hi Ryan (or anyone else), I followed you in the last 2 years or so and this autumn I plan to have a overseeding in my lawn, problem is that I live in EU (Romania to be more precise) so if you have any suggestion of where I can get seeds, fertilizers and any other products for the lawn it would help e a lot.
    Thank you!
