You first point 100%. I did a complete renovation last year. Newbie. We have warmer falls and short season before temps are just too cold. I seeded too late even though it was “65” barely got any growth before winter. Suffered throughout all year because of it so looking to overseed sooner rather than later and get 1-2 mows in this fall before it gets too cold!!!
Thank you for making these videos. You have really helped me transform my lawn. Keep up the good work!👍
Had a few bare spots last fall. Didn't get around to planting new perennial ryegrass till late October, early November. I live in upstate NY and the seed still germinated last year and looks great this year. Ryegrass is awesome.
Amen to that
doesn't rye get crushed in those summer heat days without water?
Just got done aerating picked up the phone to order my sand and this video popped up. Throwing down some Ryan Knorr Elite Perennial Rye. Perfect timing.
Ryan, ever thought about using an agriculture type irrigation system (corn/bean fields) for your plots? The ones on wheels. It would eliminate the need to have static irrigation lines planted (static would limit you in the future if you ever wanted to increase or decrease plot sizes). Your plots are identical in terms of size and you have a adequate walking space between each lot for the wheels of a mobile irrigation system to move. The system could make slow, consistent passes over each plot, yet be mobile enough to allow future alterations. Property looks good, keep on killing (and growing) it!
I'm thinking that is probably going to cost a little more than some pipe and a few sprinklers haha
Hey Ryan got a question… I’m planning on overseeding this fall, and I noticed I’ve got fungus in my lawn, should I apply fungicide first and get rid of it, or should I apply after overseeding? Will it even effect the seeds/new grass?
Dont think ill be able to do much this year but you better believe this winter im going to binge watch your videos because come spring im doing a 100% front yard redo. New dirt, new grading, new type of grass, aeration, dethatching. Yea im a newb but im sure you'll help me get through it! Amazing work and knowledge.
As always, super excited to see how these new projects go. So much getting done before your home is even built! 😜
perfectly timed. I just started killing my lawn this week! Love and appreciate your videos and sharing of passion for lawn care.
I will be curious what you do for an irrigation system. I have about 2 acres of grass that I mow and am considering putting in a system
Love your dedication keep going! 👍
7 days and my little Bluegrass fellas are popping up. Stayed on top of irrigation and finally got some rain in Northeast Ohio.
Been pregerminating my mostly KBG seed for 4 days now and it's going down today!
I just got a good 3 days of rain went from 90 to 70 back up to 85 now a couple more days rain
Rain bird makes a quick disconnect in ground irrigation system that could be plumed in permanent at a later date. That could be something you look into.
So much work! Loving the experiments!💪
One of the most relaxing channels (not for you) to watch on youtube. Well done, mate.
Just what i was waiting to hear from you my friend.....🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝
In NE ohio.... we've had a mild August so my seed is going down this week. I'm currently pre-germinating that seed. Should see full 'pop' of the fescue 3 to 4 days after spreading it. I had good results during summer heat with pre-germinated seed so hoping for a successful fall seed...
Are you pregermanating Bluegrass? In a soil mix or dipping in water?
@@zizou3550 right now I'm pre germinating a spreading variety of TTT fescue. Early summer I did pregerminate KBG but it was my last 5 pounds. It popped in 3 days, full germination in 5 to 6. That was with 80° temps. I'll be able to get more of the KBG in the spring and I'll definitely pre-germinate again.
I put the seed in a paint strainer bag and place that in a 5gal bucket. I used the Milorganite web site article as a guide and ran a few tests. What I found was the soak durations were far to short. I went 10 days with the KBG and could have pushed that another day or 2. The fescue was soaked for 6 days and again I think another day or 2 was possible.
The video I been waiting for! Thank you
Hi Ryan brilliant video! Just wondering what did you kill the grass off with? And does it not damage the new seedling planted in there?
Looking forward to the fall season. Also very interested in the upcoming microclover ☘️ project. I have an area where grass does not want to grow and I’m considering microclover.
Looking good Ryan. I would recommend going above ground on the irrigation it will be easier on maintenance and leave you to focus on the product. I would also consider doing some type of edging to minimize your ongoing edging work. Just some thoughts the Barndo is looking good too.
What is the order if you choose to do liquid aeration? 1- mow low 2- scarify 3-mow low 4- liquid aerate 5-seed 6- fertilize
Hey Ryan, maybe I missed something but have you considered maintaining the spaces between the plots with some type of pre emergent? If nothing else it will make it easier to maintain by hand
Since ground here in Connecticut is bone dry, I'm going to wait until at least early September to seed this year.
Laid my KBG overseed here in utah yesterday, Aug the 18th. Crossing fingers.
Great info, I’m planting a new backyard and not sure when to plant
Will aerate and overseed and top dress Sept 10th frost usually first week or second week of November here
Great video! We will be installing sprinklers ourselves at our property this weekend and my parents place (2 houses down the street) as part of a huge lawn reno project at both places. We are looking to get the several bags of your rye grass down on the ground by next weekend (Up here in MA)
Great video! I really appreciate your help!
Bermuda aaaaaanndd ZOYSIA!!! I’m lovin’ it. I’ve been wanting to get your opinions on zoysia for the longest time. Awesome plans Ryan. Much respect comin from miami fl
Using tips from your videos helped a lot with my total renovation project ( backyard only). It looks awesome. I'm amazed at how thick it got once it took off. I used a push mower the first 3 mows then 3 times a week with my normal mower and now down to 1. Next season the front will be a breeze now that i know what im doing thanks to you. Oh yeah and my dog Gnarly thanks you too. Even though he gets limited play time on it at the moment.
Are these recommendations Conor Ward approved 😂😂
No.
🤷♂️😂😂😂😂
Right?!? I need to know!! 😳😂😂 Jk.
Who? Wrong channel bro 🤣🤣
What's your take on subirrigation use with seeding?
Great content as always Ryan. Appreciate everything you bring to us and how you've helped my yard look over the past couple years! I'm planning some renovation this season on a small portion of my lawn that didn't make it through the summer and was wondering what the product is that you use to kill the 4 plots? I live in CA (the part that gets 110 degrees in the summer and 30 degrees in the winter) so not everything is always legal and I just want to make sure I'm approaching this reno the right way!
Why not do a plot of reel-mowed bentgrass?
Is it too early to dethatch?
Really depends on how your weather is trending
Hey Ryan long time fan of your videos had a few questions If you have time. We just built our home I was able to seed the front yard this spring but had to wait until fall for the backyard once I had irrigation. I live in Idaho and I’m planting kbg we’ve had a very extreme summer most 100 degree days on record and still more to come. I’m trying to figure out when I should put my seed down as are first frost is typically around Oct 15th I’m going to pre germinate the seed so hopefully that helps with the success rate. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
What about in Southernmaine.
Looking good!
I'm gonna have to pass on my lawn this year with our water restrictions in California... 😭
Looking good Ryan
what was that behind the mower in the clip you were showing like around the 2:30 mark?
Thanks Ryan
How can I send you pics of my awful spot in my lawn and your recommendation?
Hi Ryan - I live in New Jersey. My front lawn is primarily CrabGrass. Should I use Tenacity on the CrabGrass to kill it? I would then Fertilize, Aerate and over seed. (i do have an irrigation system).
If it's all crabgrass I would just use a complete grass and weed killer and start over
@@ryanknorrlawncare Is there any product you recommend?
Are you going to be able to get your lawn around the house seeded with the current construction?
Any advice for Bermuda grass encroaching on my tall fescue? My turf was going so well and then this Bermuda has been a nightmare. How to integrate with overseeding/fertilizing?
Could you use that 1 1/2 plastic edging to keep the edges in check?
Do you recommend using a slit seeder or is a regular broadcast spreader fine for overseeding? I don’t have an irrigation system and I’m thinking a slit seeder will help keep seeds moist between periods of rain
Thank you brother
Are the reel mowed plots smooth enough without leveling first?
Should be fine to get started
Do you ever pre-germinate your seed before putting it down to shorten that period?
I haven't
Hey now! Love all your content, bud. It has really helped me. I live in Michigan, in a suburb of Detroit. I have Kentucky bluegrass and I want to aerate and over seed this year. What kind of seed do you recommend?
Have you had any issues using peat moss to cover seed? Worried how acidic PM is.
I have not. You should be using a very small amount on top
Great vid as always sir. I’m planing to buy your silica product on the website. Is there any videos on YT of you using that product. Thanks you
Have you looked into rhizomatous tall fescue (RTF)? I’m curious if that is one of “unique” grass types you mentioned in the video
I already have a spreading fescue in my normal plots
I am looking to overseed my backyard this year, but I got weeds in the backyard. Can you still overseed with weeds or will that cause issues?
I think I screwed up
I applied ( image all in one weed killer hose sprayer) to my lawn last week and was planning on over-seeding this week.
First frost is 10-31-22. Can I still over seed ?
Any recommendations for a lawn that needs a pre emergents for poa annual but also has a torched lawn from drought and possibly fertilizer burn? Zone 6a cape cod
Probably have to grow some new grass or you'll have nothing there
Question did you ever do a video on disease prevention and care? Seems like all these channels just show maintenance never prevention or how to fix diseased lawns.
do your products ship to canada
A clover plot? Ryan dont turn on us ! :)
Lookin good! House seems to be making progress too. Have you had any experience with RTF spreading fescue? Does it really work?
The fescue I have in my plots is a spreading type. It won't be anything drastic
My lawn took a beating this last month. I will definitely need to reseed this fall.
I'm not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree. Please, somebody, post a link for Ryan's other channel.

What did you spray on the grass so kill it??

Hi Ryan. I have a Tall Fescue front lawn. Its was sodded two years ago when we moved in. I love the grass but it struggles in the heat (and this year we only had about 6 weeks of really hot weather). I was thinking about Aerating it this season and overseeing with perennial rye grass. How does rye grass do with hot weather. I live in New Jersey (zip code 08085). If rye is not a good choice, what would you recommend? Thanks. And I love watching the bardominium videos.
Fescue would actually be the best choice for your situation. I would say you probably want to see if there's anything you can do to improve the soil. Check out this video for more info - ruclips.net/video/khcjQvABIPI/видео.html
Do you currently water the plots the same amount of favor the kbg or rye?
The blue and rye have been getting about the same. A little less on the fescue
Nice information just what I needed to hear. I do have a question I just put down some Bio Advance for fungus today. How long should I wait before seeding? I'm in Va and will be seeding with MVS tttf. Thank you much.
Shouldn't affect the seeding
@@ryanknorrlawncare thank you very much. Waiting to see the finish of your new home.
Born and raised in Iowa! What product did you use to kill off the reel mow spots? Sounded like you are able to seed shortly after ? Thanks
Spray Out Grass With This - amzn.to/3SSOdU3 (affiliate link)
Thank you!
All of your tips and trips are Awesome RYAN!! You help with so much!! Hopefully your community can help me hit 1,000 subscribers so I can get my channel off the ground!! Thanks!! Thanks for being you!!
For my fall fertilizer applications, approx how much nitrogen should I be applying? I was planning on putting down two applications of 0.75lbs/1000sq ft. Is that more or less than you recommend?
Check out the fall video in the description. That will explain
Can I overseed and get good results with out aerating?
Despite the aeration benefits I've never found it good for overseed. You need to expose the soil more than aerate. Cut the grass low and dethatch. Where you're able to work the soil... thin spots.... use a garden Weaselor similar
Thanks!!
Level 3 no watering!!!
🌱👍
Great stuff. I'm looking forward to starting my fall fertilizer schedule!
cant wait for the reel mowed fine fescue!
As I attempted to say (before someone had to ruin the nice comment)it's been nice watching you grow in your online careers and the success you created. You and Kelsey are talented and you'll always have a loyal customer with your online store since I can't seem to rid myself of bentgrass
The question I have is does a pre-emergent to prevent poaanna also prevent the new grass seed from germinating?
Love the videos - we live in Snoqualmie WA and although we have some hot days (like 10 over 90 a year) it is not that cold in the winter but OMG we get double the rain of Seattle - 56 inches but it all comes in the fall winter. No rain for 10 weeks so far.. I love lawns (tall or short) but I also have a 75 lb rough collie who loves to play on the lawn (she doesn't dig) but I can't figure out what seed to do with my lawn.. +Do I rip it all out and start over or over seed it?
Ok moved to Kentucky 2 years ago. Been paying for lawn care and I have not been satisfied so I’m going to try doing my self. Looking for help I would like kinda like local not Florida lol.
Finally seeing the beautiful state you live in I like it here I'm in fort maddison right now heading to des Moines then cedar rapids within the next couple days !!! Love you content man keep up the great work!!
can you do a video about applying insecticides herbicides and fungicide and if you can apply them in the same week if not same day thank you
What's better...Nitrogen or Potassium? We get information to use both.
our lawn got DESTROYED this summer :-(
Agree with you. I like to get fall seeding going earlier and later for reasons you stated. I want the seedlings to mature as far as possible before a hard frost.
What do you hope to learn from all the different test plots?
you need to setup online cam ))))
Any suggestions on how to overseed when in a drought? I'm in the Northeast and we're currently in a D-1 with no real rain in the forecast. I was planning on starting dethaching and seeding the last weekend of August.
Pre-germinating seed will have a considerable savings on water however even with that you'll need to make sure it gets water/rain once placed
@@jcs1758 What do you mean by pregerminating?
I followed Milorganites procedure to pregerminate. Placed seed in paint strainer bags and soaked in water(5gal bucket) for X number of days. Changed water every 12 hours.
Check Milorganites site and RUclips. The durations suggested are general in nature...I more than doubled the times.... its all based on the seed. I have 1 spreading tall fescue that needed 5 to 6 daysand another needed 4 days.
The KBG I used needed 19 to 12
I'll be seeding here soon
I can’t tell if the SeedSuperstore has discontinued SS9000 or not. No Perennial Rye on their site right now at all. Would your Rye mix well with the SS9000?
Yes
So I live in wisconsin and what that deep green grass. I want to overseed this fall.. what type of see mix you recommend? I like having my grass 2.5 to 3 in
ryanknorrlawncare.com/product/ryan-knorr-lawn-care-elite-ryegrass/
I planted my first major renovation project about two weeks ago... mid August and I'm already seeing the baby grass popping thru. I will overseed the rest of it probably after labor day. You have taught me so much these last two years. Thank you sir.
First Aussie 😁
Planted my Sissy Grass + Lawn Rebel Grass mixture (40/60 PRG-KBG) last weekend and 5 days out the Sissy Grass is already up. ❤️ Sissy Grass
Is there a good pre emergent for fine fescue? I just did a full lawn renovation this weekend with super seed store SS6000. It's mostly a fine fescue mix with kbg. From what I've read tenacity can be rough on fine fescues
What’s a good seed for full Sun and not a lot of water in the summer months?Last few years in southeastern Wisconsin has been bone dry.
