Really timely video for so many of us struggling with water and color issues as the heat cranks up. I like the message that it’s OK to let your grass go dormant if you need to, not that I personally plan to. There’s always turf paint😆!
Thanks Boss. did some major leveling last Saturday (June 25th) and am finally watering my yard. I'm in WA and our temps have been super low this spring. Thanks for all your tips throughout the years.
hey i'm in WA too :P but the temps now have been in the 90's and 100's for like what 2... 2.5 weeks now?! oye its dreadfulllll! and my dad kinda killed the lawn with over fertilizing or it getting clumped together
All my neighbors’ lawns are going brown and I’m in week three of an Arden 15 seeding. We are in central Texas with drought restrictions. Daily highs in the 100s and we haven’t had a day of rain since I seeded. First two weeks I hand watered three hours a day now I’m down to an hour every other day and she is coming in great 😎 my neighbors are getting dominated by a 15 day old lawn 😂👌
I try not to water, but use liquid aerate, iron and protein-based N before it gets hot- along with a full app of Hydretain granuless before the dry season starts. I usually follow up with occasional watering, a half app of Hydretain along with taller mowing in mid July-Aug. This usually gets me through until Fall, unless there is a drought. Hydretain is expensive, but so is watering- especially if you don't have an irrigation system.
Yep, we went from red thread with the 90 degrees and that humidity to now just 90 degrees and dry. At least 90 and dry will dry up the fungus and then we can push it out with nitrogen and water.
Can you talk more about irrigation, the best practices, types of products for different budgets and yard sizes? Also what should the grass height be in summer for cool season grass?
Thank you for mentioning the rye grass. I’m in a drought area and have a mixture of blue grass and rye. Some of the rye hadn’t been doing well as we have a sprinkler problem and have just been watering with a hose. The guy who did it says he may have to replace some, but hoping that’s going dormant rather than dying, but your video was very helpful. I did spread fertilizer as well as slug and snail repellent on it to see if that will revive some of this.
So my last soil test i sent in was all the bare spots in my lawn... extremely high levels of Copper and Zinc... if I'm not mistaken both can be found in most fungicides... careful you don't overuse a fungicide to the lawn's detriment
As western colorado warms up more and more I'm starting to battle Bermuda grass in my fescue... it has been a disaster. When the Bermuda is happy the fescue is bad and when the fescue is happy the bermuda is bad. So planning a reno in the fall and thinking of a KBG blend.
I'm about 20 miles north of San Antonio and fighting the yard now. 100+ degrees now for at least 3 weeks with no rain. Have several large hotspots with what appears to have some compaction. Sprayed dish soap and will be drilling the soil soon. Zoysia with a lot of clay. One part of the yard really holds water(it's downhill) and the other is hotspots. Added higher flow heads in a couple of places that were a problem and that is helping some. And now I have some rust - my fault for watering too late in the day but too hot to treat.
I had the same issue with our lawn turning brown when I mowed them after a long time. comparing it with the frequency of cutting the more often you mow the greener the laws are.
unfortunately my lawn started turning on me first week of June, 2 really hot days and it had enough and threw in the towel early this year. I fertilized mid may spring so it's certainly keeping greener and healthier looking than anyone around but that sucked anyhow. (southern Ontario here) We only get to water 1 day a week between 2 particular times of that particular day as well so very restrictive. I water once a week for maybe half an hour (usually my wife tells me I forgot to turn the sprinkler off so it gets an hour at least most times). I'll usually just end up with sort of a half dormant half decent shape mixed throughout until September. Thanks Ryan for the tips, seems patience and general maintenance to hang on is my current course of action, just seemed to happen a month earlier than usual this year.
My front yard has basically checked out. It's a hodge podge of TTTF, KBG, and KY31. I'll tell you that old school KY31 that's been there forever does not quit. Not a clean cut to mow even with the sharpest blades, but heat, drought, or flaming hot sidewalk will kill it.
I'm in NC with cool blue I haven't cut it in almost 2 weeks now and I won't cut it any lower then 4" when I do cut it ....rain is scarce once every 5 days or longer ....in unirragated
I live in central indiana. What would be the best grass ?…. I’m not sure the type we have. The yard is 24 years old…. That’s when our house was built in the neighborhood.
I live in Central Indiana as well. If you want grass that is drought resistant go with a Turf Type Tall Fescue. I know a guy in Indy that has all TTTF. Looks like a golf course. Wait until 1st week of September to put it down if you can water it enough. If not mid September. Don’t buy box store seed. Get the good expensive stuff. Then follow all of Ryans tips. I have the only green lawn on my block right now. Using sea kelp Humic acid and low nitrogen liquid products. Mowing every 2-3 days. All found on this site. Good luck!
3rd stage drought restrictions here in Central Texas, lawn will be going dormant soon with the 100+ for the last month. My yard was looking amazing this year too..... Maybe next year.
Thanks Ryan! I'm putting a half inch on 25,000 square feet with a 4 sprinkler system on a Melnor programable hose manifold. It's a lot of work and I worry about my well. I think I am going to back it off to quarter inch a week.
Great info Ryan! So far my yard has been hanging on well through the hot temps. I have increased my cut height to 3” compared to last year and I think that is helping a lot. I’m also sharping my blades more often. Still needing to do a renovation at some point though!
Ryan here in western washington state we have been having weather in the 60 to 70 degrees in the month of June 2022. I reseeded my small lawn and 8 days ago and now I have germination taking place.
I live in Oklahoma. Much of this month has been like a blast furnace here. My bermuda grass is already brown. I'll water once a week just to get something on it. But it's already toasted.
I have watered the front yard a couple of times in the last two weeks, just spraying with hose, not measuring it. It is going dormant only on part of the yard, and an area has basically died off where there is some gravel beneath.
It's practically too late for weed control in the summer for a cool season lawn. Unless you have an unlimited supply of water and money to keep it healthy and growing. Really depends on how your summer goes. But to get back to your question about weed control, your safest option would be to hand pull the weeds. Weed killer sprays will just stress out your lawn even more on top of the heat/drought stress and depending on how hot it is, won't affect the weeds all that much if they're not actively growing to get the chemicals flowing through their system. That would be my approach. Someone else might say otherwise
I had some localized brown patches and put down disease ex, I did the “treatment” amount versus “preventative” amount when spreading. It’s been over a week and not much change. Still got the greenest lawn on the block thanks to milorganite but it can always be improved. Hoping that it improves soon.
My yard was doing fine and thought the yellowing was due to the summer heat but nope it was Leaf Spot. Good thing I didn't wait any longer, and unfortunately my yard isn't fence and neighbor's dogs like to pee on it too.
It’s the fertilizer. All my neighbors are getting brown spots and their grass looks dry and dead in this heat. I top dressed with compost in the spring and only used liquid organics and my lawn is green and thriving right now
How often should I water in the summer? I am also in cool season grass zone. I usually water every other day but not water for long when I do water. Seems to be doing well. Grass is thick and dark green almost like a nice carpet. Just wanted to make sure I'm not causing an issue I may be unaware of.
cool season grass typically needs 1.5 to 2" per week. 3days of watering is typical. the trick that too many folks are clueless on is how many minutes each zone needs to run to put down the 1/2" or 3/4" of water per session... assuming you have a sprinkler system. use containers placed in the zone and run the system for 20 minutes... measure, extrapolate. also water early morning allowing enough time for the grass to dry before night fall.. adjust for rainfall too
My lawn is only partially irrigated ( but I manually water the nob-irrigated part) and the entire thing is glowing green while my neighbors lawn (even irrigated ones) are turning brown
I discovered that when I cut the grass one notch lower than regular length I don't get the brow/yellow last years dead grass. My cut is always higher than last years grass.
Hey Ryan, what do you think about doing a turf recovery video? Applying fertilizer to dollar spot fungus areas.... Trying different bagged fungicide products?? I have seen alot of challenged turf this year on my lawns we mow from all the heat and humidity, we have this year..... Turf plot tests at your new home site; Westberrie Acres!!?? Great video too
I think this could be a rough year's for lawns. With the obscene fuel and grocery prices something has got to give and I think it's gonna be lawns unfortunately.
I would agree cut your cool season lawn tall especially in the heat of summer. It’s been hot here and I been cutting my customers lawns and my lawn at 3 3/4. I do want to to some Hyrdrain down. I did an experiment on my channel last summer and I do believe it helps. Great video Ryan and a great reminder to everyone what to look for and do.
It's been a crazy heat wave in Georgia and in some areas it's only rained two to three times in 2 months. I've been watering and increasing my height of cut. Some of my neighbors were watering and even over watering in the evening. They now have what I believe is fungus as their lawns are yellow
Perfect video at the perfect time as my grass has started to brown here in Ankeny. Looks like a bit of rain in the near future. I have also noticed that when walking on my grass that’s in the shade, it’s actually cool to the foot touch; which surprised me.
Looks like I’ve got some creeping bentgrass in a few spots…. Might have to hit it with Tenacity. When would you recommend to start that process in Ohio?
My dad and I were seeing areas turning brown several weeks ago in NY, looking like they were dormant. Then I noticed red thread and both yards got DiseaseEx.
Just to add to that last comment I do water on my irrigation but it really doesn’t do much I try to water every other day for 45 minutes in that area and it doesn’t even look like I water
Southern Wisconsin and my grass was looking great as a first time home owner. Last couple weeks it’s looking brown now. I was going to try watering but think it’s too late now.
Will brown patch develop into a roughly circular dead spot if left untreated? I now have two of theses such dead spots about 8-9” in diameter in different sections of my lawn and am curious as to the cause.
I saw a video that said applying spread sticker or baby shampoo will help with grass browning. The theory was that the soil was too hard for water to be absorbed and that these products would help with that. Is this true?
Hey! I’m having a big problem with creeping thyme in my front yard. Everywhere I search for how to get rid of it just has articles and videos about replacing grass with it as a new ground cover lol. Any advice?
Hey Ryan, I'm planning a complete renovation on my back yard this fall. I'm located in NW GA just inside the transition zone. The area is 50/50 shade. Would I be wrong for using fescue in this area?
What happened to the "I'd Rather Be Mowing shirts " I got one last July 2021 & get some interesting comments when I go out to eat, especially since almost everyone pays a lawn service but a few people in my area of Maryland that do their own.
Sir, I tilled up an entire large section of grass and reseeded last fall with a cool season blend. I was unable to water and it went 100 percent straw like but not dead. My issue is I am selling the house and it went under contract when it was green. Now it looks 100 percent brown. Is there any way to revive this? I'm in NJ.
It’s been hot here in MN. I am free of fungus and noticing just a little stress on my KBG PRG yard, only in an area where irrigation is less than the rest. In May I noticed many more seed heads than normal, I usually mow every 3-5 days but had to let it go 8 due to travel. Since then it has the brown stalks still and not a lot of leaf on the grass. One area I scalped down to 3/4 inch for the kids tee box, normal HOC 2 inches. The tee box has grown back and has no browning at all, in fact, is way greener than the rest. I was thinking of going to 1 inch and letting it come back up but your last talk of not scalping has me wondering. What would you do? Stalks are taking the green away.
@@cooperjack1987 si, now D. Was I cutting with a greensmaster when we worked? I retired it and am back to normal HOC. I’m pretty sure these stalls just need to grow out. If I don’t get a relief in temp, soon I’m being a lawn rebel and scalping.
Next time before it rains, go from your HOC of 2 down to 1. I do t think that would be to hard on it. I just wear the seeding grass with pride knowning that my grass is healthy enough to go to seed...
Mushrooms are harmless to your lawn. They're just there probably due to lots of moisture and feeding on some kind of decaying material that's in the ground. They're usually not there if there isn't enough moisture in the ground. If they grow high enough, you can just mow over them.
Hello Ryan, I’m facing a few grass type weeds in the QC area, not far from you. I know it’s not crabgrass, nor dallisgrass, but I’m not findings good and easy way to identify and treat it. Any hints? Thanks
the one tip that has helped be tremendously up in the northeast is keeping my grass longer. I keep my push mower at the second to highest setting and i don't see my grass getting nearly as brown/yellow and letting the natural rain do most of my watering, when possible. Also , as you mention, not taking too much off at one time, combine that with stress from heat, my grass would be really yellow and take a while to recover.
My lawn is not looking prime in eastern MA. No substantial rain for 2+ weeks. Is it worth plugging this summer before a heavy extended period of rain or just wait till fall with a heavy overseed? Thanks.
Just wait until fall. You'll have a much much higher chance of success and be less stressed, unless you can stay on top of keeping everything hydrated throughout the crazy heat that comes with the long summer days. Way too much work and money involved just to keep grass green when it naturally goes dormant in order to survive. Your life will be so much easier in the fall.
Ryan, I have lots of rye grass from seed purchased from you. I have some serious dead ( brown ) areas that have been hit with very hot sun. Even my irrigation system can’t keep up. I was told by a person who has knowledge of grasses that the rye grass is dead and won’t come back. They said rye dies, doesn’t just go dormant . Is this true? Will I have to over seed that area in the fall? I live in south Jersey and temps have been brutal. Thanks. Bruno
@@brunomaselli4714 it can definitely go dormant or into survival mode and come back but if you have localized spots I would also say it's possible some fungus hit it as well. Overseeding may be necessary but hard to say for sure. This is why I have non irrigated plots and other plots I test to see what kind of abuse things can handle.
I put in tall fescue because that’s what a big sod company sells near Franklin Ohio … I bought their seed 99% tall fescue unlike big box stores that sell it with 30% crap seed and weeds … I had good luck and once you get all the existing weeds in check ( weeds grow faster then the grass) I mowed every 5 days in spring now that it’s hot once every 2 weeks and looks great
Really timely video for so many of us struggling with water and color issues as the heat cranks up. I like the message that it’s OK to let your grass go dormant if you need to, not that I personally plan to. There’s always turf paint😆!

Ha. Just was noticing some brown in my yard and saw this video posted. It's been hot in Indiana!
Me too
Another indiana native here and I second that it is hot 🥵 lol
Ryan! Thanks for not making it 45 min, brother! Mine turned yellow in some spots after some fertilizers and NPK, mostly N.

Any advice?
Let it grow.
Thanks for the great info!
Any experience with Humichar or is it preferred to put down straight biochar and straight humic acid? Thanks in advance.
@@mattb9664 thank you for your insights!!!
Hey Ryan, I'm planning a complete renovation on my back yard this fall. I'm located in NW GA just inside the transition zone. The area is 50/50 shade. Would I be wrong for using fescue in this area?
As long as it's not too dense for shade then fescue should work
What happened to the "I'd Rather Be Mowing shirts "
I got one last July 2021 & get some interesting comments
when I go out to eat, especially since almost everyone pays
a lawn service but a few people in my area of Maryland that
do their own.
Still available in my store on my website
So if the grass is dormant should we water at all?
Former compass?
@@cooperjack1987 si, now D. Was I cutting with a greensmaster when we worked? I retired it and am back to normal HOC.
I’m pretty sure these stalls just need to grow out. If I don’t get a relief in temp, soon I’m being a lawn rebel and scalping.
Next time before it rains, go from your HOC of 2 down to 1. I do t think that would be to hard on it. I just wear the seeding grass with pride knowning that my grass is healthy enough to go to seed...
@@cooperjack1987 I’m scalping Monday! Don’t care I’ll water it
Great information. I notice that am getting mushrooms thur out the lawn. Any thing you know of too use to take care of them .
Any hints? Thanks
Great advice!!
Ryan - I have cool season grass in NJ -fuscue - can I use your product 3-18-18 in July and August ?
What about for those who seeded in spring ?!
Pray 🙏
Should I still fertilize when my grass is dormant?
Definitely not.
the one tip that has helped be tremendously up in the northeast is keeping my grass longer. I keep my push mower at the second to highest setting and i don't see my grass getting nearly as brown/yellow and letting the natural rain do most of my watering, when possible. Also , as you mention, not taking too much off at one time, combine that with stress from heat, my grass would be really yellow and take a while to recover.
do you find well water is better for irrigation than city water ?
Yep. No bleach, more minerals.
We use well water, but also have a smaller pond. Pond water is working best. May add some barrels to collect rain.Hot in NC
Here in CO we use Revive on cool season grass when gets brown. It really helps de compact the soil. Bring the green back.
Great info Ryan
Thanks for the tips.
Where can I get the yellow gauge to check how much water I'm putting down. @4:21.
Why can certain lawns get that pretty line pattern after mowing? Mine never does.
Hi Ryan
Another Great video..can you give me your opinion please on creeping rye grass which has just become available here in the UK
What is the best time to level a lawn on cool season grass?
Early fall
What do you think about Buffalo grass or a fine fescue in Central Ohio? Would it work? I've heard you dont need to mow it much
I put in tall fescue because that’s what a big sod company sells near Franklin Ohio … I bought their seed 99% tall fescue unlike big box stores that sell it with 30% crap seed and weeds … I had good luck and once you get all the existing weeds in check ( weeds grow faster then the grass) I mowed every 5 days in spring now that it’s hot once every 2 weeks and looks great
