In this episode of Cinemassacre's Rental Reviews, Justin and James review Drop Dead Fred from 1991. An unhappy housewife gets a lift from the return of her imaginary childhood friend, Drop Dead Fred. Rik Mayall starred as the title character: a happy, anarchic, and mischievous imaginary friend of a young girl named Elizabeth (Phoebe Cates) and nemesis of her overbearing mother Polly (Marsha Mason). He causes chaos around her home and neighborhood, but nobody can see him except her. When she grows up and has an emotional crisis, he returns to "cheer her up" in his own unique way, causing more chaos than ever before. The supporting cast included Carrie Fisher, Ron Eldard, Tim Matheson, and Bridget Fonda.

You should watch Bottom series and Live stage shows. Slapstick at it's best! Rik Mayall was a legend. His character is childish in this movie I guess.
James, guy, bub, man, dood.
Put that blockbuster card in a frame on a wall. Like behind you in every video or something.
Also this was my sister's favorite movie growing up. She always watched it on her birthday. Maybe she had an imaginary friend? I'm pretty sure it was a cow though....
Remember it like this Rik MAIL
Guys just to let you know Rik Mayall is an absolute comedy legend in the UK, honestly 'the young ones' and bottom are classics here.... especially the young ones!!!
Have you never watched it???
You would definitely love it, you really would!!
Agreed, I couldn’t get into this movie but remember it.
"There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard.
" - Ade Edmondson, 2014
What a great line! You know Rik would've loved that joke. lol
Rik Mayall is an absolute legend here in England, his death more than most celebrities in recent years shocked me and loads of people I know and its hard knowing he's dead. Such a massive influence on British comedy for the last 40 years
True that. He and Ade had me in tears laughing more than anyone else growing up. Bottom Live in particular was brilliant when they broke character. A lot of love with that pair.
Every time i remember he's gone, it gets me a little down. Genuinely one of the funniest people to have ever lived, thank fuck we all got to witness the duo of him and Ade.
He was a legend here i Australia too for me growing up. Bottom is one of my favourite shows ever.
its sucked. me and my dad had to go out for a drive and clear our heads when we found out.
@Cal Alaera but how can he be dead when we still have his poems 😂
As a nation, we all miss Rik Mayall quite a lot in the U.K.
Me too. Watched him in Bottom and The Young Ones and Blackadder too.
@@LW-tb3cz And.. The New Statesman. You could almost believe Rik from TYO became that guy.
@Photography Raptor i dont know if this is a quote or not.....
But ill bite anyway haha

Rik Mayall is an absolute legend. He played this part like all his other parts, completely over the top. I think his best show is Bottom, but the Young Ones is where it all started.
here here
Bottom is one of my all time favorite shows. James should review it cause it’s truly one of the best comedic shows ever made.
Bottom’s an absolute classic
Rik Mayall in The New Statesman is a classic as well...
Man bottom is my favourite. I've seen all of it. Including the live shows which are on RUclips by the way. R.I.P Rik Mayall..
It's hard to watch this Rik Mayall abuse. He's a national treasure here in the UK. 😂
He is a comedy genius here in the UK. Especially is you grew up on the young ones and bottom. Ade Edmonson landed himself a small role on the last Jedi because Rian Johnson was such a huge fan of bottom.
You can't beat rik mayall ..... so glad I got to see him live twice
Not just the UK, but Australia too!
@@deetee8247 Are was in the last jedi!?!
+THECOLLECTOR75 Were either of those the Bottom Live shows?
For god's sake James watch ALL of Blackadder NOW.
Rowan Atkinson's best comedic performance in my opinion.
or just at least the ones with flash heart in it
Iv’e got a tongue like an electric eel and she likes the taste of a man’s tonsils! Woof!
Woof Woof
IiIIiIiiIit's Me! Hooray!
Pheobe Cates is the definition of "cute as a button"
You should do some more research on Rik Mayall James. The guy is a comedy legend, and rightfully so.
I second this.
I third this.
I fourth this.
I fifth this
I fifth this. I adore Rik Mayall and his career and was so sad when he...well...dropped dead.
When Rick died it hit the UK seriously hard, he was well loved and a genius of comedy. James you need to spend an evening watching bottom it's insane, brilliant & will explain why he was the man chosen for this role. I'm willing to bet that rotten tomato score is down to the love of the nation and the sadness we all shared upon his passing. Justin bringing up "Man down" was a nice surprise, it's one of the funniest shows i've ever seen - It even has a sneaky scene with Mark Hamill in it!
James I really hope you see more of Rick's work and UK comedy in general - It can't be beat 👌
It'll be too complex yet "stupid" to him.
He will just shit on it because he didn't watch it as a child and form his opinion back then to parrot like a grown baby now.
@@booty2k I can see him quite liking the young ones. Bottom, not so much.
I miss the Rik ☹️
Rik Mayall was a genius. Every scene he’s in he’s the star. Being Welsh born in 1990 Bottom was one of the things I grew up on. I miss him terribly
@@dannydorko7075 I prefer Bottom over the Young Ones..
Rik Mayall was incredible, and literally the only reason to see this film. He is sadly missed :(
But how can Rik be dead when we still have his works!
@@rossallan3585 and punks and skins and rastas will all gather round....
I’m with Justin on this one, one of my favorites as a kid.
Rik Mayall was also the face for Nintendo UK adverts in the early 90s. Like the others here say, comedy legend.
Those Nintendo adverts showed what an incredible comedian and actor he was 👌
Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson made a movie called "Guest House Paradiso", which has the longest vomiting sequence in the history of cinema! 🤮

And Rick Mayall is a comedy legend in England.
I watch Bottom almost daily. Rik Mayall was a British comedy genius! RIP mate!
Bottom is one of my all time favourite comedy series!
Ah yes....and check out The Young Ones, and the almost forgotten 'Filthy Rich And Catflap'.... classic Rik, and a healthy dose of Ade Edmondson too... Pure anarchic brilliance :-)
All over the UK 👍
Rik in Blackadder is class. Love from Wales 🏴
James: "I like British comedy"
Also James: Has apparently never seen Blackadder or The Young Ones.
He might mean more Peep Show or Mighty Boosh era
@@Jason-eo1rh He said he likes Monty Python.
Well, even with his admiration for British comedy, I don’t think he’s gonna like Sony Animation’s Peter Rabbit because the Aardman movies like Flushed Away and Chicken Run are beyond superior!
I can’t take anyone talking about this movie who doesn’t know who Rik Mayall is seriously
Its a terrible movie.
The RT Honorable Alan B'stard!
Oh i loved Rik Mayall, Young ones and Bottom were two of my fav series and he was great in Blackadder to
Lol yea
I still watch Bottom! Criminally under appreciated.
I think The Young Ones is better than Monty Python.
Flashheart was a riot. RIP Rik.
Every year, without hesitation, I watch the episode 'Holy' in December. Terrys All Gold, Frankenstein and Grr!
RIP Rik Mayall. One of my fave comedians. His "Young Ones" and "Bottom" co-star Ade Edmondson was in Star Wars :The Last Jedi.
I noticed that on Kylo's stardestroyers bridge
Is that supposed to mean anything?
To a Brit, to see Ade Edmondson in The Last Jedi was crazy!
Duck and cover James you inadvertently just picked a fight with the whole United Kingdom. Rik Mayall is very popular chap and was/is seen as a national treasure here. Keep the Rental Reviews coming, peace and love to the whole team.
I hate the term ‘national treasure’. It’s so overused. Can’t we just say that he was very popular in the UK?.
@@brwhizz3060 not this time. This time we're actually talking about a national treasure.
Rik was an absolute LEGEND! i even enjoyed Wham Bam Strawberry Jam..bonus points if anyone gets that reference ;)
@@brwhizz3060 if they were using it for someone undeserving then yes...but Rik was regarded as such long before its over use.
For anyone unfamiliar with Rik Mayall he's British comedy royalty and much missed. Drop Dead Fred was a weird blip in his career. Watch Bottom, The Young One's, Filthy Rich and Catflap or The New Statesman instead.
Was he also in Mister Disaster? Or was that a different guy?
This wasn’t a blip, he played an awesome part in this film.
@@steventotsrusselldj. It was a blip in that this was his only involvement with a major Hollywood studio.
I guess not 'Guest House Patasido'?
Alan b’stard 🤣
Rik Mayall was awesome, RIP
Drop Dead Fred is definitely one of my all-time favorites from when I was a kid. I was always a fan of the imaginary friend stuff back then with things like the Beetlejuice cartoon and Calvin & Hobbes, with Fred reminding me a lot more of the former. I was so excited that it was done here because I thought everyone had forgotten about it.
Im from uk. And believe me. Rik mayall was one of the funniest guys in uk(a legend). You need to watch young ones, bottom etc..but, your from u.s..so i understand. Never heard anyone say rik mayall was bad.. EVER!!
"Merlin the return" was i good way to torture someone by tying them to a chair and making them watch it! not his fault but its the straightest role i saw him play...
3:41, James does not know Rick Mayall, at all?! I'm shocked!
How long have you watched his "content"? Because you shouldn't be.
He knows very little.
He is pretty ignorant towards British comedy
Rik Mayall in The Young Ones is my favorite of his performances. Such a time capsule.
Drop Dead Fred was my favorite movie as a kid.
Same. I still like it
Poor kid
Justin: Here’s an obscure movie I loved as a kid.
James: Yawn. You should be into better stuff like Charlie Chan meets son of the invisible man.
Justin: 😥
I wish he had promoted Charlie Chan, he promoted Abbott and Costello. Not really a fan of A&C since their dynamic was kind of mean-spirited with Bud bullying poor man-child Lou ( yes I know, characters, not really how they were...still, not my cup of tea...and yet somehow I love The Three Stooges...I guess they are so cartoonish that other considerations don't apply.)
I mean you can make anyone look bad if you just editorialize what they said.
Rik Mayall is comedy royalty. I love that you can watch this as a comedy or psychological horror
Man I never hear anyone talking about this movie. Definitely remember it from my childhood.
Except for the Nostalgia Critic, lol.
The podcast How Did This Get Made did a whole episode about it definitely worth checking out
@@rufust.firefly6744 cheers! Will check it out
Same, it's one of my all time favourites.
@@johnnyd3158 No idea who that is but I'll check out the video
I was a huge Rik Mayall fan, him and his partner Ade Edmonson made me laugh all through the 80’s and 90’s with Bottom, Filthy Rich and Catflap and of course The Young Ones. I still can’t believe Rik is actually dead, it was years ago and still doesn’t feel real. DDF wasn’t Mayall’s best work and it seems to get a lot of hate nowadays but it was still a very good film, I watch it now and again to this day.
Only celebrity death that really hit me and broke me. Felt like i lost a grandmother (a foul mouthed, hilarious grandmother)
You for got The Dangerous Brothers
@Marcel de Bruijn who could forget sir Adrian Dangerous 🤣
@Christopher Williams I know, he had a bit of a bad time really, it was the quad bike accident that killed him really, yes he lived another ten years but he was never the same after.
Rik Mayalls death was hard to take. I cried for days!
James is really pissing all over justin's childhood here lol
He's picking really weird stuff to bitch about. I could follow the movie as a kid, how can he not follow it as an adult?
@@Samtallica i like james, but pleeeeennnnty of times over the last like 10 years, ive thought "how'd you come to that conclusion?" or something to that effect

Bottom and the Young Ones, were too much fun back then
The Young Ones (and the Comedy Strip Presents) changed the comedy landscape in the UK in the early 80s. Just like Monty Python did before them, and then The Goons before that. Rick Mayall was at the heart of that change. "Fairly well know in the UK" - C'mon guys. He was a legend. RIP Rick Mayall.
Bottom and father ted are the best british comedy series ever.

Hah I thought that too. Especially since he mentioned Blackadder briefly in a previous video, I thought he'd be well versed in UK comedy..
Rik Mayall was something of a national treasure in England ( and subsequently, across the pond here in Ireland ). Maybe a bit of a niche national treasure, but he was beloved in comedy circles for his various comedy roles on telly.
That being said, drop dead Fred was not his finest work 🤣
Mayall played Peeves the Poltergeist in the Harry Potter movie, but his parts were completely cut out, allegedly because he kept making the students laugh so hard. The footage he filmed has never been released
Oh geez I need to look that up

Yea that movie is awesome!!! Good tip!

Wow, worlds collide. I grew up on both sides of the pond and James just doesn’t know Rick Mayall is a god.
Literally a GOD
Yea I grew up in the states & I was introduced to Rick on the Young Ones & loved it. The more videos I see with James the more he really isn't up on any pop culture.
Am I the only one who felt like james was a little harsh on this movie.
Realy? I though he was actualy holding back and being nice because didn't wanna hurt Justin feelings.
No, this movie stinks
Out of all my friends, only those whose parents got divorced loved this movie.
James explained every point and if some butthurt fanboys can't escape their bubble nostalgia of this film or a dead comedian to see what he's talking about, then hey, your loss.
@@excessmaterial Kinda like the butthurt fanboys who say that the new AVGN episodes are terrible. Your loss, you ungrateful jerks!

R.I.P Rik Mayall you are a comedy legend.

Sounds like James needs to sit down with some Rik Mayall and learn about his brilliance.
I remember when my mental institution showed this to my classmates to make us sympathize with a fellow classmate who thought she was married to anubis. Why school? Why....?
Did anyone ever ask why she thought that?

Rik Mayall was huge in Britain! He was excellent in the series "Bottom" and "The Young Ones".
I was 13 when DDF was released so I was able to appreciate both the child- & adult-oriented jokes. Ten year old me _may_ have gotten the "Cobwebs!" joke but thirteen year old me _certainly_ did.
OMFG, the clips at the end with the two movies mixed was classic! I expected the one you teased at the beginning, but didn't expect the others!
I remember being very indifferent towards this film when I was young, I loved Bottom, practically my favourite sitcom of all time. So seeing Rik Mayall in Drop Dead Fred was like seeing him neutered, he simply wasn't allowed to perform at his best.
I know what you mean. Having Rik play such a PG character really doesn't work. I would've loved to have seen a more "adult" version of this movie, it could've been hilarious
