I love when Lloyd Bridges shouts "It's comin' right at us!" And jumps out of the window of the control tower. Everyone just looks at him then goes back to business.

What made Airplane so good was that it starred serious actors who never did comedy before. Leslie Neilson, Lloyd Bridges, and Peter Graves.
Even the guy in the taxi; who was probably the last person anyone would guess to do a comedy.
Airplane, Top Secret and The naked Gun represent the golden age of the parody comedies.

Comedy movies are so bland now a days I prey for a resurgence of REAL spoof movies
You can't make spoof films like this any more. Not because the culture's changed or because they're not considered appropriate, but because when they originally happened, they were a completely new an unexpected form of comedy. Trying to recreate that experience would be just rehashing old jokes. They wouldn't be as funny any more, even if they got equal talent in charge. You can't recreate that experience any more than you could recreate the original sensation of Star Wars.

I love how dark the music gets when he says that. The camera zooms in on his face..and it gets all dark and forbidding lol
I've used that "No... That's just what they'll be expecting Us to do..." line so many times, it's the one joke i allow myself to steal from someone else. sadly people always think I'm serious so it's never funny to anyone except me.
It is a hard movie to talk about since every scene is gold.
Saw it in a packed theater when I was a kid, I've never heard an audience roar like that for a movie. Also, some guy in the row ahead of me was laughing so hard he slid out of his seat onto the floor.
One of the greatest satires of all time. This is one of the best comedies ever made in my opinion.

The funniest freak out is when the stewardess says there's no more coffee, and a full riot ensues.
Love how they say in this video that the movie is a definite "R" when it's actually only rated PG.
Cinema in the 70's through the mid-80's was a crazy time.
@Ron 3 No one is saying violence is okay and tits are bad. What are you talking about? Airplane had tits and was PG, so obviously it wasn't a huge deal.

There is gore and violence on REGULAR TV equal to anything in a Rated R film back then ( or even now really ) , but even seeing a nipple causes a huge backlash. It is nonsensical and backwards for any thinking society. It is puritanical.
@@adgato75 PG-13 wasn't till' 1984 after a scene in PG-rated Gremlins where Billy Pelzer's mom Lynn puts one of the titular gremlins into a microwave and explodes, and the also PG-rated Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which not only had every single scene with Willie Scott screaming but also the scene that caused PG-13 rating to be created, where Mola Ram rips the man's heart off!

My favorite moments are when the old lady says, “I speak Jive”, and the propeller airplane noise in the obvious jet they are flying in.

The old lady who translated the jive was played by Barbara Billingsly. She played the mom on Leave it to Beaver. Makes the joke even funnier that it was Beav's mom!

It just occurred to me that both Wally and the Beav were in a segment of Kentucy Fried Movie which is the movie the Zuckers made prior to Airplane. I guess LitB is a running joke to them.

I literally watched Airplane! just last night. I was showing it to coworkers who had never seen it before. They howled through the whole thing. Seeing this video up today is spectacular timing.
How can you forget The Zucker Brothers other movie that they did with Val Kilmer called “Top Secret”. Soooo underrated. Val even does his own singing in it.
I'm happy you mentioned Zero Hour, not enough people know that 'Airplane!' is actually a line for line remake with some additions for comedy.
A lot of people miss the Prop airplane sound on exterior shots was done on purpose.
The zuckers actually bought the rights to zero hour so they could use the dialogue.
Budget was 3.5 million, it made 130 million. I guess you could say this movie took off.

The Kentucky Fried Movie from 1977 was made by Jim Abrams and the Zucker Brothers before they made Airplane! and it's a pretty out there comedy as well so these guys definitely knew what they where doing when they did Airplane!

But when they wrote it, they thought it was waaaay too long (like the Kung Fu parody) so they didn't make it.

@@AndyKusanagi86 The problem with spoofs today is that they don't stick to one idea and run with it. Instead, they try to spoof everything in the movie. They spoof hollywood, celebrities, society and anything else that the writers can think of and it falls flat.

We now got Airplane Mode, a spoof of a spoof starring that one moron who laughed at a dead corpse on-screen.

Edit: I remember seeing Airplane on TV once and the only part they cut out was the shit hitting the fan. Everything else was uncensored.
I actually just watched this film couple days ago and laughed in tears. I saw it as a kid and just how many jokes went over my head then. Totally has lots of rewatch value.
It is confirmed that Lloyd Bridges is the father of Jeff Bridges (as well as Beau Bridges too).
Unfortunately, after this, Hot Shots, and Weekend Warriors, I have a hard time watching him as that ol' war daggit, Commander Cain in Battlestar Galactica: The Living Legend.
I've seen Zero Hour and it was hilarious. My brain automatically filled in the Airplane! jokes while I watched.

I always loved Ruthless People. Not at all in the same vein of their other work but a really funny, well acted 80s comedy. If you like Beverly Hills Cops or Stripes or that kind of thing, it’s well worth the watch. Judge Reinhold and Bill Pullman steal the show

Hard to believe since there's swearing, brief nudity, sexual inuendos, violence, smoking/drug references, racism, and such.
Seems like we, as a society, have discovered how to be offended and forgot how to laugh.

I love that bit when he is talking to someone who is seen on a monitor screen and then opens the door and it turned out he was talking to him through a window.
Leslie Nielsen appeared in my favourite series of all time COLUMBO, he is dead serious in there and you can really see what a great actor he is besides beeing funny as hell.
For what its worth, Airplane and Airplane 2 are both currently on Amazon Prime!
They are also currently on my DVD.
Kentucky Fried Movie was the blueprint for this movie.

I remember hearing an interview with Leslie Nielsen and he said he might have a career in comedy when he realized he could say the most outrageous gobbledygook with a straight face at parties and people would just accept it as truth, then they realized what he did and just doubled over laughing their ass off.
This made my day. My favorite comedy of all times!!!!!!

Good old Leslie Nielsen. My favorite line he delivers is from an episode of Police Squad where he's undercover as a locksmith and is discovered having broken into the suspect's office who asks him, "who are you? how did you get in here?" and he says in the way he does "I'm a locksmith. ...and... I'm a locksmith." Pure gold.

I saw this at the theater here the Summer it was released, so 12 years old I guess. This is still one of my parents' favorite comedies, right up there with Blazing Saddles.
40 years later and Airplane is STILL one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I'm 22 and I showed a guy at work who's 3 years younger than me some of these clips and it was awesome watching his reactions
Making these movies must have been a blast. Just adjusting the poo's density and texture to hit/stick to the fan with a perfect throw must have been an adventure. I would have been rolling on the floor laughing.

They're spoof movies. Not sure why they're being called slapstick. Obviously they contain slapstick, but that's not the genre. Most of the best moments are dialogue or sight gags, not physical comedy.

Look, I know Rental Reviews doesn't get "a lot of views." But guys, it's pure joy. Your love of movies is infectious and I think this series just needs to find its audience. It must be a logistics nightmare to coordinate schedules, but it's pennies to make. Maybe instead of closing the store, turn it into a monthly - so it's not so demanding. At any rate, I love the show, and I'd hate to see it go. Love the content James, and I'm sure no matter what you do, I'll enjoy what you have planned for the future.

What's your point? They still pushed boundaries, for a comedy movie. It was PG because 90% of the dirty jokes are innuendo.
@@jamstonjulian6947 My point is that it DIDN'T really push any boundaries. Innuendo wasn't pushing any boundaries. Check out some the R-rated comedies of the time. They were full of sex jokes. These guys don't know what they are talking about.
