Jim Varney was probably the hardest working comedic actor in the 80's and 90's. He did everything from commercials, TV shows, and movies. The Rental Reviews gang dives into one of many Ernest Movies. See what happens when Ernest Goes To Jail!

Jim Varney was a heavy smoker (a pack a day or more), but never allowed himself to be filmed or photographed smoking because of how popular he was with kids. He was a class act and brought a lot of joy to people's lives.
Yeah right, go watch Neverland.
Jim varney was fucking awesome
@@SethMcFartlane That documentary is complete horseshit lmfao
Heh, Paul Reubens is the same way.
I feel like he's on par with Robin Williams for acting (esp the character actor thing) but sadly, not remembered by as many people as Robin. Both were amazing actors, I just feel like Jim didn't get the recognition he deserved.
Ernest Rides Again was the last one released in theaters. In an interview, Jim Varney said that playing Ernest killed his acting career because nobody could see him playing another character besides Ernest. His portrayal of Jed Clampette in the Beverly hillbillies was also amazing. R.I.P. Mr. Varney.
He was also in Three Ninjas Highnoon At Megamountain, he basically was Felix Nash in that movie as well (I can't remember the name of his character in that movie). Of course, nobody talks about that movie.
Dr. Otto
I mean... it only killed it in the sense that he didn't get many other roles. But most actors don't get leading roles in 9 films in 11 years. Or their own TV series. And almost never based on a character created for advertising.
Makes me wonder if enjoyed being typecast as Ernest
@@KRS2000 Are you kidding? Three Ninjas Highnoon...? ("High Noon" is the correct spelling, btw). "Nobody talk about that movie"???? Of course nobody mentions that. I've never heard of it but then again, I don't pay attention to films aimed at 5 year olds. There's nothing WORTH mentioning about this formulaic Hollywood mess, except that it's just another example of the crap that comes out of Hollywood!
Jim Varney lived on Kent Island. Used to see him in Kmart all the time. He was quick to strike up a conversation all the time. Good man. Funny as hell
Justin Eddy I completely agree. And awesome name, by the way!
Justin Eddy we still have Kmart in Australia
Done Deal Wow man

I think they’re finally shutting the one in pike creek down. Shout out DE 19711
Liar
You guys forgot that he was Slinkydog from Toy Story 1 & 2!
yup, he was Slink and he was Cookie in Atlantis.
Blake Clark for the save.
No, Disney's "Atlantis" was his last role.
@Crowtex Gaming Atlantis came after TS 2, so not quite, almost but not quite.
Ok you can be red this time!
I grew up in Ky. I met him when I was 9. At a random gas station. He went straight into character and hung with me for an hour. Class act
*Tear of happiness*
I believe that he would have done that for some reason. Cool you got to meet the legend.
That would have made my decade to meet him in person in a normal setting. Ernest and I spent many hours together in my childhood. Awesome person. Saddens me to the core to know he's gone.
Man that's crazy.
That's super awesome!
Anybody else think Jim Varney and Mike Rowe are long lost brothers?? The resemblence is uncanny for some reason, hell they even dress alike lol
Aaron Bays I know. I mistaken Jim Varney for Mike Rowe when I was younger
No, but have you seen John Cena lately? He looks like Jim Varney
@@jeremiahhuntley4017 What spooks me the hell out is not just how they resemble when wearing baseball caps and their chins...
Varney's character was Felix Nash. Cena's full name is John Anthony Felix Cena. *X Files theme song*
These guys can't even talk about this movie without cracking up. That's how you know you gotta see it.
Jacob Harvell Or they’re stoned.
@@Yisrael_Teshuvah It helps
This is great!!!
Jim Varney had a big impact on how my sense of humor formed. I remember I would annoy the hell out of my mom by getting Ernest movies from Blockbuster every time we went.
Jim Varney was so important to my childhood. RIP Earnest
R.I.P. Jim varney you still are missed. "Know what I mean vern".
He's doing great up here in heaven
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ernest goes to camp. Ernest scared stupid. Ernest saves Christmas. All classics.
I only really liked Camp out of his movies, but I saw all three of those in the theater.
Then they started going straight to video, I remember there was one, where he went to the NBA ....another one where he rode around on a freaking cannon half the movie.
His TV show was hilarious though, much better than the movies IMO.
The pen seen in the courtroom he's one of my favorite comedy scenes in any movie ever. Thanks guys this is fun
I liked how you guys talked over each other sometimes. It made the conversation look more like a real conversation.
Poor guy on the left kept getting talked over by middle guy a couple of times.
It’s been nineteen years since Jim Varney passed away at the age of fifty. Still missed amongst those of us who grew up watching his films.
The ink scene in that move nearly gave me a heart attack. I miss Jim Varney, i wonder if he would have still been doing the Ernest movies if he were still alive.
Jim Varney was my idol growing up...Sure miss him! RIP
I realized recently we'll never have an Ernest and Mr. Bean crossover movie. :(
Me too Ernest scared stupid is my favorite movie all of time
I grew up on all the ernest movies
They had like a big talking earnest doll with one of those pull cords, I had one of those.
@@CrysResan me too
RIP Jim Varney. These movies were something else.
He truely has was Ernest!
And we will always love him for that!!
he was Ernest P. Worrell... ELECTROMAN!!!

Ernest: the true god of thunder! ⛈
I didn’t even know he passed
You said it. they defied genre, rating, they transcended taste. Just pure fun. Basically what the late 80s early 90s was all about.
Ernest Goes to Africa. It's so bad it's good.
You just brought up a repressed memory of seeing that on VHS as a kid... So weird that one was made.
I absolutely agree
Ernest holds a special place in my heart forever.
To answer whether Ernest really died at the end or not, there's actually a deleted epilogue after the bomb scene, which shows Ernest working behind a computer at his desk in the bank. The security guards are demonstrating a new computer security system to the bank manager, and right after Bobby "arms the computer", Ernest gets electrocuted at the mere press of a key. For a second he thinks he's cured of magnetism until some file cabinets start chasing him again, then the credits roll. This is the version I taped off network TV and watched over and over again long ago, so watching it now without that scene gives me a major case of Mandela effect. There are many other deleted scenes that can be found on YT, including Ernest (as Nash) getting a conjugal visit!
I have that version as well, It was one of the few times that network TV actually showed more than the video! I wish they had made a special edition DVD of this movie with the added footage.
oh yeah, I remember that scene!
I can't imagine Jim Varney being intimate with a woman in a film.
RIP Jim Varney! Ernest Goes to Camp is one of my fav movies.
YUP! The all time classic!
Jim Varney was spectacular.
The scene where he’s hiking with the kids and recanting his experience in Vietnam is so perfect lol
"eeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwooooooooooooooo" :o
Same. I love that movie.
The Ernest films are classics that need to be preserved, such a fond part of my childhood and most of them still entertain/amuse me to this day.
Another reason I love Nerd over Critic. Nerd sees the Ernest movies for what they were, real life cartoons that aren't meant to be taking seriously but still have a good message behind Ernest being a stand up goofy guy.
Nerd one hundred percent over critic
I remember crying laughing when he was on the jury stand eating the pen
He ate the paper after he gnawed on the pen. I performed the act at the dinner table to scores of laughter.
Suprised you guys didnt mention the scene where he tries to escape dressed as auntie nelda 😂
her car is overheating as we speak
oh yeah! Good call, that was such a great scene!
derek221122 lol that's right! 😅😅
I still don't know how he snuck a sex change joke in there.
Haha jesus I forgot about that! So funny.
Varney also voiced Slinky in Toy Story 1 and 2....
You know, I never realized that but the resemblance is obvious since you said it.
that is correct, sir. unfortunately he died before toy story 3 was even a thing. but yeah, i enjoyed him as slinky as well.
That's where I knew him from, but haven't seen an Ernest movie before
@@grimTales1 you need to watch Ernest scared stupid and Ernest goes to camp.
I never realized that.
Ernest goes to camp review please? Was my favorite movie growing up.
@osp80 nope, self taught somehow.
Yes please do earnest goes to camp review!!!or I’ll eat eggs eronious.
I saw it in the theater and it's always been one of my favorites too. His movies got progressively shittier but Goes to Camp and his TV show were great.
Same here.

My favorite Ernest movie will always be Ernest Goes to Camp.
Hands down the best Ernest film of all time. RIP Jim Varney; those movies were a big part of my childhood.
Hey guys, I would love to watch you talk about the Tremor movie series. Used to watch a lot of the original when I was a kid! Keep up the great work!
Seems like a perfect fit for this series
They could talk about the reboot and series as well. Alot to talk about :)
Tremors 2 is the best!
I'm pretty sure he's talked about it before at least a little. I could be wrong. It might've been on a top ten list or something of that nature
A man of culutre I see
Hey Vern,
I can't even tell you how much I loved watching all of Jim Varney's movies growing up, sooooo much enjoyment out of them all. Loved that guy and so glad you guys did this!
Thanks Vern

Ah. Someone from my state. That’s not something you see everyday.
The gunfight standoff scene between Nash and Security Guard Bobbie (The thin, old guy) gave me goosebumps as a kid. Like Bobbie was a legit bad ass to me in that moment. “Freeze punk...make your play!”
Adam Bennett
I used to repeat “Bobby would ya please?!?” And “Freeze punk, make your play...” as a kid.
Me and a friend watched this one too much.
I love Bobby, and Rimshot!
Did they even mention Rimshot? 😀
He also won that standoff. Damn dogs knocked him over though
I recommend the Simpsons Episode "Bart Carny", in which Jim Varney voices Cooder.
"Can you do that again?"
"Not for a little while..."
I know it wasnt him but I loved the part with the barf bucket

i htink you have tony and justin mixed up
Thank you so much for doing this one. The Ernest series of movies was my child hood!!! Laughed along with you guys. 😂🤣
I remember seeing Varney, as Ernest, appearing in commercials when I was a kid; notably the commercials he did for Braum's and some local commercials for a TV station in Houston (these were in the early-to-mid 80s). It was so cool to see him making movies with his Ernest character after that. Kinda like having a local band you like suddenly make it big.
Jim Varney is a astonishing comedian
I forgot how insane this movie was. Then again, all of Jim Varney's movies were insane.
RIP Jim, thnx for helping to make a great childood!
Love Cinemassacre updates. Consistency has been highly appreciated by us all. Keep up the great vids!!!
Jim Varney was such a highly underrated actor. I have thoroughly enjoyed most of the Ernest movies. My personal favorite is when he goes back to high school.
How is he highly underrated??
I’m sick of people falsely using “underrated.” Give me a reason why/how he’s underrated
In my childhood headcannon, Ernest and Pee Wee are Neighbors(they just don't hang around the same people in town).....

Jim Varney's a Legend and you really should do a Heavyweights review!!!

I loved Ernest Scared Stupid! Its the best one.
I agree, he just did so many impressions in it and who didn't want a treehouse like that!
Ernest and Halloween was a killer combination! He really got to show off his creepy side in that.
Loved the old lady impression lol
Really goood!
That was the best..The curse..made his bloodline get dummer and dummer and dummer Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! right by the school window.
This has been one of my all time favorite movies for many, many years now. It's super over the top in every way that makes it amazing. This and Earnest Scared Stupid are two of the most hilarious movies I've ever seen!
I knew someone who was neighbors with Jim Varney and he was apparently just the best, nicest, most kind man on the planet.
I love Jim Varney. Humble guy and a good soul. R.I.P.
"I wanna talk to Samson!!"
RIP JIM you made my childhood amazing. My kids have seen his comedic genius and they loved it as much as I did as a child, time doesnt matter,he was that good!

Ernest didn't died, he went to a higher level of consciousness.
Ernest didn't die, he was murdered.
Ernest goes to Heaven.
He went into another dimension.
He became Philemon’s roommate.
He became the action figure we all wanted as a kid.
I remember going to see "Earnest Goes To Camp" in the theaters as a kid and it was AWESOME!!! Im glad to see people acknowledge his talent. RIP Jim Varney
During the OJ Simpson trial, the jury visited the crime scene.
...so there is a real life precedent of such a thing happening.
Also they visited Michael Peterson staircase, and i'm sure a ton of other trials have as well.
maybe they got the idea from Ernest...
hell, yeah. Happens all the time (a jury + judge & court reporter & attys visit the crime scene for some reason where it can't be duplicated in a courtroom).
Also in the Pauly Shore movie Jury Duty
This is such a classic movie, thank you for covering it.
Please don't let it end this way; Rental Reviews are excellent and hilarious, and I love watching them~!
Seeing James being unable to stop laughing over remembering this movie is the most wholesome thing I have seen.
Ernest Rides Again is the "The Last Crusade" of the franchise. Masterpiece
'"If you're waiting on me you're falling behind"
There's even a sequence where Ernest is playing Indiana Jones, and says that a bicycle seat he finds is... Cleopatra's Crystal Skull!
You guys should review the Beverly Hillbillies movie, one of Jim Varney's non Ernest roles.
Lets give 'em a Californy howdy!
That movie is underrated and way better than it has any right to be.
@@TheWinstonSlip truth here
It’s one of the absolute best Hollywood TV adaptations, right up there with the Addams Family films.
Jim Varney may be dead, but Ernest lives on
I never noticed this before but looking at the Nash character, Jim Varney could have made a good Joker.
Edit: Whoa!! I forgot Randall Tex Cobb was in this!
Joker?? Hells yeah!! Never thought of that, but yeah.
Whenever my dad doesn't understand me, he'll say, "What'cha mean, Vern?" almost constantly. Now I know where my dad got his sense of humor. Another awesome rental review.
Shit man Enest movies were so good! I grew up on these and Leslie Neilson movies
Are they really going down to 3 people for these movie reviews? Or is this just a one time thing? The more people the better, honestly. The audio or whatever has never been an issue before.
Bump
The big guy was probably outside grilling steaks for them all to eat after the review.
I would like to have seen Ernest goes to Australia with him and Crocodile Dundee in a movie.
sadly will never happen, he died some time ago, he voiced Cookie in Atlantis the Lost Empire as his last film.
I am seriously loving these Rental Reviews. Freaked was such a mind blowing episode since I didn't think anybody knew it existed. Keep it up!
That movie was, for me, one of those things that you see as a kid and you can't watch all of it for whatever reason, then it disappears till decades later. Love that movie after reuniting with it.
Ernest brings back all the memories of going to the video rental store and seeing all those Ernest movies available. As a kid though I usually only was allowed to make one rental and it would inevitably be an NES game.
I value everyone in this video but I think the 4 of you are better than just 3 however I still enjoyed the commentary and Love the series still.
Ernest Goes to Camp was the best. Where else do you see a aerial attack of turtles. You can't beat it.
although they appear cute and cuddly, never EVER do this to a family of badgers. aba daba daba daba daba daba daba!
Ironically the song that plays is BY the Turtles (Happy Together). I adore that film.
When he mentioned the camp one, I immediately remembered the turtles with parachutes biting people. I remember nothing else about that movie (just because it was a long time ago).

Aunt Nelda. One of his funniest characters
Ernest Goes Camping is my fav
Slinky Dog too, can't forget Slink
i liked it better when there was 4 of you guys in the video, it was a more realistic conversation, in real life people butt in and talk over each other but all the conversations were still really enjoyable to watch, it seemed like a bunch of friends sitting around discussing movies, this seems more polished and professional but not as fun, please go back to 4 of you in the reviews. thanks

I believe that in the credits Ernest is alive again post-explosion.
Ernest goes to camp is the best. Definitely nostalgic...

I watched the VHS as a kid probably 10+ times. RIP Jim.
As much as I love the Cinemassacre Ernest reviews, it’s a true crime they didn’t talk about Ernest Goes To Camp. John Vernon and Jim Varney made it a CLASSIC!
