- ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2014 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel 3.0L Engine is the first Diesel Engine available in a light duty pickup in over 20 years. The Italian 3.0L Diesel Engine is the same one powering the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. Unlike older Diesels, Ram says that this new 3.0L Fiat-sourced Diesel engine is a clean and modern design that not only get great fuel economy but is also clean and will not billow great clouds of black smoke. In another accurate, informative and fun TFLtruck review, here's everything you ever wanted to know about the new 1500 EcoDiesel 3.0L pickup truck Engine.

I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Mercedes 3.0 Turbo Diesel and absolutely loved it. It had plenty of power, smooth running, proven and none of the blue goo additive requirements. It is used in everything from medium duty cargo vans to suv's. It is reassuring to drive, you felt "safe" like it would get you there. It seemed to float up the road when you were driving. I did have one issue with it and that was, it was so reassuring to drive that perceived highway speeds were much lower than what you were actually going. As a result, I got 3 speeding tickets the first month. It was an amazing engine. It has documented history of 700,000+ mile life. Maybe that us why they aren't using it, fewer vehicle sales. And of course, Fiat owns Chrysler. I would need some proven history before buying an ECO Diesel. America is overly obsessed with suppressing the proliferation of diesel engines in my opinion, (in anticipation of the obvious and asinine comment, just like everyone, I have on of those too.)
Everything I needed to know? How about turbo boost pressure? Turbo type? Injectors? DEF? Maintenance? ETC? .... Very uninformative.
Great Video On New EcoDiesel 3.0L Engine going into 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck
I had a 94 GMC with the 6.5T diesel. Loved it.
I love Cummins engines have one in my Freightliner m2 it's an isl9. But I've been hearing the 5.0 is having some issues as well.
Supposedly it's the best diesel engine out. according to google but I've always wanted those something cool about a little diesel in a 1500 truck.
The engine in the 70’s was a 6 cylinder 110 horsepower Japanese engine. It was available for only a couple of years until they introduced the Cummins.
Curious to see how this engine compares to the R2.8 Cummins
I enjoyed the ecoDiesel in my 2015 Ram yes it was refined and quite. Surprisingly great acceleration. I enjoyed it a lot, until the engine failed at 51k miles leaving me - and my TV - stranded 250 miles from home; broken piston, engine seized. I was very meticulous on maintenance on this. Fortunately, Ram completely covered the repair under warranty, although it took a month to get approved and installed. I've never been reimbursed for the expenses involved in a rental during that time. Since then, I traded it in for a 2500 Ram, I just could no longer trust the engine.
My father loved his 2015 eco-diesel… Until he didn’t. He thought he had to tow too much and the exhaust got so hot it burned a hole through the exhaust and destroyed the transmission from the heat…
Total lemon after that incident. if he didn’t tow so much he’d probably still be driving it, it was a good truck
00:46 at least he gave us the bad news 1st 🤣🤣🤣🤣
also fiat improved on their diesel engine for the last 30 years so much that they are ridiculously durable. at the end of the day it's about performance and gas efficiency with rising fuel costs. these new diesels get superb performance, low horse power bit high torque.
here's something probably nobody wants to know ... bought a 2016 RAM EcoDiesel CrewCab 4x4 in the "Outdoorsman" flavor and at approx 700 miles went out to start it and it was dead / dead / dead ... after having it towed to my local / friendly dealer and some serious head scratching by the tech ... they determined it was a frayed wiring harness ... and of course it had to be ordered and of course ten days later I am still waiting for the parts ....
Could you put that engine in a 2005 ram 1500 v6. Not a truck person wanting to learn just wondering?
How about a bigger diesel option? Maybe 600 lb ft tq?
hemi is the way to go if you compare maintenance cost to an eco diesel
These are impressive sad it is not an inline engine though.
does it require DEF fluid or EGR?
I tow all the time 10-14k pounds. I love my ecodiesel. I have the 3.92 rear def. I removed the def and all the other crap but the engine failures are due to the def system which only trucks for USA have because all the trucks their shipping over seas don’t have that garbage. Even the large semi trucks are getting blown engines due to that system. Once my bumper to pump warranty went I believe around 55k miles I got rid of it.
Cummins has 4 different engines that would've been great in the Ram. The Cummins 5.0L v8 thats going in the Nissan Titan was planned for years to go into the Ram 1500 until Fiat bought out Chrysler, then it was scrapped. There is also a v6 version of that engine, although i'm not sure on the displacement. Then as posted below they have the ISF 2.8 and 3.8 which are both 4 cylinders. Ram made a big mistake.
i agree they shouldve used the smaller cummins, but they cant build these things fast enough. people are buying them sight unseen (i work at a dodge dealership) we had 3-5 guys come in from out of NY just to get them. this is a tried and true motor, been used for over 15 yrs in europe. just fyi!
M1tch454 thank god they didn't use the 5.0 it's horrible on fuel
Bajaheat what are you talking about? I own one and in Alabama (lots of hills) my Pro-4x gets 21.4 mpg on the hwy in a 7000 plus # truck. I would say that is pretty darned good. Regurgitate garbage to someone who thinks you may know what you are talking about.
put a CAT in it
But 5 liters is too big for a half ton. Customers have been noticing the ridiculous power numbers that pickup diesels have been putting up recently and asking: why not give us a much smaller diesel suited for the needs of the half ton pickup buyer? No half ton needs more than 250 horsepower, or 400 pounds of torque. Put something of appropriate size in it and it will return excellent fuel economy. That's what this engine is made to address.
Why did they never included an exhaust brake with it?
1980 gm had the 5.7 oldsmobile diesel
Hmmmmm I wonder if u could fenagle this under the hood of my 94 jeep xj.
why not use the 4.5L 4 cylinder?
Hi, they have good material. But they do not have subtitles in Spanish.
AFAIK this particular engine is not used in any european truck or van. It's used in some Maserati executive saloon's.
Here, in Europe we have a bunch of tiny motors. I wonder how long they will be able to last compared to the bigger brothers.
Let's see how the resale value is after the EPA is done with them.
? It will be normal? Just like every other diesel
Deleting your truck lowers the resale value btw
after I heard FIAT== I just gave up on buying one today.. I’m sticking with the v8
FIAT = Fix It Again Tony ! LOL
I wonder if I can swap a diesel that are in the Cherokee into a 2014 Durango. Swap the 3.6 out for the 3.0 diesel
I was going to say the same thing! Didn't the Ford Ranger have a diesel option in the mid-80's too?
is this turbo charged?
So has there been anymore reports of the engine failures? I’m going to be in the market for a used truck and am really interested in these.
You ever get one? If so how was it? I'm still looking at these. I really like them, but am hesitant.
@@matthewboone8406 sadly no. I never heard of Fiat ever fixed the problem. I ended up getting a ‘19 5.7 1500 Crew cab.
@@chmefla1 thanks! I heard they fixed a lot of the problems after the '16 models. Also heard it's really a truck by truck basis. Some of these seem to blow after 57k, some gor for 350k
will it fit in a old 2001 2500 and the $$
watch out for the cam gear slippage on some of these motors. there press fit not keyed. some engines are self destructing from it. its the gear that drives the high pressure pump. i dont understand why this is a problem when these motors are used in european trucks for over 10 yrs ? why wasnt it corrected ?
***** if an american company built it , this problem wouldnt be a problem becuase all gears are either pinned or keyed with a press fit.
+harry escarole Thats pretty sad considering thats not some wierd new problem that car makers havent dealt with before. The ford taurus SHO's with v8s had that issue back in the 90's Those who engineered this engine should have realized that could be a potential issue.
Usually when keyed they are not a press fit. The company I worked for built many electric applications, high output electric motors, up to 1000 HP drive motors, Cooling fans and Winches. whenever we used a keyed shaft it was never a press fit. No need to be. The only thing that we ever designed that was a press fit was for the ball bearings inner race to shaft.
3.9 cummins would have grabbed better traction. Vm is known for problems. The 2.8 in the liberty was ok till 100,000 mi then it started to come apart. If you are getting a 1500 better off with a hemi
Wrong the obs chevy in the 90’s had a 1500 6.5 liter diesel truck
I ❤️ Dodge Ram
Does this have a timing belt or chain?
Basically makes the sale for me.
chain
Belts went the way of pushrods about 2005, didn't they?
Chains can take the load, most modern overhead cams use chains for that.
and the vw rabbit (?) pick up not too sure on the years of it but i know it had a tdi
I have a 2.8L VM-Motori diesel in my 2005 Jeep Liberty and it is a great motor until it comes time to work on it. It requires so many high dollar specialty tools just to do regular maintenance such as replacing the timing belt. The engine doesn't even have timing marks and requires special tools to lock the cams and crank in place. Pain in the a**. Great power and mileage but almost not worth it. Even a new set of injectors cost over a grand. Lets hope the new 3.0L VM-Motori engine in the Ram trucks is a lot cheaper to maintain.
and this is different from say repairing a Cummins, PowerStroke, Duramax, Mercedes, VW/Audi/Porsche Diesels how???
I just replaced the injection pump on my old Cummins and it was a grand, sans the labor.
I noticed that if the word BOSCH is anywhere on your diesel, it's gonna be expensive.
Wait, you mean all six injectors were around a grand? That sounds like a deal to me.
Yeah, my 2011 JK 2.8 crd has a lot of problem too.
Great engine Larry……….
It makes less power than the twin turbo 3.5l in the F150. The diesel would be a hard sell if the cost is too high. Here in TX gas is 2.99 and diesel is 3.84. I'm leaning towards CNG for my next truck.
Told us nothing
Looking back, I personally think they should have made it a 3.6L Inline 6 cylinder turbo diesel, more natural mechanical torque, and smoother running. Adapt the body to the engine, not the other way around.
The only thing I wanted to know is the hp/tq output...
How many QUARTS of oil does the motor take?. Is it designed to last 350,000 miles?
Yes it is?
I had a 1994 GMC half ton with a diesel
They made 90's chevy 1500 with 6.5 turbo diesel still considered a half ton
Late 70s cheby had the famous 5.7 diesel boat anchor.
Should have resurrected and modernized the 4bt for this one.
Game over now
more fuel efficient then the Toyota Tacoma I4 and still one of the most powerful 1/2 ton pickups on the market. Clear winner! Best interior, best ride, best initial quality and back to back truck of the year for a reason. RAM is scheduled to outsell ford for the first time in 40 years in Canada.
I still have my 99 Ram
Its about time a v6 Diesel went into a full size truck, what took them so long with gas prices going up every year.
It's about time a small diesel went into a 1/2 ton truck! Ford, ARE YOU LISTENING?
Nicole Dubler It's been proposed and killed a few times in the big 3. I remember GM produced a 4.5(?)L V8 Duramax diesel back in the mid 2000's that was supposed to go into their minivans, light p/u's and even Trailblazers, but after weighing the cost and risk, they killed it along with hundreds of other great ideas (like the Northstar V12). Ford actually has a powerstroke V6 (4.5L), they've had one for a while actually, but it's in industrial or foreign use only.
Back in '96, a diesel was a $8K option so I got the 360 V8. Unless any truck company makes a diesel comparable in price to the V8, I'll stick with the V8. Now diesel fuel cost more than gas, I wouldn't see any savings in my lifetime.
Any long term updates?
Yes I would like to know how long this motor will last!?.... not the lemons though...
Junk engines, no parts, some trucks have been sitting at the dealerships for over a year due to no available parts.
Would like to find a review that is technical and not from someone on the payroll to include one that doesnt sound like a sales speach.
So, Oldsmobile caught hell for their 5.7 diesel, all problems were due to untrained personnel, it was a block specifically cast for a diesel build, from cast Iron, as were the heads, this thing is not, and no one bats an eye. Before anyone chimes in to start about how they were junk, my parents had one, I got it when it was 10 years old with over 50,000 miles on it, it survived my teens, the cars body didn't, we had it put in another car and continued to drive it, I've blown up quite a few engines, yet that one survived, many are still on the road today. I don't see one diesel engine today lasting like the ones from over 20 years ago.
7.3 powerstrokes are good
still no EPA Rating?
I hope this engine ends up in the Wrangler!
Im happy with my 24v cummins
at 1:03, "white smoke" ??? what's smokin whose smokin what, wait, what ? (uncleaned diesel emission particulates are black)
My uncle was an engineer for cummins on 5.9 for the dodge
Does he live in Columbus Indiana?
VW Motori 3.0L Made in Italy. This engine is extremely light duty. The block is 159 lbs and has a durability rating of 400 hours. 400 hours at 60 mph towing equates to 24,000 miles before its useful life is up.
+John Smith The diesel is running at least 140,000 before they throw craps LOL! High pressure pump drive gear on right bank comes lose and interference engine crashes1
Really? Where did you got such facts?
How hp?
Big question is... can I get it with a 6 speed manual transmission? If not, I'll go and get a 2015 Chevy Colorado.
Michael Swoveland sad I would buy one right now if it came manual
best of luck with Colorado. don't expect to actually get a diesel manual in that truck.
its a great motor
and how is it with cold start???
Coldest mine has been in is -15 deg's fahrenheit. Sat out over night, unplugged, in morning i hit remote start, 3-4 seconds later she cranked, fired right up and went to high idle. Not a problem in these mild temps ...
Isn't the VM eco diesel owned by gm
This did'nt age well.
they should of not charged extra for the diesel over the hemi option
No, It is a VM Motori. Same manufacturer that made my Liberty's engine.
Its available in the Grand Cherokee.
I have been here and done this back in 2007, I have a jeep wk grand Cherokee with 3.0L diesel from Mercedes. I now have a ecoboost 2014 fx4, now that's a motor! All this coming from me that had a Silverado lbz duramax stolen from me by the natives, it was replaced with ecoboost and iwill never look back.
www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2014/04/ford-f-150-recall-necessary-power-loss-issue.html
She's finally coming to the Wrangler
I wonder how it compare to the jeeps Mercedes diesel 3 L. I owned one in a Grnd Cherokee until I needed a truck. It was unbelievable in power and in 5 yrs I never had it in the shop. I always wanted them to put it in a pickup. Now they they do but.........its a Fiat?
No it's VM Motori engine
Как движок по качеству ?
shit
Most people like the sound of diesels!
please put this engine in the new wrangler!
interesting option but worldwide there are already tons of light truck diesels. I am in Brazil and have a 2010 ford ranger with a 3.0 4 cylinder international power stroke diesel. Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, chevy Volkswagen and Ssangyong (korean powered by mercedes) all have diesel trucks here. Since 2012 the Ford ranger comes with a sweet 3.2 5 cylinder diesel which is extremely smooth and powerful
I wish I could have picked up an old Toyota Hilux, but not in North America.
Listen: SsangYong IS NOT POWERED by MB. MB has agreement with SsangYong to provide older generation diesel engines to the south korean company, now owned by TATA. This agreement dated from days of the famous SsangYong Musso with the MB three point star in it.
Hey, even the brand new 2016 ssangyong diesels sold in brazil have a "powered by mercedes benz" sticker on back with the mercedes emblem and under the hood the 2.0 A 200 diesel has the mercedes emblem on the rocker cover... False advertising?
You're correct. Since Brazilian car industry doesn't have to met regulation on so tight like EPA in U.S. Ssang Yong ,like any other manufacturers, is quite able to advertise, equips, install older generation diesel engines in new model, like a 2016 you mentioned. Many others manufacturers had done the same in markets/ countries with less strict pollution regulation like Malaysia, Brazil and India. Since Ssang yong has this agreement with MB is really difficult to say if the mentioned engine is really a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine or a Mercedes-Benz licensed design with upgrades from the south korean manufacturer. Don't get me wrong: Ssang Yong build good stuff and they equips its products with reputable manufacturers component like MB, ZF and Borg-Wagner.
1996 gmc sierra 1500 with a 6.5L TD isnt that a light duty pickup?
Nope they didn't have them after the 70's. I think we know a little more about the 1/2 ton diesel segment than this guy does.
is that true some these 3.0L diesel have problems on Ram 1500?
yep. it's not a Cummins.
Thanks!
+Ric Bonillas Jr Yes!! It has overhead cam shafts, the sprocket that runs the cam shafts is only held on the cam shaft by friction, no bolts no splines just friction, they come lose after about 100,000 miles which allows the pistons to hit the valves destroying the engine, what total Dumb Ass designs cam shafts like that, apparently the people who build diesel engines for Dodge.
+John doe Sounds like an absolutely horrible design that is almost guaranteed to fail.
+John doe it's called a press fit, or an interference fit. But ya, its crap, should have a key way
the guy might have been thinking only in the RAM's
After years of being with cummins they should have tried to work something out. That duramax 3.0 will take it from dodge, shoot all they needed to do was stay with the inline 6 and it would have be fine
Why the complications of double overhead cams?! overhead cams are for 10000+ rpms, the chevy V8s rev to 9000 rpm with pushrods! pushrod engines can be more compact, lighter and easier to work on!
Put the I4 and 3.0 Ecodiesel in the Jeep Wrangler.
So who makes the engine?
VM Motori
Wow this hasn’t aged well…..
No it isn't. But I will still get one. My VM in my Liberty (Modded) pulls my 21 foot camper effortlessly.
DOHC!? Sweet!
I love it. Sucks that it's Italian, but it sure out-did GM and Ford (coming from a Chevy fan, who likes the Ram 2500HD w/ Cummins 6.7L). This is the direction trucks are moving toward: great MPG and great towing. While it's not too horsepower-y (that's not a word), it's still a great truck. Props to Ram for this one.
It's a Mercedes engine, which is German, not Italian.
@@TheAmericanUhateit's not, it's a fiat engine, it's Italian lol
@@TheAmericanUhateit’s not a Mercedes diesel 😂😂😂
so cummins doesnt make a small enough diesel my ass. what about the cummins ISF3.8 or ISF2.8?
Sorry I had to stop a bit more than a minute in cause I couldn't take it. First, I am a proud Ram owner...a gasser though. And I thought this truck was cool when it first came out. Then I got the chance to work on one a few weeks ago. And this is my take on it. Don't walk, run away from this engine. It is a nightmare to work on thanks to the engineers. They have made it even harder to work on in a garage. If you doubt me, look up how to change the water pump. Or even better, the turbo. The water pump sits right in front of the valley, and has a tube that connects inside the valley. You have to remove entirely too much shit just to swap out a water pump. And the turbo? Hope you have a 4 point lift to remove the friggen cab! That's not me not knowing how to do it, that's the book procedure. They have massive egr cooler failures, and the damn thing will coke itself to death in less than 100k miles. No, thank you. If I were Chrysler, I would throw this engine away and find a better one. Oh, I don't know, maybe a Cummins. I would rather see a 4bt in this thing. And what's more, even when these things are running correctly, they can't pull worth a shit. Your better off with a gasser. Chrysler, you need to do better. This engine is unadulterated shit, and you slapped it in a Ram anyways.
gm had half ton truck diesels in the 80s
They also had one in the 90's.
Yes they did, was this 350 gas engine wanna make it a diesel that was a POS? My cousin had one, Chevy bought the truck back!
@@sfbfriend in the 80s it wasnt a 350 diesel that was mainly offered in gm cars they had it as a option for trucks but most didnt sell but it was a flop the 80s light duty motors for trucks that were diesel were the 6.2 and the 6.5 turbo and naturally aspirated 6.5
Is it a 6-cyl?
Yes, but V6
hmm yea must of
they should have worked with cummings more and had them build a engine for them. The 4bt could have been a good option. These companies are getting to small with engine displacement. I know there trying to meet emissons but stressing an engine won't get you very far reliably. That's why eccoboost has a lot of problems.
What problems do ecoboost have? I've had 2 with no issues yet. The only issue I've known of is intake valve getting gummed due to no fuel cleaning them. That's a common direct injection issue. Can be solved using a catch can.
well my brother in law has had 2 a 13 and 14 . 13 with 1200 miles died and wouldnt not start dealer said it was a timing belt issue was fixed and 3000 miles it went in to limp mode dealer repaired again then he traded for a 14 . 2000 miles turbo failure was repaired by dealer he now has a 16 5.0l 4x4 no issues of yet and much happier. I hope you have good luck with yours this is what my brother inlaw has had happen to him.
1999 or so was the last year a 1/2 ton truck was offered with a diesel and that was the Gm 6.5L turbo diesel. Dodge D-50 in the late 1970s early 80s had a Mazda diesel that was badly under powered but still got great mileage.
He failed to mention that the ecodiesel is about 40lbs lighter than the 5.7L Hemi. Now all they need to do is screw the Cherokee and put the damn thing in the Wrangler!
+Ratkill9000 WRONG.... It's 50 pounds heavier than the Hemi..
507 for the Ecodiesel and 485 lbs for the Hemi. So I'm not that far off just was wrong on what I found for specs at the time I originally posted.
Payload is a big limitation of the RAM 1500 so a crew cab model has very little capacity if equipped with a diesel engine. Also diesel fuel weighs more than gasoline too.
Nissan will have a v8 Cummins in there new halfton
and depreciation of truck which will total vehicle in few years trying to fix that diesel
why reinvent the wheel, there are gobs of industrial 4 cylinders diesel engines worldwide why not use one?
Because of liberal emission standards.
