I hope everyone is having a great weekend. with the final 2023 Ecodiesel trucks being sold as new trucks I figured it was time to revisit the infamous 3l ecodiesel engine that truly shook up the 1500 truck segment.
the 3L ecodiesel came from the italian engine maker VM motori and made its debut in the 2011 jeep grand Cherokee.
eventually Chrysler would bring the second gen 3L Eco diesel over to north America and bring put in the ram 1500 trucks. at first this looked like a wonderful idea and the 3L ecodiesel engine was highly praised and won awards for its power, torque and fuel economy.
but eventually people caught on that this Eco diesel engine was not as reliable as people had hoped. the first issue was the constant emission reliated failures. Clogged DPF's were common and other emission related engine lights.
The first major issue was the cracked EGR coolers that were constantly failing and eventually ram had to release a Recall due to potential fire hazard.
The second major issues and the one that would worry me the most as a buyer or owner is the bottom end failures. the Second gen Eco diesel seemed to spit out rod bearings and this was due to the crankshaft actually flexing during heavy load.
to me this is a strong signal that this diesel engine is simply not built to withstand the duty cycles and work load of a pick up truck. the engine was built for the passenger vehicle market and it shows.
the last major issues was the EPA emission Scandal and emission recall. the engines were emitting too much NOX gases into the atmosphere and the EPA fined chrysler 300 million dollars. all truck had to be recalled and have software updates.
this software update resulted in lower fuel economy, less acceleration and lower engine power. leaving owners disjointed.
there are a number of other issues with this engine that keeps going. overall in my opinion these engines deserve the bad rep they get because they were not meant for the pick up truck application and were unreliable.

A lot of the problem with the modern diesels is they’re being made lighter duty so they’re cheaper, but they’re also making more power which shortens life. Then add in the high EGR flow adding loads of carbon and the life gets even shorter.
Old diesels were built much stronger, but also made less power so they lasted longer. This engine is making similar torque and higher horsepower than the old 5.9 cummins people are so fond of. But, this engine isn’t anywhere near as robust.

I have a 2nd GEN 2016, love the truck, 170,000 going solid, I do use heavy duty diesel oil (Rotella T6 5W40 ), these 2nd GENs needs to use the same oil as CUMMINS 6.7 use ,and not the original oil that was intended to used with them. So if you own a second gen use any diesel oil with the CK4 detergent spec. I do have a BANKS systems , inline tunner installed , Proved on a DYNO, I gained HP, torque and also my MPG went up by 3mpg, while staying emission compliance. The BANKS systems keeps the engine working cleaner with less regeneration. I do live in FLORIDA, so for me emissions are not need it, my next step will be deleting the truck and re tune, if you live in a emissions compliance state, I will recommend a banks deringer with the pedal monster combo. I forgot to mention my truck its level running 35 inch tires, daily driver, love the truck. I also run every 6000 miles a bottle of diesel extreme from the
hotshot secret products, I have noticed that the fuel systems works better since I start using it, the check engine light went away for the DPF and the engine sounds smoother. Im not affiliated with any of the brands I have mentioned, Im just putting

As an original owner of a 2014 ecodiesel with 290k, I can sympathize. Fortunately I've not had any bottom end issues and I told the dealer not to flash the 2017 emissions change, and I've had the GDE hot tune since about 120k. Also, short trips were never an issue.
I've been eyeing the hurricane straight six, but after 10 years with the ecodiesel, and pulling a 8,500lb 35 ft rv trailer to FL annually from Ontario, I suspect pumping premium fuel to slake the thirst of that twin turbo would be a major, and unwelcome, change.

I had one engine failure around 50k miles 2018 jeep grand cherokee. Had to wait 6 months after many of the replacement engines in 2023 were bad from factory. Got a remanufacture engine probably same bad crank but was not assembled correctly and failed 2 weeks later. Read some cranks allowed more flex if not forged correctly or poor metal. Not sure if true. Then waited another 3 months for current latest 2nd gen engine that is working fine, but hard to have long term faith if no one said how these are better or improved. Many people waiting for new injector recalls as well. Most of industry uses same injectors for diesels. No idea of any improvements were made to my replacement engine, I begged them to replace the bad 2nd gen with the latest 3rd generation. As mentioned the mandated reprogramming and transmission detunes killed mpg and gave a nasty 2 seconds acceleration lag without using sport mode compared to prior. I know replacement engine mounting points and computer program would be difficult but I would feel better. Rest of jeep has been rock solid. Zf transmission is smooth. Air suspension been reliable. Interior holding up well . I changed oil with amsoil signature and never abused it or towed. Gde tunes for many people get 27mpg plus and 700 plus miles on a tank of diesel. Amazing range. The 3rd generation or last 2019-2023 is built so much better and hardly any failures and more power. I would have more confidence in it. Thankfully it was covered within warranty but some people were out thousands. I learned from an expert that the vm motori ecodeisel engine was benchmarked off of Ford Lion 3.0 diesel I was told. Lot of bottom end failures and similar crank design. One lesson is only an inline 6 with a forged crank is the way to go. I came from gm 4.2 inline 6 envoy gmc with a stronger and more main bearings. That type of crank and well balance engine that would run for hundreds of thousand miles with proper care and had so much potential left in it. Wish gm kept it. Big fan of inline 6 gas or diesels. The new mazda or stelantis hurricane or bmw 3.0 Inline 6 gas uses premium gas but you can get better discounts with premium than diesel around me and was opposite for me in 2018-2019. Premium is often cheaper or same as diesel lately. When it was new in 2018. Diesel was similar to regular or mid grade gasoline back then when i shopped around.

I bought a used Jeep Grand Cherokee with the ecodiesel, and I had a pretty good 3 year run. It did have to go to the dealer for engine light, tied to emissions system, but it was repaired under extended warranty. Other than that downtime, and one scary incident where the computer didn’t like the lower grade Def fluid from O Riley’s, saying it would soon not restart…it performed well (gas mileage like you mentioned, towing tractor or snowmobile trailer with ease). I absolutely love my 2017 4x4 ecodiesel, which I bought brand new. I towed my travel trailer with ease, averaging 15-20mpg when towing. When I was commuting more on the highway the first couple of years, I averaged 28mpg, and 30mpg once I installed a hard cover for my truck bed. Even after I put a 2" level kit and 33" AT tires, the truck drove smooth and I my mpg averaged 27 on the highway as a result. It's offroading capabilities stock was impressive as well. I loved my truck, but once I stopped towing and commuting on the highway routinely, my exhaust filter started to fill with soot on occasion. I live in Los Angeles and now drive 5-15 minute short commutes, stop and go city traffic only, resulting in the exhaust filter sensor to routinely ping every 2-3weeks. Then I would have to drive on the highway for about 15 minutes at night to start the regen process, burning out the soot in the exhaust filter, problem solved. It wasn't a big deal but it was pretty annoying. I figured I would deal with it because I love the truck so much. Other than the exhaust filter filling with soot, I've had zero issues with the engine and it has almost 50k miles on it. Sadly, I decided to sell my ecodiesel. As much as I love my ecodiesel, it makes no sense to own one if you live in the city. The biggest appeal was the fuel economy factor, but when you have to drive the truck on the highway and burn more diesel to blow out the soot in the exhaust filter, it kind of defeats the purpose to own. Especially for city slickers like me. My experience just confirms that the ecodiesel was made to drive long distance and work, not drive in short commutes or traffic routinely. I hope this helps. I would still recommend this truck if you don't live in the city.

My 2016 Ecodiesel has over 155k miles . . . .and I love the fuel economy (especially coming from my Ford F150 with 5.4l engine) and power. However, there has been some rough patches along the way with the EGR cooler leaking (twice), cooling fluid pump and piping leak and of course, the EPA recall which decimated the performance, economy and safety of the vehicle. My dad is a retired CHP officer and couldn't believe the acceleration delay after the recall and the danger it created when pulling onto moving traffic! Fortunately, I found a third-party tune - Sofa King Tuned
(. . . can't get the Green Diesel Engineering option in California - another story!) which corrected all the EPA issues and brought the engine "back to life"! The 1500 Laramie is by far the most comfortable truck I've ever owned (and functional with the Rambox) with the capable and efficient Gen2 Ecodiesel. Hope to keep it to 300K before parting with it . . . as long as there are no more major issues! 2014 eco Diesel,74000 miles on it. Had DEF tank fail,EGR cooler done on recall. Truck was great when new. After the emissions update it has been a dog. Lost a lot of power and fuel mileage. Just got another recall today for the Lift pump. When it was new,the truck would get 33 mpg on the highway. All the miles are highway driving. I still like the truck, but the reliability issues have me looking at a gasoline truck next. Something I can work on!

I probably will be one of the few. And agree with most. If you got a good one you are lucky. I had a 2014 Ecodiesel for 6 years. Towed a 7k camper went to 7 states with it and ran it around our bi state area. It did break down 1 time cause of the crank tone wheel shattered. Also intake swerl values and thermostat went out.. But other then those few things it was only recalls and maintenance. Also a regiment of hot shots products. I did trade it in with 237k miles and all of its emissions in tact. Now i have a 18 2500 Cummins and it has already been in the shop more then the Ecodiesel. Also wife was really disappointed i traded it in. So in short i loved it and was leery of it but it never really let me down. And couldn't pass up the price on the 2500

Still has all of the emission control BS which I am contemplating removing. Still runs as good as new! This truck cannot be exclusively city driven. You must take it on the highway at the very minimum every 800kms. I think a lot of the failures comes from the fact that this truck is simply not meant for the average Joe. It's a truck with a purpose and that purpose is to be highway driven and get good mileage doing so.

Mostly it is my sales and customer service truck, so it gets lots of highway miles, as we are a rural company. I will be taking it from Alberta to Phoenix at the end of the week and will get great fuel efficiency, typically 28 miles per US gallon. Yep, 2015 GC for me. Unfortunately, we test drove a 5.7L, but only considered the trade a week before the decision to take the 3L Ecodiesel (100,000 km) on one last trip. And it was definitely the last trip (if you don't count the flatbed hauling). We were towing an approximately 5500lb trailer, until we were sitting on the shoulder with a blown-out turbo, and the whole emission system was dead, and some valve assembly melted on the transmission for $17,000 (U.S.) price tag. I'll admit it was kind-of fun to drive when it was actually running. However, there was one issue after the other (mainly emissions related, but an alternator had blown too). If you don't tow and also cruise on the highway everyday then it is probably fine, as I've seen some rather high odometers. Definitely my biggest vehicle regret though.

Soot accumulation in intake leads to the dual path intake dampers binding and kills the motor and gears. I the hose under intake that joins two coolant pipes (at least through 16) is not anything more than normal grade 5/8 hose and it splits open and it can run hot. 50 cents extra for a 13:31 5 inch piece of silicone high temp hose was too much? If it has run hot then glow plugs gall and break when removed. Those fail if it overheats and the intake may not come out without removing glow plugs on head as intake hangs up. I'm sure there are lots of these that have given good service for 200k miles but they carry extra risks.

You hit the nail right in the center with the Ecodiesel issues. I work on these tucks and replaced a few engines due to rod bearings (makes horrible squealing sound when starting BTW, probably due to lack of lubrication as you mentioned). Also replaced few intake manifolds due to sticking swirl valves, too much gunk build up in there. At around 100k there may be a coolant leak from the damn turbo coolant hose under the intake manifold, that is a lot of fun too. And don't get me started on these stupid magnetic reluctor wheels for the crankshaft sensor that keeps falling apart and then the engine takes a long time to start.

So with the thought it could blow again, we traded it in. Would have loved to give the newest generation a whirl but I had assumed that the EGR had sooted up the mains as you discussed. I can’t see why they ran 11 quarts of oil through such a little filter. If I had it to do over, I would have at least changed the filter every 3000 miles. The problem with most modern engines is the flimsy, inadequate cooling systems. Also the turbo engines of any kind get cooked oil on engine shutdown. Which clogs the oil passages.
The only thing I don't like on my 2016 Ecodiesel, is the low payload and weak front suspension.
As for the poor acceleration after the PCM reflash. Just use Tow/Haul mode until the engine is warm, or install the Bank's Pedal Monster.
I did install a Bank's iDash. I monitor engine coolant temp, engine oil temp, air density, and DPF %. Never shutdown a hot engine! Cool it down first!
I don't use my Ecodiesel that much anymore. Mainly because of parking issues at places I go. But on a icy, snowy road, I take the Ecodiesel, rather than our Cummins powered beast. That Cummins has unreal power, and the wheels break loose, even with our camper on the back!!!!

I had a 17 and loved it! Never had a lick of issues done a pile of hwy driving. Sold it when I changed my job and bought a Cummins. Would never go back. Cousin had one and his blew up a week after I sold mine. Made me feel better I sold it

I had a 2015 Laramie that I traded my 2019 2500 Cummins for. That Laramie almost got me to buy the 3rd Gen Eco before prices went insane.

I have 115k on mine and it had been the most reliable vehicle I have owned so far. Absolutely love mine. My neighbor bought one as well and had no issues while he owned it

These could be good to rebuild and swap into older trucks with emissions deleted

I loved this truck until my EGR failed and my engine caught fire. But it was a great tow vehicle.

Seems like the quality of vehicles reached their peak around 2015.

Another problem with these engines is the bed plate. Once it leaks oil it is non-serviceable so once it fails the whole engine needs to be replaced. Some of this happens as low as 50k miles.

Sounds like the only trucks with problems are 14-16 and was all addressed before the engine was moved to 3rd gen so am I wrong in assuming trucks built in 18-19 are fine.

3rd gen didn't start until 2020, the 2014-15 were the real problem children, they fixed some stuff in June 2016
