TESTED: Should you consider hybrid irons?

- With Wilson, Cleveland and Cobra all competing in the hybrid iron market in 2020, TG Test pro Neil Wain puts Wilson's new Launch Pad irons head-to-head against Cleveland's Launcher HB Turbo.
We use the Ping G410 iron as a benchmark to show what hybrid irons bring to the table.

You owe me a set of headphones!
Thank you. I will definitely consider them. Good to see Neil again. The putter you fitted me with is still doing a great job. Best wishes Neil. Manjit
I found a 5 iron launcher at play it again sports for $25, I thought it was a 5 wood hybrid so I bought it and crushed it 170 straight. A old man asked me if I found his 5 iron on the course last week and was that it, was so excited to find out they made a whole set. Ordered the turbo Cleveland launchers 5-pw on 2nd swing for only $525.00 they arrive tomorrow I can’t wait to play 18. I’ve had 9 back surgeries my max drive is 230-250 I have a 15 hdcp and it hurts like crazy to walk when I’m done but I just love it and I’m hoping these new clubs help. Love the channel
I play the HB Launcher 2017 model. As a 60 yo midhandicapper these have been a revelation in terms of improving consistency in my ball striking, enabling me to devote more time on other parts of my game. They have really added to my enjoyment.
Great to hear David, it's about time enjoyment rose up the scale of priorities for golfers.
David M Barr I feel the same David, had my HB Turbo clubs for about 2months,like you I am in my sixties and play off 11
Lex Fowell Glad to hear Lex. I’m still loving mine, with handicap steadily heading towards single figures thanks to my improved ball striking. Can’t see me swapping out. The extra launch and descent angles I get really helps at my swing speed these days. I’ve been able to move to a low compression, low spin ball (Callaway Supersoft) to get a bit more distance without compromising on
I play the same irons that you do. Maybe it's time for us to move up! Hit em straight ⛳
Excellent video. You answered my key concerns about hybrid irons.
Thanks for taking the time to say so Jeff, very much appreciated.
This is a great review. Last season I added a Cleveland Launcher HB in the # 8 and # 9 . I really like them. I was using them on an executive par 3 for short holes and shots and they worked wonders. I have a complete set of hybrids but I wanted to try these out and like them quite a bit. You make some great points on these guys. I certainly am not afraid to put them in my bag. I am going to pick up a # 7 in them as well. They are good stuff. Spider Dubiel
Thanks for the feedback Joseph, very much appreciated.
Love my Cobra T-rails (4i-SW). I also loved and still play the G20 hybrids so the shape and style suits my eye nicely.
Great to hear from so many hybrid iron lovers #whymakethegameharder
Still going well with them?
I have a 5, 7 & 9 hybrid irons ( ditched the rest ) and I use my 5 wood on many occasions to make up for the 3 or 4 irons. I've had them for 18 months. The ones I have are like mini woods. Look at the Japanese golfer who played in the last group on the final day in the seniors open when it was at Carnoustie. His whole set was hybrids
Bill Collie Thanks for the comment Bill.
Bill Collie really good bit of advice buddy thanks
Hi. I was lucky enough yesterday to try out the new Cobra t rail . I'm a 22 handicapper. And was very impressed with it. The ease of getting the ball in the air made it so enjoyable. I am going to look/ try the Cleveland in the new year.
My advice to anyone looking into these clubs. Get out try them out.
Cheers Ian
Ian Docksey Thanks for the comment Ian.
Excellent video, I have just turned 60 playing off 16 and have played for last 5 months Cleveland 588 Altitude 5-PW, tried my friends Ping G410's and the Cleveland are way more forgiving and longer (1/2" longer than standard irons maybe helps). I get some stick lol but when you take the money I'm the one laughing. Mid handicap testing at normal golfer speeds would be good to give a better reflection. They are Marmite clubs lol its took me 5 months to get used to the look, but I've converted one of my mates from Cobra bafflers to the PRE Progressive Hybrid Iron Set he loves them. Wilson,Cobra and Cleveland must think they will sell a good many sets to make it worthwhile. Great for chipping with 7 or 8 irons no more clunks lol.
dongolfnut Thanks for the comment, glad you’ve seen the light.
This is great there are loads of golfers out there who would benefit from these. I wish our pro would look at these to help the majority of our members. Great work Simon 👍
Thanks Andrew, it's the numbers that Cleveland bat about that really stand out for us. A CG 17% lower and 47% deeper than a typical game improver iron, is really significant.
Thanks for the feedback.

I just purchase the Power Bilt EX 550 Hybrid Irons. Of course it's winter here in upstate New York, so the in door Dome is the golf range of choice. As a 17 handicapper I couldn't be happier with the performance of these hybrid irons.
Except for the sound quality, you guys look to have an excellent golf. RUclips test site.
Rickoh75 Thanks so much for the feedback, it’s very much appreciated. Apologies on the sound we had some issues on this particular day, we are now looking at new sound equipment.
I love my set of last generation HB launchers.
Stevo Is Lost Glad to hear it Stevo.
I'm a 24 handicap...these irons(wilson launch pad) literally changed my life. They are beautiful in person and the forgiveness is insane. If you're a high handicapper buy a set...it makes the game fun! I've been playing steady for 5 years and just can't seem to get good...these have made my iron game accurate. Now if only I could dial in my driver lol
Thanks so much for your input Blake, great to hear you've found a set that work for you.
Glad to read your comment, Blake.
I use old hybrid irons club : Nickent hybrid 3DX
Interesting video was thinking about getting Cleveland HB launcher irons but bought Taylormade M CGB combo set because Taylormade 4 & 5 hybrids seem more forgiving.
jungyul kim The CGB’s are a solid choice in the super game improver category too.
Hi... Thanks for the review. Like everything you said but the lightness. Would you know what the sw would be on the wilson with the evenflo shaft and one inch over length? Is the standard r in the evenflo a 5.0 or 5.5. Thank you.
I game the 4 and 5 iron cleveland launcher irons as a replacement for a hybrid. These play very much like a hybrid but have iron length shafts which is what I was looking for. They are extremely easy to hit and launch the ball higher than my equivalent 3 and 4 irons. The 4 and 5 cleveland are the same lofts as my old irons but launch higher and stop on the green better. I strike my irons very well and still these qualities help me drop the ball on the green and stop. My 4 cleveland goes 205 yards and yesterday stopped within 7 feet on a rather hard green. My old 3 iron would have rolled right off the back. You don't need to be 70yo to play these
Thanks for the input Eric.
Neil has an amazing swing. Well done guys.
Thanks for taking the time to feedback Eric, appreciate it.
I game the Cleveland 588 Altitude hybrid irons. Same club just a little older. Excellent clubs. And for those of you who say they won't spin I'm here to tell you your wrong. I hit mid irons into greens, 6 iron 7 iron even the 5 iron, will hit and stop. Amazing clubs and extremely satisfying to use. I have 4 iron to approach wedge. I just wish i could get a 3 iron. Try em!
james monty Thanks for the feedback James. Much appreciated. Glad you’ve seen the light.
I bought a set of the previous model HB Launchers with A-flex shafts 5-GW recently, mainly for my wife to use. I took them out today in 70 kph winds. Not an issue with control and accuracy. ( I am 66 y.o. 15 handicap) The 5 iron was really easy to hit well, not something I do well usually. Impressive!
Thanks for the input Kym, will you be using them again?
I did play with them today. I hit a 41 score for 9 holes. They tend to fly straight or a slight draw. After a bit of trial and error I got them to fade as well.
@@kymstock1852 Brilliant, sounds like a result.
Interesting video and well put together. I wonder how the new PXG 0211z hybrid irons stack up and wether other manufacturers also get involved. I guess their challenge is not to take money away from their core business ie producing traditional looking irons. I’m pushing towards single figures but approaching age 52 I’m seriously thinking about giving these a trial for the distance and added height on approach shots
Thanks for the feedback Ford, really appreciate you taking the time. We've just been testing High Handicap Irons (including hybrid irons) over the last two weeks. The PXG 0211 Z performed really well, and we'll have a video up next month. The data sheet the video is created from will be up on our website here www.todaysgolfer.co.uk/equipment/golf-clubs/club-sets/pxg/0211-z/ within the next couple of weeks.
They are a really interesting category, our pro is always left with a smile on his face whenever we test hybrid irons, it's crazy but we all love to make the game harder than it needs to be.
Great video! How do these irons compare to the older game improvement hybrid type irons like Calloway's fusion wide sole?
Thank you Michael, appreciate the feedback.
We've not tested them against the Fusion, but if you scroll pretty much to the bottom of the linked page below, you can see how the Wilson and Cleveland gave the smallest drop offs for ball speed and carry distance in this years super game improver iron test.
bit.ly/2UJ2PYN
Hope that helps.
Not seen the fusion
Just pulled the trigger on the Wilson launch pad...thank you.
Enjoy Jeffrey, love to know how you get on with them.
I just tried the Tour Edge version of this style of iron-hybrid club. I was impressed. In my opinion as a senior player ( 12 handicap now) it makes sense to try these if you are having any issues with an iron or your iron set ( flight, spin , distance) . I was having gapping distance between my 6 &7 iron, unless I got a good strike. The Tour Edge HL 521 E product was far more forgiving of less than perfect strike. Now I am thinking whether I should consider replacing the 7 irons too.
I tried the older TE Bazookas iron-hybrid today. They were very draw biased. Possibly for a more skilled golfer the HL 521C model would be preferred. ( less off set)
I just purchased 9, pw and gap from Tour Edge in the 522 E model. I already owned 4 thru 9 in Callaway Rogue x hybrids. Only conventional iron is my s/w. I'm 67 and have been playing for over 50 years and my iron play has slowly declined over the last few years. Hybrids have given me new life.
I was looking at a video from Tom Wishon discussing his EQ1 NX hollow body single length irons, hybrids and fairway woods. I have been considering these irons ( Wilson, Clevelnad , Cobra) in the 4& 5 iron area to add to my single length set as I age and lose swing speed, but I think the EQ1 hybrids might be a better fit.
Thanks for the input Kym, yes from our testing launching a single-length 4 and 5 iron can be tough. Hybrid iron models can really help.
I bought a set of "iron-woods" here in the States made by Tour Edge called the HL3. I've played for 40 years, every kind of iron, including forged models. These clubs are simply easier to hit. The ones I have have a forged face, which feels really solid at impact. I shoot around 85, and don't mind the look at all. I'm not trying to turn pro, I'm trying to enjoy the game more. These kinds of clubs give you more confidence at address. If you like hitting hybrids, you'll like hitting these. The reason I went with Tour Edge over the Cleveland model was price. Doesn't make sense to pay 2-300 dollars more if you don't have to.
eddie brown Lovely feedback Eddie, trying to enjoy the game more wouldn't hurt a good number of golfers at all.
Thank you for this review. As a 22+ handicap, I'm looking for something to improve my game so I can break 100 on a regular basis. This helps me understand that the hybrids might just be what I need to improve my game!
Thanks for the feedback Stephen, glad we could help.
Hey just got a set of Wilson launcher’s ...can say their easy to hit and they fly straight (don’t hit fat tho) I had a good day with my irons ...bad day with driver tho LOL but the irons were fun ... did I have a off hit or two ...yes ...my fault ...tried to peek .... will I or would I buy another set ... dam right I will
Curious how these two and the trail compare to the ping g710 and a few of the other more traditional looking game improvement irons.
I play the g700s (last years version of the 710) and I love their size and offset. I'm very confident hitting the ball with them. That said, while I've played my 5 and 4 iron better in my Ping g700s than any other previous iron set I've used, I still go back to my old callaway razr x hybrids (3-5) because I'm simply more solid and consistent.
That said, I've played the clevelands and they really do what they say they do. They are "clunky" in size but that's most likely part of the appeal. These will not ever get stuck hitting out of the rough. I did notice a little more weight in the head and just looking at the club in photos, you can see why. Even though it's hollow, it's still a little more metal overall.
I've also hit the wilsons and my opinion is they have a much classier looking club. And it hits well too. If you really are a hybrid guy and are comfortable looking at clubs that aren't the major brands, go find Thomas Golf. (thomasgolf.com) They do full sets of hybrids all the way up to a 60 degree. These aren't fat irons... they are nicely made hybrids. It's my guess that if they said "callaway" or "taylormade" on them, you would see them all over the golf courses, especially with players with higher handicaps.
I'm fairly new to golf, and I think hybrid irons and game improvement clubs look WAY better than any blade. I have Adams Idea V3 hybrid irons and I'm in love with them and the way they look.
uNkLeRaRa4 Great you've seen the light, thanks for the comment.
Great review the most thorough on u tube, excellent. I've played HB Launcher great club but lost distance with too much spin, bot would test these models for sure. Would love to see you test the Cobra T rail against these two in the ultimate hybrid iron test. Nobody to date has tested all three.
Which did you like better for someone who is vision impaired. I am leaning toward the Wilson Staff.. I enjoy your videos. Good on you!
It's a real personal choice Joe, we're hybrid fans, so we'd just slide towards the wider body Cleveland, but if you prefer irons the Wilson's are every bit as good.
I fit the demographic for these clubs. Definitely something of interest to me. Thank you
Pleasure, glad we could help.
Can you please do a review on the TaylorMade Stealth HD irons.
I should try these for my next set. Do they feel softer off the face as hybrids normally do?
They're made from the same steel as a lot of hybrids, so you could expect similar results/sound.
I like the idea of a hybrid iron and this is the first test I have seen of them but ...When testing clubs aimed at higher handicaps and slower swing speeds why use a player that can hit a 7 iron 180 yards? No player hitting the ball that well would ever use these clubs. Why have Neil guessing if the G410 would be less forgiving? Test it!
Chris Lewis Thanks for the comment Chris. The beauty of using Neil is we get solid repeatable impact, which golfers who these clubs are aimed at really struggle with. We’ve tried using for want of a better phrase “average golfers” before but it’s almost impossible to get any reliable data because there’s such a gulf between strikes. From what we’ve seen before results can be very misleading as you end up analysing the golfers performance with each club, not the club itself.
I agree with Chris lewis, the golfer who these clubs are aimed at don't need to care about data and numbers. Your intro to this video was about egos and how they play too much role in choosing clubs yet you're supplying a data set which is just there to entice a different type of ego.
Why don't you take a series of players, a cat 1, cat 2 and cat 3 player and give them a blade, a small cavity, a game improvement iron and a super g I iron. Ask them to hit 20 shots with each club and tell us how many shots they hit solidly with each club. That would actually tell us something worthwhile.
Robert Court It sounds like a nice little idea Robert, you just have to realise this style of test analyses the performance of the golfer not the performance of the clubs being hit. And the issue we have with this style of testing is just because a golfer hit half their shots well with one style of iron, on that particular day, it doesn’t mean they will see the same results the following day, week or month. So essentially it’s misleading.
Our intention is to show useful comparisons for golfers. So golfers looking at hybrid irons are highly likely to want to know how they compare to a standard cavity back iron. Hence the point of this test.
Essentially it was Cleveland’s claim of a 17% lower and 47% deeper CG on the Launcher Turbo that sparked this test, we wanted to see what that means in terms of performance (ball speed and carry distance drop offs). Which is essentially what our channel is all about.
Hope that explains.
@@simondaddow thank you for a sensible reply and I do appreciate that you're trying to show what the club can do. It is, however, my argument that the golfer who this type of club is aimed at (someone like me) isn't or at least shouldn't be interested in 80 odd mile an hour swing speed shots carrying 170 yards and spinning at 6000 revs. We're simply not capable of playing this type of shot. What I would really like to know is if this wide sole and low cg really does help me hit more playable shots that allows me to get round the course a bit easier and enjoy it a bit more.
I think it's fair to say as fact that golfers have too big an ego when choosing equipment. Would you agree that any club review that has a data set showing performance numbers is just making those egos worse? OK I might be losing a bit of ego by playing a full set of hybrids but saying it goes x distance with y spin etc is just trying to rebuild that damaged ego and salvage a bit of pride. If iron type does make a difference I'd rather my ego was massaged by shooting 93 instead of 101.
Robert Court Completely understand where you’re coming from Robert and you absolutely are not wrong for having an opinion. Yes ego probably does come into more decisions golfers make than it should.
On a personal Ievel I make a point of leaving ego at the fitting room door. From listening to fitters I’ve come to play a draw driver, very strong lofted irons and cavity back wedges (and I’m a 10 handicapper), all of which help my game. From the conversations I’m having more golfers are starting to think a bit more like this, hence why we’ve put out a video specifically on hybrid irons, which is something we wouldn’t have done a few years ago. At the end of the day, golf’s a hard game, I like a lot of other golfers still want to enjoy it, and really don’t want to make it any harder than it needs to be.
Thanks for your comments by the way, feedback is always welcome.
The gaps between all three wedges and the 7 irons of each set was unbelievable, over 40 plus yards of gap to be filled by just two irons, the 9 then 8 iron.
Don't forget those gaps would be closer at slower speeds. Which is the type of player the irons are aimed at.
Hoping to play again after a full shoulder replacement but the Doc thinks I can give it a go next year.
Now about the video: I've been eyeing these hybrids and also the cobra TRails. After watching some other comparison videos I'm leaning on these Turbos.
On another note I've used Bazooka hybrids for the past 20 years and I like them but they're old (just like me 60) and extremely heavy for me. My swing speed is around 90ish so getting fitted would be the next step... Next year.
Maybe they'll come out with a turbo2 for next year...
Thanks for the input. The Turbo's will be 2 years old in August 2021, which typically is Cleveland's life cycle for updating product.
In other videos, the Cobras have higher spin rates but a little less distance. Like 5 yards. Some folks prefer that for green control.
What would be nice is seeing a senior high handicap(80 mph club head speed max) player swinging their clubs.
THEN you switch them into these hybrids with correct shaft. We will know then if they improve his shots.
I am a 5 handicap that is getting older, and I bought the Cobra T-Rail hybrid irons. Got my balls busted by my buddies, until I started hitting them. Almost never hit a fat shot now, and they spin just fine and definitely hit it higher. Too many golfers hit the ball with their ego. Hit whatever clubs feel and look good to you.
Very well said Bradford.
Hello Bradford are you still playing the T rails, are they going well. Any problem with the paintwork marking or chipping.
Stay safe.
Mel
@@melwalker2135 Not at this time, but not because they didn't perform. I changed Country Clubs and my new club doesn't have nearly as many elevated greens so I didn't need the high ball flight I got from the T-Rails. I am using Cobra F9 Speedbacks now BUT am not getting rid of my T-rails...they are still a great club with very high launch and very high spin (for me), which I will need again some day, for sure. Those clubs aren't going anywhere! The black paintwork has definitely started coming off, but the outside black is still very nice.
I have the Cleveland Launcher Irons that I love. I want to add a wedge to the set, what do you suggest?
Hi Bob, are you using the PW in the Launcher?
A natural progression would be to look at the Cleveland CBX/CBX 2 wedges, they're designed specifically for club golfers. The slightly lighter shaft would sit comfortably alongside the Launcher hybrid irons.
@@todaysgolfer Yes, am using the Launcher PW. Thanx for the recommendation.
Interesting, what I would ask is what is the downside ? are they consistent or will we see huge variation in distances ?
I'm open to the idea the results are whats key and they look ok to me, I would possible keep a PW, GW, SW as traditional wedges but be happy for 9-5 as a set and then a 3-4 wood and Driver.
James Lovering Thanks for the comment James. From what we’ve seen so far variation is coming more strike than how the club performs. Our drop offs from longest to shortest were no different to a game improver iron. Admittedly they are not for everyone. But for golfers who just want to enjoy the game, hybrid irons are now a serious contender.
Interesting video. Please fix the sound.
Pétur Stefánsson Thanks, we will get the sound sorted.
I am 70, and my handicap is 22. Should I go for Senior flex or stay with the Regular flex?
Highly likely the Senior will be a good match, but we'd always suggest to have a fitter look you over too.
I looooove my HB Turbo (ladies) so forgiving and consistent, nothing but Cleveland in the bag... HB Launcher Turbo Driver (12deg), Halo 2 Hybrid, HB Launcher Turbo 5 Wood, a CBX 50 wedge, my putter and these babies... HB Launcher Turbo Irons! (Irons in 6 to 9, PW, SW). The looks aren’t even noticeable on the course for me, they look like a typical iron and the black just looks like a shadow in the grass, to be honest it’s about how well they perform... such an underrated brand Cleveland is, but I love the reasonable pricing of them (not spending extras on adjustable hosel and weight bolts you just don’t need therefore making them more affordable...). I wouldn’t use anything else!! Quality and consistency, it’s a no brainer!! Brush your egos aside and get your hands on these babies!! Great honest video, thank you 😊
Thanks Kitima, great to hear you've discovered the benefits of hybrid irons.
Last few vids have had poor sound quality .. u need to sort it fast.. content is excellent
Larry Prowse Thanks Larry we’re on it.
What about Mizuno jpx hi fli?
They're a set of hybrids Nigel. Only available down to a #7 so not really aimed at the same golfers as whole sets of hybrid irons.
My clubs don't label me as an "average golfer". My scorecard on a good day does. Lol
Just got the Wilson’s from ebay must say I am struck by how good they look. We all know they’re not blades. Different style of club. I am looking forward to playing them over winter.
Liked the video but would have been better if you had a 18 handicapper to hit and compare with also
mike johnson Thanks for the comment Mike. Problem is it’s not really possible to do an accurate comparative test using an 18 handicapper. We’ve tried a number of times before but with ball striking being so hit and miss you don’t create meaningful data. Essentially you end up analysing the golfers performance, not the clubs.
That’s a cop out, I didn’t say get rid of the person evaluating the club but the guy even said if a real high handicapper hit the ball the data would be more realistic, I guess you guys are afraid you might lose your gig
Robert Johnson We might need to agree to disagree on this one. We just don’t see the value of putting out misleading data has to anyone. We’re offering a comparison. On hybrid irons in particular it’s a worthwhile test (so long as it is comparative data in our opinion) as we know so few will cover them, because the audience is so limited.
simondaddow it only misleading to you I guess
Do you remember the old Nike Slingshot OSS irons? They had an extra wide sole like these. Do you think the Nike’s has the same performance as these? Just curious.
Thanks for the comment Joe. Similar for sure, but without the faster faces we get today.
Today's Golfer Maybe if you can get ahold of an old Nike, you can compare the Trackman numbers between them?
@@joegarza1835 Possibly Joe, will see what we can do.
Today's Golfer That would be great to see.
I would be interested in what a majority of your staff thought was the better between the two clubs?
far77fae It's less about one of the clubs being better and more about which suits you and your game. The Cleveland is a great option for golfers who already like hybrids. The Wilson is more like an iron shape, just with the addition of a hybrid body on the back.
Was accuracy addressed in this test ?
Hi Jack, we don't usually consider accuracy as a valuable metric, as it's so changeable between sessions.
So on any particular day we may see a tiny dispersion, where on subsequent days, weeks or months it's just not possible to replicate the numbers, so accuracy can be very misleading.
What we do instead is to look at the drop off's in ball speed, spin and carry distance as they give a much more reliable analysis between models.
All of the comparison data for the irons in this video can be viewed on our website (on the link below) which also shows drop off information. Hope that helps.
bit.ly/2VDqhHg
Pretty much every review of the HB Launcher uses two words: High and straight. Those two things usually lend themselves to accurate shots.
You say these clubs are aimed at the over 60 mid to high h/c. That is exactly what I am so why not get someone like me to test these clubs. It would make your video much more relevant and compelling.
Peter and Yvette Edge spot on comment!
Well said, and tell us about different shaft options. Also where to get them because everywhere I go it’s no stock and no demo clubs and their fitting centres around London are hopeless!
Hard to argue that an 18-20 handicapper should have been used in the test, it may have swayed me into buying a set.
A few questions: I like they way both look. Did one seem to be all around better quality, performance, easier to play feeling? Also, have you had a chance to test the Cobra T-Rails yet? If so, how did they compare? Finally, do you know of anymore companies designing and or putting out a set in the near future that might be better then all 3 of these? Tyvm!! Ps. I agree its weird to use a expert golfer to test these. You should use a handful of high handicappers with their regular irons. Then have them play these for a week and have them come back and see if the had major game improvements using the hybrid irons. Its more work but it would really show what interested folks are wanting to know. Cheers!!
Thanks for the feedback Kinetic, understand why you would feel that way. We've done plenty of player testing over the years, but always found you end up analysing the performance of the golfer with each club, instead of the performance of the golf club. Which can give some very misleading results. Obviously because mid-handicap golfers have such an inconsistent strike pattern.
We prefer instead to get a consistent pro involved in all our reviews. It means we can give an accurate comparison between models, rather than how a club golfers hit each.
We haven't tested the T-Rails alongside these two models (thanks to lockdown) yet, for us we'd probably slide just towards the Cleveland Launcher, just because we're hybrid fans. Completely understand though other golfers could easily go the opposite way.
Hope that helps.
Today's Golfer Good point. Maybe I can demo them at a course? Don’t think Golf World or Dicks is open for demo’s. I was kinda liking the look of the Wilsons a lil more. They look more solid and full and might prevent chunking better. But Ive never touched any club from Wilson b4. Thought they were more on the low end of quality and funding on R & D. But I guess not since you say they are worthy and the reviews on them are all very positive. Ive only played one hybrid, the TaylorMade GAPR 4 HI & I don’t really love it. I have a hard time getting the ball to go straight at where Im aiming. I just read a review on them that said their good for low handicappers. Totally thought they were super game improvement clubs when I bought it. Oh well. The reviews on all 3 hybrid iron sets are all very positive which makes the choice that much harder. I’m gonna try the Wilsons I think.?.?.? Can always return, sell, or trade them if I don’t love em. Thanks for the input. 🏌️♂️⛳️✌️
@@kinetic-kutz671 Pleasure, let us know how they go.

Bill Ryan Could not have said it better ourselves Bill.
My dad just ordered a set of t rails. He launches the ball high with his old irons, but he struggles with getting the distance. 7 Iron about 110 yards and so. Do you think he will gain some yardage with the t rails? Looking forward to seeing how they will work out for him.
Thanks for the comment Nicolai, did he not give them a try first?
I agree with Chris Lewis, please use a player of similar handicap/ability as to whom this type of club is aimed at or its just a complete waist of time.
Mel Walker Thanks for the feedback Mel. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. But we’d argue completely the opposite. Getting reliable comparative data only comes from repeatable impacts. We’ve tried club golfer testing before but it’s so hit and miss between strikes you end up analysing the golfers performance with each club, not the club itself.
@@simondaddow Valid point Simon, understandable.
I’ve said this before on other reviews (and am starting to sound like a broken record), get the pro to properly demonstrate the full potential which is essential, and then a couple of players of the handicap that the product is aimed at. Until you do you are not serving your audience.
Check audio for distortion before recording......
I wish someone would add Power Play Select 5000 to this kind of test. They are very near the same, only about $200 cheaper.
I am almost 72, have a poor swing due to chronic arthritis but love to play golf because its the only sport I can now play do you think my slow swing can be compensated with these clubs I don't care what anybody's opinion is as long as I can still enjoy my golf
Very well said.
I'd like to see a test where a 15 handicap (or similar) is hitting them.
Completely understand why you'd think that Raymond, problem is it's really hard getting reliable data from higher handicap golfers.
We've seen before such testing can produce some very misleading results, as essentially you analyse how the golfer has hit each model, not how well the each has performed.
What do you think about player hybrids? Im looking at the Apex 19 hybrid to go with my Apex Pro 19s for more of a rescue club from fairway bunker and to punch out of trees and other bad lies.
Nice question. Callaway see the Apex as their 'tour' style hybrid and from our experience it's pretty low launch compared to some of the wider body models available.
We are though huge fans of replacing difficult to hit longer irons with hybrids in a style that suits you. Have you tried the Apex?
@@todaysgolfer Yes I have 4-AW Apex Pro 19s with Nippon Modus 105 shafts. I think the Apex 19 hybrid would be a bery versatile club. I have a 18 degree utility iron and 5 wood, so 3 clubs would be very similar. I don't know which to take out of the bag? That would be a great video. 5 wood, utility iron or hybrid? Thanks for the response!!
@@gamingwithwarbucks3863 No probs, pleasure. We've done some testing along these lines, link below if you're interested.

@@todaysgolfer Thanks for the info, and great content and information. Hope you have a great weekend!!
@@todaysgolfer That was a great read, honestly I forgot about the GAPR lol. I like that your content is data driven and not opinionated. Keep up the good work guys👌
Was this recorded in 2002?
2019 Mike, our sound man had some issues with the mics. Apologies.
I feel that this type of GI iron would be perfect for me but my problem is that I simply cannot hit a regular hybrid. When I bought my last set my fitter said to try it. After some swings and horrible mishits he said nevermind after I showed him how easily I hit a 3 an 4 iron. I'd just be concerned id run into same problem with hybrid irons.
Waddacollector Thanks for the feedback, as forgiving as hybrid irons can be, they're certainly not the solution for everyone. Attack angle can cause some strike issues for certain players.
Every time he says “basically,” take a drink.
I would be really drunk.
Jeff Job the word drives me, basically nuts, I own a set of Cleveland HB Turbos, they play well
@@lexfowell8500 They do hit well... Cleveland, Wilson, and Cobra all have hybrid irons. More golfers should play them.
Alcohol poisoning basically
Basically I’ll end up an acholic .... basically
MyGolfSpy rated the Tour Edge HL3 iron-woods best SGI clubs last year. Same idea. If some pro starts winning with clubs like this in the bag, they'll start selling like hotcakes, and everybody will want them and in 10 years todays clubs will be like blades from the 60's, totally obsolete.
John McCullough Thanks for the comment John.
I’d love to be an average golfer.😊
A problem for me with this review, good as it is, is that over 120 mph ball speed and over 180 yard carry with a 7 iron are scratch handicap or pro numbers, achievable only by someone with a 93-93 mph club head speed with a 7 iron. That is not the player they are intended for. They are not remotely near what an average middle handicapper who swings a 7 iron at 74-75 mph can get. Have no doubt that they would also help the slower swinger, but it would be nice to see both players demo the clubs to understand which club has the greatest dropoff in performance with a slow swing speed. You say that with the slower swing speed player the Ping 410 would doubtless show less peak height and a shallower descent angle, but why not show it.
Completely understand where you're coming from John, we've talked about this lots before.
The issue is finding a suitable player who can hit slower speed/high handicap irons consistently enough to allow for an accurate data analysis between each model.
Our thinking is this style of video gives golfers a starting point, what to look out for, which models stand out to us and why etc. Then of course we would always recommend getting fitted from there on in.
Hope that helps.
Sound quality of the mic is terrible
Apologies Craig. Our videographer has sorted it for future videos.
Did you record this audio using a potato?
very good content, very Poor sound
Thanks for the feedback Dicky, consider our videographer fired!

Our policy is always to be up front, completely appreciate this video isn't for everyone.
@@todaysgolfer I enjoyed the video just thought that was funny 👍
He says basically more than my 8 year old says technically.
Practically it is a set of low lofted chippers
He looks like Radar from MASH
Only "for players who want to have fun and enjoy the game!" Isn't that everybody?
Good video but why don’t you use 18 and 24 handicap golfers to test them? What’s the point of a pro testing them?? Also sad to say Cleaveland UK is a terrible company. Twice contacted them for these and CBX 2 wedges. Their recommended fitting centres csnnot even be bothered to call back.
We use a pro so we can accurately show how models compare.
We've tried using higher handicap golfers for testing before but the strike pattern is so inconsistent you essentially end up analysing the golfers performance with each club, not the clubs performance.
These irons are not for guys hitting 7 iron 180 yards---get an OK senior that hits his 7 140 on a good shot--then see how consistant and forgiving these clubs really are.
Your story line was about how a golfer over 60 loses 1/2 mile an hour clubhead speed per year. Then you take a young golfer to test the clubs for data....worthless results at this point. Get a 60 year old golfer and get good data.
Hybrid irons aren't just for 60+ year olds Larry. Ours came in a stiff shaft set-up just like we'd use for any other iron test.
Can't wait until I get some age on me so I can grab some hybrid irons! Haha!
"curry distance". ??????
Your next video should be with a high handicapper golfer testing the Cobra T rail hybrid -irons on a real course, complete with a few poor lies. Perhaps have one of the Wilson or Clevland clubs along for comparison in the poor lie.
Thanks for the feedback Kym.
So, er.... where’s the vid of these being tested by 15/20/25 handicappers?? Nice but not really properly exploring what these are about....
Thanks for the comment Ian. Experience (from testing with mid - higher handicappers) tells us it's really difficult to get any meaningful data from golfers of this ability.
Essentially with such hit and miss strike locations you end up analysing the golfers performance with each club, not the performance of the club. Which obviously gives misleading results.
We prefer to show how the the models compare, in terms of true performance. And give an opinion on how we found them, compared to other irons we've tested.
Thanks for reply and it’s a reasonable point but the thought process shdn’t stop there. Ideas: 1) get your pro to slow swing speed to, say, 75mph for 7i; 2) use high handicappers but just get them to comment; 3) use HHs but just show their dispersion; 4) use HHs but eliminate worst 20% of strikes. You CAN do more
Ian Ashton Absolutely agree Ian, we can always do more, fact is though we'd still be analysing them on a lopsided playing field, by getting comment on such inconsistent strike patterns. Glad that some of the comments on this video show there's golfers who love their hybrid irons, by showing how they compare we hope we've added to the debate, of should more golfers use them.
Are these types of irons bendable? Lie adjustment
I wonder why you don't do these test in average clubhead speed as these clubs are targeted for mid-high handicap players...
We've tried Sikke. But such inconsistent striking means you end up evaluating how the golfer has performed with each club, which is no reflection of how the club performs.
A consistent strike is essential if you want to 'compare' products.
@@todaysgolfer ok, thank's for the reply. So - why not use the pro golfer and ask him/her to use slower swing speed?
@@sikkelitmanen1524 You could try that, but it's hard to be consistent when you're not swinging at your natural pace.
Again you'd create some really misleading numbers.
@@todaysgolfer ...which would be less miss leading numbers for mid-high handicapper than testing 90-95 mph. I'm sure every pro could hit 80 mph + - 2 mph if asked.....
@@sikkelitmanen1524 The least misleading will of course be an accurate comparison.
If you saw the numbers we've seen some amateurs create you'd probably agree.
80mph (+/- 2mph) sounds easy on paper, but you only need look at how tour pro's get stuck between two clubs to realise consistently hitting 1/2 or 3/4 speed shots isn't as easy as you first thought.
low-budget whiteboard, so stand in front of it so none can see ...
It's a zero budget whiteboard Anders, as it's actually a wipeable wall. All the data though is available on our website, link below should you need it.

Hitting fat = faulty technique
chrislynch52 Don’t think you’ll find too many arguments on that one Chris.
Almost everyone has addressed your use of a highly skilled player to test these makes.
I come at this two years after you’ve produced the video and having read all your comments I still believe your testing is flawed.
“I consider myself a good ball striker”, a straight comment from the non bespectacled player. Really, really really take 5 minutes with a high handicap golfer (22 and above) and let them be the judge of that “ahhhhh” moment. We can all watched skilled players (that’s you two presenters) and take nothing from it.
I understand your correct viewpoint that a high handicapper doesn’t have a repeatable swing and thus you’ve excluded them form “test” data as it would be inconsistent. BUT, pull someone off the streets, the clubhouse, or an in magazine draw. Someone who doesn’t have an “ego” and who knows their faltering shots won’t show their game in the positive light we all dream of. But for the 70,000 or so viewers they will get a far better idea of reality than a high quality golfer swinging away saying “these will help -here’s the data”.
So, sort it out and address how you demonstrate items for the future please.
Completely respect your right to an opinion Phil, but we, like a number of well respected engineers within the game, don't see a place for accurate analysis of products using inconsistent golfers.
We've tried amateur testing before and the data created was completely misleading and would never be repeated on any subsequent day. We'd never want to make recommendations based on such unreliable data. Hence why we've shied away from it since.
If however you were happy with a golfers opinion with no data analysis that would be a completely different thing. Opinion though not fact isn't really us either.
Jesus.... someone needs to look at buying a new microphone.
Shoulda had some ego when getting their audio equipment amirite
If you play hybrid irons, be ready for the consequences and accept becoming a second class citizen in the golfinh world. I brought my bridgestone JGR hybrid irons out at my local range and actually was kicked off and banned for 1 year, citing "non conforming" equipment dangerous to other members, as the club heads could come off and seriously hurt someone because of their extra mass. I get a lot of dirty looks on the course when people see the clubs. There is just something about these clubs that rubs people the wrong way.
Hybrid Irons are horrible.
Hybrid Irons are worthless.
Hybrid Irons are garbage and anyone that plays them. THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE!!!!!!
