  • We get five days unprecedented access to PXG's R&D robot to test the latest golf balls.
We test 21 different golf balls at three driver swing speeds (85 MPH, 100 MPH and 115 MPH), and hit each model with irons and wedges to show what's on the line by making the wrong selection.
Based on data we choose our top performers and explain what you need to know to select the best golf ball for your own game.
See all our golf ball test data and further explanation here bit.ly/2mo9Ws7

I feel like the prov1 is very overrated for mid/high handicappers (I E the majority of golfers, all of which aren't on the Tour). Doesn't work great for those of us who cant swing above 118mph, cant shape a ball precisely on demand, and cant afford to lose $5 bills every time the driver doesn't cooperate. at $35 the Bridgestone Tour B RX would be the better value/performance choice for nearly all of us. That being said, why has my beloved TopFlite not been tested?! lol

@@kauaigold perhaps if we r treasuring our golf balls, maybe we will be more careful in our shot strategies. Typically,, hit and hope hasn’t been a great strategy for me. Sure, break out the long used balls for blind tee shots.

Kudos to Today's Golfer for doing this comprehensive ball test. Thanks to PXG folks for making their facilities and resources available. With the mind-boggling array of golf balls available, from every manufacturer, it has been next to impossible to figure out which balls may be best-suited for you. This study makes the job easier, so we don't have to go out try out every ball out there. This objective study is 100 times better than what Golf Digest and Golf Magazine do in their golf ball reviews where all balls neatly fit in their 5-star or Gold/Silver designations and you are left scratching your head as confused as ever. About time someone brought some clarity to golf ball selection. Hope you will continue to do this kind of analysis in the future on a regular basis. Hit 'em straight!

I gamed the Vice Pro+ all summer and noticed I was really erratic some rounds off the tee box. The 19 yards of dispersion vs the Pro model at only 13 yards of dispersion makes me lean towards going to with Pro from now on. My home course is very tight with lots of water so this is definitely useful to know. Loved the performance of the Vice ball around the greens and the wedge spin numbers back that up.

I keep coming back to this video and the info on the site. Thank you for all the hard work.
I know it's expensive and extremely labor intensive to do this testing, and it is much appreciated. I do wish you could test more of the $20-$35 balls, but I understand that you have to focus on the high-performance urethane balls. I'm a 7 Hcp at the moment, but I just prefer surlyn balls. I like the way they play and I simply don't spend $40+ for golf balls.
Anyway, I know if you did such a test, it would be a big hit! Thanks again for your hard work and attention to detail.

Great job! So many golf balls on the market and too many to try them all, let alone getting fit for one without narrowing down the field first. This is exactly what we needed to do just that. Now we can take this info and focus on a few different balls to dial the correct one in. I do wish the Titleist AVX was included, since it is priced as a premium ball and it's designed for less spin off the irons, lower ball flight trajectory, thus longer based on those design factors. With the Pro V1/X performing so well in your test it would have been interesting to see if that carried over into the AVX. Thanks again for the hard work!

Excellent video!! Your hard work is very much appreciated! The fascinating comment you made was about soft vs hard golf balls with the performance amd spin. I like playing a softer ball and thought I got better spin with the irons. I will say when I play the Pro V1x, I play better golf, but cry when losing one or hitting the cart path and putting a huge scuff mark on one. Your cost per yard comparison data probably means more to some of us than we want to admit. But technically I think that is what I;m trying to do when picking a ball I can afford and yet have the close performance of a Pro V1x. Thank you again for this video! @@kourt2469 Thank you for the info. I played my first round with them yesterday and just now finished reading the article. I agree with it as I as well found the ball a bit firmer on all shots but I didn't notice a significant drop in spin or distance The greens had just been aerated and sanded 2 weeks ago and were slow and bumpy so probably not a very good test on the short game. I'm 60 y.o., play off a 14 and shot 81 on a relatively easier course than we normally play. I did not notice significant wear and tear on the cover. Overall, imo, they're a very good deal. I be curious what the "pros", with their higher swing speeds, report once they're done with their testing.

    💪 Incredibly awesome comparison! 💪
This is the first time I've seen a golf ball compare to a robot.
So far only with human testers who can never create a constant swing, which is simply impossible because there is always a fluctuation in the turns.
And so such comparison tests are always a bit difficult to evaluate, even if they are professional players.
You have put in an incredible amount of effort here and that has to be appreciated.

I was disappointed that you didn't cut open balls that flew excessively offline (or simply didn't show them to us?). And you didn't talk at all about float testing-- I believe those big misses could be mitigated if we removed the most out-of-balnce golf balls.

All I found out is I have am playing the right ball the last 20 years. Staying with Titleist even though I so wanted to play VICE which have the coolest apparel. But, we see there is a lot of gear effect as the balls themselves have flaws that can exaggerate our errors. Will but TP5x in the bag for Windy days and will be buying Snell MTB's or Mizuno JPX's for hitting into my net. I guess being a Mizuno man, I will play everything Mizuno except my golf ball. DAMN!!!! I can only imagine what this will do for ball development and this should be done every time new models come out. AWESOME Review. Thanks for all your hard work guys. So appreciate the time and effort you put in.

I expect Snell and Srixon (ad333) will see an increase in sales. I tried the 333 today and wow I think that is going to be a great ball for me. Driver distance was quite consistant and longer for me. The putter feel was good and a little green practice time will have the touch right back where I need it. Wedge shots were spot on also. I never even considered this ball before and the price is reasonable . Lots of good info here thanks for the hard work.

    Learnt a lot:
Robot testing, exactly the same club head speed and centre contact every time. Wow, I am shocked at the dispersion figures. I always thought golf balls with the state of the art manufacturing these days were practically perfect. Add the wind and it’s no wonder pros with their high spin speeds miss so many fairways. So it’s not just their swing.
I’m known for being short but very straight. So it’s not just my swing.
Explains why so many pros not under contract use Pro V1x.
    Great work.

Great video great data. I would say the TP5x outperformed the Pro V1x in more categories but I get overall it seems to be better dispersion per robot testing. but with a human factor involved IMO the Pro v1x would spin more in regard to sidespin and back so mishits I feel is where most amateurs should look to a ball as spin kills sometimes. You cannot go wrong of course with a tp5x or pro v1x. I would take the tp5x.

A lot of great data here. I would add (so that people truly understand the wedge story) that a full swing PW should generate quite a bit of spin regardless of the ball while 20-50 yard pitches and some shorter chips can reveal big differences in balls and how much they spin / how they perform. I love hitting the one hop and stop pitch shot, but there are balls that you really can't pull that off with. You can of course play those shots differently and play for the ball to run out. This type of consideration is why a lot of people suggest to fit balls from the green to the tee rather than from the tee to the green.

Great Job! I use the Titleist Tour soft yellow. $35 a dozen. 2 piece ball. I played 3 balls on a par 3 course this weekend. Titleist tour soft, pro v 1 (new model),and the Titleist avx.
All performed well. Pro v1 stuck the green but was always short. Avx was awesome great flight and less than 5 ft from pitch mark. But the Tour Soft felt the best, was the longest and straightest, easy to control. When it came down to putting the Pro v1 was best by far. I am a 20 hcp with a 96 mph club swing. I have all Callaway clubs but will never try their balls again.

The ball manufacturers might be embarrassed at the results. This will never happen.
All balls are made of the same urethane cores at different durometers (density) and the same vinyl covers. Balls used to be graded by the color of the ball number. Red or black. Then balls became a very profitable comodity. So much advertising because of the volume involved. Example: I lost 5 balls on a new course played yesterday.

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  4 года назад +2

We answered this in the video Edgar. Bridgestone asked us only to test their balls at the swing speeds they were designed for. It means we can't average the data across three driver swing speeds, as each ball only took part in one or two of the categories.

@@todaysgolfer for the same reason as testing pro V1 or any other ball. They claim they are tour level performance and recommend different balls for certain golfers. I don't see how it would skew the results at all. It lets consumers decide if the ball they are playing is right for them. All manufacturers make the same claims if you read the packaging. There was an opportunity to test claims and show real data but instead the wishes of the manufacturer to hold that back were met, rather than those of the consumer.

Yes every brand targets golf balls at different players, as you rightly say.
Bridgestone, though are the only one to target certain balls at certain swing speeds.
Why would a consumer want to see how it performs outside of that speed? It's not optimised to do so. And Bridgestone make no secret of that.
It just wouldn't make sense for a consumer to buy a ball thats not targeted at their speed.
