- In today's video, we meet Cheryl and work in her sewing studio for the first time! Harry Potter House Pride week is coming up, so we're making a Harry Potter DIY to celebrate. I asked Cheryl to help me create the best sewing pillowcase tutorial possible using directional fabric because directional fabric requires a few more steps to make it look its best. Therefore, in this video we will take the standard Magic Pillowcase tutorial (or burrito pillowcase) and update it for directional fabric in order to celebrate Harry Potter House Pride Week. This sewing pillowcase tutorial requires more fabric, an extra seam, and a few extra minutes, but the results speak for themselves. :)

Note: All of the Harry Potter house fabric was purchased at Joanns, but this was before the pandemic. They have unfortunately discontinued it, but the do put out new house lines every year. Here is a link to their current ones: www.joann.com/search?q=Harry%...
For the sparkly accent pieces, I bought from this Etsy's shop "Glimmer" collection: www.etsy.com/shop/AACottonCre...

If you like this video, please give us a thumbs up! And be sure to tell us, do you think the effort is worth it? Or which Ravenclaw colors do you prefer?
This was great. Thanks sew much. I’m making pillow cases for my great grandson with Scooby Doo and the whole gang going one way. He picked out the fabric, he’s 4. I really needed this. I love your easy down to earth bloopers and all. I’m not into Harry Potter so any fabric you like is fine with me.😊
Love this video! Perfection! The expert and the novice. Brilliant. Thanks!❤
Thank you for watching!
Great, great, great tutorial. I have watched so many and no one explains it as clearly as you both. Thank you!!!!!! This should be the only pillowcase tutorial on this site.
Thank you so much for the compliment! We’re so glad you found it useful! Thank you for watching!
Ironing is my favorite part of sewing
such a perfect birthday for the Harry Potter fans in my family♥any fabric pillowcase or even flannel is a great gift for the person who has everything (and napkins as well)! thanks for sharing this great sewing idea!
Loved your tutorial on directional fabric. Great job explaining every step.Thank you.
Very easy to follow tutorial! You guys did an amazing job of explaining everything in detail! Do you think you’d be interested in creating a tutorial on sewing Euro pillows?
Perfect directions!!! My pillowcase looks fantastic!!!!
That's so good to hear LaTanya! We'd love to see what they look like over on our Instagram if you're willing to share! I love seeing people's fabric choices. :)
Good!!
How can I modify for a toddler pillow? Thank you! Wish you had shown the front and back completed.
This is a great tutorial. Would love to know your tips for making a British style (with the envelope enclosure) pillowcase using this method.
Thank you for watching! We've had a few people request this actually, so we'll be sure to post an updated video as well. :)
i absolutely LOVE harry potter
There are some good instructions and hints in the video. I know you wanted to use that particular fabric, but it wasn’t the best choice for a directional print video since it is a MULTI-directional print that makes it difficult to see just what the correct direction actually is.
Thank you for watching and for the constructive feedback! I’ll remember that for future project instructions! The way I decided was up was by the animal logos-not the words. I wanted the animals to look right side up.
LOVE the tutorial! Agree with earlier replies it is the clearest to learn from.
Please clarify the seam allowance width that you calculated the tutorial lengths by.
Also, any thoughts re using a serger for the inner portion of the French seams, and would that affect the calculations for seam allowance widths in the overall pattern?
Thanks again!
Hi from Lima Peru, love your video, thank you for the tips to buy fabrics . Just one question , the second sew for the French seam is also 1/4” or 3/8 “ , I do not have that clear, to encase the seam allowance .
What about pillow cases with the inner flap. That’s how they are in Australia and Britain, I don’t like them without that inner piece
Was a good example!what are euro pillows?
Is there a way to make a flap with directional fabric
fabric stores may ot make a cut of less than 1/4 yard
Cheryl, we pronounce our names the same way!!
Can you achieve this with one yard of fabric that’s directional?
Unfortunately no.You do need to plan on about 1 1/4 yard if you want the pattern to run right-side up and not sideways.
How big do I need to cut the directional fabric for a king size case? 20x36 is what the finished case measurements.
I haven't made a pillowcase that large, but it depends on how much ease you want for your pillow. You would need to add an amount for the seam allowance (not sure what size you're using), and then maybe add 2-3 extra inches for ease so you can get the pillow in and out. I'd LOVE to see the finished product though. :)
i am never happy with mine i not as good as my mom
Sorry guys just not a fan of your camera angle it’s better if you could stand at your table and have the camera over your head and behind instead of at a 90° angle. Just watch Vanessa and her channel is called the crafty Gemini and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Even Jennifer at shabby fabrics films with the camera above her head
And the reason that you probably are not a fan of rotary cutters is because the one you are using in the video is one of the cheaper brands. Treat yourself to a Martelli rotary cutter they make them for left handed and right handed.
And you are using the rotary cutter with the ruler in the wrong combination. The ruler would be to your right and then you would cut on the left. Or reversed depending on if you’re left-handed or right handed but the ruler should be sitting on the majority of the fabric not the other way around
Hello, thank you for the feedback; I did just go check out that channel, and I love the angle; however, I actually have no idea how she achieved that. I'm also willing to bet (given her channel success) that she has a lot more physical space (and money) than we are currently working with. You did just compare us to channels that have their silver play button and literally hundreds of thousands of subscribers more than us. We are doing the best we can with our budget and space options, but I would love to add that angle in the future. (Also, the tutorial we are currently filming has more angles based on the needs of the project, but I do think we have improved since this video.) 😀
Cheryl is also getting more comfortable with the rotary cutter in our newer videos as well--especially the interchangeable pillowcase one. Thank you for watching though!
@@createcraftcostume If you are in the United States, you could call B&H Photo who are in New York City and ask them what is needed to film like that
Shabby fabrics also has a Facebook page and they are pretty good at responding to messages so you could even send them a message and ask what they are using
I don’t think it’s very expensive
In that meantime whoever was filming you just has to stand opposite you and that would be a lot easier for us to see what you are doing
And Martelli has Sales every so often and treat yourself to their ergonomic rotary cutter. it takes a bit getting used to but it makes a world of difference. I started off with the same rotary cutter that you used in this video and I had just as many difficulties
@@dcwatashi I have never heard of those rotary cutters, but now I want to check them out!
And in our current set up, no one is filming us. We are using a tripod that is attached to the table while the camera runs. But looking into other tripod options is certainly an idea for the future.
@@createcraftcostume well Vanessa who runs that RUclips channel called the crafty Gemini when she does her Wednesday tutorials her husband films her from the front but she has a tripod with a canon camera behind her at an angle and so sometimes you can see how her set up is
Oh yes you will get a kick out of those Martelli rotary cutters they are totally different but it’s really good for people who have arthritis. And I guess it would be good preventative right?
I waited for one of their sales last year and purchased one of their cutting mats. What a game changer I hardly have to use any extra rulers plus I bought one of their nonslip rulers again a dealbreaker
@@createcraftcostume Here is a link on how to replace the blade and clean it out I just wanted to send this first and then I’ll find another video for you
