Jean I’m so glad I found your tutorial I have seen lots of tutorials explaining how to cut directional fabric but I couldn’t figure it out tell I found you I’m also a visually person, thank you so much.
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching me;)
Very cool. Every video I've seen they are not directional. Glad you did it.
Thanks for this video. Glad to see you back🌷
Thank you! Like I said, I have not seen EVERY tutorial, but I didn't think anyone really described it
I have made several of these pillowcases for children in the past. Thank you for bring this to my attention. I’m going to make more and donate them to our women’s shelter. They have a lot of children that come in with nothing to their name. I think these might bring them a little joy.
How nice of you to donate! These would put a smile on some deserving youngsters faces! :)
Thank You, Thank you, Thank you for this great video! I am a visual learner and I appreciate this video very much! I made a few pillowcases using directional fabric and I kept wondering how come they looked funny. Now, I know why! The problem is now solved!
One thing all the instructions seem to lack is how to cut directional prints so the print does not end up "on its side"...that always trips me up.
Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I drove myself crazy trying to figure out the yardage at the store. For a much easier stacking/rolling method, try this order- cuff piece right side up, then body right side up, then the trim piece ironed and raw edges to the top. Roll up the body and then bring the cuff up and around the rolled body. Pin in place, sew and turn and finish as you show. Super easy and easier to see the pieces, with no flipping the roll over. Try it!
Thank you for that! My goodness....YOU should have been doing the tutorial:) LOL!
I love this pillowcase. My grandson and great granddaughters will love their new pillowcases. Thank you so much.
Thank you! I like the way I got the proper direction of the pattern! :)
Jean Truelove I think you did a wonderful job explaining it all. Thanks.
Thank you for this video. I found it very informative. I am making pillow cases to match a quilt I just completed and have an issue with the directional print. This is exactly what I needed to learn. I will probably do a decorative top stitch on my accent strip to hold it down flat as I know the recipient doesn't even own an iron and they will most likely lay in her dryer for a week at a time. I love the idea of making the French seams to seal in the raw edges instead of just serging them. I hadn't thought of doing that. It is so much neater and should last a lot longer too.
Thanks Jean. I was thinking of making pillow cases for my grand-daughters. I can now follow your video to get my directional fabric going across properly. Now off to the fabric store!
Then my job here is done! LOL!
Jean, I made quite a few of these in different characters for little girls and boys. I donated them to the emergency room at the local hospital so it would comfort the kids and then they could take them home...the nurses said it was a big hit.
What a lovely idea! I've made tons and either given or sold them! A nice present for someone!
Jean you cracked me up - you went into a long explanation of what a burrito pillowcase is only to say 'but I'm not making that' - please don't ever change! You are one of the very few RUclipsrs who I allow notifications for when you upload.
I know...I actually looked back and thought, "well that was 5 minutes of my babbling along and waffling about what I am NOT GOING TO MAKE!!" LOL!!! LOL!! Thanks for bearing with me! :)
@@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory LOL! 'Bear with you'? Are you kidding I think you're wonderful!
You are so sweet! :)
Yay - tutorials are back!
Now I'm awaiting the Bargello project/tutorial with great anticipation.
I've never been enticed by the "bargello" quilt designs that much either, but I'm excited to 'get my feet wet'!
Oh no....I really don't want to do the bargello, but I am committed now......or maybe someone should 'commit' me!! LOL! I will do it however,; so much Pressure!! LOL!
Ah geezzz....it STILL sounds VERY hard!! But I have said I will do one, and ONE I will do! LOL!
Excellent, you kept me from ruining fabric and hurting my brain trying to figure that out, ty for sharing
You can do it Theresa:)
I love your tutorials and miss your quilt tutorials. You always make it so easy to follow. Have a blessed day.
Sometimes I find it a pain to have to translate what I do in my everyday life, here in my little sewing room, pottering around, onto FILM! I'm just a tired housewife trying to have some fun!
YES! THIS (40") is the measurement I have been trying to find so I can create my (horizontal-directional) pillowcases! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Glad it was helpful Sheri:)
Oh it’s so pretty. I love the colors. Thank you. Can’t wait till the next one Jean.
Thanks Vera!:)
Love Everything You Do
Aw thanks!
I never thought of doing it that way, thank you Jean, Another great tutorial...going to do my next one like this..
Makes a bit more sense to me! Thank you Betty! :)
Love your anchor pillow case
Thanks so much Teresa! :)
I am going to have to try that. You make it look so easy. Great tutorial Jean. Thank you!
Super easy! Have a go, Deb!
I loved the pillowcase.Ilove watching. You make my day.Have great week.
Thank you very much! I appreciate that !
This is great! Thank you so much! I love all your work!
Thank you so much! :)
Thank you!! This is exactly what I asked for!!!! So glad I found you!!
OH! I'm so pleased this helped you out! Those funky 'vertical' cases are a thing of the past!! LOL!
Jean you are one smart lady. .As hard as I tried I could not figure it out. I could have used this tutorial last year when I made pillowcases for Christmas gifts.
Seriously!! Am I the ONLY one who has figured this out!?!?!? It took just a bit of 'visual wrangling' and then I got it! Well now you know! :) Thanks for watching me!
Wow look at this quality stitch beautiful
Thank you!
I agree withyiu Jean, novilty pillow cases should run with the flow .
Yes, to my eyes, it works!
@@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory when you showed Your Pillow case, I LOVED IT. it just Looked Right.
THANK YOU JEAN FOR YOUR WONDERFUL VIDEOS.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
Jean....Thank you so much for this great tutorial! I have lots of one-way novelty fabric that I now know how to use for pillowcases. I made one for a friend, who’s having surgery, with perfect “hugs/friends” fabric. Without this tutorial, I wouldn’t have been able to use it. I love having you in my sewing room. 😀. Keep up the good work.
I'm so please you found me! Thanks Mary, for taking time to watch and I'm glad this tutorial helps!
That really makes sense to me Jean. I love that idea, thanks.
Glad it makes sense!:) I got there in the end!
Thanks for the tutorial Jean.. I love it !! Keep em' coming 😉❤
Thanks Charlene! ;) So you liked this one?!?!
Absolutely Jean.. I want to make each of my granddaughters one.. they all like something different and changing a pillow case fabric is so much cheaper then buying and changing all the bedding styles. 😊
Beautiful idea love this, Thank you
Thank YOU! :)
I meant cushion covers with overlap at back. That different to flap. French seam is the way I would do case, Jean. It's a nice gift
Love French seams! Nice and neat! :)
Thanks, Ms. Jean! I enjoy watching all your tutorials, even though I am not actually a quilter (yet!). I made a couple of very pretty designer-looking sets of standard/queen and King sizes in a directional fabric for a recent Christmas gift, and now just finished a couple of really cute set of pillowcases that were also directional ("Thomas & Friends" and "Paw Patrol" licensed character prints). These are for my soon to be four year-old grandson's bed. I just adjusted the sizes required for a toddler-size/travel size 14x20 pillow and then followed your directions). I really like the way the design on the fabric flows across the beds so well by having the cuffs/accent trim located on the opposite side of the bed for each pillowcase in the set. Welcome to your new home! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I look forward to watching more fun and informative videos once you are all settled in.
So pleased you watch me ! Thank you Tina:)
Jean, totally agree with you on the way you cut it!!!! You really thought it out. . Thank you and Blessed Thanksgiving🍗🍗🍗🍗🍗🍗
Thank you! It was bugging me...so I came up with what I came up with! Thank you and you also have a lovely family time!
These look fantastic and I'll be making some of these. Even though I am from the UK and we do have pillow case with the folding, so you can't see the actual pillow🤷♀️. I will make these pillow anyway. I love the fabric, looks great. Thank you 😀
Now I know how to do a french seam! thank you, Jean!
So you didn't know before this!?!?? SO cool that I taught something! !! LOL!! Thank you Lois, for letting me know!
It called Housewife case and regular case in UK. Other case is Oxford which is bigger and more bucks, Jean
Welcome back!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Good prezzie idea, Jean. Yes, we do in UK make slips with flap and cushion covers as well like that
Yes, when I lived in the UK we had them like that
This issue came up today with a student I'm teaching to sew. She has a novelty print and we cut it the standard way. Then I got to thinking later I might find something on U Tube to show me how to make them going across. Thanks so much you did a wonderful job on this and it's just what I was needing.
Well then, there you go! Thanks for tuning in and finding out a way it can be done! That is exactly WHY I tried to figure it out! It was annoying me when I would make lovely pillowcases.....that tended to 'stand on their heads' to be viewed!! LOL! Thanks again Nancy for watching me!:)
Thank you !
You're welcome Melissa:)
Very nice Jean!!
Thank you Susan!
I love your tutorials! You bring such joy and fun into everything you do. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! God bless.
Thank you! I enjoy sewing so much and just like showing the (quirky, long winded and a bit all over the place) way I do things! :)
Great Job.
Thanks Rosetta!
Thank you so much for this tutorial Jean! Found you just in time! I just made my 1st couple of pillowcases for my grandchildren and I was wondering how to make this method work for the directional novelty prints! Brilliant! Just subscribed to your channel! Hugs from Texas!
So pleased you found it! I was always slightly annoyed at the up and down~ ness of the other way! So I came up with the side to side ~ ness~~ LOL!!
Happy Thanksgiving! I get your idea and I thank you. Blessings.
Thank you so much! I'm so pleased you are following along! Have a lovely evening! :)
@@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory Thank you!
Awesome pillow case Jean. I really love your chose of co!ors. The pattern is cute too! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!☺
Thank you and right back at you! :)
Good job 👍
Thank you Grace! :)
Oxford can do more with it like double flange and mitred corners on flange which look really smart. Housewife is cute, though. Pillowcases an entire scene of their own. Love 'em
👍🏼Great idea! I’m going to make these as gifts! Cool project and not time consuming during the busy holiday time...but a genius idea I can do with my free time! I love your ideas. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Super! These are so quick and easy! Have a lovely holiday!
it better than zips. I always do cushion covers with that flap
Thank you Jean!
You are most welcome Marianne:)
Great thank you
Perfect! I’m sewing a body pillow cover and I am going to try to put a cuff on both ends… if I can figure out how that whole burrito roll works…
You can do it!
@@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory it turned out wonderful, did not need to burrito fold being open on both ends, my mom loves it 🥰🥳
I'm totally doing this for my granddaughter for Christmas. I love how easy you make your directions. Have you ever done a floor pillow?
I've done very LARGE pillows...does that make a 'floor pillow'? LOL! I suppose you just keep stuffing and stuffing! And I suppose I would do an INNER pillow (stuffed) and then an OUTER pillow (with a zipper) for cleaning!?!?!? Hmmmm...is that what I'd do?!?! LOL!
Well kind of. I have seen them before made with 3 or 4 bed pillows. Kids lay on the floor with them.
OH! Those ones! That you insert a bed pillow into and they kind of roll out to form a bed type of thing! I have seen them
Very very pretty Jean thank you, I have been off RUclips for a while hope to join your block party and his year😊 have a Blessed night
Very pleased you will be joining us :) Thank you!
Your making me hungry. I love cheese rice and bean burritos!! Lol
LOL!! LOL!!
I'd like to see how to make a pillowcase with two separate pieces of fabric. I have a yard of fabric but it's directional. So the design will be sideways. How could I cut it and sew one big piece and make the pillowcase like this? I hope that makes sense.
Love making pillowcases and yes is great...thank you Jean...you're always inspiring to me..Happy Thanksgiving!! Are you cooking for the family??? Lots of food and fun!!
Thank you ~ these are so easy and quick! :) I'll be cooking for the 5000 ~ although for over 30 years I did that every day for my large family!
Thanks so much for this. I was avoiding directional fabric for pillow cases to avoid this issue. So if I am following you, for one pillow, you need 1.25 yards of the directional fabric?
Yes, I think my son and I just figured it that 1 and a quarter yards would work fine for the body of the case...perhaps that is a few inches over even. (If you've followed me you will know by now that I am USELESS at math...I just wing it most of the time ~ you want math, go to another tutorial! LOL! But my stuff does generally work out! LOL!
I dont like having an outside seam, sticking out on the band.
You cut the fabric into 2 pieces for the body of the pillowcase, it will have the design going correct on the front and back.
Thank you ~ that would work! :)
... with buttons to close or if you donot want that hassle a press stud does the job, Jean
O.M.G. You did it. I could hug you. I've made several burrito-style pillow cases for Ryan's Cases for Smiles, and yes, all the novelty fabrics go sideways. That's the more economical way, though, since you use less fabric. I never bothered to try to calculate how to turn the fabric the other direction. So HUGE thank you! I love the accent strip too. Question: This one appears to be for a standard size pillow. Do you happen to know the measurements for Q or K size pillows?
Thank you! So I'm thinking....if the size of a King Size pillow is 20" x 36"....you would need to make the piece 40" along the selvege edge and then cut it at, what, 31" or 32" width wise with the design going sideways, because then you add the cuff to bring it up to 37" or so?!?!?! I think that makes sense to me.....does it you!?!?! I know. Get a pillow and lay the fabric out on it and then cut!! :) LOL! Let me know how it works out!! LOL!
I have one yard of directional fabric, will this work? Thank you
Thank you so very much, much appreciation to this tutorial, saving it! I have been searching for a long time. It’s always made me crazy when seeing direction fabrics turned for such applications
Glad it helped! It bothered me seeing that too:)
Love this and came in very handy for me. But can you tell me how much fabric to buy? I did it but I ended up with a lot of extra fabric because I wasn't sure how much to buy. Much appreciated. Love your videos.
Glad it was helpful Julie!! For the two directional cases (just the body of the cases) you would need 2 1/2 yards (you'll have a few inches left over. That's because you are cutting (for one case) one piece at 40" (a yard being 36")....so erring on the side of caution, get a few more inches of fabric. Of course, for the band and the accent you need additional fabric, like I said in the video:)
@@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory Perfect. Thank you!
Can this pillowcase be made king size, if so what are the measurements ?
Yes, you would just cut (instead of the 27" about 36") SIDEWAYS with the selvedge at the left (or right). But still cut the 40" of length. It is a bit funky but if you watch the video at that part you will see what I mean!
Yes Indeed!…thanks for the video, yours is the bestest!…now for a quick question,...when buying directional fabric for this style pillowcase, I’m thinking(scary thought right there!), one would need to buy at least 41” wide, not your typical 1 yard?…at least for the body size?…again, Great video, so glad I subscribe!❤️😁
Thank you for taking time to watch! I'm thinking....(VERY scary thought there!!:LOL!) that AS YOU LOOK AT THE FABRIC on the bolt, coming off the bolt, that the pillowcase is made from THAT cut (yardage wise), so YES, you would get about a yard and one quarter (just to be sure) cutting it LENGTHWISE and then constructing it. Hope this makes sense!! :)
Jean Truelove Perfect!
Question, If I want to use flannel fabric, should I increase the cut size and inch or two to allow for shrinkage, or should I wash the fabric first?
I never prewash but as flannel DOES shrink quite a lot, I think your idea about making it larger and THEN washing is something that I'd do! I know a lot of people disagree, but I just LOVE working with 'fresh' fabric, right off the bolt. Two sides of that story also, but I'm sticking with mine!! LOL! All the best Sheri:)
@@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory I actually went ahead and washed it, lol. Seems to have came out just fine, just a little additional ironing.
Good for you:) Now all that shrinkage is gone...but that extra ironing...yuck!! LOL! LOL!
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
nice
Thanks Roxanne:)
Couldn’t you make front and back separately then do French seams on 3 sides?
Absolutely! I just find it easier to work with the fold of the fabric and just do the two sides
But you could make both sides go the same way instead of upside down.
Thanks for that dcwatshi!! LOL!! I think you explained that better than I could have! :LOL!
just made 2 this way.
Super!! You go:)
I thought all pillowcases were made like that!
I´m with you: The ornaments shouldn´t lay or stand on their heads. A lot of people don´t take care of this when sewing handbags or quilts - so terrible.
It always bothered me whenever my pillowcases were sideways... they were FINE vertically, but that's not how a pillow goes! :)
Pin go in and don’t place your pins in per
