Beautiful way love it. Made one for a veteran in nursing home where I worked. He cried so hard that day cause it was made out of material.for air Force. He wouldn't let no one bother it. He passed and that was the pillow they used for him. He requested it to be that way. What fun it was to make it for Burrell. We called him pops. Thank you for showing and sharing this video. Blessing to you. From shreve Ohio.
Thank you for sharing that very touching story with us. We are glad that you enjoy this project and that you've been able to encourage others with your talents. 🤗 💖 -Michelle
Have made many! Its a quick easy staple gift for me! think you are the most excited I’ve ever seen you in one of your many awesome videos Jen! A genius project for sure!
I work at a local women & children's shelter & we have a person that makes this style pillowcase & donates pillows & the pillowcases so that every person that comes gets a brand new pillow & pillowcase that they're able to keep when they leave. It's truly such a blessing!
Hi Jenniffer, this is Carlos, in San José, Costa Rica. I have sewn myself already several sets of pillowcases following your instructions. However I hadn't taken the time to thank you for sharing these instructions. Additionally, I want to mention that you easily transmit peace of heart. And, sometimes, when I feel a bit more sensitive, my eyes get a bit wet when you talk about making the difference in other people's life with warm details. What would this world be like if *all* humans had a tenth of your warmth in their hearts?
Thank you very much for your kind words, Carlos. We're happy that this project has inspired you. Thank you so much for your heartfelt comment! -Michelle
Thanks, Jennifer. I learned to make this pillowcase in my Home Economics class in the 8th grade. I’m 71 so you knows that’s over 50 years ago! That was my favorite class so I took it again in 9th grade at a different school. I owe a debt of gratitude to those teachers. Those wonderful days are gone. No more gender specific classes any longer.
Thank you for your free tutorials. So many folks have forgotten about those sewist who can not afford the materials they need for a craft and then the cost of instructions too. We appreciate your generosity in sharing your talent and knowledge so very much, you will never know.
Thank you so, so much for taking the time to share this kind comment and show your appreciation! We love being able to share our creativity for free on RUclips :)
Thanks for sharing your wonderful instructions to make those beautiful pillows. I have made one with Red Xmas Trucks material for my grandson who is 10yrs.
I wanted to tell you that you moved me greatly. I quickly learned two things about you. You are incredibly passionate about your work. .. joy and excitement emanate from you throughout the process. second observation I made about you was the passion in which had while speaking from your heart about the difference each one of us can make in the lives of others. So important now more than ever. Thank you so much for you and what you stand for. You are a breath of fresh air. May the world give to you what you gave to the world
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment, Bonnie. We really need to spread more love and kindness, and Jen is so good at doing that (as are you!). Thank you for watching and hope you keep watching and commenting.
Thank you for including the instructions to make French seams. It gives the pillow case a much more finished look. I love making these and you're right about what a great gift they can be. My best one was for a 5 year old in the hospital for a heart transplant. His nurse, my neighbor, was telling me about this little boy and how he loved the Incredible Hulk. I found the paper piecing pattern for the Hulk, made the square and pieced it into the center of the front of the pillow case. They told me his mom cried she was so happy and he loved the pillow case for his hospital bed (where he would be staying for some time.)
Love this tutorial. It's fun making pillowcases and this is a new one for me. Can't wait to get started on some for my grandchildren. It's also a great way to use up scraps. When I buy fabric for quilts I always buy too much and this is a way to make use of the leftovers as well as making matching pillowcases for the quilts. I'm 69 years old and have been sewing since I was 11. Isn't it wonderful to still learn at my age? Thank you!
That is so great to hear Whimsical Heart! Thank you so much for the kind comment. We are so glad to know that we have something interesting to teach even after all of your years of sewing!
Jennifer! God bless you and your warm, loving heart! I appreciate that you mention that faith inspires you. I’m so grateful for your wonderful free videos and charitable suggestions. Our church has a sewing ministry-quilts, hospice bibs, baby items donated to local crisis pregnancy/women and children centers and a large hospice center, NICU. I agree that this world needs more light, love and kindness shown to everyone-God-willing we can be examples of Christ’s love ❤
I had my Grand daughter (8 years old) do this for her first sewing project. It was very easy for her and she ended up making another one for her little sister. They just loved them.
Stacey Romig That’s awesome! So many kids aren’t even taught sewing basics, like hemming or embroidery, anymore! I’m sooo grateful that I had my grandmothers and my mom to teach me to sew. Something I will always treasure. During college, I made my own dresses a lot, as I couldn’t afford to buy them. Later, I made dresses for my kids’ daughters, including First Communion dresses & Baptism gowns for my nephews. They were cherished gifts, & the girls & my sister-in-law loved them. Something to pass down, plus they liked that they were unique, just for them! I even made matching dresses for a few girls, & taught some basic sewing in my Brownie troop. We used to learn some things in Home Arts, but they don’t have that anymore! Mom learned in 4H Club and from her mom. My cousin’s even made their own prom dresses! Mom used sheets that were on sale and made beautiful matching ruffled bedspreads & curtains for my room! I always hoped I would have a daughter to pass them down to, or maybe a grandaughter. No such luck, but I’m 50 yrs. old now, & I still have those sets! I remember the many hours Mom spent hand-making the ruffles (I had a full-size bed!), using no pattern at all, just her design. Priceless!!!
@@JaimeDornanLady My mom made curtains out of colored sheets too! We couldn't afford to buy ready made curtains. She taught us to hem, darn, and make fringes by pulling the strings out. She also taught us to knit, but I didn't take to that to well. I learned to crochet in high school and found my love. We made aprons in "Missionettes" at my church. They still have Missionettes, but they do useless crafts and nothing to help missionaries or shut-ins. :( And of course, Home Ec in junior high school. Life was a lot different, yes?
Hi Jennifer! I love all your videos/tutorials! I'm (HOH) Hard of Hearing, I have friends who are like me & deaf friends as well & love it that you have Closed Caption on your videos, so, we can read what you are saying on your videos. Thank you for taking HOH & Deaf people in consideration when making your videos. It is deeply appreciated. ☺
Tonya Lucz Bless you, I'd never notice that SF had gone the extra expense of CC. Most people think using Google's captioning tool takes care of this, but it doesn't. Try it (you, the hearing person, not the HOH commenter), and see exactly what I mean. It's a hot mess. Hilarious, though. See how many sounds are labeled as music, it's cray-cray. Thank you.
tonya lucz I had no idea that those who make the videos pay to provide closed captioning! So lovely of Jennifer and Shabby Fabrics to do that. “Regular “ CC can be really funny but not helpful 😝
I made my first pillow case today following this tutorial as I went. Thank you so much for the excellent instructions and beautiful job explaining the process. I've never sewn before three weeks ago when I took my first quilting lesson. I was able to follow the instructions easily because of having used a ruler and rotary blade cutter. I matched up my fabric edges, brought my accent strip to perfect point match and off I went sewing this wonderful item. I did make the French seams per the instructions and they came out perfectly. I'm in my 60's and I have to tell you, I'm stoked!
If you decide to venture into sewing clothing, join the patterns for pirates Facebook group. Their patterns are super easy and so much support in the group for any questions.
I'm Proof that a real guy can use a sewing machine too. This is one of my first projects and thanks for the helpful french seam techniques. Next project is curtains for the camper Im building. Finding sewing machines easy..its like using an electric scrollsaw ( Im a woodworker). In fact Bosch's first portable jigsaw used a sewing machine mechanism. So Guys..go for it.
Yep, as a builder and sewer, I agree that the two have real similar engineering. Although, this is a very basic sewing project, and the more complex engineering comes in with clothing, pockets and the like. Like building a garden bed vs a cabinet or a house. But the similarities have me thinking that all these rad sewing ladies would probably be a quick study to learn building!
My Dad was a carpenter, everything from houses to bridges, but he could also use a sewing machine better than my Mom. Not that he ever made a dress but lots of other projects.
even though the video says a great gift from a grandmother or aunt..maybe Ill make a pair for for my girlfriend. By the way..mine are stone washed demin with a light brown leather trim. I made the 27" piece in two parts so the back of my pillowcase is a soft cotton ticking pattern. That way I can sleep on the soft side rather than denim and yet have the denim for a camper bed accent pillow.
The stone washed denim with leather trim sounds awesome Rick Farrow! It was a great idea to have a soft and a decorative side! So glad you liked the tutorial- thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment!
Rick Farrow - It’s years later, I know. Any chance you could post a photo of your brilliant pillow idea? The denim/leather/ticking must look just fabulous together!
Wow Rick, great idea.gonna try that ! Thank You for sharing. I really like how she explained everything, step by step. Also the camera shots were great too!
Years and years ago I used a pattern like this to make a lots of pillowcases for Project Linus and quilts of valor and for family. I needed this pattern again and couldn't find it. I'm so glad that you did this video it's the most well done one that I have ever seen. I will come back to it time and time again
Thank you so much for your kind words! Thank you so much for watching and commenting- we are so glad our tutorial helped you re-discover this awesome pillowcase!
Thanks for this great tutorial! I wanted pillowcases for my European pillows but they seemed expensive and not available at stores in my area. I adjusted the size for the main piece to 26" x 52" (the width is 26" folded). It worked out beautifully. I used organic cotton flat sheets and made 6 beautiful pillowcases for under $20! I also loved your idea for making these for gifts and for shelters. Thanks again!
You changed my life six years ago with this demo. I began sewing at age nine but didn’t know what to do w my talents. I’ve made plenty to give away and gifted many. I decorate my house with this technique for extra throw pills for bedrooms.!such depression I was in at that time and you gave me something to do to think about others. Thank you Jen! Love you for all the patterns and ideas; and I’ve even bought fabrics from you. Xoxo
I've made some of these pillowcases for my Grandkids before, but this year, I chose flannel fabric. They turned out great and are perfect for the winter months. 😉
This is a great project! You can get pretty creative with it too, like using flannel fabric. Happy that you enjoyed this project and I think your Grandkids will love them again! Thanks for your comment! 😊 - Abby
really nicely done tutorial. I love the satisfaction of enclosing all of the seams! I find that some quick pressing after sewing the first step of the French seam ( not pressing it open but to one side if that makes sense ) makes it a bit easier prepare for sewing the final seam. less fiddling and and rolling I think.
Your tutorial is very nice...I liked the easy way to remember the measurements. Some ladies and I from my church made 72 pillowcases for an orphanage in the DR...we went one step further and embroidered the names of each child. They loved them and we got a bigger blessing than they did by making them for the children...All our fabric was donated from the congregation. Betty Schopperth, Papillion, NE
That is such a thoughtful and charitable project +Betty Schopperth! Thank you so much for sharing your story with us and for taking the time to watch our tutorial!
I just recently made a pillowcase for my granddaughter to match a quilt that I'm making. I wish I'd seen your video first, because you make it seem much simpler than the other ones that I watched. The measurements you give make it easier to cut the fabric, and the layout you show makes it much easier to sew. I may make some more for other people. Thanks.
Wonderful video, everything one needs to know yet done in a way that is mindful of the viewer's time. My pillow case turned out perfectly. Thank you! After I pulled the pillow case "through the tube" I added a row of top stitching on the open edge of of the trim piece to keep the cotton lying flat after washing.
@@ShabbyFabrics The top stitching is just a little help for busy parents that are not going to iron the pillow case. It was actually my surgeon husband's suggestion.
I need to tell you that it is such a pleasure watching your videos not only do you keep you instruction very understandable but I love the clarity of your voice - and the fact that you keep your nails plain and jewelry simple - this I find very much a distraction in others videos. Just finishing up a quilt for a relative of mine and wanted to re-watch you pillow case video as I have never done a French seam before. Little did I know that I was going to need some Kleenex when watching - the time in the video is 15:38 - The Power of a Gift - your emotion and compassion is unbeatable - I was in tears - I have decided that I am going to make a pillow case a month and every couple of months I am going to take them somewhere - such as a shelter or hospital where they will be very much appreciated. Thank you for giving me this idea - I think it is terrific. Keep up the good work and look forward to your next video.
Wow, thank you so much for your heartfelt comment, Patricia! We love making videos and know that people like you are watching. The gift of sewing or quilting for someone in need is so special and we love highlighting that! Thank you again for watching and for your extreme kindness!
I just thought I' would add, I took this class about four or five years ago and when we did the final seam and when you were struggling just a bit before you pinned the final seam, instead the teacher laid the pillowcase down and stuck a ruler up inside and slid it into the edge which pushed everything out to a sharper edge then we put he pin in, and it went pretty quick. You may or may not want to use the tip but just thought I'd nose in, love yoy and your classes.... craftynanc hoping to get craftier.
Jennifer I love watching not just you putting the projects together, but the pining and sewing the items. I don't believe it to be a waste of time. Specially when most of us who are watching the tutorial is doing the project with you. You project are so pretty.
Valerie Root as a sewer I appreciate it when I don’t have to attempt to fast forward over the ironing & sewing for basic sewing pieces. When it comes to tricky piecing, then it is helpful, even for a few more stitches than in this tutorial. Excellent tutorial!
Here I am again watching you make the magic pillow cases. My grandchildren, my husband and my adult children all love the specially made pillowcases. Thank you for teaching me!
This is one of the best sewing tutorials I have ever watched. I have not sewed in over 35 years, but I tackled this today and was very surprised at how easy it was to make--thanks to this WONDERFUL, THOROUGH AND WELL-MADE VIDEO FROM SHABBY FABRICS. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!
Here's a tip. If you are using a one-way print for the cuff, when pinning the cuff to body and trim, be SURE to turn the cuff fabric upside down. If you don't, the print will be upside down when you flip the bottom up, and the right side of the pillow case will be wrong. Trust me, this happened to me and there's no way you can feed all the fabric back into a tube to correct the problem. If in doubt, do a dry run with pins before sewing that seam. LOVE this technique, though!
@@franpol9026 ALWAYS pre-wash cotton. I don't even put it in my sewing room when I get new fabric, I immediately toss it in the laundry bag for washday!
@@franpol9026 If you are using 100% cotton, there could be shrinkage when you wash the pillowcase the first time. If you wash, dry and press the fabric first, what you sew is what you'll get, with no shrinking surprises later.
Just an after note .... if you press the ⅛" seam to one side prior to turning pillowcase right sides together it makes the final step of the french seam much easier.
I've made so many log cabin quilts, with leftovers, of course. Though the strips are 2-1/2 inches wide, I'm planning on using them for the "flange" trim. I agree with Jennifer: "whomever came up with this idea for making pillowcases is a genius." Thanks for the tutorial and showing me how to do a French seam. My 1st stop at your RUclips videos and I'm glad I did. :-) I'm also a strong believer in pinning.
+Susan Allen thank you so, so much for watching our videos and taking the time to comment! Glad we were able to help you learn how to do a French Seam!
I love you tutorials! I just wanted to mention how you touched my heart Jennifer, when you spoke about making and giving items for donation. I could see and feel how sincere you were and it warmed my heart. I have made pillowcases for veterans hospitals and homeless shelters for years and so glad you mentioned donating. I know donations make a difference not just to the recipient but to the donator. It is this type of kindness that will always make the world a better place! Thank you and happiness to you and yours always.
Marian Davis Two other good places to donate would be My Sister’s House (for abused women/children who have left/are hiding from abusive husbands! Often they leave and have nothing but the clothes on their backs!) or a hospice.
I started sewing when I was 8 and have been sewing for many years. I still love seeing different ways to do things. I am a visual learner so instructional videos are awesome. Great job.
Very nice tutorial. I can't wait to try this. You were so right when you commented on never underestimate the power of the love that goes along with a homemade gift.
The pair of pillowcases I made when my grandma went fabric shopping with me in 2009 are totally thread bare! This is a great reminder to make another set. The second set I made is getting old also.
Thank you Jennifer, this is so clever. I made quilts and now I will make pillowcases to match. How fun. I LOVE all of your tutorials and several are on my project list!
I made these a few years ago and forgot how. Saw this site and I've made 3 already, 6 more to go. So much fun. I made blankets for Children's Hospital and thought I'd put them in matching pillow cases. These are great and your instructions are perfect. Thank you so much! The hardest part is picking out the materials :) So many to choose from, so many ideas popping up at once. When I made mine, the material turned out to be 41" wide, once cut. It fits great! The body is 27" long x 41 inches wide, cuff 9" wide x 41" long and accent piece 3" wide by 41" long.
Thank you for your tutorials. I made pillow cases many moons ago ( 20+ years) and never thought of using a French seam. Thank you Your videos have inspired me to start sewing & quilting again. 😄🥰
I love this pattern, and I love all Jennifer Bosworth's tutorials! I've made several of these, and even added my grandkids names embroidered on the cuff... that extra touch made them extra special. Thank you Jennifer, for your awesome projects!
Love making this pillowcase, and have made several to donate for various causes. I would suggest that once the pillowcase is complete, sew the trim fabric in place on the right side with a 1/4 seam. This prevents the trim from not laying well once washed. I always iron this kind of a pillowcase, but some would not be inclined to do so. Sewing the trim in place will allow the un-ironed case to still look neat. : ) Great tutorial!
I learned this method from a "how-to" website a couple years ago, but it didn't mention trimming the French seam to 1/8 " and pinning it before doing the second run through the machine. Very glad to have those tips now! Usually I press the seam open, then after turning it inside out press it again to help get everything flat/ready for the final stitching.
I watched this tutorial a long time ago and have been making pillowcases for everyone. A hint on the fabric - you can take advantage of sales of end of bolts where the fabric is less than a yard long - look for fabrics 27 inches long or longer. Also save those pieces from other projects for the flange and cuffs. So much fun. Just had to watch this tutorial again, I just love how you explain each step so even a beginner can understand.
These fabrics are so sweet!! Our local hospital collects pillowcases, made this way, for their pediatric patients! As you say, there are many places that could use these pillowcases to cheer someone up :-) You mentioned shelters for women & children; often the children have nothing with them or anything to carry what they do have; a sweet, fun pillowcase can also be used to carry what they have. Such a lovely way to tell them that someone DOES care about them! thank you for sharing how to make these pillowcases!
What a lovely way to show people you care +Ellen Helms! Thank you so much for sharing this kind comment and thank you for taking the time to watch our tutorial!
This is the most perfect way for me to use many of the yards of fabrics I have accumulated over time ! Just an awesome method of construction. These are added to my Christmas gifts list ! Thank you so much. Tutorial was very good !
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a kind comment! It is a great way to use all of that extra fabric, and such special gifts! Let us know how your project goes! - Morgan
Jennifer and her staff are all awesome. I have purchased from them for years.. Haven't been able to lately, but quality and information and friendliness has always stood out. Beautiful job Jennifer, as always
Thank you for mentioning women’s and children’s shelters. We forget sometimes that we can help heal by simple handmade gifts of love and caring. You are special!🥰❤️👍👍
We really do forget sometimes, but simple reminders can help us to focus on what really matters. Thank you so much for watching and for being a special lady yourself.
I made the cutest Christmas pillows for my elderly aunt & uncle using this tutorial. I am teaching myself to sew and this really helped me with my confidence. I am going to use iron-on letters to personalize the cuff before I mail them out. I am now subscribed. Thank you so very much!
That is so awesome to hear! This project is great for building your skills and confidence in sewing! Thank you so much for subscribing and for taking the time to leave a comment!
Sullivan Homesteader You can also either embroidery a name on the cuff, or use fabric paint to write the name on the cuff! They even have glitter fabric paint that looks really nice to write a name with! Another thing to do is to take glitter fabric paint & outline parts of the fabric pattern to make it stand out more. If I did that, I would do it on the cuff, rather than using a lot of it on the pillowcase.
I'm making mine today. I bought Road Trip fabric to make them for our RV. Your instructions are excellent! Thank-You! I am also making the giant jelly roll tote for gifts. I am a new quilter and am loving it! Thank-you for making it so easy!
What!? Genius! I've never seen anything quite like this! I can't believe how beautiful these pillowcases are. I'm soooooo happy I found your channel today. It's Sunday after Thanksgiviing and I'm bushed from all the cooking, and I found your channel. I'm sitting in my comfy chair, drinking coffee, and I'm happy as a happy crafter could be watching you do all this fun stuff!!!
I made these for my Grandchildren for Christmas in there likes. Horses, puppies, deer, etc. the were so excited. Love these. Your video tutorial is fantastic. Thanks so much. 💕
This is such a fun and encouraging project for beginner-beginners. Although I made lots of mistakes w/ my first pillowcase, I learned a lot and it turned out well in the end. This project looks amazing and professional right away which is very confidence-building. Thanks to this great tutorial, each of my family members will be getting a beautiful pillowcase for Christmas!
You are SO right! This project is perfect for beginners because you get to practice several skills in one: measuring, cutting, and sewing! These pillowcases are so great and easy, too! Thanks for watching :)
I remember about 25 years ago my grandma sewed us all these same pillowcases and I always wanted to make them. She called it the “burrito method!” I’m so happy I found this tutorial. I’m going to pass this tradition down ❤
My mother used to make this kind of pillow case when we were kids. Your tutorial brought back a lot of good memories! thanks for the clear directions. I think I need to go make one for my mom!
+Craft Genie this technique has been around for so long- it is sweet that it reminds you of your mom! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment!
This was a wonderful tutorial. You have a very pleasant and appealing teaching style. I will be making many of these with favorite fabrics from my stash! Thanks for a great lesson!
You're so welcome! Thank you so much for watching and leaving such a kind comment! So glad you enjoyed the tutorial. Let us know how your projects go. - Morgan
I have watched many tutorials on this type of pillow case. Yours has been one of the easiest to follow. I love the 3x9=27 reference to remember the fabric sizes you need. The use of French seams in this project is perfect...no fray. Worth the couple extra minutes. Your tutorial was excellent. Your very good in front of the camera. I will subscribe. Hope to see more good things. Thank you
Love your tutorials, so easy to follow and your voice is pleasant to listen to. You don't have a million 'ums' and other such voice ticks. I am looking forward to trying this as I make my own lace trim either by tatting, crochet, or bobbin lace. Thanks RUclips for landing this gem in my suggested videos.
Thank you so much for leaving such a kind comment! We're so glad you like the video and will be making this project. Please do let us know how it goes. We love to see pictures and hear stories. - Morgan
Jennifer, you are an outstanding teacher. Thank you for making and sharing these free tutorials. I made four pillowcases for my great grandchildren. You sure made me look good and I took all the credit!! Well, almost all. 😂I finally did show them your video so they could see no matter how old we are, new skills can be a fun learning experience. I am so happy I found Shabby Fabrics. Just received my first order, table runner kit, today. Looking forward to continue learning from your talented and easy to follow tutorials.
Thank you Frances for the wonderful feedback. I will pass this on to Jen and our video team. They love to hear the wonderful compliments.Happy Quilting! -Kyla
I love your suggestion of donating a pillowcase to a shelter. When my granddaughter was in the hospital, she received a quilt. My daughter and I were so moved by such a generous gift. But honestly, thoughtful gestures; something like a pillowcase or a beanie hat for a newborn or a cancer patient would be equally treasured. Great idea, thank you.
Jennifer, This is an excellent tutorial! I had purchased a kit a few years ago and lost the pattern. I have now made several cases for Christmas gifts. You are right when you mentioned how a simple case can brighten a day! I do make them in pairs, just because...........So many novelty prints, so much fun to make! Thank you so very much for sharing this video! You are a wonderful teacher with all details. You were a GREAT help to me!!!
I have done this beautiful and easy pillow case, after I finished my Quilt I went along and put it inside with coordinated colors, two in one! Great idea
Jennifer, really enjoyed your video. I made some for my 2 year old granddaughter. Now my other grandchildren want their own. I will be busy since I have 5 grandchildren. Thank you and God Bless you.
Made a Christmas pillowcase for my granddaughter last year, and her mum couldn't take it off the bed until June without her whinging.(It had to be washed and dried in a day). So now both grandchildren have 2 each for the rest of the year as well. Such a great idea and superb tutorial. Thank you.
I always wanted to make my own pillow cases and now I can thank you so much for this tutorial it looks very easy and I will definitely give it a try thank you
Hello, so thrilled that I found your RUclips Channel! Since I’m new to sewing & quilting, I would love to see ALL the steps to making beautiful sewn items, including the ironing, pinning, etc. Thanks for sharing your time and creativity🥰🤗🤩😇💗
Thank you so much for joining us, and congrats on your sewing journey! :) Let us know if there are any specific projects/processes you'd like to see and we might make a video on it! - Morgan
SASKIA I loved the tutorial on the pillowcase. But what I loved the most was THE LOOK ON YOUR FACE WHEN YOU CAME TO THE END. It was priceless. Thank you
Thanks so much for this informative tutorial. I have 10 grandchildren and 2 greats. Can't promise they will all be getting them for Christmas but they have birthdays coming up too. Can't wait to get started!
Hi Barbara, That is music to our ears! Your grandchildren and great grandchildren are very lucky to have a loving and caring Grandma who enjoys sewing for them! I wish you a very Merry and Blessed Christmas, Jennifer and everyone at Shabby Fabrics
A very green sewer here. This is a great tutorial. Your auditory and visual instructions are precise and were easy to follow. I went with the French seam, and I don't regret it. It was worth a few extra minutes to impress the heck out of my family. Thank you!
J u have inspired me to make this for my mil just went into nursing home last week. Your beautiful words of bringing comfort to someone in need with a kind gesture has touched me . I Have stopped quilting during this difficult time but I’m gonna take out my “brother”tomorrow and make a thanksgiving pillowcase for her. I have everything I need. Thank you and God bless you. The timing of seeing this video is just what i needed ❤
I've made several of these...they are fun to make. I first saw a tutorial on Missouri Star Quilt Company and also on The Crafty Gemini. Thanks for sharing your tutorial...love the fabrics you used.
Thank you, Jennifer! I love your tutorial! Finally French seams explained so well...and with our very first grand baby here now, I think I will use the embroidery on the cuff idea! Thank you so much! Maybe Honey needs a monogrammed pillow!
Hi Brenda, That is so exciting to have a new baby in the house. So many wonderful reasons to sew for the little ones! And I'm much sure Honey would love a monogrammed pillow. I hope you have a blessed Christmas full of wonderful memories and plenty of laughter, Jennifer
Thank you so much for the detailed instructions. My seven year old granddaughter is wanting to sew on my machine. She has been hand sewing for about 6 mos while I machine sew. I think this will be a great first project. I cant wait to take her this weekend to pick out fabric. Thanks in advance for our fantastic weekend we will have.
This will be the perfect beginner project for her, and so much fun to pick out her own fabrics! We're so excited you'll be doing this together. Let us know how it goes! - Morgan
I made these couple years back for me . I love them . You are so great with the instructions . I appreciate that very much. So now it’s Christmas time almost I have six ladies I have to get a gift for. And I think this is a great idea. The only thing is I have to make them king-size. I’m sure I’ll figure it out. I don’t so much I just make small gifts like potholders bowl cozies. So on and so on. I appreciate your tutorials. Thank you so much for sharing them.
That is very lovely. We are glad you enjoy this delightful project. We actually have the King-size measurements available on the Free Download here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video?search=magic+pillow Please let us know how those pillowcases go for you. Thanks for watching! ✂️ 💖 -Michelle
This is a great tutorial, thank you! I have made several of these before and I always tried to sew an 1/8th of an inch instead of doing the 1/4 and trimming it down, WOW, that makes so much more sense!! lol thank you!! One other thing I do is go ahead and do a top stitch on the trim to keep if from turning upward after it is washed, makes it look a little better and it doesn't take long, just sew it down before you sew the sides together. Thanks again, I loved this tutorial. Sharon
Hi Sharon, That is a great idea about the top stitch on the trim! Thank you for sharing that. There is always so much we can learn from each other. Thanks for watching the RUclips tutorial and taking the time to leave a comment. I hope you have a blessed holiday season, Jennifer
When you say you added a top stitch to the trim, do you mean you put stitching on the trim at the bottom, only on the trim - or do you top stitch the bottom of the trim to the pillowcase body? I’m confused. Thanks.
I made a small quilt and a pillow case customizing it for my two year old grandson.. The quilt is full of trucks I drew and appliqued. I did some light quilting too, its a very artsy boyish quilt he loves cars and trucks. I had left over fabric and I thought I would make a pillow case. I was delighted when I found the tutorial. I watched this concise tutorial over and over again as I was too absorbed sewing and cursing out my sewing machine, to change the tutorial==.( fabric ,threads curses all flying in the air) the directions were burned into my brain cells. I had trouble making the pillow case because I had to piece it and some of the fabric was cut on the bias causing some stretching however I am pleased with the results. Since I switch from right to left handed easily, I am frequently confused by directional instructions. A visual aid namely your tutorial was a gift!
We loved your story of making a pillowcase, and that quilt you made your grandson sounds so special - the pillowcase, too! Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your story! - Morgan
love this way. before doing last step of French seam, use a yard stick to smooth those seams instead of your hand. makes it real nice. thank you. very nice
thank You. Love this video... very helpful. At time I refer to this because I always forget the layering order. 9"x3"=27" is sooo helpful for those of us who are now memory challenged.
+Paula V. Rada well lucky for both of us, this video will stay online forever for you to reference! Thank you so much for watching and continuing to come back!
Heartwarming!
Have made many! Its a quick easy staple gift for me! think you are the most excited I’ve ever seen you in one of your many awesome videos Jen! A genius project for sure!
That’s so sweet. Bless you.
I work at a local women & children's shelter & we have a person that makes this style pillowcase & donates pillows & the pillowcases so that every person that comes gets a brand new pillow & pillowcase that they're able to keep when they leave. It's truly such a blessing!
That is amazing! Thank you very much for sharing this touching story with us! 💖 -Michelle
This is such a fun project, and a great beginner item for those classes! They were so useful, it'd be great if schools offered them again! - Morgan
My sewing group is making French pillow covers for the children’s hospital.love your tutorials

What an amazing, personal touch! Thank you so much for watching and sharing with us :)
What a blessing
After watching this video many times, I have made over 100 pillowcases and donated to Children’s Hospital. Thank you for your teaching videos.
We’re so glad this project inspires you! Thank you for sharing your talent and blessing others. -Michelle
We appreciate your support and happy that you enjoy our tutorials! That is very sweet of you to do. Thank you for your comment! ❤️ - Abby
I had my Grand daughter (8 years old) do this for her first sewing project. It was very easy for her and she ended up making another one for her little sister. They just loved them.
+Stacey Romig that is so awesome to hear!! This is a perfect project for beginners, plus the result is so fun!
Denise Bone at least those of us who were not lucky enough to be taught how to sew at a young age have RUclips. I’ve learned so much!
So
@@JaimeDornanLady My mom made curtains out of colored sheets too!
And of course, Home Ec in junior high school.
+tonya lucz So happy you are enjoying our videos! Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching!
Tonya Lucz
Bless you, I'd never notice that SF had gone the extra expense of CC.
Most people think using Google's captioning tool takes care of this, but it doesn't. Try it (you, the hearing person, not the HOH commenter), and see exactly what I mean.
It's a hot mess.
Hilarious, though. See how many sounds are labeled as music, it's cray-cray.
Thank you.
I too am HOH and so grateful for CC
tonya lucz I had no idea that those who make the videos pay to provide closed captioning! So lovely of Jennifer and Shabby Fabrics to do that. “Regular “ CC can be really funny but not helpful 😝
Yep. I have a cochlear implant as do three of my sons. We love that Shabby Fabrics includes the subtitles. It's so helpful!
That is AWESOME to hear! Thank you for your lovely comment and for following along with our tutorial!
Debra Farmer
How cute to be stoked in your 60s 😊
I'm also in my 60s, from the 1960s era.
I'd say you're groovy ☮

My children used to say "rad".. I guess that was short for "radical". I'm 66 and my grandchildren work at keeping me "cool"! 😎
YES!!! I always say men are very good sewers, after all the sewing machine is a MACHINE and men are good with machines
Yay Rick!! We love to see more guys getting involved in sewing and quilting these days! - Morgan
Dan Duncan I’m in!
even though the video says a great gift from a grandmother or aunt..maybe Ill make a pair for for my girlfriend.
Rick Farrow
Genius project!
Your girlfriend is a lucky girl.

I'm a pediatric nurse, and kids love these pillowcases! Thank you for sharing this technique!
What a kind and thoughtful gift to give cynthia Levy! Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your talents with the children you care for!
I made a lot of these years ago for a local children's charity too but we called them hot dog pillowcases. Lol

That is so awesome! The savings of making things for yourself is amazing! So glad this tutorial helped you :)
You are the person that took the time to do step by step and all of your good comments. Thank you very much
We are very happy you enjoy this fun project, Monica. Thanks for watching! -Michelle
Xoxo
Sew glad we've been able to inspire you!! -Michelle
+Rob Marchetti thank you for this tip and thank you so much for watching our tutorial! We are happy to know you like it!

Thanks.
So glad we could provide a simpler version for you +Phyllis B! Thank you for taking the time to watch!
What a great suggestion! We're glad you enjoy this fun project. Thanks for watching! 💖-Michelle
Great Information! Thank you for sharing that and thank you also for watching!

Jennifer I love watching not just you putting the projects together, but the pining and sewing the items. I don't believe it to be a waste of time. Specially when most of us who are watching the tutorial is doing the project with you. You project are so pretty.
Thank you so much for your input and attention to detail! We so appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment :)
This is a very popular project that is so fun to do with family and friends! Happy that you love it and thanks for your comment! - Abby
+Gloria Wojo thank you so, so much for your kind words and for taking the time to watch our tutorial!
What a great tip +Singing2day! Dry runs are a crafters best friend! Thank you so much for watching and sharing this trick with us!
Is it necessary to prewash the fabric?
@@franpol9026 ALWAYS pre-wash cotton. I don't even put it in my sewing room when I get new fabric, I immediately toss it in the laundry bag for washday!
@@franpol9026 If you are using 100% cotton, there could be shrinkage when you wash the pillowcase the first time. If you wash, dry and press the fabric first, what you sew is what you'll get, with no shrinking surprises later.
This pattern is NOT NEW!!! I learned it about ten years ago!
Just an after note .... if you press the ⅛" seam to one side prior to turning pillowcase right sides together it makes the final step of the french seam much easier.
That is a great tip! We love helpful hints like this :) Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial. Thank you. I often use a chopstick to make the corner come out completely

Thank you so much for this heartfelt comment +Marian Davis! Giving to others is one of the great joys and blessings of being a quilter or sewist!
Marian Davis Two other good places to donate would be My Sister’s House (for abused women/children who have left/are hiding from abusive husbands! Often they leave and have nothing but the clothes on their backs!) or a hospice.

Thank you Jennifer, this is so clever. I made quilts and now I will make pillowcases to match. How fun. I LOVE all of your tutorials and several are on my project list!
This definitely is a fun one! Thanks for watching :)
Thank you for using this project to bless others! We are happy you enjoy it so much!! 💖 -Michelle

Excellent advice. I came to the same conclusion after the first washing.
Great tips, thank you!! - Morgan
We're glad you enjoy this tutorial. Thanks sew much for watching!! 🌟 -Michelle
Great tips! We're so glad you enjoy this fun project :) -Michelle

Good idea for the iron-on letters. Did you do an outline stitch around the letters just to reenforce the 'glue' from pulling up after many washes??
I'm making mine today. I bought Road Trip fabric to make them for our RV. Your instructions are excellent! Thank-You! I am also making the giant jelly roll tote for gifts. I am a new quilter and am loving it! Thank-you for making it so easy!

Thank you
Thank you so much for your comment and kind words Mic Kline! So glad to hear that you subscribed! Stay tuned for more tutorials from us!

Yes it is small actions that can make a BIG difference in anyone’s life. Glad you enjoyed this video. Thank you for watching💕 - Yajaira
I got my idea from Jenny at Missouri Star Quilt Company. I have made over 500 pillow cases for the local children's hospital

Made a Christmas pillowcase for my granddaughter last year, and her mum couldn't take it off the bed until June without her whinging.(It had to be washed and dried in a day). So now both grandchildren have 2 each for the rest of the year as well. Such a great idea and superb tutorial. Thank you.

Thank you, Jennifer! I love your tutorial! Finally French seams explained so well...and with our very first grand baby here now, I think I will use the embroidery on the cuff idea! Thank you so much! Maybe Honey needs a monogrammed pillow!
Hi Brenda,
That is so exciting to have a new baby in the house.

- Morgan

I love them .
You are so great with the instructions .

Sharon
Hi Sharon,
That is a great idea about the top stitch on the trim! Thank you for sharing that. There is always so much we can learn from each other. Thanks for watching the RUclips tutorial and taking the time to leave a comment. I hope you have a blessed holiday season, Jennifer
***** Thank you Jennifer, you too.
Sharon
When you say you added a top stitch to the trim,
do you mean you put stitching on the trim at the bottom, only on the trim -
or do you top stitch the bottom of the trim to the pillowcase body? I’m confused. Thanks.
Thank you for the great tutorial. I understand the process now. Thank you so much...
Thank you for watching! Let us know how yours turn out! - Morgan
- Morgan
I love this! So far I have made 7 for gifts this holiday season. I love listening to you, Jen. So sweet, thoughtful and patient. Merry Christmas!
How wonderful!! We're happy you enjoy this project!! Merry Christmas!! 🎄 💖 -Michelle
love this way. before doing last step of French seam, use a yard stick to smooth those seams instead of your hand. makes it real nice. thank you. very nice

You are a breath of fresh air. You explained the process so well without extra bs talk
