Thank-You for a Refresher Video about thr Magic Pillow. I want to making some pillow cases to match a quilt I am giving to a young man. Looking forward to the process, much appreciated. Nancy Duluth,MN.
I can't tell you how many times I have referred back to this video. It is awesome.! Thank you so much for sharing all your tips and knowledge with us. Appreciate and love all the videos you make.
When I need an easy sewing WIN I make pillowcases. I always rewatch to make sure I'm placing the fabric correctly! Thank you for this tutorial and for the print out for all 3 sizes.
Thanks Jen for the updated “Magic Pillow Instructions”. Few suggestions: use magic sizing on the fabric before cutting and you will find that not only are your cuts more accurate, but the rest of the assembly will be easier; also after stitching the first 1/4” seam and before you turn give a press to those stitches to set the seam, for this will also aid in getting the balance of the french seam construction completed; and finally take the Clover tool and run it down the side and bottom seam for this too will help in getting that final step in the french seam construction.
THANK YOU FOR THIS TUTORIAL. You saved me. I got almost done and did not realize how to fix it due to directional fabric. Thank you for saving my Christmas gifts.
At time …. minute 7:38 - 8:35 One thing I did to be able to see the mat when citing the 27” length x 44” length was to fold the material in 1/2. Helped for myself to keep more accurate. Have made so many of these, so fun & satisfying. Thank you Jen, thank you Shabby Fabrics. A stellar American company. ~ JillinSD
My sons had SO MUCH FUN choosing their three fabrics. They searched through my stash, then we looked online, finally finding the perfect fabrics for their personalities! They want some for each holiday, too, which is fine by me!
I totally agree I love when I learn to make something wonderful like these pillows. I truly enjoy watching your video because you make it easy for all of us to follow. I will just have to make some for my self and my grandkids. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful ideas with us.
i have been trying to learn how to sew and quilt for years and always give up because i get so confused and frustrated! Watching Jen's videos are so incredibly helpful! i have purchased 2 kits from Shabby Fabrics and excited to do them! It is like I am in an actual class! Thank you Jen!! and all who help make this possible!! :)
Thank you so much for this pattern and instructions. I am new to sewing and I am so excited to be able to make something homemade for my adult children that they will actually use. When I was buying my fabrics everyone at the fabric store kept telling me that my fabric was directional so be careful. I didn't fully understand what they meant. One shopper told me about your website and told me to watch his video first before cutting. THANK YOU!! Without these instructions, I would have most likely messed up the cutting and would have been so disappointed as the fabric I am using is no longer available. I hope to make a quilt for next year. Can't wait to start trying some of the other projects on your site. Thanks again!!!!
Welcome to the quilting community and the Shabby family! We are happy to hear that you found this video very helpful. We enjoy walking our customers through every step of the process. Thank you for watching. - Yajaira
I've made your Magic Pillowcase several times in the past. They make great gifts but confess that I make them for myself more than for others. Thank you for your very clear and precise instructions. However, today is not my day. And these are my mistakes...nothing at all to do with you. First I layered the fabrics in the wrong order...had to rip it out and start over. Then, I sewed the cuff and the body in two different directions...I'm using one way prints...had to rip it out again! I am confident that third time's the charm! Thanks again :-)
Oh, dear!! We are thrilled that you enjoy our projects, and we believe in you!! You'll get it this time!! Thanks sew much for taking the time to watch!! -Michelle
Love this video. I'm going to make my husband a John Wayne quilt for our 40th wedding anniversary and I'm going to use this technique to make pillowcases to make pillows to go with it! Thanks so much for sharing your creativity and inspiration! Always love watching your watching you create!
So glad you said that about layering! I ALWAYS go back to your RUclips to figure that out! Thank you for the cutting guide! I’ve made so many pillowcases following your RUclips.
You are so welcome! We're so glad the video has been helpful, and we love hearing that you've made so many pillowcases! They're such a fun project. - Morgan
I reviewed this video and comments before cutting my directional fabric. Great instructions! Another component that would be very helpful, as one commenter mentioned, is how to determine the pattern layout/direction if you want to end up with the cuff on the right or left side. Some of us need the visual rather than written instructions. Thanks so much for the video tutorial!
Have you ever found instructions to deal with pattern layout/direction with a directional fabric and making one cuff on the right and one on the left so it looks right on the bed?
THANK YOU THANK YOU for the tutorial on the directional fabric I have been avoiding do any, was just sticking to flowers or designs that work.. You just step up my game on pillowcases for charity work. Stay safe and keep the tutorials coming.
I am very new to sewing and just completed my first pillowcase thanks to Jen and her video. Everything turned out just as shown. Couldn't be happier with the results. Thank you Jen!
I've never made a pillowcase before, but see this video, gives me the courage to try it. When you golfed the body up and enclosed it in the cuff, I was like, "What!!!" Then I got it!
Hi Jen, my name is Bobbi. I am making pillow cases for for Quilts of Valor to give to Veteran Families; and also pillow cases for shelters. I've watched a number of magic pillow case videos and I must say, I've enjoyed yours the best. I am a relatively new sewer, and need as much detail as possible to understand everything. Thank you so much for making these videos in such detail. I absolutely appreciate them. I've also been watching your videos on Cricut. Again, Thank you so much. Wishing you and yours a Blessed Easter. Bobbi
Thank you very much, Bobbi, for your kind words! We're glad that this tutorial has inspired you. Thanks sew much for watching, and have a wonderful Easter!! 💖 -Michelle
Love this project… I was working on a project that had long pieces, so I purchased a couple of long metal rulers from Lowe’s…. an eight and four foot. When I used the eight foot, I used clamps to secure my place on the table and it also gave me a nice, sturdy edge for my rotary cutter to glide up against. They work great!
Wonderful video … I have done the burrito method pillowcase many times … never with directional fabric. This video was just perfect! Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this video, I just made the ‘Land That I Love’ pillow that I purchased from you a while back and this video made it super easy. Thank you so much!💙
I have been sewing these pillowcases for quite a few years. Since they have been used and washed numerous times I noticed early on that the accent strip would wrinkle. If you sew it down before you do the French Seam, it doesn't get all caddy-wampus on you when you take it out of the dryer. (I don't iron pillowcases anymore.) Love watching your videos. They are very helpfull.
I love using fancy decorative stitching as accent on the trim piece. I also adjust its width to complement the chosen fabric. Sometimes a little accent is all that is needed, not the full inch or wider trim piece. This style is so easy to customize.
Oh my Goodness - talk about perfect timing of this video! I have been fretting over some prints I bought online and it turned out they were not running with the selvage. Thank you so very much for this, Jennifer!!!
Fantastic video and clear instructions! Made this pillowcase today with my 8yo granddaughter. She could easily understand your instructions and follow your video. This was a first-time ever sewing project for her and first time for a pillowcase for both of us! We had picked out directional fabric (unicorns), but we had the material cut to the instructions of a different video. No worries. It still came out looking great and she was super happy (so was I)! I think I know what the grandkids (x6) will be getting for Christmas! So many cute fabrics to choose from! Will post the picture on your Instagram page!
Great tutorial! Thank for including the whole process (your thought process too!) and how to fix little things that come up. Can't wait to make one for my daughter. ❤️
Excellent tutorial! I just happened upon this video; so glad I did! I did not think about directional fabric when sewing pillowcases. Also, it’s very refreshing that your sewing is so neat and tidy. Thank you!
You mentioned the link to the free pattern download. When I clicked on the link and went to your site the pattern still said it was free and pointed to another link. That takes you to a professionally printed pattern that you need to buy instead of one to download. Absolutely love the video though. You do need to change alternate where you place the cuff if your making matching pillowcases, one on the left and the other on the right side.
Hi Mari - You can find our Free Download for this project on this page, here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/59 Just click the green "Free Download" button :) Hope this helps! -Michelle
Glad you like it! We hope that this helped! We also have our free download that comes along with it! This can be a great reference to help guide/remind you how to work with directional fabric. Be sure to check that out: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/MagicPillowcase_forDownload.pdf
I have to stop and think through the layering every time. As I was watching this I realized it is ABC backwards. Jen said, “cuff, body, and accent piece all face up”. My brain went CBA and I realized now all I have to do is remember ABC! Thanks for the wonderful tutorial.
Thanks, Jen! I thought sure I had my fabric the correct way on my first attempt until I pulled it out of the tube and it was wrong. :( This video helped me redo the project, and I'm so grateful you took the time to explain. Joni
Loved this video! Will be trying it with my husbands anniversary/birthday present. Will post pictures when it's done sometime in September! I love all of your videos!
Thank you so much for watching! We're so glad you like it and can't wait to see pictures in September! You can share those with us on Facebook or Instagram! - Morgan
Thank you for the video, I was given some kids directional fabric so this helps a lot. One question that you didn't mention in the video and just wanted to confirm - if you want the cuff to lay on the right, you would put the main fabric with the top to the left when pinning, but if you want the cuff on the right, you would lay it with the top on the right, correct?
Yes, that seems to be the correct answer. For a cuff on the opposite side, you would turn your fabric 180 degrees and put the cuff on that side. You can check the accuracy of this by only sewing approximately 4 inches in and peeking inside the rolled tube you've created to see if this is working. Thanks for watching! ✨ -Michelle
I like to line up all the selvages of the fabric pieces on the right and sew them together, then trim off the selvages on both sides before stiching the pillow seams. Then you can be sure that you haven't cut one piece too long or too short.
I purchased your magic pillowcase booklet. My question is how do you cut directional material for cuff? I make the cuff with print, the border accent another pop of color and the body solid cotton. Reason for this, I embroidery name of person getting pillow case. So I’m having trouble placing for cuff for standard and toddler pillowcases. Thank you if you can help me with placement. I use your booklet on magic pillow cases.
One of my favorite tutorials and the one that brought me to your channel years ago :) Question, if I have a pattern for something like a bag that doesn't have French seams will I need to add to the total size to make up for the seams?
wonderful tutorial, I still messed up. Nice pillows you made. It would be good to see the fabric cut right from the fabric bolster and onward. thank you for the tutorial
I got confused with the directional and cut the 27 inches from the 44 inches my own confusion got the best of this project. Im a beginner at this stuff.
This is so helpful. Thank you so much for sharing with us. Like everyone here i have been avoiding such projects. I feel confident to explore with other fabrics for sure.... xxx. Glad I stumbled on your channel. Definitely looking forward to more videos.... and get inspired :D

Thank you for your videos. I learn so much. Are you using a walking foot? When do I use my walking foot. I have a Brother machine. Thanks and have a wonderful day!
Does the fabric need to be washed first? Or does the measurements account for some shrinkage from future washings? I hope someone will answer as I need 2 pillow cases to match quilts I made for my grandsons for Christmas
It is up to you! We don't but some people do prior to making their projects. That sounds like a great gift! He will love these! Thanks for your comment! - Abby
Why not just fold the fabric in half when cutting the 27” width? Then you’d be cutting 22” and you’d see what you’re doing. Not all fabrics line up. Some patterns run on the diagonal, so you might not be able to line up the “top of the hammock.” Also, won’t the pattern be upside down on the back side of the pillowcase? I’ve done directional ones by cutting the 27” x 45” fabric into 2 pieces that are 27” x 22.5”, then rotate one and sew them back together before continuing. Then both sides of the pillowcase are correct and it can be used with the opening going toward the left or right.
I love your measurement board to work on ! Where can I purchase one this size ? I really love your tutorial. You give easy to follow instructions...thank you ! The overhead camera is wonderful !!!
Thank you so much Terri! We appreciate your feedback and your support! We love our Mega Mat! They're available in all sorts of sizes online. Ours is one of the biggest options. - Morgan
Great video and instructions. The Double main body is 27", for the King, the main body is 36". What size would you cut for the Queen size (30" or 31")? Thank you.
Standard Pillowcase Size: 1. Pillow Body: 27" x WOF (width of fabric, about 41") 2. Cuff: 9" x WOF 3. Accent Strip: 3" x WOF Queen Size Pillowcase 1. Pillow Body: 30" x WOF 2. Cuff: 9" x WOF 3. Accent Piece: 3" x WOF King Size Pillowcase 1. Pillow Body: 36" x WOF 2. Cuff: 9" x WOF 3. Accent Piece: 3" x WOF Hope this helps! 💖 -Michelle
I’ve made numerous Magic Pillowcases and have a problem with my accent pieces. Most of my accent pieces look horrible after laundering they wrinkle and rarely lay flat. I’m pretty sure I’ve only purchased 100% cotton however, I have a set of Christmas pillowcases that miraculously the accent piece always looks freshly ironed every time. Any ideas on what blend of fabric it might be? Since I’m not prone to ironing pillowcases, I’ve started leaving off the accent piece and just making a cuff. However, I sure miss the pop of color!
I looove these..made 77 of these for a childrens hospital!!! Thanks for sharing ideas
That is really sweet of you to do. These are perfect gift ideas for children! Happy that you loved this project and thanks for your comment! - Abby

✨ -Michelle
I’d like a special pillowcase on my birthday and I’m an adult! I think I’m going to start doing that in my house :).

I like to line up all the selvages of the fabric pieces on the right and sew them together, then trim off the selvages on both sides before stiching the pillow seams. Then you can be sure that you haven't cut one piece too long or too short.
These are great tips! Happy that you enjoyed this project! Thanks for your comment! - Abby
I love it. I’m new to sewing but going to try.
Glad you enjoy this project!! We believe in you!! -Michelle

I love this fabric!❤️
It's so pretty! - Morgan
Turn the directional fabric and would make really cute pillow case dress.
Super cute idea! - Morgan
This fabric is made into pillowcases and quilts that look really good

One of my favorite tutorials and the one that brought me to your channel years ago :) Question, if I have a pattern for something like a bag that doesn't have French seams will I need to add to the total size to make up for the seams?
Hi Candy! So glad you like the tutorial and that this was what brought you to the channel! We love to hear it.
Shabby Fabrics yes. I the pattern doesn’t call for French seams but I wanted to use them. Would I have to add anything to my cuts?
I add a 1/2 “
wonderful tutorial, I still messed up. Nice pillows you made. It would be good to see the fabric cut right from the fabric bolster and onward. thank you for the tutorial
I got confused with the directional and cut the 27 inches from the 44 inches
my own confusion got the best of this project. Im a beginner at this stuff.
Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you enjoy this fun project- keep practicing!! -Michelle

Oh my! This is great info, but my family uses king sized pillows. Can this work for that size?
Yes, you can download the fabric requirements for the King Size here on the free donwloads page: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Free-Downloads-W4C258.aspx and this is the pdf page: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/MagicPillowcase_forDownload.pdf - Yajaira
Thank you for your videos. I learn so much. Are you using a walking foot? When do I use my walking foot. I have a Brother machine. Thanks and have a wonderful day!
Hi NP Bird! Yes, you can use your walking foot for this project. We tend to use a walking foot for straight stitching. -Michelle
What type of mat are you working on? I am using an antique dining room table and need to protect it. Love your videos, everything is so pretty
Thank you so much! Our large cutting mat is a Mega Mat! - Morgan
@linjber, I was thinking the same thing, cut that body in half, allowing for a seam allowance, then it stays right side up.
Any point turner works just fine for getting corners poked out. I wooden or plastic chop stick works fine.
Great suggestions! Thank you for watching! 💖 -Michelle
I love your measurement board to work on !

@@ShabbyFabrics Thank you Michelle. You are an Angel! Love all the videos spoken with wisdom, love and kindness!
Hello! We always use 100% cotton or flannel as well. A little starch may help to keep its shape if you would like to give that a try! - Yajaira
Can you elaborate on how to add a little starch? I’m assuming you’re not advocating ironing the pillowcases each time you launder.
