I love making pillowcases this way (burrito style). Sometimes I will make a pillowcase to gift a quilt (especially nice if have leftover fabric so it matches). Funny story…the last time I bought a set of sheets for the bed I forgot to order matching pillowcases. No problem…just went to my stash and pulled three coordinating fabrics. Love how they turned out.
Most larger size sheets come with pillowcases, I think even Twin size comes with 1, but that may have changed over the years, but I love making them, too. Someone asked me years ago "why would you make a pillowcase when they come with the sheets?" I said "because I like to!" Plus, I think they're more personal 😊😊
@@marlahanks7278 I didn’t order the sheets as a set and that’s why no pillowcases came with them. I liked the ones I sewed better than the ones that I could have ordered.
Great instructions! This is how I make pillowcases as well. I make them for my grandchildren, as well as for children at Sick Kids Hospital and the Womens Centre. Thank you for your dedication in making projects and videos for all of your viewers. Greatly appreciated!!
I love making this style of pillowcases! I started top-stitching the cuff and accent piece so that over time (and lots of washing) they stay nice and flat! 😊
I make all my pillowcases this way. It’s so easy and quick. I make holiday ones for special occasions and give them for gifts. The only hard part is picking out the fabric! There’s so many beautiful fabrics that can make these!
This is how I make pillowcases too. I typically leave out the accent fabric. I have made with flannel and most recently with fleece. Though with the fleece I didn’t do the French seams as I thought that would be too bulky.
Have seen what seems like a million of these one million pillowcase challenge tutorials, but this is the best! Your verbal instruction and camera angles are unbeatable. Thanks for another great tutorial, FQS!
Kimberly, this is the same way we make the pillowcases for the Smiles program. Have made several hundred of them. I have a friend that made a set of holiday pillowcases for each of her grandchildren. I think she made a different one for each month! Great idea.
Thank you thank you thank you Kimberly. Now I feel I can confidently make a French seam pillowcase. You made it easy to understand and follow with simple directions.
My whole family gets pillowcases every year for Christmas. Sometimes there's a theme, sometimes it's random. I always make a few extras in case one of the kids doesn't like theirs. They have to pick without seeing it, it almost always works out. 😉
Thanks for another wonderful tutorial and including both standard and king size pillowcases! This is how I make pillowcases as well. I usually make pillowcases from the leftover quilt fabric to give along with the quilts I've made. My grandkids love the pillowcases I've made for them!
I love these, but the last step for me is to do a small top stitch along the edge of the thin accent strip to hold it down. I’ve found that if I don’t, once I’ve washed the pillowcases, they tend to not lay flat again unless they’re ironed. And I definitely don’t take time to iron my pillowcases. I’ve made these for all of my grandchildren and each year they get more: themed ones for Christmas, Valentines, Halloween, birthday, etc. So fun!
Love these pillows. Have made a couple of them. Will refer to this when doing more. Have fabric with chemical symbols for a grandson. Think he would like it. Great use for those fabrics I bought “just because I liked it”.
This is how I make pillowcases as well. I make them for my grandkids and make seasonal/holiday ones (travel pillow size) for their beds. There are fun and easy to make! Thanks for sharing.
😊😊 Great instructions, anyone would be able to follow. It helps you wrap your head around the funky way you have to sew together to get the beautiful French seams. Thanks😊😊
Pillows are larger now, and fluffier and more comfortable, so…by the time you make this pillowcase with unwashed quilting cotton and then wash and dry it, it shrinks so much it’s hard to put on the pillow. So I make them a little longer so it’s not a struggle to put them on .😊
@@singmysong1167I was about to ask the same thing. I only need one person to agree that it would need to be wider and longer. I am getting started this week.
Since I’m on a quest to make custom pillowcases for my grandchildren, I’ve watched a LOT of pillowcase making videos! This by far is the ABSOLUTE BEST!!! Kimberly’s instructions are very easy to follow and she speaks clearly!! I am confident and excited to sew now! Thank you so much!!!!
Another great video ! Thank you for updating in the making of a pillow case.. you are always thinking inside and outside the box . 😊 . I so look forward to your videos and the many many tips you give us .
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. It was so simple and fun to make. I made a pillowcase for my granddaughter to match her princess quilt. She just loves it.
Thanks so much for this detailed instruction. I just finished the applique quilt my aunt started in 1960, and then made her two matching pillow cases (without applique!😮). SENDING IT OFF SOON
It would be a 10 minute pillowcase for me if I could speed up! It was a 30 minute project for me. Cut, pin, sew, press, pin, sew, press, pin, sew & press. 10 individual steps. If this took 10 minutes, each of those tasks would have to be done in 1 minute! 😂It doesn’t take long, that’s for sure, but I’m a fairly quick quilter and I couldn’t do it in 10 minutes. It’s a great pattern and video though! Thank you!🎉🎉
Thank you so much! This is better than the way I've been sewing them (was finishing long side French seam and then doing the shorter side. Sewing both sides as you showed eliminates the bulk in the corner! Hope that made sense. 😺). I've got 2 pillow cases cut out that I was going to sew today. Great timing! 😻👍😻
The best pullow case tutorial I have seen! Thank you for the clear explanations and also focusing on precise measurements, cutting right angles and straight lines, and finishing carefully! It’s very easy to make but details make it look its best!
Thanks for demoing the French seam. I had heard of it but never saw how to make them. Will have to see if I have enough Old Glory fabric to make the pillow case after I make the quilt.
Love the pillowcase send it tutorial, but I find that the first see you make should be less than a quarter of an inch otherwise, when you make the French seam at a quarter of an inch, some of your edges may show through, which was the problem that I had so that’s what I’ll do next time make my first team More narrow
Please teach people to rip their fabric and get a true straight of grain before beginning a sewing project; then cut the salvages off before continuing. The pillowcase in this project is not sewn on the straight of grain and will eventually twist when on the pillow. Finding the straight of grain of a piece of fabric is the first step in preparing to sew a project.
Am I the only one missing something? She has given only part of the cutting dimensions. 27" x width of fabric...what width? Same question for the cuff. I have been sewing since I was 13 so I understand sewing directions but I am stumped on this.

I used my walking foot to minimize slipping of fabric layers, especially when sewing the cuff/accent/body seam.

@@puyleartbeamazed2930I have the same thought. I guess you would just increase the width of your cuff piece a bit.

Hi Kimberly, thanks for sharing. I always forget about French seams, I guess it's because I don't make very many pillow cases.

This is awesome. I'm going to make some pillow cases!!!
I’m going to try this. Thank you
I’m a beginner, and am challenged by (lots of things😅) the WOF measurements. What are the actual width measurements for a standard pillow?
This is the pattern I have used with a slightly smaller cuff. It works every time.
Thanks!
Going to studio to make some now!
I’m just wondering about the fit, with the two seams does the pillowcase fit adequately or is it tight?
Great instructions!
Great instructions
❤ this! Thank You
Love it!.
❤thank you.
Loved it thank u. That was amazing👩🏻😊🌻
You can also use a serger instead of a French seam. Even quicker. ❤
Love this! Could you share the measurements for a Queen size pillow?
Hello DM! We did not write measurements for a queen size pillow.
king fabric requirements show 1 1/8 yd, but cutting shows 36". Is that just giving room for squaring up fabric? Great video, thank you!!
Hello Cheryl! Yes, that is correct.
Can this be done without the accent fabric?
I've been making these for quite a few years. The main difference in mine is that the 1st "burrito" seam is done at 1/2" instead of 1/4".
Burrito style with French seams is great isn't it?!?!
What are the length measurements of you have remnant pieces?
Hello MJ! We did not measure the leftover pieces.
Do you recommend 100% cotton fabric?
Hello Michele! Yes, that is what we recommend but you could use other fabrics if you'd like.
Wonderful tutorial. Thank you... Scribed and hit the 🔔
How to cut each piece ?
If you trim your 1/4” seam to 1/8” then when you turn it inside out you an do a 1/4” seam.
What stands for WOF?
From South Africa 🇿🇦
Width of fabric.
Was wondering ! Why don’t you take off the salvage before? I’m guessing it makes a difference. Maybe more of a ninety degree angle?
Just a guess, but it is much easier for me to see which direction the fabric needs to be in as she sews.
Wow so much for me 😂
Love the pillowcase send it tutorial, but I find that the first see you make should be less than a quarter of an inch otherwise, when you make the French seam at a quarter of an inch, some of your edges may show through, which was the problem that I had so that’s what I’ll do next time make my first team More narrow
❤❤❤
Are you sure the measurements for the cuff is correct ?? Both pillows call for 11 inches, but the king cuff looks wider
Hello Karen! Yes, that is the correct measurement.

Am I the only one missing something? She has given only part of the cutting dimensions. 27" x width of fabric...what width? Same question for the cuff. I have been sewing since I was 13 so I understand sewing directions but I am stumped on this.
Typical fabric widths are pretty standard these days at about 42". I would think that would be a safe bet. With vintage fabrics, all bets are off. :)
