I used to build the battery for the id.4 It is certainly the most recyclable battery on the market. The car isn't as fast as the Model Y, but realistically it doesn't need to be. I thought it was plenty fast enough and very nice to drive. I'm also 6'5 and could behind the seats if they were where I would need them. Non-car people, also seem to want to be as detached from the road as possible
Bought a Model Y here. I was immensely impressed and didn't have any QC issues that Tesla is known for. ID4 never came on my map. I was impressed with the Mach E, but dealers drove away me as a potential buyer. A lot of dealers asking 10k over sticker, even worse for the GT. Basically priced the standard Mach E above the Model Y performance. Doesn't make much sense.
Yup, Ford dealers are one of the worst. Too bad I'm a Ford guy. On top of that Ford lately is getting worst with their features being offered at way higher price than competitors from Asia. Example, Hyundai and Toyota offer their full driving assistance technologies on most of their models as standard including some of their base. While Ford's blue cruise is offered at a premium price. With that said we really tried hard looking at Ford and other american cars 1st before deciding. Eventually finance wins over heart.

I think the Mach-e is great where Tesla is poor, easy to use & familiar, but let down by the legacy systems (dealership structure & engineering design)
Yeah, I found a dealer selling for MSRP, so I am doing that. I don't much like the interior layout of the Model 3/Y, but the dealerships definitely suck

We ordered a Premium AWD with X-plan so had no problems getting one less than MSRP. It is not hard to get a X-Plan pin. Own 100 shares of Ford Stock for 6 months, or join the Mustang Club Of America for 90 days or work for a company that is part of Ford's Partner Program.
I own both, a Tesla and the Mach-e. There is so much you guys have not covered. Your review does not translate to real life applications. My Tesla (with new refresh) feels built better, no rattles and solid. My Mach-e has rattles, the software is slow and the car takes much longer to charge. Although I love Ford, the Mach-e is still far behind..
How anyone could drive a junk car like that is beyond me

I remember when the first ICE cars showed up with electric power steering. Everyone complained there was a lack of feedback and that it felt artificial. Didn't take long for the manufacturers to put the feel back in using software. I guessing they can do the same for EV's.

The striking point here is that the Tesla is inferior in areas that are relatively easy for Tesla to fix, such as ride and build quality, but the other two products are inferior in ways that are much harder to improve -software and charging network.
The Tesla seats are the most comfortable I've ever sat in, and one of the reasons I bought the car
The model y has more mpge, more range and faster charging. And also. I think these guys just like lots of shit all over. I think it's goofy to have all those boba and buttons. Like we're some sort of jet pilots. Reminds me of mercades. They are nightmares, all the buttons and nobs and settings.

Actually I think you've got that backwards. Build quality and ride are not easy to fix. Obviously they're not because 12 years after they started building cars they're still having issues with this. Software is the thing that should be easy to fix...
Just requires programming. And all of these cars get over the air updates.
So this so the software problems in the other two vehicles can be easily rectified.
The Tesla riding like crap and having squeaks and rattles is not something that can be fixed afterwards in an update.

Basic controls like turn signal knobs, volume knobs, climate control settings are things that people do want physical controls over.
People coming from other cars are going to want things that feel familiar they don't want to have to relearn everything new.
Even the door handles on the Teslas are idiotic. Have someone walk up to a Tesla and try to figure out how to open the door.
If you have to explain to someone how to open the door you failed as an engineer designing that door handle opening system.
Personally I'd get the Volkswagen, I drive for a living all day long and the softer ride would be something I would personally desire.
You can get the car in all wheel drive now with significantly more power. For a $3,000 upgrade in all trims.
They also offer three different levels of trim. The base model is $39,000. Comes with everything you could possibly want in a car. Skips the giant panoramic roof, and gives you cloth seats.
I live in the Southwest.
The last thing I want is a giant glass panel over my head in the middle of summer.
The inside of a car can get to 150° f in the summer .. the last thing you want is leather seats. And Volkswagen allows me to decide what I want.
I'm not a big Volkswagen fan in general. I try to stay away from European cars due to high repair costs and maintenance issues. But I think being electric a lot of that might be eliminated but who knows for sure.
I test drove all three of these before buying my first all electric, and I went with the Ford Mach E GT. Yes, I won't call it a Mustang. It's just a Mach E GT. I love it so far. Hitting 500 miles soon.

The other brands are so far behind than any Tesla on the road today. Just the smooth efficient power delivery and the FSD of course makes the Tesla a king. I am currently driving a Model Y with FSD beta 10.5 and I feel the future being here. Absolutely fantastic technology.
Got a model Y this year, absolutely love it.
Kudos to the model Y, i've driven one and i thought it was awesome. That said, I also drove the Mach E, - no, it's not a mustang. BUT, I wound up going with the Ford. The interior was so, so much nicer than the Y, and while performance wasn't, it was 90% there. Again, both great cars but Ford really knocked this one out of the park.
Yeah, I also went with Mach E. Model Y is ok, Tesla charging network is great. But I don't plan for any long road trip, so charging network is no use for me. If I ever want a long road trip with my family, i'd rather rent a 3 row gas SUV. The last thing you want on a road trip is kids crying in the back seat and you have to wait 30 minutes for charging. I prefer Mach E interior is the decision point.
I came to the same decision. Chose the MME over the Tesla Y, this despite being a Tesla 3 owner. Love the MME
After driving them all I was pleasantly surprised by the Mach E,,,,,it was my choice as well.

The Mach-E is definitely my favorite looking of the trio and I love the fact that they still provide a speedo/gauge cluster. It would definitely be my pick if I was in the market. My next car is definitely going to be an EV so I'm hopeful there will be more options and more charging infrastructure in the next 2-3 years. But good point about charging overnight in the city. My historic high rise doesn't have one or plan to install one, but thankfully there are some options in underground garages in the neighborhood.
Same situation here but my garage at work has chargers, so I can charge while at work.
I own 4 teslas. I was never a car guy. Do yourself a favor and drive a Tesla for a few days. They are far superior to any EV or any car in the world. Too many distinct characteristics to mention without experiencing it first hand.

You should have compared the AWD ID 4. Also the ID4 can charge just fine at any charging station...they aren't locked to Electrify America, although they do get free charging there for 3 years.
To be fair, the gripes they had with the FE ID.4 seem like they'd have applied just as much to the dual motor version. I say that as an ID.4 owner.

Just picked up a used Pro S AWD and yes, the extra 100hp makes a big dif. That and the fact that VW is about to roll out their LONG awaited software update which is supposed to fix the laggy-ness and other glitches, plus introduce improvements, makes it for me. The quality of the interior and build is far superior to the Tesla, which costs way more. For an everyday it's excellent.

Don't know if you thought about OTA updates that Tesla gives, as well as an excellent app, a card as well as app to use, removeable rims, safest vehicle on the road in the category, and storage kicking the butt of either Mustang or VW....these are all things that a person LIVING with the vehicle would consider not JUST driving experience....thanks for the video. Ordering and buying a Mustang or VW are TERRIBLE experiences for ANYONE !! Buying a Tesla is MUCH easier, less stress, and NO PRESSURE to buy extra features or haggling for price !!! ALL underrated aspects of getting a vehicle. The Model Y is NOT the perfect vehicle, but considering the youth of the company they did a great job !!!!
I completely agree with you guys; the Mustang is by far the most interesting option here. I'm personally excited about the future of EVs, but automakers really need to get away from this styling language that looks like it was made for a film adaptation of 1984.
Are you going to buy a Mustang Mach E?
I agreed with most of what they said, but when they say go with the Tesla for the better range, then I have to respectfully disagree. Look at range of each in real world testing. The Ford has better range when tested, no questions. Ford under promised but over delivers on its mileage calculations. Tesla over promised but under delivers. So says Edmunds, Alex on Autos and Kyle, professionals who each performed real world testing and gave the nod to the Mustang as having the longest range.
And if sporty handling and drivability is your most important factor, then I say go with the Mustang Mach E GT PE with Magna Ride suspension. Neither Tesla or the VW have that. It makes a huge difference.
The one big advantage of the Tesla is its nationwide charging structure, but I believe the others will catch up fast and sooner rather than later. Also, the vast majority of EV owners do their charging at home. No matter what EV you pick, its pretty cool to have a charger in your garage which pumps electrons into your car while you sleep. How many ICE owners have a gas pump in their garage?
The mach-E is the most interesting option here, sure, but it's still shitty at best from an enthusiast perspective. EV's will always be appliances, they will never have character. Are you young? I genuinely can't comprehend how anybody is excited for this future.

I'm not sure I agree on the charging infrastructure. I mean it's cool that you can charge 'anywhere', sure, but for most people the main benefits of EV's is the cost, and if you rely on the infrastructure (specifically supercharging) then the cost becomes not great, they rape you in terms of cost to supercharge your car. When fuel prices are low it's more expensive to charge L3 than fill with gas. Maybe it's different now that gas prices are so high, but when they'relow there isn't a huge difference in cost between gas & electric (obviously maintenance aside). When you charge at home however, it generally decimates the cost of gas.
So IDK, if you rely on supercharging in the EV infrastructure you get reamed and pay near gas prices. I wouldn't buy an EV unless I planned on relying almost entirely on 110v or 220v garage power and only charging at a power station in an emergency or if I wanted some peace of mind, and I'd think other people may feel the same.
That being said, their whole nav bit, where you can do road trips and it factors the charging stops and how long into each leg of the trip is pretty badass.
@@MrSlowestD16 . Come for a ride in my Plaid and tell me it’s an appliance. 0-60 in about 2 seconds. It will beat any production gas car in the world. 9.2 ish in the quarter mile. Live with a Tesla for a week and I guarantee, you will be blown away. It was like going from my Nokia dumb phone to my first iPhone.

I have a Mach E Premium AWD Extended Range. It's a fantastic car. I test drove a GT and it blew my mind. So I ordered a GT Performance Edition. I can't wait to get it!

I went for the Model Y, in this generation the competition is compromised. Kia and Hyundai should probably be considered the biggest competitors to Tesla, their new EV cars are great
Been saying that as well, Hyundai and KIA have a ton of very smart engineers and they know what they're doing. Plus they're based in Asia, lots of manufacturing capability in the area.
Does Kia or Hyundai cars do 0-60 in 3.3 seconds? You cant compare these Korean cars to Tesla!

Part of the high price of Tesla is their charging infrastructure. By comparison, the other EV manufacturers do not have a charging infrastructure. Road tripping in a Tesla is easy and fun due to Superchargers and Autopilot. I would like to see you guys road trip these (and other) EVs.
Yes this is the true test of an EV. See how well it and you handle the range anxiety travelling between cities and the time it take to recharge doing so.

The Mach E driver wasn't prepared well for the best way to handle the current state of CCS. Its not as hard as implied, though. We are going for an EV for our daily and the Mustang is definitely our preferred choice. Styling and comfort win for us. My wife and I both test drove the Tesla. Love the performance. But honestly, we can’t live with that design and poor quality feel for the money they want. And it looks incredibly dated. like a grandpa-mobile
Yes drum brakes on the rear axle. Much better suited for electric cars that basically don't use the rear brakes because they don't rust. Braking performance is as good as discs, don't worry
Yeah the Tesla is a pretty bad car… If it was half the price, then it would make a very good cheap bargain vehicle for budget-minded people. At this price point however, you must be buying it out of spite or some ego thing.

Drum brakes can last much longer in cold climates where they salt the roads. Remember unless you drive aggressively, the brakes are hardly used, causing disks to rust.
The range anxiety is . . . exaggerated. As a dude who's daily-driven an EV for 3 years (Bolt), I've only experienced it once or twice--including numerous road trips.
Big facts. Range anxiety was the biggest reasons it took me so long to buy an EV. I’ve owned a model s for 5 years. I’ve driven the car from Florida to Cali and back 4 times. I’ve never once experienced range anxiety. It’s by far the most over exaggerated ev “problem”.
What happened to Don't buy the new model? Curious as to durability & software updates for the new vehicles.

as a tesla stock investor since 2013, i am probably biased, although i don't own a tesla. so when i say that the KIA EV6 looks to be as good or better than the tesla model Y at a comparable price (~$60,000), then you may want to believe it. available in europe now, and coming to the U.S. next spring.
and yes, legacy automakers with their shortsightedness have ruled out half of their prospective clients by not having invested in an easily accessible worldwide charging network with speeds that make a home charger unnecessary; a convenience perhaps but not a necessity.
BTW, i can say for certain that for me the lack of a screen directly in front of me was not be an issue after the first fifteen minutes of driving. and yes, the stark, minimalist interior, even for a minimalist is a bit OTT. looks like it might have been designed by a max von planck or robert oppeheimer.
The EV6 is one of the best looking EVs available. The Tesla Y is possibly the worst. Horrific design.
The issue is there still is a migration factor for a huge pie of customers.
The 1st impression is their best impression and to be frank the Tesla gives some f worst 1st impressions.
Coupled with some serious built quality issues like squeaky doors, rattly parts.. Some will be put off easily.
Please understand that more than 100 years of exp of Ford, VW cannot b slacked off easily.
They do know a word or 2 on how to make cars.. Not tech machines maybe
As a Mustang enthusiast and owner of a 05 Mustang convertible, I was skeptical at first whether the Mach E deserved the Mustang brand. Pulled the trigger on one and now have had my MME 4X for 9 months / 9 thousand miles. Yes, it deserves the Mustang badge.
How much is the Mustang badge worth exactly?
Putting Mustang tailights on an suv does not make it a Mustang. I bet Ford will soon drop the Mustang name on this car and simply call it Mach E.

Hi guys. Thanks for the review, nicely done. One thing that totally escaped your review was Practicality. I'm thinking luggage space, dog space, golf club space etc. In this area the Tesla is approx. 40% bigger (and more usable) than both of the competition. For me having that space is such a great thing it tilts the buying decision in Tesla's favour.
in my view - i think these people are Americans and tesla biased in their personality, hence FORD is first. and also the way he says "tesla pulled it off but they are charging more for less quality product as they are not experienced car manufacturer" also points to the same. you don't look for sweetness in lemons, similarly you should not look for muscle car/mustang like personality in EVs. frankly i am not an EV car owner or tesla fan, this is just an opinion based on the video.
A Pinto in the 70s was called a Mustang, so it’s not too much of a stretch calling that EV a Mustang.
It also looks like a Mustang. At least as much as the Y looks like a 3.
No it wasn’t. The original Mustangs were built from the Falcon platform. This was from 1964 1/2 until 1968. Starting with 1969 it had its own platform. The Pintos had their own uni-body platform.

Well, they did a pretty good job. I had a 75 Mustang II and I had friends who were relegated to Pintos and they couldn't have felt and looked more different
@@fensterlips We shopped between a Mustang II and a Mercury Capri and chose the West German built Capri. That car was far superior to the Mustang II. It was a looker, the interior was attractive, it was fairly quick back in the day, handled well despite the solid rear axle and it was VERY reliable without any quality issues (2.0 liter four). This is the car the Mustang II SHOULD have been.
My main complaint with the Mustang Mach-E is that it's not called the Thunderbird.
Or even E-bird.. it's not a Mustang..

Tesla may make a more technically advanced car, but their nearest outlet is 317 miles away from me. The nearest Tesla charger is 50 miles away.
My local Ford dealership is 3 miles away. If I had to get either one today I’d buy the Mach-E for that reason. As things stand I have my eye on replacing my 2004 Chevy Silverado with a Ford Lightning.
I’m retired, my need for a truck isn’t that great now, but I still like the room (I’m 6’5”) in a truck and the way one drives. I know the push is on towards electrification. I will still keep an ice vehicle for the few longer road trips I make.
I’m by no means a Tesla fanboy, but both reviewers really did a disservice by not having a dedicated segment on charging these cars. Always charging at home then all three cars are equal, but need to charge on the road and the ID4 and Mustang become a nightmare. Broken Electrify America stations or stations that simply don’t exist abound. Tesla, hands down, has the best charging station infrastructure in America. There isn’t a close second.
Did you watch this piece? There was a few minute section dedicated to charging and the superiority of the Tesla supercharger system.
@@EverydayDriver I did watch the whole video. Would have been nice if you had shot video on how to find a charging station, how long it took to charge, and any issues you encountered. Reviewing an EV is different than reviewing an ICE car, and the charging network is a huge factor in the buying decision making process.
I did enjoy the review, and for the most part I think your observations were spot on. The Mustang is a fun car to drive but the charging experience is a nightmare (my friend owns a Mustang EV).
Wow to hear that Mustang won is shocking. But you guys didn't ever seem to dislike it and for that I can say I'd like to drive it.

@@nickmartin8495 Ford has only allowed 5 seconds of full power, and then it cuts power. Are you aware of that?
@@mchenryjeremy are you referring to an acceleration cutoff? I haven’t noticed anything like that.. if I am in Unbridled mode (or others) and I step on the accelerator eg when I am passing another vehicle, I don’t notice any drop off in power

There are other electric cars to look for... But they do have a soul, just a different one! I'm using first gen Leaf for in town commute, looks strange, seating position is off, battery is kinda small and degrading. But I just love to zip through traffic in that thing. It's no sports car but everything else feels slow and clumsy in the traffic around me, it handles better than you expect from a city hatchback. It offers remote heating/cooling, decent space. It's built solid and you can do burnouts from every red light. And this is a budget EV, not even powerful. Try looking into BMW i3 or Mini electric...

Honestly I’m looking for something like the I.d. 4 but I would like the interface of the mustang.

Tesla owners are so sensitive. I understand that they love their cars. Many people love their cars. But it seems to go over the top. When someone criticizes a Tesla, it’s like someone insulted their mother. What’s with that? It goes far beyond even the Camaro vs Mustang rivalry. These folks take it PERSONALLY, it seems
This is from the owner of a Model 3 AND a 987 Boxster S. Love them both. Does the Model 3 have the “theater” of the Boxster with the flat six wail? No. But the effortless, massive, torque and acceleration that is always available at your right food is just as much fun in it’s own way, and ADDICTIVE. While the Model 3 doesn’t have the sublime suspension tuning of the Boxster (Telsa has only been selling mass produced cars since about 2012), the chassis is fantastic. Double wishbone up front, and multilink in the rear. The Model Y has the same chassis.
The seats in my Model 3 are the best I have ever used. Period. They get me to a destination 500 miles away in comfort, with no aches or pains at the end of the journey. Yours is the ONLY comment I have EVER seen bitching about Model Y seats up front. The seats in the back aren’t the best because of the relatively high floor.
You complained about “terrible build quality” of the Model Y without naming a SINGLE EXAMPLE. Which suggests that the comment is rooted in the “i don’t like minimalism in a car” attitude. Speaking for myself, I find the clean lines and absence of clutter to be relaxing. But that is personal preference, and wholely SUBJECTIVE.
The whole, “I don’t want to have to look over to see my speed” thing is VASTLY overrated. If you take the time to compare the distance you eyes actually move to check the speedometer (and I have), you will find there is very little (in any) difference between a Model 3/Y and a vehicle with a conventional speedometer. In the Model Y yours eyes are tracking right. In a conventional vehicle your eyes are tracking down. But the overall degree of shift of your eyes is nearly indentical.
You praised the Ford for having a rotary knob on the center screen for volume control, and ignored the scroll wheel/button on the left side of the Model Y steering wheel that allows you to adjust volume, skip tracks, and pause/resume without taking your hand off the wheel.
You bitched about the way the Y looks, and ignored the fact that it’s shape is driven by aero efficiency.
I just LOVE the way you COMPLETELY IGNORED the fact that the Model Y is, by far, the most efficient and practical of the three cars here. It has a smaller battery, with more range, than the Ford. Which means that it will be cheaper to operate. It will take you on cross country trips with ease. I have taken my Model 3 on several road trips. Every time I stopped to charge, the car was done before I was ready to climb back in and resume the journey. You will NOT have the same experience in either of the other two. Why? Because they don’t have the Supercharger network, and they charge much more slowly.
All the criteria you verbalized in your ranking of the cars was purely subjective. Meanwhile, you completely ignored objective criteria that would matter to the VAST majority of potential buyers in this segment. They don’t care about steering feel. They want to get from point A to B with all their stuff with a minimum of fuss, while being able to merge and pass as needed.
I love you guys, but in this one you came across as a couple of Luddites bitching that if God had wanted man to fly, he would have given us wings.

Love the y performance compared to my 2017 gt350 I traded in. It has more torque and much faster and more fun than all the 8 stangs I have owned.No regrets!

My first 6 moths in the model 3 has yielded 20k miles. No issues getting around. Most aggressive was trip was 3000 miles in one week. The stops for charging is actually good and it resets your brain for the next stint. The only thing I have been missing is waypoints, but that has recently been added. I do not find the M3 particularly quiet. When you get up to highway speed there is some wind noise that is quite audible. But then again, before that I was in a S90 and it was for sure quieter at highway speeds. The S90 had the B&W audio system and because of that the sound system in the model 3 always seemed disappointing to me. I liked the seats in the Volvo better but my family likes the Tesla more. As someone who just had to justify replacing brakes, belts, plugs, and oil on my irrational sports car to their Model Y driving wife, saying these are hard to live with is objectively the furthest thing from the truth. Our second Y makes transportation TOO EASY and our first saved her life in a bad crash. Tesla quality is certainly nothing to write home about and the recent price hikes really make them expensive but the charging network and resale values of the others remain fully disqualifying. Tesla is far from perfect and the others are wonderful cars in isolation but as a whole, you'd be crazy not to go Tesla.
Good points. I don’t want an electric crossover/SUV so if I was buying today, I’d def go with the Model 3. I’m hoping there will be a few compelling choices for compact or midsize EV cars in a few years.
There are alternatives. I agree with you but I wouldn't go Tesla simply because their design and lack of quality control disqualifies them. With Hyundai/Kia coming out with alternatives, and others, there are choices. They may not be as efficient, but they shine in areas where Tesla doesn't.

Idk man this review sounded pretty biased. Seemed to gloss over all the benefits the Tesla had while honing in on the small upsides to the other two.
I understand you might have personal biases for what makes a car better, but some of the largest factors for buying a car are things like charging speed, range, acceleration, handling, cargo + frunk space, safety rating, driver assistance systems, features included for free with the base model, etc. which are _all_ in favor of the Model Y.
The thing is, I don’t even disagree with a lot of the advantages you discussed here for the other two, they surely have some benefits over the tesla, but you really seemed to brush off all these major upsides for the tesla and focus primarily on the minor benefits of the Mach-e and ID.4
We are a show focused on driving and involvement, so that is where our comments are directed. But we discussed the superiority of Teslas range, charging network, and software in this piece. Sorry it didn’t resonate with you when we did. Meanwhile, the Tesla was chosen over the ID4 by one of our hosts for many of the reasons you wanted mentioned. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Watch Sandy Munro’s RUclips channel if you want to see an in depth tear down and technical review of these evs. The tesla gets top marks. The mach e gets criticized heavily for its battery cooling system’s overly complicated design and potential for leaks because of all the components and hoses (and added weight). Ford still has one foot in the past.
Sandy is in bed with Elon Musk. He’s not gonna say anything bad about the Tesla. His input is irrelevant to 99% of EV buyers.

The Model Y is butt ugly and its build quality sucks, compared to the Mach-E and even to Tesla Model 3. And I used to own a 2020 Model Y, but traded in and now drive an awesome and gorgeous Mach-E GT.

Great and fair test, I’ve enjoyed it, thanks (ID.4 owner). Only one thing: the ID.4 is far cheaper.
After sales taxes and government rebate it's somewhere between 15K and 20K. I drove Model Y and ID4. Ended up with ID4 didn't feel Model Y was worth the difference.
Let's see how long the Ford and VW hold up. Being the first build, they are bound to have problems. I agree that fit and finish are not great with my Model Y but, they were fixed the first day. I've had it for a year now coming from a Lexus RX350F which I really liked. I have to say, I would not go back to the Lexus or any ICE car. I do agree that I would love to see a heads up display and my wife would really love an O'Shit handle because the car is so damn fast. I've grown accustom to the minimalist interior now and use the auto drive more and more. Touching the wheel every 30 seconds is still better than having to steer the car for long periods of time on a long trip. It doesn't handle great but, it is still as good as my Lexus RX350F was. The charging network and software are leaps and bounds above the competition. I have only on 2 occasions had range anxiety because I forgot to charge my car. If you drive around town like a normal person, you will get the mileage or maybe more. Freeway over 70, mileage drops off about a 3rd. Using the Tesla Superchargers take about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the charge you need and they are everywhere. The Tesla comes with entertainment options while you wait or you can just go grab a snack and by the time you return, you will be ready to go. As far as styling, I still think the Y is a much better looking vehicle than the other two. I've leased and owned multiple different brands of cars over the past 30 years, and I can honestly say that the Tesla is my favorite of all of them.
Ford for the win!
Both the ID.4 and the Mach-E were very close in my thinking, but I ultimately decided on the AWD ID.4. I just have a bit more of a European bent when it comes to cars, I suppose.
The mach-e was at a disadvantage with my memories of nightmarish Ford buttons and unnecessary glitz and middle-america gadgetry in many previous models. The Mach-E felt a bit overbuilt in terms of component upsizing to make-up for deficiencies. I didn't want to spend the money when I knew full well that in ~5 years or so EVs will go through another two major generational shifts in battery technology. We'll be replacing my wife's vehicle about then.
I'm old enough now that I don't really feel the need to go 154 mph down I-5 at 2am in the morning any more. Comfort is important. Design is important. Build quality is important. My family comes from a sports-car background, so decent responsiveness and acceleration is important. But it doesn't have to ride low and it doesn't have to be as sporty as I would have required in past years. Ridiculous acceleration (aka Tesla) is not important.
I was never much interested in the Tesla (despite being a techie, the build quality, ride, and a host of other factors made it a no-go for me). I don't like locked-in ecosystems for anything, and I really hate the whole concept of software locks on hardware that is perfectly capable of doing something just to squeeze more money out of customers. Like for example, when during recent hurricanes Tesla 'unlocked' features for drivers in those zones that should have never been locked in the first place. It just bent me the wrong way. Throw in the poor build quality and horrid interior and it was just never in the running for me.
So I put in the reservation well over a year ago for the AWD ID.4 and only just recently took delivery. And I'm very happy with that choice.
Now the ID.4's software and capacitive button quirks are well documented on countless respected youtube channels, but they were never bad enough to change my choice. As an owner, I can reiterate that view. Sure, I have a long wish list of fixes I'd like VW to make. But none of them are show-stoppers. Just little annoyances. Clearly Tesla's software and its software engineering update cycles are far superior. The other car makers are still in the stone-age and need to play catch-up. I'm willing to give VW the time to work through the quirks. The capacitive buttons aren't all that bad... some work extremely well, such as the volume and temperature controls and the skylight curtain slider. Others, not so well. Not unusable, just not as convenient as they should be. Quirky :-)
I would say that really... between the AWD and the RWD ID.4, its gotta be the AWD ID.4. The extra power and regen makes a for a completely different driving experience. Instead of feeling a bit underpowered with the RWD, the AWD feels like it has that little bit of extra that you usually don't need to dip into. The regen braking is far better (it still doesn't come to a complete stop but two motors doing regen is a big deal). It doesn't feel sludgy off the mark. It accelerates through turns very nicely. It is clear that VW's hardware and engineering is up to the task so a few software cycles (assuming they can pull that off) will probably be a game-changer for anyone still on the fence.
I don't need a Frunk. I don't even WANT a frunk. There is plenty of cargo space, I don't need more. I love the ID.4's interior spaces, particularly the night lighting. The LED headlights (etc) are to die for. Really well done, I didn't even realize the headlights were following my turns it was so smooth! Yah, I got the full package. I love the exterior look, particularly at night. VW has done a slam-bang job in my view.
Of course, everyone will have their own opinions and their own picks. Those are mine. It would be a dull world if everyone thought in lock-step :-).

I've put on 13k miles on my FE ID.4 since July '21 and love the car! No issues or major complaints. We should be getting an update late spring early summer with some added features, and potentially getting a vehicle to home (bi-directional) charging, which is awesome!

I like Matt Farah's idea that Ford should offer a "Pony Delete" option for the Mach-E which would remove all of the mustang badges. Out of the 3 I like the Ford the most - but would probably end up buying the VW on price point alone.

I find Monroe to be too biased for my liking. He liked the VW ID.4's motor and praised German engineering...then proceeded to just trash the car cause it wasn't a Tesla. I find Out of Spec Reviews to be more informative and honest in their comparisons of EV's. Again IMHO.

Great review. Makes one think. Without a doubt electrics coming. 44,000 minus soon to be Federal tax credit of 7,500 = 37,000 for cheapest. What I fear happens to people that need to buy vehicles less than 30,000 or God forbid 25,000? Are we leaving them out in cold?
Teslas work because infrastructure, and because most people buying them are the leading edge of technology class and probably can afford even a second car. The rest of population have a huge reckoning when electric is their first and lack Tesla fans commitment and infrastructure and funding.
I was waiting to see what the Build Back Better was going to offer as incentives to EV purchases. Looking (at the time) low/mid-40's for the Model 3 Long Range, minus $7,500 which would have put me in the mid/upper 30's, just a little more then we paid for my wife's van in 2017. But then Tesla did the most Tesla thing ever and jacked their prices up so it is almost the same net to me (I would have to make large sacrifices in order to make the payments) .
Remember that Tesla dropped their prices after they no longer qualified for the last Subsidy. As soon as the new one was getting ready yo pass the house, they hit the Model 3 for +2K and then +1K. Of course demand is up for their vehicles so the law of supply and demand says that the prices need to go up.
I think that the government would do better telling the manufacturers/dealers that they can sell the vehicle for X dollars and have the buyer go online and fill out the documents with the government and then have the vehicle delivered to the dealer for the purchaser to pick up. This would ensure that price structing is fare for the buyer and the buyer is restricted on what they can buy as an approved vehicle and all the tax documents would be up to date. Instead a lot of dealers will match what Tesla just did and also jack up their prices. I believe that the dealers are adding an additional $2,500 to every new vehicle because supply is low.
One other negative thing about Tesla, there appears to be some collusion between Tesla and Carvana. Check out the prices for used Tesla and you will see that a used 2018 Model 3 is more expensive than a new Model 3, same with Model Y (which are in a 6 month delay for delivery so that sort of makes sense). Carvana has some real bait and switch things going on. Carvana is listing on EBay and AutoTrader and they are keeping the prices artificially high across every platform. I would love to see in the future what their game is. This is the pump portion of the pump and dump scam.
the incentive should not be on EV purchases, but for companies to build charging networks. That is what is needed to make this conversion to EV use. All the manufacturers like Tesla are doing is jacking up prices so they can pocket the money, not make EV's cheaper/more accessible to ordinary people. They already have profit margins of 30% (they brag about) and yet they have raised prices around $10k on most models in the past year in anticipation of the tax incentives coming.

America became the best country not because of the goverment but because of the private sector being left alone by the goverment. @@allenbaylus1912 well the Build Back Better plan was killed my Sinema and Manchin, and with the global supply crisis and chip shortage, car prices having been going up exponentially. Since February of last year, a Model 3 SR+ went from $37k-ish to almost $45k.
What's worse is that they're still not even meeting the demand meaning that despite the price increase people are still buying them so there's no incentive for Tesla to lower the prices. Companies like Ford and VW are seeing the same thing and might just do the same thing which would hurt a lot of people in my opinion

Some of the Tesla models are only a month or two delayed. Others are a year out.
For Example Model 3 LR and Performance are March. M3 Standard is June.
Model Y Performance is March and MY LR is June.
Model S Plaid is 4-8 weeks. MS is July.
Model X Plaid is Oct and Model X is Jan 2023.
I am unsure of the waiting time for the Lightning - I know that Ford said that they are planning on making twice as many as they were originally planning on - one would assume that it was due to the high demand if this model.
Who knows for sure when the Silverado EV will be coming out.
Rivian RT1 is due March 22.
Excellent review guys. Refreshing to hear what real cars guys think vs. a biased brand fanboy. My heart tells me the Mach E but my pragmatic me tells me Tesla, both for all the reasons you both spelled out. Fortunately for me, I despise SUVs and want a sedan so my only real choice at this point is Tesla model 3. If only the Genesis G70 was an EV. Build that with the first 6speed manual trans in an EV and I'll cash in my retirement and buy one. Fortunately, that will never happen.
Is the Mach E door button touch sensitive? If so, will it work in the rain or if your hand is wet? Both my Focus and Escape has touch sensitive keypads that becomes useless if its wet, when you are more than likely need it to open quickly... I don't get it why all the reviewers BSing about the lack of frunk on ID4. Aren't any one see how short the nose and overhang are on ID4 comparing to Tesla and MachE? This is also why ID4 has awesome turning radius.
The door buttons are not touch sensitive. You have to push the button in to open the door. The door has a safety feature when opened slightly you can't close the door until it is fully opened. This is so you won't get your fingers smashed if you have it in the opening and accidentally body the door shut.
It is always difficult for someone who has spent their time in one technology to review a shift. I remember people reviewing the iPhone and criticizing the lack of keyboard, lack of a pullout antenna and how dirty the screen will be after a days use. I do agree that the build quality on the Tesla is behind the big boys but the speed that is improving is amazing. I also want to differentiate Teslas and Electric cars, one is about a different way of transporting, the other is about a change in power train. Reviewing a Tesla with the rules created over one hundred years will mislead you. Ask yourself, why did Tesla force the industry to change? I don’t think it was about the power train, I think they realized the car as we know it is about to change forever. Keep in mind, we are at the beginning of the new hundred year journey.
I keep tossing that idea around in my mind. The dinosaur was fine until the comet/meteor came and changed everything.
Look at cell phones pre-Apple. Job's designed and assembled it (Samsung copied his idea as he was using them as a supplier at the time). Every phone from then foreword is borrowing from that single idea - that you cant design buttons for a function which has not even been though of yet. And the phone plus the software competed the package.
I spoke with developers back in the day and they said that they like to program for the iOS platform because it had a limited number of variables (processor type, graphic resolutions) and Android was the wild west. Almost 10 years later I am sure that there are a multitude of variables that they hadn't even considered at the time.
Every phone since the iPhone 4 which has been released has been the iPhone killer. Some do an antiquate job of mimicking the function but I have yet to see one which changes peoples perceptions as quickly as the first generations. Everyone else played catch up (they were mostly still making flip phones or the small phones with the rubber antenna bump).

I remember many of those enthusiastic in technology seeing the iPhone for the first time realizing it was about to change phones for the better. There was a few that i remember resisting the change, but that was mostly driving by their hatred for Apple at that time.

As a pure EV play, Tesla was and STILL IS the only EV producer that appears to understand... Charging infrastructure is THE limiting factor in EV growth today. At some point in the future, global lithium supply will become the number one hurdle. How soon???
After watching Munro & Associates tear apart these cars, I can't image anyone every voluntarily buying a non-Tesla BEV. The tech/engineering choices are so bad in the Ford/Bolt/VW by comparison. Who wants a car put out by a company that was forced to do something versus one that is doing it because they want to/because it's the right thing to do. Don't get me started on the Electrify America fiasco that defines VW's foray into BEVs. That whole system was designed to be terrible, especially over the long term, and so far it looks like it's succeeding. What are the expansion plans for the EA network? How are they making the network more user friendly / better? How are they improving the user interface at the charge stations themselves? What's that, there are no plans...hmmm. Compare that to the Supercharger network, that is constantly increasing the rate of expansion as well as periodically increasing the charge rate meanwhile expanding to non-Tesla vehicles... because it's helpful. There is no user interface at a Supercharger, because they don't need one.
HUD 🤦♂️🤷♂️ Short term - HUDs are cool and hip and desirable, especially for a channel called Everyday Driver. I can see desire for a heads up display based on the channel name and the idea that people like to drive vehicles...but again, Tesla will have made the heads up display irrelevant vis a vis FSD. I know, I know... I can hear the nay-sayers now: "it's in beta", and "it's only L2", etcetera. Yeah, that's all correct, until it's not. Are they late on it? Yes. Again, the rapid rate of improvement is accelerating exponentially.
These guys are light weights compared to Sandy. Reviews that majored in the minors. Big market and room for many voices, but I disagree with their assessments.
Can’t agree completely. The Mustang has a planetary gear system and a super strong chassis. I think it is a decent alternative to the Y.

I liked your comparo. Here's my gripe. I'll feel much better when the technology improves to provide a major league bump in mileage per charge (MPC). I like the Mustang but not if they can't surpass 300 miles during the four seasons (Full range of temps.). My sister's new Y down in Fla is awesome. I drove it two weeks ago.
I'm pretty excited for EVs. Not great everything is a CUV at the moment but that seems to be changing. Glad to see more non-Teslas. Hopefully that'll make charging infrastructure improve. It's terrible in the UK
I was never a car guy. I still don’t think I am. However, I’ve always liked technology. Did they mention teslas charging network? Did I miss that? teslas charging network is far superior to any charging network. It almost makes all other EVs useless beyond driving around your home. Teslas are far superior in so many other ways too. It’s over the air update are amazing. It’s like getting a new car every few months. The FSD works on any road. Not just pre mapped highways. It works in city traffic and highways as well. Owning a Tesla is as transformative as it was going from a dumb phone to a smart phone. Tesla is the iPhone as Ford and Volvo are the Nokias and Blackberries
The charging network was discussed more than once and a supercharger station was also shown. It is definitely the best thing about Tesla ownership and that and the software were mentioned as well. Sorry you missed it.
Cars are more than software updates. You have the same body of the car and the same suspension and other mechanical calibrations. Look at the Model S. There's a big difference between the updated interior and the older one. The hardware is not updated, only the software. It's true it controls some aspects of the car, but not all.
I really like all three of these. My friend has the ID 4 and I like it. Interior is kind of bland but I was impressed with the tech's. I like the many colors of the Mach E and the style. Always been Ford people in my family so that gives a little more bias. But I'd probably go Tesla Y because it's a Tesla. More range and more charging stations, however I'm leaving California soon so I don't know what it will be like in Idaho where they hate EV's. Lol Thank you for the interesting review. There's quite a big price difference between the three cars.
I dunno. I drove the Mach e and the Model Y. The VW isn't a consideration. The Ford is incredibly good. It is more solid than any Ford I've ever been in. But it does't drive as sporty as a base-level Model Y, and much less sporty than the Performance Y. It's also not really a crossover because it's actually lower to the ground than most sedans because of the battery. The interior is very good, but too conventional. The touchscreen graphics are dated and the responsiveness was laggy. The fake engine noise was stupid. The ride of the Y is not as subtle as the Mach e... it's stiff with the standard wheels and downright harsh with the performance wheels. But I completely disagree that it rolls or feels top heavy. Particularly because that's what I thought about the Ford. Makes me wonder what the results would have been if Tesla ran advertising on the MT network. In the end I ordered a Model Y... haven't received it yet. Maybe in February. It's a better crossover, is engineered more intelligently in many ways, performs better and has a vastly better charging network.

Three EVs reviewed as if they were performance ICE cars. These are electric SUVs whose owners probably have no clue what steering feel even means. No mention of DC charging at all either.
Range is the most improtant with infrastructure second. Personality really doesn't come into play for every day cars. I had a good friend, loves the environment, bought a Leaf, with a little over 100 mile range (may have been first generation). she gave it up. Bought a minivan. she likes to go to trails, and told me the Leaf just could not do it. When it comes to every day use, range and infrastructure is where Tesla rules.
Tesla rules on range? Not. In real world testing the Mustang wins on range hands down. When it comes to everyday use, most EV owners charge at home, so infrastructure charging system does not even come into play.
what they don't tell you is that they recommend only charging your Tesla to 80% for everyday use to prolong the life of the battery. So instantly, my "real world" range in my LR M3 goes from 360 miles to 288 miles. It's still plenty for around town driving and short trips to neighboring towns. all my charging is done at home, over night, as it's the most convenient. other than on long trips, I can't envision using a charging station.

Hal never blinked. He was just a red light. I think the red light was supposed to be a camera but they didn't know what digital cameras would look like. An optical engineer could have told you that any camera is going to be dark when you look into the lens.
Just a random fact: There are multilateral treaties that have forced countries to progressively increase taxes on automaker fleets based on their CO2 emissions for ages. Automakers were always going to start building more environmentally friendly vehicles at this point.
I have 3 gripes with the Mach E. The performance model power being limited. Charging after 90% on road trips being an issue (watch marques brownie episodes), not having as much space as the Model Y. I own a Tesla Model Y but want other car companies to get better. Not a fan boi
They have already improved the charging speed at higher % with a software update (OTA)
Power even after being limited is in excess of 300hp, so wouldn't call that an issue unless you take your car to a track
white plastic buttons are a bad idea. if you've ever gone to a friend's house and were handed a gamer gunked up white box 360 controller you know what I mean. and I don't have high hopes for this white seat trend.
You guys needed to talk more about tech as perspective. I have 2019 Ford… dealers can’t find the faults but constantly check engine light comes on! One less problem with EVs… it’s the future!

Any time someone start complaining about issues with electric card and infrastructure ask them how perfect it was when the model T rolled off the line with 30 miles to the gallon and gas stations were everywhere?
I pick Mach-E, ID.4 then Model Y.
Ford has added so much personality here despite the EVness, and Ford has done a great job managing new age tech with some semblence of usability.
The ID.4 is pretty much a lot of new age VW in a SUV package - it isn't as forthcoming or usable as a Tiguan which is annoying and the VW group cost cutting effort is on clear display, but the platform is a great start.
As for the Model Y, it really is just a raised Model 3 that still has all of the issues of Teslas and now in 2022 as CCS chargers now are outnumbering Superchargers, and the fact Tesla is a staunch anti Right-to-repair company with a massively toxic fanbase propped up by an egotistical CEO above every decision they make, it is one of the few cars I truly detest on the market.

For next to no money it is now possible to buy a replacement front fascia Binnacle including electronic display for your Tesla model three model Y and it is even relatively easy to self install
Great comparison - and fully agree with the outcome. I do believe that VW is going to be a winner with next iterations. They do know how to build the Peoples Car and through the cousins (Audi + Porsche) new technology will come down to the masses - fast. And creating a UI is a lot easier than building quality cars......
Tesla has been responsible for forcing other companies to reconsider their product lineup? And here I was thinking it was all the environment regulations that governments were passing that literally say past X year you can't sell an IC car. But we'll go with Tesla.

i wanted to get a Model Y but the recent price increases have effectively priced me out of the Tesla range and for the money there are just too many compromises for me to justify the pricetag when the Ioniiq5 and EV6 are coming or even the Mach-E

Thanks for yet another great video. Model Y owner here. You missed talking about one foot driving. I have only tried the Tesla and I love how it brakes when you release the gas pedal. Would be interesting to know if the others have made the same thing. And also: I have owned 3 Teslas. And I love the quality of them. Also what's not mention is that when there is a problem, you just book a service appointment in the App. Add a few photos and Tesla take care of the rest. They are light years before all other brands I used to own (Porsche, BMW and Volvo).
We discussed the 1 pedal driving in the Ford and the VW and compared it to Tesla, who is the standard. Sorry you didn't notice that, but it's in there. Great comparison. I've been driving an ID4 for 2 years: (I am not a sporty driver, but not slow either) I like the driving experience. It drives like a VW Passat, a family car. BUT build quality is BAD! In the those 2 years, an arm rest broke of. Passenger window motor broke down and had to be replace. Light-strip on the booth came loose. Still now the center console crashes at least once a month. My car has been serviced in the shop many times (recalls,fixes,updates). The last one, a month ago, it took 4 days for a software update. And when I left the shop, they made me make a new appointment for a new software update this month... And I lost all my settings in the car after this last update... The controls underneath the screen are not lighted so invisible at night. I often have to retry several times to open the car with my key. The remote control (like preheating) from the app often doesn't work. I could go on, but you get the idea. We needed a new car for my wife, so last week we bought a mustang mach e long range RWD. Never an VW ID again. It's ok to drive with but quality is BAD. This is not up to VW standards

I’m really excited for, and am very interested in the upcoming Cadillac Lyriq. It is the only electric car that makes me go “wow! I want one of those!” And I really do want one. It is a beautiful looking thing both on the exterior and interior, it’s an achingly gorgeous car. The grill on the front of it is made up entirely of lights, which means that unlike a Tesla it actually looks like a car we grew up with, yet it’s still modern and forward looking. And on the inside, it’s still a Cadillac. It’s got beautiful wooden trim, a panoramic sunroof, and All four seats in it are heated, cooled, and even have massage settings. I absolutely love the Lyriq and I really want one.
dont be surprised if it hits the market at $85 (well equipped)

I test drove id4, it is so quiet and smooth, I'm waiting to drive the Toyota bz4x, ioniq5, and then I'll make my decision next year.
Toyota and Suburu are almost the same. It looks so, I don't know, well, like a Rav 4. But it may drive well. The Ioniq 5 is very cool looking. I think the iD4 is very interesting and VW came out with the mild, family-friendly version first. And I disagree with the tester. I don't think VW is that concerned with Tesla. VW is not only VW, they're a family of cars that include Porsche and Audi.
Only one of these is producing hundreds of thousands, only one of these has a reliable charging infrastructure, only one of these has full autonomy capability, only one of this summons to you, only one of these has full power not limited to a few seconds boost
Why do they call these SUV's? They are four door hatchbacks. Only the VW has any resemblance to an SUV.
I'd like to see a real EV SUV in something like a Jeep or the new Bronco or a Tahoe, 4 Runner, etc.
the big SUV's will go electric in a few years. the days of people tolerating 10 mpg in an Escalade/Navigator are about over. people still want big cars though - and the luxury that the EV drivetrain would provide, and the economy, would be appreciated in these behemoths. If you like SUV's, I'd suggest looking at the Rivian one, it's got some good specs and is styled/sized like a Range Rover.
