Hope everyone is having a great Holiday week! We've been so excited to get this video posted and there was a little bit of fun shade being thrown around because, we just wanted to clarify, the Model Y Performance belongs to our editor and friend Rob, while the Mach E GT Performance belongs to Sofyan and his partner. We were a little short of time when filming this but we will plan to do a real world range test on both models in the Spring. Which one do you think actually goes farther on a full charge in the real world? Also, expect us to do a comparison test with the Ioniq 5 sometime early next year!

Your reviews are usually spot on and unbiased but this time a little bit of bias showed through. A 0-60 time of 3.4 vs. 4.0 is not "a smidge" faster. Then later on you said that the 2 cars are neck to neck up to 60mph when the Ford starts cutting power. They can't be neck to neck if one does 3.4 and the other 4.0. They are neck to neck when the Ford starts before the Tesla.

I felt the bias by a huge margin with nearly each comment. Wish he had even considered having someone else review the Tesla (Rob) alongside him in this situation. I love redline reviews but this didn't give me a single sense of an unbiased comparison - even when clear cut facts don't line up.
He also just didn't seem to be able to talk about the many many options I'm reading about for modifications to the Tesla (like the frunk can be modded as a cooler)

One topic you never brought up is the huge advantage of the Tesla Supercharging Network. I have bought the new Tesla CCS adapter so I can charge using almost any non-Tesla charger like Electrify America and I can verify that the Tesla Superchargers are much easier and less prone to hardware and software errors that plague Electrify America charging. The extra time I spent in trying to get my credit cards to work with the EA system really adds up and increases my charge time as well as many EA chargers are only 50 kw which is nearly always slower than any Tesla supercharger. Until the Supercharger is fixed on non-Tesla chargers I would have to say the Model Y always wins on the comparison for doing road trips.

    • @lucass8119
      @lucass8119 Год назад

Certainly I think the vast majority of drivers will not notice or care for a half second difference in straight line performance. Tesla always uses their straight line performance as a convenient crutch, but in actuality it makes little to no difference in driving experience. I sort of think every "negative" thing about Tesla is instantly dismissed by many because "ohhh performance!" but truly all electric vehicles are very fast. Faster than vehicles of those sizes have any right to be. You won't notice the marginal performance gain, and once you discount performance you soon realize Tesla has next to nothing going for it over competitors. Luckily, Supercharging network is a big deal otherwise Tesla would be pushed out of the market.
I think its important to note though that the Mach E is nothing too impressive either. Certainly Hyundai and KIA are pushing out higher quality cars that are more practical for most people. If I had to choose between a Model Y and a Mach E, I'd choose the model Y. But a Model Y versus an Ioniq 5? Hands down goes to Hyundai.

Did I miss your unbiased review/comparison/locations of robust and fast charging networks, of which is significant if ones plans a vacation trip or lives in an apartment/condo? Also, ½ second from 0-60 is quite material if you watch racing channels, not just close as you mention. You seemed to miss the total vehicle remote control, sentry mode, etc via mobile app for both, also tow option/capacity, snow features, etc... Not a bad initial comparison but I feel that you wanted to only compare what the Mustang has, not what Tesla has above and beyond the Ford.

Half second is only a huge difference when you’re racing. When you’re cross shopping a half second is not big enough of a difference, they’re both essentially offering similar performance in the real world.
I think some Tesla fans just want to be told over and over that their charging network can’t be beat, or that their battery density is ahead of competitors, when they should be as majority of Tesla competitors are just getting started.

I have a MY and love it but I really love the Mach E's exterior styling, especially in that gorgeous blue colour. The interior though doesn't feel as modern or futuristic as Tesla's, including the seats. The Ford's interior could be that of any other ICE cars so the uniqueness is not there. Great comparison. I'm not a big fan of the Tesla styling but as far as straight line performance it's not even a close comparison. A .5s from 0-60 is a huge gap. The range test can be done in various conditions including cold weather and warm weather as long as they're the same condition for both cars. That would be interesting to see how they perform in various condition. Thanks for the video!

Both great cars. I came down pretty much where you did -- the Y might be slightly ahead overall on the measurable metrics and has better software too, but the MME is close in all the ways that matter to me, and so much prettier and more distinctive. Still, if I could've gotten a Y Performance and been able to avail myself of the tax credit it would've been a closer thing.
One big difference in the buying and ownership experiences is that the Tesla experience is more or less uniform while the Ford experience is *extremely* dependent on the dealership you're dealing with. I'm glad Ford's making its way into the EV market but Tesla has the legacy manufacturers by the balls. Batteries. It's all about the batteries. All the legacy makers can whip up all the concepts and copycats they want but they dont have the batteries. They're all scrambling to find a third party to supply them with batteries meanwhile Tesla is manufacturing their own and using their "overvalued" market cap to buy up the remaining third party supply. This is the key to EV success, Elon knows it and so does the rest of the auto industry. I agree that Tesla's auto design needs improvment but as far as manufacturing and the business end goes, they are strangling legacy manufacturers with their own outdated business model. Another factor kneecapping the legacys is the fact that they need to commit a massive amount of resources to their existing ICE models while Tesla can put everything they have into EVs. Also, Tesla isnt just an auto manufacturer, they're investing major capital in industrial and residential solar power/battery solutions, HVAC systems and comunications infrastructure. Tesla is linked to SpaceX where the two companies are complimenting each others technologies. The vertical integration employed by Tesla is light years ahead of any other auto manufacturer. It feels eerily like when the original iPhone was introduced. People are complaining about their physical buttons missing on Teslas. I remember missing buttons on my phone too... at least for a second.

I have test driven the standard versions of both these cars and the ride and interior design of the Tesla were a hard no for me. The regular version of the Ford had a slight hesitation when accelerating which made it also a definite no as were the seats which i could not get comfortable in. As a mustang Saleen owner i really dont mind the fact the Mach'e is designated as a mustang. if it helps with sales and the uplifting on the name im all for it. Now that said.. years ago i was staunchly against any non 2 door sports car being called a mustang. And many people wanted the mustang to go 4 doors. I thought such people were nuts, looking to destroy the brand, it didnt make sense back then, but today it sorta does, why? because i understand the mach-e is and isnt a real mustang. OK its like this. The car.. the standard sedan be it luxury 2 door 4 door hatchback you name it is mostly an obsolete vehicle in the eyes of the buying masses. That spot has been taken over by the SUV and for good reason, you get alot more for your dollar. More space better seating equal gas mileage, and sometimes equal or even better performance. No its not a sports car, but for average sales an suv will sell better and that makes for a healthier company and brand. SO.. go ahead call this mach-e a mustang, as its name should be represented in that class of vehicles. so yes its a mustang twice removed so to speak. But we all know what the real mustang is. And we also know its under threat by the signs of the times. global warming, inflation, pollution restrictions. Many of the things that makes a mustang great will not be welcomed in the near future, as such even the mustang sports car will undergo change. Likely going first hybrid and later full EV. And at best the old venerable V8 will be a pollution taxed limited run offering. And who knows how long that will last with the younger generations and their particular likes and dislikes towards a V8 versus Electric propulsion. time will tell. so i say let the Mustang mach-e fight the good fight and become a great vehicle in its own right. but we also must be mindful for the future of the real mustang.

Was considering a Mach E and even placed an order on one before researching all the problems with fast charging compatibility errors. That, decreased range, and inferior performance vs. Tesla was a no-go. Plus Tesla’s interior is slightly updated for 2021 (matte black vs gloss black) and constant software updates make it a more compelling case, not to mention unrivaled Tesla network chargers. And I’m willing to bet that a Tesla MY LR with performance boost will keep up with, if not exceed, the Mach E GT Performance. And Ford doesn’t exactly have the best reputation for reliability plus first 1-2 years of a new vehicle will always have bugs that may be corrected in future years (ie Tesla’s build quality, while still not stellar, has improved in recent years)
I do concede that the Mach E’s interior looks more premium and wish that Tesla had Apple Car Play compatibility and XM Radio. And the Mach E definitely looks less generic but I would argue more polarizing. The Tesla MY’s proportions just don’t look as good vs. M3 (almost like the Tesla is a bloated M3).
If you don’t need an SUV (let’s face it, sedans are more fun to drive due to center of gravity), go for the Tesla M3 LR and get the performance boost. At around $53K, that’s the more compelling choice IMO.

@@theredline Did you actually pay MSRP? I thought Ford dealerships were adding $10K to the sticker price. Did you have to negotiate? Does it help to be a RUclipsr?😉

Not sure why everyone is so offended by Ford using the mustang name. The future is electric. Many countries are banning petrol/diesel cars. If mustang doesn’t go electric it will die off.

Very good description and comparison video !
I have both on order, Model Y coming in November and Mach E coming in July next year.
I will decide next year which to buy when Mach E is due for delivery :))

Sure, I’m a bit bias. That said, I do like the exterior styling of the Mach E and I agree Tesla should have done a bit more to make the Performance model stand out. That said, I also enjoy the “sleeper” 🤣 aspect. I can also hand it for Ford for built quality, and that comes with experience.
Now, all that said, Tesla is also heavily invested in Software. We were just provided a massive software update that added new features, restructured UI and some of Tesla’s signature new goodies. And similar to iPhones, Teslas will only get better over time purely through frequent software updates (also pushed OTA).
It’s highly unlikely Ford will make any significant improvements with software. But will be interesting to see. Should you have a software update, will it come OTA or will you have to take it to Ford? Will your average tech or salesman know about these updates?
Finally, when it comes to Full Self Driving, I’m in the beta and I can say it’s already impressive. It has a way to go, but the pace of improvement is massive and I think this will be a very different discussion even next year.

Interface on the Mach-E is laggy and power doesn’t hold beyond five seconds which is a real bummer. Model Y performance is still the better overall vehicle and experience, especially on road trips.

You commented that Tesla did not change the nose of the Y, why would they ? At 0.23 it has a fantastic drag coefficient, the Mustang Mach E Gt has 0.30 no where near as good. And all the fake styling nods on the Mustang create air turbulence and collect bulbs and debris… the model Y performance blows the Mustang away …

I love the mach E but i would never get it for the simple fact it has a speed limiter

I didn't hear you mention the tire size on the GT. I was behind one yesterday and they really looked skinny. The car itself looks very narrow from behind like it would tip over during an aggressive turn.
