This was probably your best video. Not just the added benefit of it being a comparison but the more frequent edits and camera angels made it much more enjoyable. The effort was noticed and appreciated
It's really so difficult to test drive the Volkswagen without the sales people harassing me. Thanks to Alex and his reviews. He shows pretty much like the test drive I would do at the dealership. I think these pushy sales people are the main reason many opt to get Teslas instead.
Alex is the best reviewer for actual car shoppers. Great real-life comparisons on actual practical matters. Must watch for buyers. This a great video for folks considering either of these vehicles.
No mention of the fact the US version has lots of missing features from the European version, including less paint options, no 3D HUD, no heat pump, no Matrix LEDs, no 3D matrix rear lights. As an aside those pointless ugly orange reflector strips on the wheel arches North American markets insist on.
I especially like the fact that he is EV savvy. So many reviewers trip over aspects of electric cars that are just not a problem for me with my EVs. I need a car reviewer that knows EVs. Alex is good at this.

@@brownro214 They are getting close though. The range and the tech in these Tesla competitors are getting there. The main advantage to Tesla's is the Supercharger network. Either way, I think it is important to have competition and people need to realise that the Tesla isn't the only option.
I test drove the ID.4 last week (in Europe) and the one I drove had brake hold. You get a heat pump in the ID.4 in the higher trim versions and in the lower trim versions it's optional (about $650 option).
The Mach E is inspired heavily by the Ford Evos concept model that was displayed around 2010. Ford used a lot of styling cues from that concept in recent years, but the Mach E is the closest thing you’ll see.
It boggles the mind that we're still dealing with laggy entertainment systems on new cars after all these years. Targeting the electronics for the relatively static software that goes in cars isn't rocket science, and there's really no excuse for not building something that is absolutely responsive 99% of the time.
@@alwaysiyi272 Maybe so, but that is so counterproductive. A faster processor would cost how much per car? $100? I’d pay that to not have a laggy frustrating infotainment system. It is a penny wise and pound foolish decision.

"...The Mach-E "has this angry handlebar mustache going on..." Now I have to clean the coffee I spit up all over my screen! As usual, a tremendously informative review. I have to say if I were seriously in the market I'd have to pull out a spreadsheet and go slowly through the video to construct a point-by-point checklist to make a decision. As a GTI owner living in Washington State I tend to prioritize handling over straight line acceleration so my ultimate preference might go to the ID.4. But I'm very impressed by the job Ford has done in the initial incarnation of the Mach-E. Frankly, I didn't think they had it in 'em. Of course the elephant in the room is Tesla. And I have tremendous respect for Musk & Co's efforts to design and build not only several compelling automobiles but the even more challenging job of successfully building an automotive manufacturer from scratch. No one else has managed to do that in America since well before WWII. (e.g. noble failures like Kaiser and Tucker.) But while pioneers are deservedly lauded they're frequently long term failures. (e.g. Nikola Tesla.) The jury's still out on Tesla's challenges in terms of fit/finish and building a service and repair network to match mainstream manufacturers like Ford and VW. I wish Tesla the best of luck but many consumers are likely to opt for more familiar nameplates. And ultimately the future of EVs is in the hands of those automakers.
Mainstream manufacturers have the advantage of making EVs that are much less weird to own and operate and do not project the cultish image of an Elon stan. I did not even consider Tesla when EV shopping because of the brand image, the lack of Carplay, the build quality, the awful soft paint that makes PPF mandatory (assuming the car is completely painted at all), and the unpredictable performance in terms of range and power that only meets advertised specs under very specific circumstances. And that's not even talking about $10,000 in tax credits where I live.

VW was very nice, test drove one earlier last week. It was very. Comfortable and quiet, Great headroom at 6’3”. Havent tried the mach-e yet, recently bought the ModelY
Excellent review. Tires aside, I love styling of MachE. Shape of front fender and hood are very appealing to me. Interior design is a winner. I am waiting for Tesla Y to give me heads up display or instrument cluster like MachE and better build quality like the Ford. Will buy in another year or so.
My son just purchased a premium Awd Mach E. After taking my opportunity to test drive his Mach E. From your review and seeing the VW. I would pick the Ford hands down in overall styling and performance. Looking at the VW. It looks like a VW used an SUV and made an EV. The interior was bland in the VW. Batteries under the hood seems strange. When I drove my son's Mustang Mach E premium Awd. It was fantastic. I was surprised at it's performance and charging time was more than exceptable. It's ride and handling was great. Hands free driving is currently being offered thru Ford with a download. You mentioned the Frunk. The Frunks deviders are removable and had a removable drain plug if you want to ice down some cold ones at a tailgate party. The Ford is sexy and imo, I feel handles amazing. If you looked at your Mach E. I don't think you'll find the ford name. I believe Ford will eventually make the Mustang it's own brand within the Ford motor company. Many people like myself have owned several Mustangs and love them. The Mustang Mach E opens a new Mustang consumer market that wants a Mustang, but need four doors and a usable rear seats. I'm one of those customers.
In Europe the ID.4 comes standard with auto-hold. Got my car early January, happy with it, but consumption is a bit high (as a result of lower temperatures). I hope this improves in spring and summer. Auto-coasting is also part of my car provided you put it in either Eco or comfort mode. In sports mode it does regen braking when lifting off your foot from the pedal. The ID.4 als comes with a kind of auto pilot, even, which I think works very well. In addition it has a function that auto-brakes for curves and roundabouts, even in non-auto pilot mode. The infotainment is indeed very laggy and sub-standard (with Software 0783 aka ME2.0), version 0793 (or 2.1) is being rolled out in Europe, I hope that imporves the speed of the infotainments system, and that should allow for OTA updates starting this summer
@@tomj4371 Hi Tom, is it ok if I answer in metric? First of all I have a 11kW wallbox at home which makes that charging is effortless in most instances. My practical range is some 250-300km, that is mostly highway at speeds of 110-120km/h and by practical range I mean charge till 80pct and charge when at 100pct. When leaving home fully charged, at 100% then depending of ambient temperature I reach 350-400 km when getting nervous at around 10% State of Charge. In general sanitary pauses are needed more often then charging. But as said I mostly charge at home and can return with sufficient charge. I am happy with my EV.
I have the Mach E First Edition with a glass panoramic roof. While it is still spring weather in Los Angeles, we did have a 90-degree weather recently, thankfully the Infrared coating on the panoramic roof was great! I noticed no heat affecting me from the roof and was similar to my other car which is a sunroof with shade. We have not had 110 degree weather yet so I cannot comment how it handles rejecting that level of heat.
Right!? Not for me, but my wife has me close the sunroof in our current car every time she gets in. I love the Frunk in the Mach E, but the ID4 wins overall. Either way...the new electric cars make for very exciting times in automobiles!
This is the only review that’s made me actually like the ID4. I don’t really care about the frunk but am planning on getting my first EV next year. I always shied away from the ID4 but after this I may have to give it a look.
I was heading towards the Ioniq 5 and then I noticed that the ground clearance was pathetic, worse on a car with such a long wheelbase. In fact most ESUVs have poor ground clearance. I'm now seriously considering the AWD ID4, which in the UK is being marketed as the GT.
When you called the Mach E a fatter Mustang you really meant PHATTER right? PH FAT? ;). Alex, you are incredibly detailed. And objective. I watch every one of your videos because you don't gloss over the faults of every vehicle. Thank You! I'm leaning toward the AWD version of the ID4 as it will have a lot more kick ass to it. The alternative is the IONIQ 5 AWD. The Mustang would be in the running but in Canada they didn't mark a base model starting at 45k which means none of the trims get the 5k dollar gov't rebate. Ford Canada, anybody home???

I have test driven a VW ID4 and the Tesla Model Y. I haven't had a chance to test drive a Mach E yet. I will say this, the ID4's ride felt much more like a car/crossover. The Model Y's ride was extremely bumpy. The sales guy told me they have heard that complaint and there should be an update this year to address that. The interior of an ID4 is more like that of a regular car than Tesla's since it has an instrument cluster as well. I didn't like the interior if the Model Y. The minimalist approach was just weird feeling to me. If I get one of these, the ID4 is leading the race right now but I want to check out the Mach E. With that being said, it almost seems like Ford got a Model Y and reverse engineered it and said "let's see if we can make the same thing for less and put a Mustang badge on it" which kind of turns me off.
Th ID 4 is a great deal. It beats the Mach E when it comes to ride quality and cabin noise. Also if you are in the US you will get 3 year free charging on EA chargers.
I always appreciate your in-depth reviews Alex and had vested-interest been awaiting this one. I do agree with your assessment that if you want to stand out in the crowd get the Mustang Mach-E. I took delivery of an ID.4 First Edition just yesterday (17 March 21) and I'm really enjoying it. But no one is turning their heads. At a casual glance they likely think it's just another VW Tiguan and don't bother to look more closely. I actually want some anonymity this time around so I'm good with it, but again I do concede your point.
Things are really starting to heat up in the mainstream EV space. Once the Koreans and Japanese manufacturers join the fray, there will be plenty of options for people to choose, and hopefully dealers will get serious about understanding them and caring about them.
If you like the Lancia Delta, Hyundai Pony, and the original VW Golf/Rabbit; you will like the Ioniq 5. The designer who designed the Pony also designed the other 2 vehicles i mentioned. What i find fascinating about the Ioniq 5 is, it is more VW than the VW I.D. 4.
Yes, the much faster Mach-e with only skinny tires is a concern. As what good is speed without handling to go with it. The lack of a roof sunshade is a concern as well. But if exterior looks is a main concern, the Mach-e looks so much better than the VW.
We just bought a Mustang Mach e premium this past weekend. We're loving it so far. When I was young and single I owned a Trans-Am and then a Camaro Z28. This is much faster than either of those. It's even faster than my F-150 that has a 395 horsepower v8 in it. I was on a two-lane Highway passing a slower vehicle and I went from 60 to 105 before I realized it and got back into my own lane. You have no idea how fast you're going because it's so quiet and the acceleration actually puts you back into the seat. The GT when it comes out will be mind-blowing. Saving money wasn't the primary reason for me to buy this car but I live 25 miles from the nearest town so only costing $0.90 in electricity each way is a real bonus.
Kudos to both manufacturers for bringing competitive EVs to the marketplace. Mach E is my choice, but I could see someone taking the VW. Enjoying the hell out my 2017 Ford Focus Electric. Next one one will probably be a Mach E GT.

I think I would be happy with either one. (I currently drive a 15 year old Odyssey, so pretty much ANYTHING else would make me happy). I'm currently leaning toward the ID.4, though. I'd really like to be able to put a hitch receiver on my car and the Mach-e isn't rated for towing. I'm not looking to tow an RV, but I would like to be able to put a bike rack on it or get a 4x8 trailer for runs to the home center. To me, the biggest drawback to the ID.4 is that they didn't design it with a frunk. That just seems like they didn't fully embrace the current EV design possibilities. I also really like that VW included 3 years of free charging with ElectrifyAmerica. They just put a charging station in around the corner from my house.
The ID.4 has been tested, validated and survived the European market. They have been successful with the ID.3 version too. I suspect the issues with electrify America are more to do with them being built and shipped from Europe which operate a different electrical grid. I wouldn't be writing off VW anytime soon!

I think the difference is that the Ford Mach-E is made for the American market, it is not very common to have a tow hitch on normal cars in USA but the VW is made for the European market and it is very common with a tow hitch in Europe.
Alex's comment about the Mach E's glass roof being a solar oven was spot on. As a previous owner of a Subaru Outback wagon with a sunroof and living in FL, we kept is closed all of the time for that very reason. This would be a deal breaker for me concerning the Mach E.
Love your work! I visited a Ford dealer who had a demo of MachE premium. They only allow you to ride as passenger. The sales rep demonstrated the route planner with a trip to Disney, normally a 12 hit drive. The Mache planner gave a 43 hour drive with charging. Not sure if the east I95 corridor doesn’t have fast charge, but that presentation really dampened my enthusiasm. .
I tested a Mach-e Premium last weekend from my local Ford dealer. I called the salesman ahead to schedule it. He was working from home. My son and I arrived, I talked to the receptionist, she handed me the keys and pointed to the car. Did not even check my DL,credit, or send a salesman with me. They did not limit my time. We took it for an hour. It probably helped that I bought my Ford Edge from them 5 years ago (my first Ford). We have an excellent local Ford dealer (Anderson Ford). The nearest Tesla dealer is an hour away. My son owns a brand new Tesla Y performance edition which we arrived in and parked in front of the showroom. so i test drove both cars the same day. I am conflicted. I have a reservation in for a GT right now. I like many things better on the Tesla. Build quality on my son's Tesla is excellent but he waited for that to improve and took delivery on Dec 31st 2020. I'll probably go with the Mach-e GT at this point. But when Tesla gets the tax credit back, I might reconsider. Sorry for not being specific with details but I would have to write a full review to cover all the different things i like best on each car and don't have time while reading this at work.
I drove the Mach E in California Route 1 guise. I echo what you say about the tires. I took a corner quickly to see how flat is stays, but could not even focus on that, because the tires were squealing so badly. The acceleration, while quick, does not feel quick. I expected more of a throw back in the seat from what is supposed to be instant torque delivery. Maybe the AWD will be better. Premium has the best looking wheels. GT has the ugliest wheels. I think my choice would be the Select model with AWD. That way, I can avoid the needless glass roof and spend the savings on some aftermarket wheels and tires. It will be worth having to recharge sooner to have decent handling. I'm not a fan of perforated seats, either, so win-win. The seats were pretty comfy for me, but I have not tried the VW.
Always appreciate the detailed reviews. My main problem with this and other other reviews is that I don't drive around with five roller bags, ever. What I do drive around with is my massage table (I'm a therapist). I also transport things like big screen TVs. In other words, large bulky items, not a series of bags I can adjust and rearrange. I haven't found any reviews by anyone that use some real-world examples of putting items in the cargo space.
Great review. I drive hwy 17 in the Santa Cruz mountains and my premium Mach-e handles great! I love the way it drives. It handles almost as well as my 2012 Mazda Miata. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the different drive settings on the Mach-e . I stick with “engage”
Did he use user submitted captions before? I know google killed that and this weekend I’ve only been able to get auto-captions on most channels. It’s a mess :/

Once gain, a terrific review, Alex. I've owned several Ford products over the last 50 years along with vehicles from GM, Toyota, Audi and, most recently, a 2020 Hyundai Palisade. I'm ready to go electric and take a chance on the Mach E (quite different than the 66 Mustang I once owned ax a kid!) After researching the Mach E through numerous sources and test diving the Mach E, I decided to order a Premium, extended range AWD. I was impressed to say the least. Im not a big time "car guy", but have been in love with the auto industry and have done a bit of my own wrenching for as long as I can remember. I think Ford has a real winner on their hands. A nice mix of decent practicality and a bit of panache. I'll be lucky to take delivery by the Fall but I'm really excited (as excited as an old guy can be) about this vehicle.
No extra battery dont need it just drive the old school....and te repair on the old school is peanuts .new school repair . Look.out to much crap on new school to gimicky
Thank you for the comparison! Great job, one thing for me however, is I did not have any trouble with feeling too hot in the Mach-e with the panoramic roof, it has auto-darkening on the premium.
If you are not a mustang fan, there is no good reason to have long front/nose in an ev... To be honest the frunk is a gimmick if you have a decent size boot. You can utilize the space for the cabin of the car and boot. The rest of the issues you mentioned about the id4.. is related to the software in the press cars and it will be changed and improved. The mustang mach E is a great car .. both cars going to be very popular... Thank you for your videos ..

@@BUNKERPT I rarely put the effort in to slamming idiots, but you hit me on a bad day. First, get over your caps lock ego and try actually listening to the review and not what you think you know. Like the fact that this is the North American -- specifically US release. 1. None of the US based reviewers have been able to get the ID4 onboard route planner to filter for charging rates. None. 2. VW's Travel Assist (Semi-Automated Driving Assistance) is not autonomous driving. Its Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control, Ford does that, everyone offers that these days. The Ford System that he clearly said isn't available yet, is like GM's SuperCruise which allows hands off driving on mapped roads. He clearly pointed that out and you chose to ignore it. Directly from VW's US Press Kit, "Travel Assist enables Level 2 partially-automated hands-on driving from 0 to 95 mph." 3. The VW ID4 as currently available in the US does NOT have auto brake hold. VW says it will come later. They said it will be in a software update. Again, this is a US based reviewer, doing a review with a North America/US model. Several reviewers have actually taken video of the grayed-out/unavailable auto-brake hold button on the screen. 4. The VW ID4 sold in the United States does NOT have a heat pump. VW installed resistive heating to get the price down. Canadian models have a heat pump, and maybe VW will offer it as an option in the US for colder climates, but the US models do NOT have a heat pump. 5. Of course the ID4 comes with an EVSE, it comes with a US-standard 110 volt EVSE while the Ford comes with one that can do either 110 volt or 220 volt. That is what he mentioned at the end, if you wanted to have an EVSE in the car that supported 220 volt, you'd need to buy one. Your statement really made it obvious that you aren't in the US. 6. The VW ID4 supports over-the-air updates; but a lot of the press cars don't have the most current software installed which supports it. Apparently the US software release 2.1, build 0792 is required to support over-the-air updates; however none have been pushed out. Reviewers can only state what they know, based on the vehicles they've been supplied by the manufacturer. Calling Alex on Autos biased has got to be the funniest, most inane, thing I've ever heard. Alex and his team do a thousand times the research before making these videos that anybody out there except perhaps Engineering Explained- who focuses, almost to the detriment of the rest of the review, on the mechanics of the vehicle. Alex has now purchased 3 vehicles for long term review, the first was a base Tesla Model 3, then a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, and now the Mustang Mach-E. He'll compare the Mach-E to just about every 'similar' vehicle out there while he owns it because it is on hand. But to say he's biased towards it? Certainly not. The ID4, as it was delivered in the US, is not quite there. Maybe people the US expect more from their new cars?
Have a Mach E AWD Ext Range Premium in Rapid Red on order for the hubs. Looks like maybe August delivery. He asked about an ID4 for me because I like the more square back and higher clearance, so this comparison was very helpful. Thank you.
I test drive the ID4 today. Nope. I was not impressed at all. For the money, I’d go with a entry level Mach E over the VW hands down. The Ford is a much better car. Much.
@@goochigoochs3836 Ford Escape sold 11,000 in Feb, 17,000 in Mar, and 15,000 in April. Which was like 10x more than the Mach e. The Toyota Rav4 sold 35,000, 47,000 and 40,000 those same months These are just the few I looked up. Even the Chevy Blazer that a lot of people don't like sold more than the Mach E. Tesla Model Y selling 33,000 just in March alone tripled the total sales of the Mach e
I would take the ID4 simply because i want the power seats. Would never buy another vehicle without them. Next years models should have most of the bugs worked out. Comfort is everything when you get older. I can’t stand that fixed glass roof with no shade. A deal breaker for me.
Thanks for the great comparison video. I was leaning toward the Mach-E for my next EV, but the ID.4 sounds better the more I learn about. Seems like they both need some software upgrades to iron out the kinks. My current bottom line is “how soon will the Ioniq 5 be out?”

The Mach-E will sell more because there are more Ford dealers. My VW dealer is 60+ miles away, my Ford dealer is 13 miles away and right next to my Walmart.
So maybe the ID4 is more for Subaru and Rav 4 buyers because = more ground clearance, tow certified. People driving those cars don’t care about the looks and more about the outdoors and practicality. Mach E is more for car people who cares about looks and acceleration. So maybe the man gets the Mach E and the wife gets the ID4 😁 And the tech nerd gets the model Y
In Canada, ID.4 base pricing is much more aggressive at 45k$Cdn towards the Mach-E at 52. Additionally even the Id.4 upped trim at 53, it still qualifies for both federal 5k$ and Quebec's 8k$ EV rebates for a total 12k$. Mach-E does not qualify for the fed and there is no way to get the big battery AND the Qc rebate. Pricing wise, ID.4 becomes a real deal here! Mine on order, amongst the first Cdn deliveries due later this summer. BTW for now available only in British Columbia and Québec. Rest of Canada will have to wait longer.
Great video comparison. I still don't understand why Ford used the Mustang moniker instead of Edge, or Explorer, or just Mach -E. I do know why they didn't name it the Escape -E. And what's up with "Mach"? There is nothing on the car that is the speed of sound, except the electrons that run the car, and they go at the speed of light.
It's hard to get either one at the moment. I was told by the Ford dealer that the one they had they were not able to sell for 40 days. So, even though I drove it and had a favorable impression, I did not have the option to buy it. I asked when they'd be getting some stock in and they replied that they way of the world with the Mach-e was that it would be an order only car at the moment. One reason given for this was the microchip shortage. At the moment, there is going to be a wait unless you can snag one on the lot at a fair price vs. having to have a bidding war with other buyers to get the one on the lot. I don't know what the lead time is for the Mach-e if you order one? No VW around here even has an ID.4. So, I can't even try out to compare and see visually.
Where do you live right now? I live in the Tampa/Saint Pete/Clearwater area, and my two closest VW dealers each have an I.D 4, though only Lokey VW in Clearwater has salesstaff just dying to take you for a test drive in it. AutoNation Ford in Saint Pete has a “California Route 1“ model that they are happy to have you test drive, and Walker Ford is allowing you to sign up to take a Mach-e home for a couple days to see how you like living with it!
@@beach1963 I'm in the Omaha, NE area. There are Mach-e's around, but I've not seen any ID.4's yet. I've not checked at the other dealers to see if theirs are for sale or if they got them as service loaners and can't sell them until they get their service loaner miles. It's not hard to test drive one, it's just hard to find one that they can sell you. I don't particularly want a service loaner as I think those will be "tested" out pretty thoroughly. I don't know how long the wait would be if I ordered one would be.

Skoda Enyaq will be same as Volkswagen in driving (same platform), but more space and way better interior and exterior design. Picking the upcoming 4-wheel from that will also be faster than the rearwheel version. Not on par with the Mach E in speed, but 1.5 seconds faster than this ID4 in 0-60, while keeping the benefits of better suspension.
Give comparison. I took the Mach E out twice and the front seat had my leg digging into the center console and the sate was marginally comfortable. The low ground clearance meant it does not clear the peak coming out of my driveway. I fine the ride a little twitchy, but the Sync 4 was awesome and the power on demand of AWD was like a rocket. I have a deposit on the ID.4 AWD Pro S and hopefully will have it by June.
I like the VW, it doesn’t scream I’m driving an EV. Given that electrics are mechanically much simpler what are the odds Volkswagen has managed to produce an EV that is halfway reliable and not drive you crazy on repairs like the typical Touareg?
I think the same, the accent colors on the vw are nice. The problem is there are no real EV features, no front trunk, not as amazing 0-60, not as much of a range, inferior software, have to buy L2 charger. Electrify America stations for free are nice.
I'd not bet my money on it, and in most ways I prefer the ID.4. VW just can't make a reliable car right now, at least not what Americans consider reliable
@@markmiller3279 I dunno, I think VW can make a reliable car, they own porsche who seems to make pretty reliable cars. Though like as another commenter said, it's not cheap.
No Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. Tesla is toast - Ioniq5 and Kia EV6 look great too and have useful features that Tesla don’t have like a solar roof and ability to transfer electricity out of the battery
Pretty good review. One thing to take into consideration: Parts availability. My Mach E got rear ended while I was stopped in traffic on the freeway, and it has been in the shop for over 2 months now, waiting for parts. Since these cars are so new, and logistics chains are so wrecked, the parts just aren't coming in. I LOVE the car, I just wish I could drive it! And if they wind up doing the buy-back program on me, I'll be stuck trying to find another one, and having to pay a crazy mark-up, since I won't have time to wait for an order.
I've owned many a real mustang few years ago people are going to have to realize something very important the very first mustang produced by ford moter company was produced in 1964 And a hafe.yes the very first year and it had a generator the have ben all gas powered .the electrick mustang might be ok.migth not be ok .but people are going to have to have them fir at least three years .to get the bugs out of them and the glitches out.so until.the have got at least 200.000.yhousand on the yhats the real test we will see then👍
FYI, the id4 technically has a grille shutter. It's a roller blind design and can be seen if you pop the hood and look down between the radiators. This still helps with aero.
Good review. Advantage seem to flow to the E-Mustang, but most all of those should and will go away with a software upgrade to the ID.4, many that have already happened. I'm sticking with the ID.4 which I believe is a better built vehicle.

i don't know about the options of the id4 in the US, but auto hold and coasting are in the European model, also a heat pump is available as option in Europe
In the EU versions of the ID.4 you already get Auto hold and Travel Assist ("Auto pilot"). The ID.4 can also apply regen automatically based on the road curves etc in ACC. Finally, the ID.4 also easily reaches the EPA rating according to some tests in Europe.

We got an ID 4. The 3 years of free charging and understated string sold us on it. Volkswagen had an amazing lease deal but these models are hard to find in Arizona and the one dealer that had a base model didn’t participate in that lease deal. 🤦♂️
The gloss black trim around the Mach E's wheel-wells and bumpers looks like it will get scratches and chips easily. You won't have to worry about road grime paint chips on the ID4. No premium sound option from VW though.
Agreed! He really knows his stuff, and he does a great job sharing it with the world!
No mention of the fact the US version has lots of missing features from the European version, including less paint options, no 3D HUD, no heat pump, no Matrix LEDs, no 3D matrix rear lights.
As an aside those pointless ugly orange reflector strips on the wheel arches North American markets insist on.
He’s also easily the most thorough. I wouldn’t buy a car without reviewing his video first.
I especially like the fact that he is EV savvy. So many reviewers trip over aspects of electric cars that are just not a problem for me with my EVs. I need a car reviewer that knows EVs. Alex is good at this.

Honest and reasonable. Tell your friends how lucky they are.

Love your reviews Alex. If I were to choose between these, I would go with VW after a year so they can work out any bugs and provide updates.
I test drove both last week. VW drives a LOT better! Ford felt every bump in the road and felt cheap.
In BC Canada here. Our version comes with a heat pump! Also a heated windshield. ID 4 all the way!
Drive the Mach-e also. Its outstanding! I have one on order now.
I test drove the ID.4 last week (in Europe) and the one I drove had brake hold. You get a heat pump in the ID.4 in the higher trim versions and in the lower trim versions it's optional (about $650 option).
Heat Pump is now standard in Europe, but not even an option in the US, at least for now.
The Mach E is inspired heavily by the Ford Evos concept model that was displayed around 2010. Ford used a lot of styling cues from that concept in recent years, but the Mach E is the closest thing you’ll see.
Love it!
It boggles the mind that we're still dealing with laggy entertainment systems on new cars after all these years. Targeting the electronics for the relatively static software that goes in cars isn't rocket science, and there's really no excuse for not building something that is absolutely responsive 99% of the time.
It's because of the chips they use, most of these manufacturers use really cheap chips thay don't have a lot of power

Mach E for me. Better looking and the infotainment on the id4 is a disaster.

May I ask you how much range you get from a full charge?

I agree. I have no desire for a glass roof. We have a Toyota 4Runner with a sunroof. It hasn't been open for a combined total of one hour in 12 years.
It looks better in person.
I was heading towards the Ioniq 5 and then I noticed that the ground clearance was pathetic, worse on a car with such a long wheelbase. In fact most ESUVs have poor ground clearance. I'm now seriously considering the AWD ID4, which in the UK is being marketed as the GT.
Well done, that was a pretty legit EV car review which is more than I can say for most car reviewers who get their hands on an EV.

@@bigsean628 Not really. Having all the mechanical stuffs in front allows more space in the front cabin. ID 4 outmatches MY and Mach E in that area.
Being invisible is a good thing - not as many speeding tickets!
Only convertible drivers need the “Look at me” thing. I don’t want or need to be gawked at.
Things are really starting to heat up in the mainstream EV space. Once the Koreans and Japanese manufacturers join the fray, there will be plenty of options for people to choose, and hopefully dealers will get serious about understanding them and caring about them.
The new Ioniq 5 is doing some strange things to me....
That why I am waiting 😁😁😁😂
Are any of the Japanese manufacturers ever going to join the fray?

I hope that future Mach-e comes with cloth seats along w/ optional roof sun shade. Tire and rim options would be welcome as well.
Yes, the much faster Mach-e with only skinny tires is a concern. As what good is speed without handling to go with it. The lack of a roof sunshade is a concern as well. But if exterior looks is a main concern, the Mach-e looks so much better than the VW.
The Mach e is my dream EV
Its outstanding! We just ordered one. -Ohio

The Honda will prob outlast them both. Lol.
The ID.4 has been tested, validated and survived the European market. They have been successful with the ID.3 version too. I suspect the issues with electrify America are more to do with them being built and shipped from Europe which operate a different electrical grid. I wouldn't be writing off VW anytime soon!

I’m a Tesla M3 driver but great review of these two EVs Alex. I hope both are successful and speed up EV overall adoption.
I will go with the ID4
Tow rating is "0" because they want you to get the F150
I think the difference is that the Ford Mach-E is made for the American market, it is not very common to have a tow hitch on normal cars in USA but the VW is made for the European market and it is very common with a tow hitch in Europe.
I read someplace that the European version has tow capability. I'm not sure why the US version doesn't, other than they wanted to buy an F-150, LOL
I would cover the roof in the darkest tint available or wrap in an opaque body vinyl.
Alex's comment about the Mach E's glass roof being a solar oven was spot on. As a previous owner of a Subaru Outback wagon with a sunroof and living in FL, we kept is closed all of the time for that very reason. This would be a deal breaker for me concerning the Mach E.
Mach E for me but i think more people will buy the ID4.
Nooooo Ford will sell a ton of these its excellent! I've ordered one.
Then you my friend probably should get the F-150 lightning.
Excellent video as always. Alex, please enable close captioning for your hearing impaired viewers.

Thank you for the comparison! Great job, one thing for me however, is I did not have any trouble with feeling too hot in the Mach-e with the panoramic roof, it has auto-darkening on the premium.
Got the Mach E select trim. So happy with it!
Thank you so much for this match! Can't wait for the 2 new Koreans too!
FYI, according to the VW website, the Canadian ID4 will have a heat pump
If you are not a mustang fan, there is no good reason to have long front/nose in an ev... To be honest the frunk is a gimmick if you have a decent size boot. You can utilize the space for the cabin of the car and boot. The rest of the issues you mentioned about the id4.. is related to the software in the press cars and it will be changed and improved.
The mustang mach E is a great car .. both cars going to be very popular... Thank you for your videos ..
You make a good point. It reminds me of how cell phones still had fake, plastic antennas simply because customers expected it.

Directly from VW's US Press Kit, "Travel Assist enables Level 2 partially-automated hands-on driving from 0 to 95 mph."
The ID 4 steering wheel looks just gorgeous and modern while the mustang steering wheel looks a bit old fashioned but does its job...-my opinion-
I have chosen Mach E.
The hands-free bluecruise is already here and it really works.
Much.
If Ford didn't put the name Mustang in that Mach-E, people wouldn't bother stopping to take pictures. Well done Ford marketing.
Must be why the sales for the Mach e are exponentially declining.. great Ford strategy and marketing

Thanks for the great comparison video. I was leaning toward the Mach-E for my next EV, but the ID.4 sounds better the more I learn about. Seems like they both need some software upgrades to iron out the kinks. My current bottom line is “how soon will the Ioniq 5 be out?”

Excellent comparison Alex 👏🏼👏🏼
So maybe the ID4 is more for Subaru and Rav 4 buyers because = more ground clearance, tow certified.
People driving those cars don’t care about the looks and more about the outdoors and practicality.
Mach E is more for car people who cares about looks and acceleration.
So maybe the man gets the Mach E and the wife gets the ID4 😁
And the tech nerd gets the model Y

Very good info.Can,.t understand why Mustang is more expensive than ID.4.Since there is lot of snow on the roads to the cabin I had to choose ID4.
Even the germans build there vehicles.with.more user friendly stuff I like the german stuff better

And a hafe.yes the very first year and it had a generator the have ben all gas powered .the electrick mustang might be ok.migth not be ok .but people are going to have to have them fir at least three years .to get the bugs out of them and the glitches out.so until.the have got at least 200.000.yhousand on the yhats the real test we will see then👍
FYI, the id4 technically has a grille shutter. It's a roller blind design and can be seen if you pop the hood and look down between the radiators. This still helps with aero.
Thanks for this great comparison.

Neither. I'll wait until VW brings ID.3, thanks. Don't need a monster for urban/suburban daily driving, prefer the agility and efficiency.
In the EU versions of the ID.4 you already get Auto hold and Travel Assist ("Auto pilot"). The ID.4 can also apply regen automatically based on the road curves etc in ACC. Finally, the ID.4 also easily reaches the EPA rating according to some tests in Europe.

@@BUNKERPT dieselgate car never beats an ford
We got an ID 4. The 3 years of free charging and understated string sold us on it. Volkswagen had an amazing lease deal but these models are hard to find in Arizona and the one dealer that had a base model didn’t participate in that lease deal. 🤦♂️
The gloss black trim around the Mach E's wheel-wells and bumpers looks like it will get scratches and chips easily. You won't have to worry about road grime paint chips on the ID4. No premium sound option from VW though.
