    In CA the price is reduced by $9000 ($7500 fed $1500 state) and many states even more. At $32,000 to $36,000 well equipped it is priced very well. Add another 3 years of free charging and the net cost to own is even lower. I have a Tesla model 3 long range awd and it gets about 260-280 miles real world range. The id.4 in slate gray will be our 2nd EV.

      @HR in CA also and own bought a Tesla M3SR+ after trying to get a RAV4 prime. Love the car but do not love the company. With Tesla raising their prices and locking you in on maintenance, I decided to buy another brand of EV for our next car. The price is for the Pro about $42,000+ and Pro S for $47,000 before any tax savings. Just placed reservation but delivery will be in 6-12 months :-(. I was happy just to be able to reserve a car unlike the japanese card makers. We am definitely a former toyota car family. Oh, our standard range gets 180 miles on a 80% charge.

Sorry I love you TOM and the way you do your job, but it is a job is it not ? Let us face reality. Journalism is not done in the way it used be years past. The entire press is loaded with "Fake News" and so are all TV channels news network especially CNN. No one that likes to get objective reporting will never watch. But the NYT is no different so committed to a single leftist party and it has written articles and still does so saturated with leftist rhetoric, that has discouraged most readers, especially those that like to get the strait facts, which believe it or not are the vast majority of us. I mean there are not many dumb people around, please do not offend our intelligence, it does not work, nor now or ever, get us the facts. as truly crude as they are, and give us the privilege to form our opinion, as the vast majority of us hates to read an article colored with different shades of truth.

Here is why; Electric, drives like a dream, not like a maniac (so, if my teenage sons were driving it, I wouldn't need to worry about losing a child or a car, or both), free HS charging for 3 years (wort $12,000 to me, I drive a lot-- like 40k miles a year), zero maint cost first two years, battery insured first six years, $7.5k tax credit, soon likely to be make $10k. Yea, you better enjoy it, but only very slowly, now better watch those big trucks, most drive faster than you ,and believe me it is not very comfortable having one behind looming a few inches away from your rear bumper. Good review, as an owner there are few things I’d like to add. First mine is the Chinese version 1st edition. So it might be different than the US. the AR HUD is a must have which include in my package, it’s just awesome, NO need to look at the dash for speed, ACC with displays to the car in front. Lane assist displays and the turn signals when you navigate with infotainment system (except it doesn’t work with CarPlay or androids), the ID Light under windshield is also nice. It will lid up red light warning ( too close to front, auto brake), blue turn signals ( when Navi), green ( phone access) and white( voice controls on). Well the infotainment system is laggy, when CarPlay is connected it’s even worse, hope there will be OTA, the windshield wiper nozzle/pump response very slow, the fluid takes 2-3 seconds. The reverse auto tilt side mirror doesn’t seems to work/ bug. The lane assist need to be manually turn off every damn time when restart the car, ok it might be a safety feature cos the steering wheel won’t pull you back if you did use turn signal switch before changing lane. But I find it annoying where there were no cars around me.

    Nice overview. Until actual ownership, one will not be able to fully experience the subtle design elements of the ID.4 1st Ed. I received my car a week ago and am still finding new things that pleasantly surprise me. This is my first VW and the fourth EV (Leaf, ELR, 2 i3's). Overall the ID.4 is a fantastic urban vehicle - better than average handling (rear drive), comfortable, excellent visibility, and surefooted (20" staggered wheels/tires). I consistently get more than 280 miles per full charge. There's an odd thing about the battery range often showing over 380 miles after a full charge. VW dealer responded that it's normal?! I disagree... VW's software engineers need to do a better job. An exaggerated range will harm a driver's confidence on the actual performance. BMW's i3 does a great job on managing range. The ID.4 however has lots of positive points. The only negative comments I have are the cheap plastic surfaces - dash and trim and the lack of homelink. For a $45K car, VW should offer better materials than inexpensive plastics which really take away the premium sensations you get from the lighting designs - ID.Lights, as they shine on plastic surfaces! Setting that aside, If you want homelink, you'll have to buy another $280 rearview mirror to be installed by a dealer at $135. It may be fine in the EU, but most premium car owners in the U.S. have garages and community gates to deal with. If you can overlook these 2 negative elements, it's an exceptionally good EV at $45K ($38K after Fed incentives). IMHO: a best-in-class value overall.

But that's not hard seeing that we've been seeing the same looking car from Tesla since the S dropped in 2012. The X is a fatter S, the 3 is a smaller S and the Y is a bloated 3.

    Great car! I'm a very happy Tesla M3 owner, but am excited every time the traditional car companies make progress on EV's, contrary to the idea we Telsa owners throw shade on any other option. I've seen an ID4 out and about- IMO it's the best looking VW on the market in the US these days. I absolutely love it. Two concerns: 1) I just wish the real-world range was 300+- i really do use the range in mine frequently, and 2- I've read elsewhere the tech is just not very good- I rely on my Tesla's intellgence to route me to Superchargers on longer trips, and I've read the VW software is not only not up to Tesla standards, but is actually bad, inaccurate and not intelligent. VW themselves have said the software engineering needs for the car exceeded their expectations and know they need to get better. I hope over the air updates help. Great review, Tom. Thank you..

      Tesla has had 10 years to get the software to where it is today. Since all modules in the car can be updated OTA (not just the infotainment screen), I'm guessing in a couple of years things will be vastly improved. At the same time, as one reviewer likes to point out, never buy a car based on the promise of future upgrades -- don't buy the car if you can't live with it currently.
      For me, the fact that it has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (which Tesla lacks) makes up for the weakness of the navigation, since you can just use Google or Apple Maps.

    • @chrisengletx
      @chrisengletx 3 года назад +1

      @@davidnielson9139 Id' love nothing more than better/more intuitive engagement in the VW - but VW themselves have said, when benchmarking themselves against Tesla, That Tesla came from a software-first development path for the S/X/3, whereas VW themselves say they're great at building /engineering cars not software. Hopefully that will change.

      The next update is coming out in summer so you can see then. I've followed some ID.3 channels and the software is ahead of what I've ever had before so I should think that will be true for a lot of people. As for range - well you're an early adopter and perhaps you took on the extra cost of an EV because your mileage allows you to save a lot more. I, for example, would take many years to pay for that extra cost - so for me a long range EV would be a poor investment.

The Supercharger infrastructure is better and the built in trip planner is also better. I've seen many videos, particularly of the Mach E where the built in route planner takes you to a level 2 charger for a 7 hour stop, on a road trip. Really? Yikes. There are two things to add about the 125 kW charging speed. First, the charging "curve" is very fast -- as was stated, from 5% to 80% in 38 minutes (verified by reviewers), and about 50 min to 100%. Compare this to a Mustang Mach E, which is around an hour to 80% and a couple of hours to 100% (slows down to under 20 kW from 80 to 100%.
    Second, from what VW America seems to have stated, the 125kW charging is limited by software to protect the battery, the charger in the car is capable of doing 150 kW; they have said they are looking at unlocking the full 150kW speeds. Also, VW corporate has stated that they are looking at putting a 170kW charger in future ID.4s.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  3 года назад +2

      All that is true. But the company does 150kW in e-tron with a similar curve that's faster. And throttling after 80% is pretty standard. I could go deep in the weeds with charging but it's better for a written article, I don't have visuals to support it. I try to touch on the more important stuff. I can only judge what VW is doing now, not what ifs.

But this time are not lying, for in reality if you are very gentle on the throttle and you keep a constant speed well below 100 KMH in optimal weather conditions and without wind you could just top the 400 KM range. Backing into a parking spot is the safest way. So in my opinion the right flank is a safety feature. It is why you will note that many commercial companies require their drivers to back in.
    So if you have trouble backing in maybe you should be taking a safety course to learn how to drive.

      Part of my point was that the charge port is not on the driver's side, some manufactures change the port to the driver's side depending on the market. It's a convenience. There are lots of safe ways to get into a parking spot, just depends on the situation. A few months ago I watched someone in the Safeway lot get rear ended when another driver didn't understand they were backing into a spot.

    What is it’s range with the heater on and outside temperatures of 15 degrees Fahrenheit?

    I bought a First Edition one in England, very good but a things like electric seat were missing and definitely the regeneration breaking could and should be a lot more severe, way too weak. Also the head up display was not available even as a option, but not a bad effort , unfortunately for VW the Berlin Tesla Y will start to be built in a few mths which will without a doubt it will kill this car.

    A nice start...VW materials don't hold up well in the Australian sun, also reliability issues?

    It comes standard with RWD, so I assume the motor is in the rear (I've never heard of an EV with a driveshaft). So, why is there no frunk?

      VW states it is to give more interior space, which it appears to do well. If you notice, the front end is much shorter than the Model Y or Mach E -- though VW likely should have tried to at least add a small frunk that would hold the charging cable. On the positive side, it is very easy to replace the air filter.

      It's interior packaging and it allows VW to more easily add a front motor.

    I loved my drive with the ID.4, the only disappointing thing with it was the lackluster sound system for me. The lack of a good sound system is the only reason why I haven't ordered one. VW has an excellent Fender system in the Golf and its unfortunate they couldn't get something like that in the ID.4! They use Harman/Kardon in the european cars as well, which would've been a welcome addition for the US spec cars. Also the 3 years of EA charging is a VERY good deal!
    The ID.4 was quieter than every Model 3 I've driven, and was smoother on rough pavement. I didn't find any build quality issues with the ID.4 I drove as well.

    Great review, as always! Also, really appreciated the bonus vaccine reminder at the end. As for Id.4, do you think it should be in my EV search that is more in the Mach E and Model Y realm?
    BTW, did you happen to grab a slice of cake at Deep Sea Sugar while you were down in Georgetown? If not, check it out next time... Definite green light!

      It’s wise to check all choices when buying anything over $1,000, right? If nothing else, there’s the knowledge of knowing you spent money well.

    Nice review. I believe this is the first EV from a major car company that can directly compete with Tesla in a few areas…. In Canada the base model is 10,000 Canadian cheaper than the base model Y, with the same range. And about the same price as the base model 3, but a full SUV, and again similar range…. And it’s attractive. Simply on specs vs price it competes with Tesla. But obviously not on performance and speed.

    Just look at 2 Id.4 locally, not bad but I think I’ll hold out for the Airya.
    I love one pedal driving with my Leaf e+ and I believe VW has it also. The 250 and 275 models just not enough for me. The Airya should have 300 miles. I don’t believe the Id.4 has a heat pump whereas the leaf and up coming Airya does. All, repeat all ev’s need a heat pump for obviously cool weather

    A few "clever" managers at VW made the decisions to fudge the EPA numbers. They got caught and paid the price. Don't judge the entire company over those a-holes. This car should sell well.

    So glad that we got more selection coming up. We are behind China and Europe for a long time in consumer choice and had made Tsla the only choice for a long time.

    i like the styling a lot. from the outside i think, it is on point and even comes with a certain friendliness. however, the none integrated touch display and the touch crap makes me hate it so much. regarding the integration, audi did a much better job in the Q4 but of course you have to pay a premium for the nice interior in the Q4. but still, audi also sadly had to follow that touch crap.
    i personally am interested more in the ID3 facelift version that might come out 2022/2023. also the 160km/h limit is a show stopper for me. it should go at least 180km/h.
    all in all, i think VW did a good job and now they should focus more on refinement, the competition does not sleep either.
