@@SydneyRoo That's really interesting. Seems like a massive oversight, considering many Americans live in areas with cold temperatures. Do you know why Tom says that the ID4 maintains the battery temperature in this video? Was that just a mistake, or is that review car Canadian spec?

Great review! Thank you. I’m not an EV fan, but Audi’s version of this car, the Q4 e-tron, looks perfect for me. I assume it will handle the same. I live on the Canadian prairies, and an EV may be best for cold winters - that instant heat, no freezing cold, thick oil on start up. Great review as always, Tom. I must admit enjoying watching your struggles in the snow when you returned from Hawaii. You appear to have been hit harder in Seattle than we experienced in the South Sound but it was a challenge all over the Puget Sound area last week. As far as the ID.4 is concerned, VW is obviously aiming at more mainstream consumer for their EVs than some other automakers. The appeal of longer range EVs (250+ miles) is still limited to relatively affluent consumers and those with the ability to charge their vehicles at home. (Sorry, apartment dwellers and non-home owners.) But with the proliferation of public charging stations and a driving experience not too different from a familiar ICE or hybrid car coupled with a purchase price that doesn't exact a burden equivalent to a luxury vehicle VW is hoping to carve a niche for their relatively roomy compact CUV. As long as the federal tax credit holds for VW, it seems like a good bet.

Thanks for the great review Tom - very interested in the snow driving capability. I have a comment regarding ground clearance. I have read different figures in different places for ID.4. I have an AWD with 20" wheels that is built and in transit, but don't have it yet, so I went to a dealer in California and borrowed a tape measure and measured a Pro S, RWD, and it was 8". Not sure if the wheels were 19" or 20", with the larger tire possibly adding .5" to the ground clearance. AWD is supposed to add another half inch over the RWD model. So I think 6.8" as mentioned in the video is not correct. I also queried the community in the Forum on Insideev's, and got this reply about an RWD: I just picked up my ID.4 Pro yesterday. 19 inch wheels. Just measured - looks like 8.25 inches to me. There is a small plastic bump out in front of the tires which brings that down to 7 at each tire. Personally, I am happy with that. I ran a VW bug, then Rabbit, then Golf, all over creation with less.
I'll go with VWoA's official specs which is the same for both wheel sizes. Only AWD made a difference. Quite possibly, it's factoring something unseen like a chassis dip or suspension component. Enjoy the car!
Tire size doesn’t affect ground clearance since the sidewall gets smaller on the larger wheel size. 😉 of course you can get oversized aftermarket tires but from the factory, the total diameter is pretty much the same regardless of wheel size.
My Audi A6 has rear cross traffic alert. It will stop the car as you are backing up if someone you didn't see comes along. I have had it engage and it is unnerving! It doesn't just apply the brakes, it does a FULL STOP. Of course you aren't going that fast but it still scares the crap out of you. Audi Pre-Sense will engage if it thinks a collision (going forward) is likely, but it gives you a second to get your foot on the brake to avert. I haven't had the brakes engage but it would no doubt be a freak out experience.
Tom your videos are great. This AWD ID4 looks like a winner but hopefully they quickly keep updating their software over the air. Apparently there's a 3.0 version out there that speeds up the interface and gives 135kW charging.
I know it's not easy to make everything fit in a thumbnail, but watch out for the duration that RUclips adds in the lower right corner. It can sometimes overlap with text embedded on the thumbnail, like in this video. Keep up the good work Tom!
Honestly I like the way the id.4 looks, I would never get a car in Nardo Grey because it's just too flat. But that car lowered, or with bigger wheels could make a really nice city daily.
Probably because mechanically it doesn't function the same way. They're for motion all wheel drive system is mechanical has differentials that can move power around. With an electric drive train you've got a motor in the back and a motor in the front and the only thing controlling where power goes is application of brake power. So if the right rear wheel starts to slip it applies the brake which will send the power to the other side. I believe the four motion system is more robust mechanically, and more reactive. A lot of times these brake controlled all-wheel drive systems are limited and how much torque they can shift from one side to the other. Also how quickly they react.
Great review as always. This looks good, if a little bit plump. But VW and Audi really need to STOP trying to reinvent the physical volume knob and HVAC controls. Those cannot be improved upon.
I got mixed messages on the internet when it comes to heat pump within ID4. Does the car comes with heat pump to tackle colder weather (lost of battery-life from cold) in Minnesota?
Thank you for your vido My id4 2022 china made showing service inspection need after1444km milage what iwilldo to solve the problem and no trained EV inginer inour country so how w'd you assist me ..........Thanks again!

Info: I believe that the ID.4 only keeps the pack at 32F with ID software v3.1. In earlier s/w versions (v2.4 for example), it would warm battery to 45F, but a lot of complaints about very poor efficiency in cold weather (
We have one on order. No one ever told me before that each free Electrify America "session" is limited to just 30 minutes. Not even sure what that means? I don't like the sound of it. The free 3 years was one of the big selling points for us. So If we're on a road trip and need to fill from 5% to 100% it just turns off or starts to charge money? Does this mean we can't walk away and do some shopping or go to a restaurant in the meantime? If we decide to stick around can I unplug after 30 minutes and just restart the 30 minute process all over again for free? This all sounds like a really bad idea. Not happy with VW right now.
Personally, I wouldn't sweat it. At 150kWh stations, your car should be well charged after 30 minutes, more than likely around 80%. After that, charging speed drops dramatically to protect the battery, similar to all EVs. 30 minute sessions keep people from camping out for a long time, that keeps others from charging. Also, while traveling, it's more efficient time wise to "work the bottom of the battery". In other words, charge to 80% (the point where it starts throttling down dramatically), then drive to the next station with a low battery and repeat. You'll actually save time that way. Don't know if unplugging and starting a new session will get you another 30 minute immediately though. I was able to get my grocery shopping done in under 30 minutes without trying FYI.
The green lights reflecting off of the car at 19:24 is a really cool looking shot. I just reserved an ID4 AWD and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s not going to beat a sports car in the 1/4 mile, but it’s quick enough that it’s not boring, and it’ll beat any minivan to the next stop light. I’m annoyed that the Canadian spec car gets a heat pump and we don’t though. When the Q4 e-tron makes it to dealer lots I’m going to test drive one, it’s not that much more expensive really, but I think ID4’s less luxurious interior may be a better fit for my two young children and the messes they still make.
One thing in the specs about the heat pump is that it saves energy between freezing and 15C/65F or so. And given the issues Teslas are having with theirs, I don’t think I would want one in the Mid West. The most important thing with an EV in winter is to keep it charged up. The battery draws energy to stay at a minimum ambient temperature when not running, and has to heat up to allow big draws, so efficiency takes a hit and preconditioning the car and battery makes a difference. Naysayers love to point at this an an EVs weakness, forgetting that you can charge at home if you have a plug, and it costs less than $10.
@@davidcottrell570 You may be right, but I really like the heat pump in my Leaf out here in the Pacific Northwest. That said, with large battery in the ID4 I’m not too worried about it. Like you say, I can precondition the car and battery before I leave.
I thought hard about the ID4 AWD because it's such awesome value for money and the practicality is off the charts. There are some things about the car, like the weird capacitive buttons, which would be mildly infuriating over time. Overall, it's a great family EV SUV but one that lacks any sort of passion.
I live in the Seattle area and wanted to get the rear wheel drive 24 id4 but the sales guy said they only sell the awd on the westcoast. I don't need awd so I passed on it plus the awd gets less range

Greetings from Eastern Canada where winter tires are essential for winter driving. Did you have winter tires installed or did you use the factory all season tires?
Curious...how does the battery pack temp logic work? Is it only keep the battery pack at 77 when you are using the car or is it on when it is parked as well?
"Nine packs of Costco TP." Nice. Is that the North American version of the Banana Box Test? Great to see a review in the snow. Answered all my questions including 'would I get the Moonstone Grey?'
@@DrivenCarReviews I know. I was trying to tease the fact you were a bit crooked in the spot. Thanks for great vids. It’s nice to see familiar scenery around SEA. The Hawks ambient light colors was a nice touch.
Really looking forward to the EV6 testing, great design and interior, with 800 volt architecture......if the EV6 did not exist, ID4 would be a reasonable choice.
Looks nice but like any car, wait a few years so they work out the bugs like charging speed, lack of buttons, etc. then when the 2nd generation comes out, you can buy the 1st generation knowing all its faults and if you can live with them. As for cold, where I live we often hit -45C or colder. My Leaf with all WEATHER tires is great for traction.
Even with four-wheel drive, please don't forget that in icy/snowy/cold conditions, dedicated winter tires are the best option

Great review. Love your presentations, camera angles and video and audio. Very detail. Keep up the excellent work
Tom your videos are great. This AWD ID4 looks like a winner but hopefully they quickly keep updating their software over the air. Apparently there's a 3.0 version out there that speeds up the interface and gives 135kW charging.
Yes, that was in a graphic since I had already shot the charging speed part.
Nice review. Thanks for making this video. This is the first I heard that there would not be a spare tire!
Thank you. Excellent review.
Excellent review, snow traction was covered particularly well. It looks very English where you live 😁
I know it's not easy to make everything fit in a thumbnail, but watch out for the duration that RUclips adds in the lower right corner. It can sometimes overlap with text embedded on the thumbnail, like in this video. Keep up the good work Tom!
It adds a little mystery to the thumbnail. I try to avoid that corner but...
Another great video Tom, thanks!
Great video. I live in the PNW as well. Just updated my reservation to AWD, but didn't spring for the glass roof.
Honestly I like the way the id.4 looks, I would never get a car in Nardo Grey because it's just too flat. But that car lowered, or with bigger wheels could make a really nice city daily.
I also think for a CUV it looks great. The Skoda Enyak looks even better though.
I am sure Aunt Betty won’t mind! You deserve 1,000,000 subscribers at least.
If I can just get Aunt Betty to subscribe...
Really enjoyed this review! I wonder why VW isn’t using the 4 Motion AWD branding on this model like they do on the others..simply AWD
@@kens97sto171 Awesome explanation. Thank you!
Great review. This car really has grown on me. I’ve seen a few in the wild in the Seattle area and they look nice in-person.
Kind of surprised that there are already two in my neighborhood and that a friend has an AWD reserved. More popular than I would have thought.
@@DrivenCarReviews Don't underestimate the power of the federal EV credit.
Great review as always. This looks good, if a little bit plump.
But VW and Audi really need to STOP trying to reinvent the physical volume knob and HVAC controls. Those cannot be improved upon.
Wow that is a nice neighbourhood
I got mixed messages on the internet when it comes to heat pump within ID4. Does the car comes with heat pump to tackle colder weather (lost of battery-life from cold) in Minnesota?
Thank you for your vido
My id4 2022 china made showing service inspection need after1444km milage what iwilldo to solve the problem and no trained EV inginer inour country so how w'd you assist me
..........Thanks again!
That was just plain Excellent Tom. I’m recommending you to my RAV4 group.
Are you recommending this VW to your RAV4 group?
@@rightlanehog3151 I’m recommending they watch all of Tom’s videos. Starting with this one
@@tommihelich2613 I've done some RAV4 pieces so there's that. Really like the Prime. Wish Toyota would make more of them.
@@DrivenCarReviews yes you have and I’m eternally grateful. Since you gave it a glowing review I knew I could look for it when it came time to buy. Many of the people in the RAV4 Prime group are interested in BEV’S and cars in general so I’m happy to recommend someone I trust.
Another amazing review. Thank you 🙏🏾
Info: I believe that the ID.4 only keeps the pack at 32F with ID software v3.1. In earlier s/w versions (v2.4 for example), it would warm battery to 45F, but a lot of complaints about very poor efficiency in cold weather (
I would have wanted you to do a full stop when going up a hill and trying to continue from there.
Someone needs to tell Volkswagen about physical buttons.
Their current mechanical buttons aren't that nice feeling tho.
Try an Audi etron or Skoda enyaq instead. They’re sister models based on the same platform as I’d.4 and they both come with physical buttons.
Thanks!
Dang, sorry I missed this. Thanks for the contribution man!
Do love the glow of EA stations at dusk.
Loved the review as much as the car!
Great review as always!
Since you are in Seattle you should have driven up the hill in Magnolia , probably one of the steeper hills in the city.
Dravus? It was closed when I checked. Might be THE steepest.
I live in the Seattle area and wanted to get the rear wheel drive 24 id4 but the sales guy said they only sell the awd on the westcoast. I don't need awd so I passed on it plus the awd gets less range
I don't think that's true. Check around.
Great review Tom
Rivian needs to send you their truck!
True
Lol this is the best test as I live here! Haha dope review
Bravo, Tom!
Your video Amped me up to test drive an EV. You've also Pulled me towards AWD with dual motors.
Shnow is nice at those low temps...-10C ish further north.
Nokian Hakkapelitta R3 winter tires on AWD? Amazing.
Your work is top tier, if not the best 👍🏻👏🏻
With snow tires this car would be Spider Man.
Greetings from Eastern Canada where winter tires are essential for winter driving. Did you have winter tires installed or did you use the factory all season tires?
Curious...how does the battery pack temp logic work? Is it only keep the battery pack at 77 when you are using the car or is it on when it is parked as well?
I would have to talk to a VW engineer to get the accurate details. Don't think it's on while parked.
"Nine packs of Costco TP." Nice. Is that the North American version of the Banana Box Test? Great to see a review in the snow. Answered all my questions including 'would I get the Moonstone Grey?'
Not sure what the Banana Box test but yeah, sounds similar. I just think TP is inherently more humorous.
12:30 you’re one of those back-in parkers :). Maybe the back up cameras were a bit dirty from all the snow and you couldn’t see the lines 😜
I backed in because it's the only way the cord reaches.
@@DrivenCarReviews I know. I was trying to tease the fact you were a bit crooked in the spot. Thanks for great vids. It’s nice to see familiar scenery around SEA. The Hawks ambient light colors was a nice touch.
@@NeedSpeedRC Perfectly straight. Look up "keystone effect" in photography. I'm sticking to that story.
Kalamazoo is fun to say as well . . .
One mandatory test for all vehicles we buy is "can it handle our obnoxiously steep driveway in the winter ". This seems like it would do pretty well
with the ecoflow delta pro you can exten range of ev at walmart
Really looking forward to the EV6 testing, great design and interior, with 800 volt architecture......if the EV6 did not exist, ID4 would be a reasonable choice.
Good luck buying an EV6 this calendar year
@@devinself2104 Weirdly a couple available in Tulsa right now, but agree after the launch stock has gone.......
I wouldn't buy a car based on what future updates might bring. EVs are great though, even the less expensive models.
Great video!
But why does it sound like a tiny version of SkyTrain in Vancouver???
Looks nice but like any car, wait a few years so they work out the bugs like charging speed, lack of buttons, etc. then when the 2nd generation comes out, you can buy the 1st generation knowing all its faults and if you can live with them. As for cold, where I live we often hit -45C or colder. My Leaf with all WEATHER tires is great for traction.
Exxon? That’s a funny one there at the end of the video.
