VW ID.4 Compared to Tesla Model Y

  • This is a comparison a lot of people have been asking for; Model Y Long Range vs VW ID.4. Both comparable in size but that's where the similarities end. The ID.4 is a much more tame car, slower acceleration, typical interior and exterior body lines but ride quality and cost beat the Tesla badly. When I made this video the cost was similar but that has changed since.

      @@davidandrews8007 yes, and maybe. First, Tesla do not have real self driving neither. But it's driver assist, or so called full self driving, is probably the most matured based on the mass data it got from it's users. I tested the id4 yesterday, it failed to slow down at 2 red light where cars were stopped at the light, at least not early enough before I feel unsafe and slammed on the brake. Maybe it can handle 90% of the highway driving or following traffic driving, but in situations where Teslas hitting the parked emergency vehicles, I doubt VW could do better. However, the difference is not as big as many thought it would be, at least not $10k extra worth. Software for the center control then yes, VW lacks not only to tesla, but Hyundai also. Hyundai has the best software among all the traditional car makers IMHO

    I like the point how you have made the comparison. "Don't let the others tell you which car is better". Both are fantastic cars for different needs, styles and tastes. If you like to drive a taller car, maybe with kids with a very good driving confort or going weekends outside populated areas, then ID4 will probably be your best choice. If you like a sportier car, fast accelerations, better cornering performance, etc go for your model 3.
    Many things can affect your final deccision, even if you don't like the interior design, it could be a good reason for not buying a car, because you need to be happy driving your car, it's your money and your preferences over what the "experts" might think about your purchase.
    There are a lot of second-hand cars with less than a year, because this kind of occurrences. Ask for a test drive allways!

    We so much in love with our 1st limited edition iD4. Tesla may have been making the EV technology longer but they have been making car a lot less time than any of these car companies and that is why I think Tesla is not a comfort car to drive. We do no care about the performance because we care more about the comfort and safty. And iD4 is a very comfortable EV to drive and sit in.
    Also to say that iD4 is for driving local or grocery shopping is so wrong. We drove iD4 from the Bay Area to LA and it was the best experience we had. Both of our teen sons enjoy sitting in it even in the back seat as it is mush more comfortable than Model 3 or Model Y (we did test drove them and one of the main reason beside not a comfortable/safe drive is the uncomfortable back seat. There are many Electrify America everywhere along the way which makes the experience of driving iD4 long distance awesome. And yes you havd to test drive as many EV as you can in order to compare them. And for us the 1st limited edition iD4 after $7,500 and some other state incentive we paid only $32,000 with 3 years free charging from Eletrify America and 280 range. We can't beat it. By the way, we do not push the button to start the car as you mentioned. We hop in and drive without pressing any button. :)

    I priced a Tesla LR, blue with white interior on 20 inch wheels with a trailer hitch w/o destination charges at $61,900. The ID4 AWD, with the same equipment at $49,675. Throw in the $7500 tax rebate and the difference in price between the two cars is $19,825 which might make a difference in deciding on which one to purchase.

      I really like Teslas (don't have one but have driven a few), am impressed by their innovation and leadership, and would consider buying one (my next car will be an EV). All that being said I don't think the traditional automakers are DOA yet and they know how to make cars. In the end charging will be solved (and most of us will charge most of the time at home). I'm glad that there will be more choices and competition in EVs. I think EV levels the field. Electric motors are simpler than ICE motors so at some point that will even out for everyone and it'll boil down to the car.

      I charge my model Y at home. Never had to wait to charge and never hassle with gas pumps that also would not work with an power outage. My next home (currently designing) will power my home/vehicles, here in AZ, using solar. So for me energy will be free after the solar pays for itself in a few years. I understand that this is not an option for most folks in apartments (Yet) and grid solar and electrical energy storage will only reduce the price of grid electricity.

      $7500 credit helps consider the iD4. Families will appreciate that the iD4 is more comfortable overall and Dad will appreciate a nice watch, golf bags etc. the wife can build a nice shoe and handbag closet or a nice watch while driving the iD4. Tesla will give no more credits, but a great network of charge stations for your $7500, while driving a neck snapping stiffer ride that the family are sure to enjoy over and over again?! That acceleration and harder back seats might get the question asked, "Are we there yet?" Less, but sooner cause the family in the back has a sore bum sooner than the iD4 and dad won't mind cause he gave up the $7500USD Rolex to get a better network. Yup, I'm liking the VW in the long run. My wrist, ears and stress levels will all be in check. You didn't mention the massage seat. You can just put in D and go, no need to push the start button. Tesla Model Y is now starting at $57,000 where ID.4 AWD is at $51,000. Tesla canceled the incentive for free charging at Tesla network. ID.4 gives 3 years of free charging at Electrify America. Both of them are great cars. But they are completely two different styles. Tesla is like a sport car/futuristic car with tons of amenities. ID.4 is geared toward SUV/cross over and for those who wants to make a slow transition from gas to electric. According to VW, the direct competitors for ID.4 are Rav4, CRV, etc.

In Wikipedia is written that Tesla has 1101 (1201 number from ScrapeHero) charging Stations in North America (this includes Canada). Electrify America is only about stations in the USA. But numbers like stations don't really say anything about the number of single chargers. I don't know if you can charge more than one car at an EA charger given it has more than one cable (unlike tesla) but this could effect the number of cars loading at one station. And for the most Tesla models you will only get more than 150kW with an SOC under 35%. And I think all new EA charger will be capable of 350kW. But for most cars 150kW will be enough.

    Great overview! You're unapologetic in your perspective as a Tesla owner, and that's valuable to us viewers that are looking for that perspective.
    Thank you for pointing out the piano black issues. Here's hoping that trend will go away very soon!
    Many people harp on the VW and the Sandy Munro videos, but given how many Tesla-familiar reviewers are glowing about the ID.4, it's hard to dismiss the product altogether. The ID.4 is not intended to be an enthusiast's vehicle for carving up canyon roads, but it seems quite suitable for the mainstream needs of the general public. The fact that it's ~$20k cheaper than a Model Y has to come into play in many people's minds (who are not part of the faithful). I'll have to take another look and a test drive
    Something that stood out is that you dinged the Mustang Mach-E for "copying" Tesla with the display screen, but then complimented the VW for doing other things similar to Tesla. Yes, Tesla did the humongous display screen first, but the size of a screen is just a characteristic, not a signature design trademark. The 2020 Ford Explorer had a 10.1" vertical touchscreen, which was quite startling to people unfamiliar with Teslas. The Mach-E's 15.5" touchscreen super-sized that approach, while keeping the vertical orientation and choosing to offer the traditional instrument display placement behind the steering wheel. Had they switched to a landscape screen and ditched the instrument display, I think you'd have a more salient point.
    I know there's only so much content to stuff into a video, but a comparison of the safety features of the two vehicles would have been great to see. Blind-spot monitoring, front/rear cross-traffic alerts/aides when pulling out of parking spaces, and front/rear/overhead camera views are a few things I'm thinking of.
    Some final notes -- You may know these, but your viewers may not:
    Non-Tesla vehicles (including the VW ID.4) are not constrained to just the Electrify America network, as any station offering a CCS connection can be used (ChargePoint, EVGo, and multitudes of other companies). When buying an ID.4 is the 3 years of unlimited charging included at EA stations, which is a pretty good value for those that have EA stations where they need them.
    Ford did offer test-drive-only Mustang Mach-E models this summer for extended test drives. I was fortunate enough to have an overnight experience, but previous to that, Ford dealers were offering multiple-day test drives to interested people. I agree with you that dealerships/manufacturers need to get people in these vehicles to show them off to as many people as possible to build awareness and demand beyond the low-hanging fruit of those that are inherently interested in EVs.
    The ID.4 has the potential to be the CRV of near future, where people buy them because they are (can be relatively) economical, they are useful, and they are a good value for everyday purposes. Are they the pinnacle of design and performance? The Accord, Camry, and CRV/RAV4 have proven that cars don't need to be either of those things to be very successful products.

    • @Chrisb8s
      @Chrisb8s 2 года назад +1

      I agree, it is unfair to compare the ID4 to a Tesla Model Y, it should be compared to mini vans or other ICE cars. I know that the Y is much more expensive, but then again, it has much better performance, feels sporty and has a longer range. These 2 cars are in the same league. I can see the ID4 being very popular. Most people could care less about performance, they just want a car than can haul a lot of stuff.. and this is that car.

    • @mondotv4216
      @mondotv4216 2 года назад +1

      @@Chrisb8s But the price for the long range is the same as the ID4 he drove? Sure, in the US you still get the tax rebate, but I thought it was a fair comparison. ID4 for the school run, Tesla for those who like an aggressive ride. No one ever bought a 911 for the comfortable ride. Tesla get's criticised a lot for it's minimalistic interior, but overall I reckon it's a cut above the ID4 but not as good as say the Polestar 2. If you compare the ID4 interior to a Golf it's nowhere near as nice. And I'm not sure what's with the 1950's leather patches on the elbows - it's as bad as the woodgrain on the Chinese made Model 3. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Also, the closest in price from Tesla would have been a Model 3 SR+ and I wanted an SUV so this is a good value for me, especially with that $7,500 tax credit. Now, if I didn’t mind spending more, then maybe I would have gone Tesla. In my country the ID.4 GTX costs €51k with red paint job and 21'' wheels. The model Y long range costs €71k.

    The real comparison is the ID.4 vs. Fisker Ocean since they're both going after the SUV market and in the sameprice range.

    Nice review, Ben. Just got my Y last weekend. Same spec as yours with the Gemini wheels. Has a rattle I believe is coming from the front passenger seat. It stops when I hold onto the seat. The console drawer cover wouldn’t stay open on delivery. Scheduled service for that and they guy showed up right when he said he would and had it fixed in 15 min. Only 1 other fit issue with the driver’s sides A pillar gap not lined up exactly like the passenger side, but love the car anyway. I’ll schedule service for the seat. The rattle is gonna get on my nerves. Happy Sunday!

      I think I have the only Model Y with no squeaks, rattles, or bad panel gaps. The only bad news is that I have to give it back 18 months from now!

    I'll also say that it's EV's like this ID.4 that will appeal to people just coming out of gas vehicle....drives very similar to a Tiguan, Rav4, Crv, etc....nothing to scare them off. I test drove a first edition (rear wheel drive), you should've seen the turning radius on that one... with no front motor it was hilarious how much the front wheels turned. I get that you have a Tesla and youre a performance car guy but you did a pretty great job at comparing/reviewing this ID.4. I don't care as much at the "performance" aspects of cars but love cars in general. I'm a Volvo guy personally, and I thought this drove great for me. I also drove a Model y LR with the 20's ...I loved it too but as everyone's aware, it's ride is too stiff.

      If Tesla would fix the ride, build quality, and price, they would sell out. I dont care about auto pilot, 0-60 in 2 seconds...Just sell me a car that will last me for 250,000 miles at a good price.

    1. Tesla has easier charging network and better location, but you have to pay. ID4 comes with 3 years free charge from EA. So removing charging from the equation doesn't do any good to the VW. 2. ID4 AWD has 8.8 inches ground clearance which is a proper SUV clearance. Model Y long range got just over 6 inches. It's not a "small difference". 3. That start button on ID4 is just for passenger, you don't need to use it. Simply press the brake and you are ready to go. 4. You mentioned the sunroof but I was shocked you didn't discover it has a sunshade. 5. I have to disagree with your claim of "similar build quality". Based on my test drive, VW feels way better in built quality. The brand new model y I tested already has 2 interior parts broken. But I totally agree, you need to test drive yourself. That crazy acceleration on Tesla is nice in the beginning, but I'd rather have a better built vehicle that is comfortable for my family to do road trip other than impress some random friends.

    The Tesla cult and its leader is a large part of why I don't have a Tesla, though once a fan and investor.
    Today I learned that Tesla fans don't know how to turn on an ID.4 (sit in seat, press brake pedal), and don't know who Herbert Diess is (VW CEO). None of that is surprising. Tesla people are in their own little world. Good for them.

    Turning radius on this AWD is actually bigger at 36' comparing to the RWD ID4 that has 33'. You'll be even more impressed by the RWD ID4 s turn radius. Although both are way smaller than the Tesla.

    It’s good to see some nice EV’s entering the market. I have a 2021 Tesla M3 and a 2021 Mach E, so I’m not going to be in the market for a new EV for another 5 years. I’m hoping competition drives EV prices down with time.

    • @asheeeesh27
      @asheeeesh27 2 года назад +1

      Prices will probably go down. A lot of companies are now aiming for affordable EV cars like Lucid and Tesla. You should definitely invest in some EV stocks too as they are going high.

      @@asheeeesh27 i sold all my Tesla stock in February 2021. I thought legacy manufacturers were a decade behind Tesla, but one test drive in the Ford Mach E showed how fast Ford has caught up, and that meant others would as well. I still think Tesla is a great company however I could not justify the stock price. I had a great ride with Tesla stock and it contributed to my early retirement.

    • @E_Static
      @E_Static 2 года назад +1

      Same here. I have both the 3 and a Mach E. Both are great vehicles and don't believe the gap between Tesla and the competition is nearly as wide as some contend. And with the recent price increases Tesla has made it's difficult to not look at the competition, especially those who qualify for the $7500 rebate.

    I have a model Y and am returning it under the state lemon law. I do a lot of interstate driving and the Tesla will suddenly brake without warning when on cruise control. All Tesla models have this dangerous defect and Tesla is unable to fix it. The dealer has cancelled 5 visits "to research the problem further." If you use cruise control, do NOT buy a Tesla

    Ben is a very charasmatic and funny guy. You should be in show business. Very informative covering all of the bases here. Great job buddy. I just reserved mine today. The driveshaft on my "92 Bronco fell off on the 101 recently, got that fixed, and now it won't smog because the one computer chip it has behind the dash cluster went out. Really? That can happen? C'mon, haven't I repaired you EVERY TIME YOU BREAK DOWN? Always something major. Every time. Anyhoo, that is what it really took for me to decide and grow up, at 48 mind you, and buy a new car. Besides, the Hornet is getting the bodywork done. I'll probably have to sell both to afford my half of this new amazing VW. Anybody interested in a Bronco? Enough about me. You broke it all down like a champ Ben. My father's birthday is on Oct. 28th. Weird. Must be a sign.

    Thanks for review. Funny as always. I think u got it right that the Y is about performance and the ID4 is about comfort . . . . It’s okay to be different. These cars are brothers not enemies. One likes to race in the canyons and the other likes slow walks on the beach and that’s okay.

    Very good review. But lets be honest about the price. The cheapest variant of the Tesla is more expensive than the most expensive variant of the VW. And for cost conscious customers, they could get into the VW for a little over half the cost of the Tesla. So generally in car reviews that would be pretty clearly stated, so Its probably worth noting it here.

      Also, the ID.4 qualifies for the federal tax credit which Tesla’s cars don’t qualify anymore. On top of that, the ID.4 comes with three years free charging at Electrify America. The ID.4 is a win win. I’m going to the dealership next week because I really want it!
