The box shape and other styling ques of the Ioniq 5 will age like an AMC Pacer/ Gremlin from the 70s or a Chevy Citation from the 80s. The Nissan Ariya looks better than both the Tesla and Hyundai.
A box is better than an egg. The model y and x are ugly. Used to be a Nissan fan... not anymore. Their styling goes out of date so fast and resale value on them are terrible
Edmunds - the IONIQ 5 is an OK, car its Better than the MX-30, Mach-e, iD.4 , BOLT and LEAF, but it SIMPLY cannot match a DUAL MOTOR Long Range model Y. the IONIQ 5 is too HEAVY , too SLOW , too Short RANGE, and its LESS Efficient than the Model Y. the IONIQ 5 has a REALLY CRAPPY Drivetrain and EV Platform called GIMP , and trust me the IONIQ 5 is a GIMP. but, both the KIA EV6 and IONIQ 5 should do well, but its NEVER going to SELL Tesla model Y numbers.
The Hyundai is stylish, comfortable, and practical. It should sell very well if Hyundai can produce enough of them. It has been out in Europe for a while, and I read good things from owners there. to me the Model Y has awkward proportions, is starting to look dated, and while some call the interior "minimalist" it strikes me as simply cheap. The biggest downside of owning a Tesla may be social. A large number of Tesla fans are particularly rude in their online comments. I haven't looked but I am sure there are some like that under this video. (and now I see a typical example just above this post)
Open front flat floor is fantastic. Don't care about the moving console per se, but having a place to move your right leg out occasionally is huge for driver comfort in my 6'3 50+ opinion.
Hyundai really nailed the design on this model. Looks very unique compared to any other designs I have seen thus far. They are going to dominate the future car market.

The Ioniq 5 is actually really nice. I’ve been waiting for them to release the final look of the ioniq 6. I hope they keep the original look from the concept car. That one was gorgeous.

Went to the dealer for a ID4..Came out with a Ionic 5 SEL...Love this thing ..Range is great, the car is soo smooth when driving, has alot of power, love the screens and the GPS,alot of space Biger than it looks front and back seats, super fast when charging it..I love it
Like you say, the Tesla's glass roof is killing sometimes if it is both hot and sunny. The Hyundai has the electrically adjusted shades. And, it opens and closes with style. I really like that thoughtful touch of Hyundai. And the seats that come with foot rests are also very nice ideas. I also like how the backseats can be moved back and forth to increase cargo room and the angle of the seat back can be adjusted. My mom has back problem and she needs the seat to be upright position. Hyundai is very thoughtful in a lot of ways and can be evident in its designs. Really nice EV from the brand.

The moving console is valuable. It allows you to be flexible to move side to side if you have to exit. So your parallel parking on a busy road... driver exits on passenger side. It's a convenience thing. Also think of just basic stuff like cleaning... vacuuming just got ten times easier.

The moving console will almost always be back. For those (hopefully) few times when you have five people in the EV, that middle rear passenger needs the extra legroom that moving the console forward creates. With only two rear passengers, moving the conole back brings the USB ports closer to their laps. I think it is a GREAT feature.
The guy obviously never tried to play in traffic to get in the car during rush hour. The sliding console makes it easier to slide into the driver seat from the passenger side. This feature is very handy, especially for the slow moving elderly.
We have a small upright cooler we use for road trips but it has only ever fit in the back. It will fit in the front with the Ionic 5. Also, have you ever bought something and you don't want it to tip over as you drive home? Put it in the center and hold onto it while you drive. Love it.

I just got an IONIQ5, SE, AWD. Just love it. Note I’m a big fan of Tesla, my whole family owns them and I’ve an early investor. So I’m a perfect candidate for their cars. It’s a great car that stands on it’s own but what influenced my decision specifically over Model Y: The ability to pick a trim- Tesla’s are all premium trim offering perks I just don’t care about so I appreciate being able to pick a lower trim and not have junk I don’t need in a car. Price (and tax rebate). Having a driving interface that has buttons and useful information… not just one screen. I do really find the center screen distracting when driving. 2 years of free charging. The plan that Tesla will eventually open up the Supercharging network to other cars (The charging network my mind is the single most distinguishing aspect of any Tesla. It’s crazy valuable.)
From a bang for your buck, in Canada it’s no competition for, the Ioniq 5 is just over $20K cheaper than Model Y LR, and I am talking about the fully loaded Ioniq 5. It is pretty well the same price as a Model 3 SR+ give or take a few hundred dollars these days.
Ioniq 5 AWD costs around 3000 CAD less than the Model Y LR here in Norway. If it had been priced at 42 000 cad total, for the whole car with everything it has, then it would be okay. For pretty much the same price as the Model Y, you instead get an outdated car that has a infortainment system that rivals 6 year old Volkswagen and a map that rivals a 15 year old Mercedes or BMW. I can't think of a single thing the Ioniq inforscreen does not do WORSE than a 2016 Passat GTE. I can find a few things it does on par or even better than my 2015 Golf stationwagon, but userfriendlynes, ease of use and so forth are horrible. And you get all of that outdated technology for 7500 CAD more than the ID4 GTX (With the GTX having less driving assists and so forth because of computer part shortage)
@@f0t0b0y the ioniq 5 was without the glass roof. With the glass roof it costs the same as the model y. I am split between the ID4 and the Model Y atm. Both of them are a far better buy here in Norway than Hyundai is. It is hard to state how poorly the screen and everything on it worked, compared to both the model y and id 4. When it comes to id4 VS Y it mostly comes down to space and ease of daily use. And there it seems the model y has a larger trunk
It's amazing to me that for 70k you have a car that you hear noises everywhere. It's also amazing that you don't get ventilated seats either. Even when you go with a less expensive model Y you're still spending 14k more if you factor in the tax credit.

I agree on the price points, it's one reason I settled on a Toyota Rav4 Prime PHEV as I got it for 33k after rebates last year. Once charging networks get up to speed I'll be looking at an all electric vehicle again but it's good to see Hyundai is putting out good options at reasonable price ranges.
The moveable console is perfect for tall people. I always struggle to find a car where my knee is not squeeze between the wheel and the console. Removing the console is real freedom!

The Hyundai may be the one for me. I’ve owned two Hyundais over the past 6 years and they’ve been solidly built and reliable. The squeaking, rattling and general cabin noises attributed to the Tesla are a deal breaker for me. If the Ioniq isn’t right yet for whatever reason, I’ll wait. I don’t want a car that rattles. I grew up with too many of those.
Tried both cars and had a MY on order for delivery in February. Tried the MY again and concluded the sport suspension of MY is to rough for my taste. The MY is not comfortable to ride, not luxurious to ride and I guess the lack of suspension will make everything rattle in a couple of years. Cancelled my MY order and ordered the I5, even though my heart was with a Tesla

That ioniq 5 is looking like a winner for me. My wife has a model 3 sr+ which is great. But I miss the gauge cluster and Android auto. Great review guys
Ramon, I totally agree to that. If you really are interested in driving cars, you want that welcoming, cosy and inspiring feeling when you enter the car. Imo Tesla do not give you that at all. Have you checked the new EVs from Genesis? The driver position/interior are amazing looking in those cars.
Great review. I currently have both cars, I'm selling the Tesla and keeping the Ioniq5. I did't intent to have both cars, I just got tired or waiting for the Tesla Y which took 7 months to get here! In the meantime, I looked for a light Ioniq5 with a light interior. When my local dealer called to say they had one coming in I grabbed it. Keeping the Ioniq5 based on cost, how quiet it is to drive, and better visibility. Tesla Y has some blind spots, and the glass roof makes it hot in the summer.
Funny, the "tesla front felt really confined" after coming out of the Hyundai. Maybe that open space in front of the Hyundai center console does have a purpose???
If you would have compared to the long range model Y it would have been much better since you seem to care a lot about range and comfort and price. Also Tesla has improved a lot since the model shown on this video so it’s kind of unfair to compare a 2 year old car to a brand new car from factory.
I agree. If you don't _really_ need AWD the RWD gives better range, is lighter, and less expensive. Driving both the VW ID.4 and Mach E RWD models I found off the line performance and responsiveness to be better than similar type gas cars. If you don't drag race or live in a snowy Minnesota small town I would go for a single motor.
The floor space in the front is so useful! I use it everyday for my work bag. Otherwise it would fall down and all the contents come out. That's probably one of my favorite features on the Ioniq

The Ioniq 5 I got last week is not without some unexplained noises; mileage may vary as they say. But it rides pretty nice. It scoots along if you need to merge. I chose it because the size price and range are a reasonable combo and because it looks the business. I’m not in a Tesla price range, the quality control is not there and I don’t need mega speed.
I live in Norway and the Ioniq 5 costs equally as much as the Model Y here. I chose the model y due to the trunk size as I have 2 huskies. Unfortunately, the Ioniq 5 did not have a suitable sized trunk.
God I really love the design of the ioniq. They really did a great job on this one! I‘d still prefer Tesla just because of the yk acceleration but that is only a side thing. The ioniq is amazing
You bought a nice car, I hope you enjoy it for years to come. There is plenty of room for competition and other vehicles besides a Tesla. I just checked the US Hyundai website. An AWD Ioniq 5 is $55,000, with less range (60-80 miles based on wheel choice) and performance than the AWD Model Y that is $59,000 (2 seconds faster 0-60 in the Y).
The Ioniq 5 definitely looks better … that’s a definite plus for me and the whole time he was talking in the Tesla all I could notice was the b pillar gap at the ceiling.
Model Y Performance owner here: I was initially concerned about the sun coming through the glass roof. It is absolutely perfectly tinted. On a sunny day, you can’t tell. Yet it’s light enough to get good over head light and visibility when looking above. -I have no creaking issues like you mentioned you had. Maybe quality control improved. -regarding the wireless charging platform on the Model Y… I’m sick of other car companies acting like everyone doesn’t need a dedicated place for our phones these days. The model Y is the first to do it so perfectly. I do wish my car had the surrounding camera options like the Ionic. That 3D view is awesome. And the birds eye view should be standard on Tesla by now. Thanks for the video. Excited to see improvements through competition.
Buying a Tesla is the worst mistake I ever made in my life. My Model 3 died (fully charged) 3 times and Tesla's "Let them eat cake" customer service was either MIA or openly hostile when they bothered to respond. Also the thing rattled like a bowl of marbles. Getting rid of it was a worse experience than getting rid of a tattoo because I couldn't sell it without getting it repaired which Tesla was unwilling to do.
We bought an Ioniq 5 about a year and a half ago.I love the car. It's quick, roomy, and the seat doesn't hurt my sciatica. It's just fun to drive. Another interesting thing about the ioniq 5 is that, usually before you buy a car, you don't see them on the road much. But, after you buy it, they're EVERYWHERE! In the year and a half that we've owned the Ioniq 5, I have seen maybe a handful (5 or 6) of them in the wild.
In Canada the Model Y starts at $75,000+, The Ioniq 5 tops out at $60,000. Imo you'd be out of your mind to spend that kind of money on the Model Y with the current competition. And from this guy's impressions, the Ioniq 5 seems much more refined
@@Handlethis342 you're basing that off pure opinion, VW iD.4 dual motor can be had under $50,000 CAD, incredible value given incentives. And you can get into a Mach-E starting at just over $50,000 CAD, versus $75,000+ for Model Y. Opting for AWD dual motor still puts the Mach-E under $60,000 with the standard range battery, it doesn't reach Model Y price until you equip it with dual motor + long range
Today was the first time I save an Ioniq 5 on the road and I did not know what it was. I caught up, and was impressed with the overall shape of the car, and the dash screens really caught my eye. If Hyundai can do away with the "dealership games" that have made buying a car on the second worst experience to a root canal, they can really make hay here. So far the EVs that I've had from traditional manufactures have all been tainted from the sales, and service that we all have come to dislike about them.

The rear seat can recline one more level, did you notice that the trunk cover has 2 positions? If you put it in the rear position, the rear seat can recline more.

I’m a huge Tesla Fan and love what they have done for the industry… but the styling of the Y just couldn’t sway me and now with massive price increases (due to more demand than supply) and competitive options like this Ionic 5, it is much harder to go for Tesla. Instead I would go with the Ionic 5 and would buy Telsa stock with the money saved. The Ionic styling, build quality, features (heads up, user interfaces, V2L) and positive reviews really help the decision.
I'm surprised at this point that you would say the EV whine is coming from the batteries. Come on Edmunds, EV's are coming strong to the market. You should know by now that the noise is from the drive units.

It seems that Tesla defaulting the selection of the $2000 20" wheel option is confusing a lot of journalists, whose research abilities could be one upped by a third grader. Ioniq 5 Limited starts at $54,500 without destination, but is eligible for the $7500 tax credit, bringing the price down to $47,000.
@@JAM_2024 if you decide to pay of it - you can always walk away from any dealer markup. also decline everything that they offer as an add-on, no matter how much they push for it. Perhaps keep GAP insurance - because the value of the car drops the second it leaves the lot. Small investment to protect the investment into a vehicle.

I absolutely love the look of the Ioniq 5. If I wasn't a broke college student, it would be my next car. I really hope they keep the boxy styling in future models of the ioniq 5. I currently own an older Hyundai Santa Fe and every hyundai that I've driven has been a more comfortable drive than driving a toyota or honda. Hyundais at the top for me right now.
Coming from a Honda Odyssey van, which sits higher up and has the flat floor, I really like that feature. On road trips we put a flat bottom bag or container in the middle to hold drinks and snacks and it’s just pleasant and easy. I really like that about the Hyundai.
I'd take the Ioniq 5 over the Tesla and it's not even close for me. The only reason I'd go with Tesla is due to their charging network, other than that it's Ioniq 5 all day everyday. If Hyundai can catch up even just a little with their own charging network, for me Tesla would be in the rearview mirror, hell not even, they wouldn't be visible to me at all.

Very fair comments. But for a $20,000 price difference and an additional $10,000 for the Autopilot, the Tesla falls short on value and important features like cooled seats, heads-up display, reclining back seats, the cool roof and many more. The Ioniq 5 may be slower by a few seconds on 0-60mph. But what's the ruch? All the other features make you want to spend a few additional seconds in the car.
Got a bit over 1'000 miles in our Ioniq 5. Biggest drawbacks: - No rear wiper (idiotic decision) - lane keep assist - prehistoric nav system (which makes the HUDs AR functions pretty useless) - BIG winter range penalty Plus points: - gorgeous design - great ride - good power - lots of smart features - driving it just makes me happy Never seriously considered a Tesla (too many dealbreakers for me)
Never underestimate the importance of a few quick buttons as opposed to having swipe a darn screen just to lower the ac or radio. Its not only a convenience but also a safety issue.
It would be smart. The demand for the ioniq 5 is gigantic in Europe alone. IF you order one right now in my country, you have to wait for over a year. IIRC they will roll out first in a couple of US states and then the rest of the states?
The Model Y LR is a much more accurate comparison. MY LR has softer suspension which makes ride quality better, it’s much quieter regarding road noise, and it sits an inch higher off the ground. Can buy the acceleration boost upgrade to make it almost as fast as the MY P.
Doesn't change the fact that with the tax credit you're talking roughly about 14k difference and there are things that you just don't get in the Tesla. Yes the Tesla is faster in the 1/4 but seriously, how many people will ever drag race them?
@@RDRUclips54 I bought my Tesla because first off they have been making EV’s the longest and when you drive one you can tell it’s a much smoother ride, especially with the regenerative brakes. Second Tesla has by far the biggest and best supercharging network, so I never have to worry about range on a long trip. Third, Tesla is the only company that has a giant screen in the middle that I can stream Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, etc. I use that feature all the time. One time I went camping and my Tesla was the only thing that got any service so everyone wasn’t able to use their phone but I still got to camp in AC with my Netflix. Even though my Verizon phone didn’t even have service. Tesla is the only company that will send a service guy to my house for service, they will do service in my garage. There’s so many reasons to go Tesla I could go on forever, I trust Tesla battery packs not to spontaneously combust and I can’t say that about their competitors like Kia/Hyundai. Also my car is only a year old, I bought it for 55k and I could sell it for 70k right now if I wanted to. Unfortunately I don’t want to sell my car. Also the tax credit you mentioned is honestly BS because Tesla actually gives set in stone pricing, which means you’re not paying more or less than MSRP. If you try to buy any other brand EV right now they are all charging $5,000 or more above MSRP sticker price. So those savings you mentioned don’t exist. 😂

As far as pricing goes I don't know what you got for 55k but everything I price is well over 60k, plus there are dealerships that don't charge over sticker,, you just have to find them. You are correct on one thing, Tesla has definitely been doing it the longest. And they are the most expensive, so with those 2 you would think you wouldn't have any build quality problems and you damn sure shouldn't be hearing any rattling noises. Supply and demand genius. Service was at my house because I had a scuff on one of my speaker panels, so they replaced it for free. You’ve heard people complain about their service? Cool sounds like you’re a real expert. I speak from personal experience, you speak out of your ass. You honestly don’t know Jack about anything you’re saying. Tesla has better service because like I said my Phone is Verizon, and Tesla uses the AT&T network. So where I was at only the very few people who had AT&T have service. I have a Model Y and an Ioniq 5 on order. Model Y is much more expensive, but it might fit our lifestyle more. I really enjoyed the way the Ioniq 5 drove - supple, comfortable, but it's not as practical as I was hoping it would be (although the price difference between the two can buy a lot of roof boxes and bike racks). Still a tough decision ahead. I really wish Edmunds had been able to find a new Model Y long range to compare.
Ioniq 5 is same or more than the Model Y in both the SEL and Limited AWD trims. They are adding at a minimum 5k adjustment. Just test drove both today and definitely liked the Y over the Ioniq 5. Range and Charging Infrastructure is better with Tesla until Electrify America catches up (another 3-5 years probably). Build quality definitely better in the ioniq 5 but when i test drove the y today it wasn't a huge drop off as it was in the past.
The price difference in Norway amounts to Model Y being about 3400 dollars more. But the Ioniq has a worse infortainment system than my 2015 Golf, a lot worse than the 2016 Passat GTE. The map is the worst I have seen in the last 15 years. My father sold used cars, so I have seen a lot of the different maps that have been since they first started to appear in cars. You cannot use the map to navigate for long trips, as you can with the Tesla and VW. Even with a 80 percent charge, and a drive that is 600 km, it tells you to charge right away. It doesn't plan ahead. You also cannot navigate the map in any meaningful way. You cannot place the map in front of you, and the headup display isn't visible with my sunglasses on. The headup was also much better on the ID4. It doesn't remember regen (accident waiting to happen, if you one day don't remember to put it into I-pedal) and the speedometer is behind the wheel. I had to move my whole upper body to see the screen. Compared to the ID4, which is right there, or the Tesla which you have to adjust your eyes slightly to the side. No body movement at all with those cars. I would say it felt like you got 15 000 dollars more car with the Model Y. When a ID4 with few "add-ons" costs 5700 dollars less than the Ioniq, it also is hard to justify. It is espeically hard to justify the car, since the screen is at least 6 years outdated and the map at least 12 years....
@@adnanjusic4890 true, but they cannot remove the hazzle it is to just do anything on the screen at all, without deleting everything they have done and pretty much starting from scratch. And you do not get buttons for the things you use the most manually, at a service location, adding and removing stuff from the dash. Also, Hyundai doesn't have thwt great a track record with those updates. This is not their first ev you know Edit: and they cannot change the placement of the screen in front of you either. Much much much easier to see my speed in a model y. They can update where the speedometer is located, but until they do, it is invisible for me while driving
I forgot to mention I love the movable console as I work from the car and moving the console all the way to the front gives me a resting spot for my laptop, when not working I move I leave it in the same position so my dog can easily get in and out of the back and it works great! The Fruck works great for my level 2 charger, that way I do not need to unload the car when I am road tripping and staying at hotels or relatives.
I can't believe I prefer the Ioniq 5. It honestly seems like a better car based on this comparison. It seems like a good first EV...like not thrusting you into the smartphone car culture like Tesla has done. Instead, it's like they are keeping a lot of stuff many of us like in our gasoline cars... physical buttons on the dash etc. Just seems better. Now that I think about it, I think the only drawback is chargers. I'm willing to bet In about 5 years, Tesla will not be on top of the EV game. Especially if electrify America steps their game up which I think they will. I actually really likes the model Y, until I watched this video and now I realize Tesla really hasn't been thoroughly challenged and when they do...it's gonna hurt, they aren't gonna get away with the bs they been getting away with.
I'll take that bet :) Yes, Tesla will have competition but no other company will be able to mass produce EV's as efficiently and as cheaply as Tesla. Their corporate structure and ingenuity will keep them at least 5 years ahead of everyone else!
You are buying a Tesla for tech, super car performance, autopilot, minimalism, range, network imo. That isn't important to many people. Lots of choices EV and ICE if not.

@@physics77guy I don't like the fact that Tesla is relying more and more on the Chinese battery manufacturers using less expensive lower technology LFP batteries, while Koreans are building 12 Lithium-Ion battery factories in America which means thousands of jobs for Americans. Pretty soon, Tesla will be at the mercy of the Chinese PRC government, if they are not already.

As far for the ride quality and the range, you should compare with Model Y Long Range. MYP has lowered suspension and 21 inch Wheels, so the ride will be more rough and lower range

I've had my Ioniq5 for app 8monhs and i absoloutly love it, i've driven (not owned) mustang, Tesla S/Y/3 and VW and i would still pick the IQ5 over any of those.
Agreed. Hyundai is hugely more experienced in making cars, and their quality standards are light years beyond Tesla. Not so long ago, Tesla was making cars in the *parking* *lot* , under tents. Tesla factory workers are also not well-compensated union workers.
What a great review. I drove a 2020 Tesla Model Y which I got rid of after too much phantom braking that became dangerous (I know I was in the minority experiencing that much). I purchased an Ioniq 5 Limited AWD like this one. Overall I’ve been happier with it. I do miss the way the Model Y takes corners, and how tight it’s steering is (the Ioniq’s is tight only in Sports mode). I miss the OTA updates. But I don’t miss anything else. Btw, that space in front of the console is where my daughter puts her school backpack on the way to school, or where I put my work backpack on the way to a meeting. The sliding console is really useful when you’re using that luxury front seat feature leaning it all the way back while waiting for charging or for someone at an appointment. Moving the console back gives you access to things on it while lying down. Finally, I too find the Hyundai’s HDA2 better than Autopilot. It is far less aggressive in it’s moves and it never, and I mean never, phantom brakes. That alone is a breath of fresh air.
I also own a 2020 Model Y. Phantom braking and rattling noises are real. I also don't like the fact that I don't get AM radio which was not mentioned in this video. I'm very skeptical about full self-driving becoming a practical reality for Tesla (and maybe for anybody) within my lifetime. I love being able to avoid gas stations and the convenience of the supercharger network, but Tesla has left the door open for EV competitors.
@@davemills4211 Elon's mission is to get the world onto EV transportation, not necessarily TESLA transportation. He doesn't mind competition, in fact he welcomes it. Everybody wins. Teslas are fantastic cars - in my opinion they are the best cars on the road. You are welcome to disagree and buy something else. But Tesla raised the bar pretty high for what's expected in a car today, so whether or not you buy a Tesla, the car you end up with is probably going to be pretty good, and you can thank Elon for lighting a fire under the car industry's ass for that.

I really want a company like Hyundai to become the better choice so I don't need to support Musk anymore, but that time hasn't come quite yet (getting close though). There is a lot to like about the Ioniq 5 and 6, some things definitely better than Tesla, but Tesla's efficiency, charging network, software, and tax rebates till put it ahead for now.
Both vehicles offer unique and innovative features. Hyundai's V2V/V2L is fantastic, turning the car into a mini-generator. Tesla's software, with their Toybox, Arcade, and Theater, not to mention endless OTA updates, are a lot of fun. I think, as with any major purchase, it will depend on what's most important to you. Tesla's Supercharger network, and how it's integrated into the car's navigation and battery management systems, is the best if you frequently do road trips. The non-Tesla charging network is still playing catch up. But if that's not important to you, the Hyundai's vented seats, more traditional interior, and overall design may work better. So, do your research. Figure out what car works best for you. Personally, I don't think these two compete due to the huge price difference. $60k for an MY LR puts the Tesla in another price bracket. I think the Hyundai competes more directly with something like the VW ID.4 and others that with pricing closer to $45-55k. I do agree that there are now a lot more EV choices. Competition is always a good thing.
V2L is a GREAT way do Shorten your battery life. TESLA powerwall is Superior, and every HOME should get 2 , if they want to own a EV. but, you only need 1 to start saving on Electricity. I bought , POWERWALL in 2018 w/ SOLAR and EV charging, I have NOT paid an Electric bill since 2018.

Affordable is a subjective term. The fact that I was able to buy one makes it affordable to me because I'm not rich at all. Without incentives, the Ioniqs aren't exactly cheap either. The price is a fluid thing because of the insane demand. If they were 30-35k, people would have to be on 2+ year waitlists.
wow I love how this guy is being so honest that the Ioniq5 is better in a bunch of ways... most Tesla owners would not be able to talk that openly about the fact that the Tesla is built to a certain standard, that isn't really for me (in looks, nor in hearing creaks and rattles and having a less smooth, potentially less responsive ride).
As an owner of an Ioniq 5, I must unfortunately confirm that there are some issues with build quality here as well as some other software and tech issues. Hyundai are working on that, but I don't buy that whole "Tesla build quality is crap" narrative.
@@bilgyno1 I have 25k miles my dad has 45k miles in Teslas. Either have never had a problem. There is nothing wrong with Teslas build quality today. They have improved a ton over the last 10 years. Edmunds don't want you to know this because they are earning their money from Ford and GM.
I think it was a pretty fair review, but as you said, your Model Y is over a year old and Tesla has continued to improve their fit and trim as well as other improvements, but I cannot disagree with you on that. My pick would be the Tesla Model Y. On an SUV style car, space is paramount. That extra space under the rear can hold all your car stuff, which makes most cars look junky. Also (as you said) the Tesla Supercharging networks make the Model Y a car you can take cross-country trips in. I think that would not be a fun trip in the Ioniq. And the OTA updates really put the Y over the top!

I have a Model 3 and couldn’t agree more about the rattles and creaks. You’ve answered my question about whether my next car should be the Y or the Ioniq 5!
After hours of comparison videos and deep dives into the Inoiq 5, I finally test-drove the SEL trim and was very impressed, although the matte gunmetal gray was not my thing and I would like the Premium trim with the longer range. It definitely does look and feel larger than I thought it would, and the interior was nicely laid out. I wasn't crazy about the two horizontal touch screens at first - they were so stark and white - and the driver's panel was a little weird - at first. I actually like the night setting and would consider using it during the day as well because the white screens are bland looking in my opinion. Considering I had never experienced the controls before, everything was fairly intuitive. I am not crazy about having to rely on both the touch screen and the buttons beneath it to control the fan, etc, but perhaps there is a way to just use one or the other. Also, as I was driving, I reached over to turn the volume knob and my hand grazed the "Warmer" setting of the temp control. I didn't realize anything had happened until it started to get very warm and I looked over to see that the temp had increased quite a bit (It was 100 degrees outside). The location of the shift changer took a little getting used to, but it will grow on me. The back seating area is HUGE! My husband is 6'4" and had a LOT of head and leg room available. I'm tall as well, and not getting any younger, so having the seat height higher makes it much easier (and more graceful in a dress) to get in and out of compared to my Clubman. I was bummed that USB-C charging ports aren't yet available - why not put one of each side by side? I'm in Houston, so I am not as concerned about not having a rear wiper, but it does rain torrentially at times, so having one on my Mini Clubman is indeed helpful. My only other experience with an EV was in the Polestar 2 during my trip home to WA state. I LOVED that car but did have my stomach in knots on my first leg because I couldn't stop worrying that I would run out of power since I was driving over the Cascade mountain range. It was stressful even though the car was displaying my range and how many miles remaining upon arrival. Once I got over that first trip and the hurdle of finding a charging station that wasn't being used already, I knew an EV was for me. As I mentioned, I'm in Houston, and although one would think charging stations are few and far between, that's not the case and I can envision going to San Antonio, Waco, or Austin easily, as well as a trip to Dallas with only a quick charge needed. Oh and regarding Ryan's comment about not being sure about the moving console - well, since he probably doesn't carry a purse or bag, it may not seem important, but I am always having to deal with my purse and put it on my floorboard on the passenger side or on the seat, and having it on the floor within easy reach in the Ioniq 5 is definitely a plus. I am a huge car buff and the trim and interior features are important to me, so to make sure the Ioniq 5 is for me, I'm going to test-drive a couple other makes/models - the Genesis GV60, Mustang Mach-E, the Nissan Ariya (I sat in one while in WA - the Nissan guys let me charge my Polestar rental and they had a couple Ariyas there) - and, this may be crazy - the Fisker Ocean (the One trim is my preference). The only thing bothering me about Fisker is the brand has gone bankrupt before and even in the 4th largest city in the country, finding a dealer may be tough. I'll be checking out Edmunds reviews on these makes/models. Wish me luck - I'll be in an EV SUV in 2024 (or before if a cool '24 comes out before January).
Woman will love the space on the center floor. My wife removed the plastic center storage on her minivan so she had somewhere to put her bag. Apple Carplay and that HUD are huge pluses over the Model Y. Those exterior colors are sick. Look like custom aftermarket paint jobs. Impressed with Ioniq 5.
One thing you guys left out about the importance of the Hyundai. Dealerships. Yeah they suck but if you have a problem you have somewhere to go. And chances are they won't go "hmm idk give us 2 months to figure out the problem"
That flat space in front of the console is where my purse goes. Love it. I have all my stuff on hand and don't have to A. reach over if it's in the seat or on the passenger side floor B. Crowd my passenger by sticking it at their feet C. throw it in the back where I have to turn and take my eyes off the road to get my sunglasses or whatever
The Performance wheels and tires on the Teslas really lower the range. ID4 and Ionic5 were not on the market when I got my Model 3. I would’ve seriously considered both of them had they been although the supercharger network may still sway me to Tesla. In the meantime, I’d gotten used to the Tesla’s controls and they do have shortcuts on the stalk/steering wheel for the important stuff. Build quality, although much improved in my 2021 still pales compared to Hyundai and VW.

I like that the Ioniq5 comes standard with lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and HDA 1. I think they are the most convenient features to have for freeway commutes and long road trips. I really dislike that the only way to have similar features on a Tesla is by paying $10k for Full Self Driving. I know FSD has more features available, but I don’t necessarily need all of them.
I have a Palisade I’m assuming the system is the same and as in the Ioniq. The Hyundai tends to drift more and after a lane change you hold it there and watch the lines to know you’re locked in. With the Tesla it’s a more deliberate maneuver and it feels safer it’s more obvious when it’s engaged with Hyundai you really have to watch the lane monitor to make sure you’re in lane keeping mode.

You missed the fact that you can ask the Tesla to turn on wipers/heat/radio /AC /adjust fans etc etc. so many verbal commands mean you don’t have to look at the screen which is a much more safer drive.
@@amahdi just by pressing the button on the right side of the steering wheel and talk to the car. You can tell it to turn up / down the heat.. or just press and say “it’s too cold in here” many UTube videos about Teslas different voice commands. It’s not just a car but also a computer. That’s why you can’t compare other cars with Tesla.
The four dots on the steering wheel represent the letter "H" in Morse code. Been hearing stories about $4K-$10K dealer markups for the Ioniq 5 and a $400 dollar charge for a white paint-job.
I think the build quality in the Ioniq is due to Hyundai being a car company and not a tech company like Tesla. The noise and spoty fit is something I've heard alot about in the Tesla range. There are a number of new EVs out now and more coming in the next couple years. Tesla will need to step up their game. Big performance numbers are a neat trick but its in the everyday driving experience that a car needs to shine.
Bingo. Besides the biggest car enthusiasts no one cares about one extra second in the quarter mile. What I would care about is hearing creaks and cracks and getting crappy customer service if something breaks.
Totally agree. You hit it right on the nail. If Tesla does not ante up their quality control, it will never be main stream manufacturer. Tech without reliability can only get you so far.
Build quality is the toughest thing to control. That's why all the big manufacturers spend so much time on it. It's easy to slap a car together. To make it ride right, not make noises, and have good panel gaps, is very expensive and time consuming. Tesla will struggle for a long time in this area because their fan base consistently claims it doesn't exist or doesn't matter.
If Tesla and Toyota together put a product together using and playing up each company’s strengths, then I would consider buying a Tesla. Given so many complaints about the fit and finish, it’s very hard to make a purchase on a current Tesla vehicles. I am frankly surprised why so many people are buying them. Is it a luxury item that gives off sense of “I am a baller”?
As an OWNER of a 2021 Model Y, I gotta say, the Model Y doesn’t make much sense now at its current price point. When I purchased my Model Y last year, it was $48,000. I added third row seats, white interior, and a tow hitch. All in, it was about $52,000. I skipped the harsh riding 21” wheels and thus, I feel like I purchased the perfect car at the perfect time. However the Model Y now cost nearly $8,000 more to start, and I’m sorry, that’s just too much. It’s a BRILLIANT car, but price will kill anything.

I didn’t mention the Ionic 5 because quite frankly, I know they’re not gonna start at MSRP and I don’t necessarily think that they are a good deal either. My RUclips profile picture is years old and it’s a picture of my beloved TSX that got totaled. It was and probably still is one of my favorite cars. High revving 4, 6 speed manual, and Honda reliability (though if I’m being honest, it wasn’t THAT reliable haha!). I don’t feel the need to change my profile pic to match my current car. Damn. I just built a Model 3 two months ago and it came to $63,000...canceled it the next day. Built a Model Y for fun recently (came close to clicking the order button again) and it was $64,000! These were not even the Performance packages.
What I love about this comparison video, Ryan gives a really deep and realistic review of both cars, without any fanboism (as you always get from Tesla comparison videos. It allows shoppers really notice all the pros and cons in both cars, and make an educated choice based on their priorities.

EPA estimated rage is from when it stops charging to when it won’t move any more. Did you test that, or just to when the remaining range reads 0? Tesla leaves a large below-zero reserve, I have seen, so that fewer people will strand themselves…
I thought you were not supposed to drive your battery to zero percent or continually charge it to 100% (except for the LiFePO4 chemistry) This means that the real usable range is drastically reduced. Also battery degradation is more pronounced when pushing your battery to 100% then to 0. Tesla does not recommend doing this...
Honestly, with the column shifter and moving console, I wish the Ioniq 5 had an option for a front bench seat. It’d make the car even more practical since you could seat up to 6 people.

The N version of the Ioniq5 will be arriving in the not too distant future. Another performance test against the Tesla Y Performance would be warranted. BTW, I've driven both and think that Tesla's middle of the car console is just bizarre. Why they don't have at least a heads up display is beyond me and makes me wonder how that is safe. Hyundai have, it appears, made a concerted effort to be at the forefront of electrified vehicles. With their sister EVs from Kia and Genesis, they are the early favourites with more models such as the Ioniq 6 also due out soon.
I'm a huge Tesla fanboy, own a Model 3, and have a Performance Y coming soon. That being said, anyone who prefers the Ioniq 5 has every right to. I love the look and the materials. I do think Tesla continues to improve their fit and finish, but to say they have always been up to legacy automaker standards would be a lie (in the comparable price brackets, of course). At the end of the day, there's a lid for every pot, if you can find a lid these days. If a buddy of mine got an Ioniq 5, I'd be thrilled for them.

The Tesla would be my choice IF it was the same price as the Ioniq 5 AWD, but it's not even close, in Canada it's $77K for Model Y, and $55K for Ioniq 5 AWD. $22K is a large difference that would sway me to the Ioniq 5.
I bought the Ioniq 5, just seems a better car to me, the advantages the Model Y has, better efficiency, more boot space and more advanced lane keeping, doesn't justify the huge jump in price, everywhere else, the Ioniq 5 wins. Of course, other people's opinions will differ.
How much did i get it from the dealer??? If it not close to the MSRP u are getting ...then it might be closer to a model Y...if thats the case a Model Y seems like a better choice
Charging network, OTA updates giving your car new features and improvements over times, model Y is also way more sporty, and better for winter climates due to its incredible 4WD system
@@howtorawk i disagree on that... i have model y and its body roll is very significant and 4WD system you don't need much as we also have model 3 RWD and I live in north and we have found it to be having no issues in snow... but that wont diminish some inherit issues which we have with our both cars and that's also coming at a higher price point than ioniq 5... everyone can have justifications for their choice like iPhone and android lovers and haters but one has to accept what is good and bad in one or the other to get future improvements

Excellent review, except for the distracted driving. You mentioned Hyundai's superior build quality twice. Hint, Hint....now let's talk reliability. The Kona EV has excellent reliability, and hopefully the 5 will have same genes. Tesla, however, ranks 28th of 29 mfgs. for reliability, and near the bottom of the barrel in JD Power surveys. It's no longer a bargain, but I guess we'll never see Elon's "everyman's" car. The lack of a screen in front of the driver, or a head's up display, is a mortal sin of the Model Y and 3. I think the EV6 will also kick Tesla's ass. I don't see the superchargers as a major asset, since 90% of charging is done at home, overnight. I'd like to see a shootout between the Mach-e and the EV6. Forget about the Model Y.
Should be noted, the 3 and Y are the most reliable of the Tesla's in the lineup. X is bringing down their reliability score. Tesla still has the advantage in efficiency. Nobody can match their MPGe while offering the same performance.
@@mrbendel Read the reliability ratings from CR. The Model Y is their worst performing vehicle for reliability! So the Y is an even bigger dog than the X. And yes, the Teslas lead the pack in efficiency. But they don't seem to get close to their maximum range figures across the board.
@@mrbendel NHTSA shows Tesla vehicles involved in the most crashes and collisions among EVs. Autopilot is a primitive joke, totally NOT able to fully understand the road conditions under computer control.
The Model Y long range is now $50,000. With the excellent Tesla Supercharging network, and the awful CCS charging infrastructure, this is a no-brainer.
The moving console is useful when you put the seats in lounge mode(you need to move it back to put your hand on it), you can also use it to get out on the other side(which I used a couple of times) and then move it back forward when you are staying in the driving position.

I’ve driven both, and based on that alone, easily the Model Y. But you can’t compare any Ev to Teslas for 1 reason, and 1 reason only: Super Chargers. You can laugh at anyone that tells you that Tesla is “just a car company” because it’s not. No Ev will ever hold up to Tesla until they can build the same level of fast charging infrastructure that Tesla has.
Great review and comparison! Reinforces all the reasons why I ended up pre-ordering an Ionic 5 last week. Even though I really wanted a Tesla (3 or Y), but couldn't look past its only shortcoming and that is build quality. When you're paying premium prices, there's no acceptance for not premium build quality.
I test drive a Model Y today, and I think people really give it too much praise. The steering (albeit can be changed) felt very stiff, the regenerative braking is harsh and the interior materials didn't look up to par for the price. The 0-60 is the best about it, but everything was just...Meh

There are parking spots so tight exiting the vehicle on the opposite side makes the most sense. Also, what if you are suited up downtown in the rain - the road wash from a truck as you make your exit will make you as dish grey as the Queen. The sliding console is dope.
I have a 2021 model 3. I use voice commands very frequently such as for navigation, climate control, wipers and music. The response is excellent in the model 3.How does the Ioniq5 compare?
I have the same. Not a fanboy and I really love all vehicles, EV’s etc…test drive some other EV’s to compare and while as nice as they were, none of them could beat the driving experience of the model 3. The Volkswagen id4 is a really nice vehicle. Build quality was exceptional and ride comfort was fantastic. The UI though was absolutely awful and the driving experience was beyond boring. I honestly went back early and cut the test drive short because it was that bad to me. As far as consumer EV’s go, it seems Tesla is the only one not afraid to give the public actual performance instead of watering it down. Even the sr+ is nothing to sneeze at and will instantly haul butt at the press of a foot. Not sure why other regular manufacturers (not Porsche and other high end EV’s) seem so afraid to give people some performance feedback in the driving experience. Even the charge amount, Tesla gives you more to work with (advising daily charging up to 90% and 100% with LFP batteries) where the other brands say they have a huge range, but only suggest you to charge 80% max. One vehicle I will say that is really nice for the price and what you see is what you get is the Kia Niro EV.
I have owned an Ioniq 5 for two months now. Smoothest riding, quietest car I have ever owned including several luxury brands (Lexus, BMW, Mercedes). I test drove a Tesla. The speed is great fun, buit not practical or necessary for every day use. Nor do I miss the rattles, noise and spartan interior.
You can beat the brand value & stock market. But you can never match the build quality & experience of making a car of a company which have been making cars for several decades....
NIO and Xpeng are making cars with comparable or better build quality than the Japanese. Tesla just skimps on quality. That's a company culture, not a tech expertise. Musk is the reason these cars still come out like crap.
@@illegalmachine I agree, where I live in the bay area, I believe that Chargepoint for level 2 charging and EVGO for DC Fast charging are more popular than EA.
@@illegalmachine Here's your first then. I've driven over 20K miles in the last 10 months including at 8 long distance trips that required me to use DC fast charging and my primary source was EA. I've had very few issues and none that caused any significant delay to my trip. My longest trip was over 5K miles. Is EA as good as the Tesla network? NO. But it's rapidly catching up. You might also want to check out Out of Spec reviews. Kyle does a lot of cross country driving and last I checked he owns the record for a canonball run in a Porsche Taycan across America that even beat the Tesla record. Finally, you might want to think about the fact that unless Tesla opens up it's Super Charging network to non-Teslas, they will have the legacy network. They are rapidly becoming the BetaMax of the EV world.
@@ultratodd The other person who replied disagrees with you. Tesla is constantly expanding and upgrading the SC network. Unlike the broken and vandalized public chargers I see and read about. Jonny Lieberman for MT had a Taycan GTS a couple weeks ago and had to go to 4 different EA chargers to find one that worked. And it took a phone call to customer service to get the car charged. But TESLA is betamax? The system tied to my phone, that my car automatically knows to direct me, that automatically charges me when I plug my car in without installing or fumbling through a dozen apps and logins? 😂
@@MalamIbnMalam Yup. no comparison to the Tesla SC network that's integrated into your car. One app that controls your car and is tied to the SC network. Just pull up and plug in and play Sonic the Hedgehog.
We have a model 3 dual motor which is very similar to the Y. We drove about an hour to test drive the Ionic 5. The ionic 5 is much quieter for sure so I know what the guy is talking about. We've had the model 3 for almost 3 years now and we were very impressed with the Ionic 5. At the end, we were both convinced the Ionic 5 is a better car and we ordered one even though I have an order in for a model Y. There goes my $250 deposit but oh well. The Tesla still has the cool factor, but that's becoming less so, and the supercharging thing is a big plus. I would say the only reason to get a Tesla over the Ionic is the superchargers. Although the charging thing is temporary, hopefully. We'll save about $10K and the warranty is 5yrs 60K miles on the Hyundai.

The box shape and other styling ques of the Ioniq 5 will age like an AMC Pacer/ Gremlin from the 70s or a Chevy Citation from the 80s. The Nissan Ariya looks better than both the Tesla and Hyundai.
A box is better than an egg. The model y and x are ugly. Used to be a Nissan fan... not anymore. Their styling goes out of date so fast and resale value on them are terrible
Edmunds - the IONIQ 5 is an OK, car its Better than the MX-30, Mach-e, iD.4 , BOLT and LEAF, but it SIMPLY cannot match a DUAL MOTOR Long Range model Y.
the IONIQ 5 is too HEAVY , too SLOW , too Short RANGE, and its LESS Efficient than the Model Y. the IONIQ 5 has a REALLY CRAPPY Drivetrain and EV Platform called GIMP , and trust me the IONIQ 5 is a GIMP.
but, both the KIA EV6 and IONIQ 5 should do well, but its NEVER going to SELL Tesla model Y numbers.
The Hyundai is stylish, comfortable, and practical. It should sell very well if Hyundai can produce enough of them. It has been out in Europe for a while, and I read good things from owners there. to me the Model Y has awkward proportions, is starting to look dated, and while some call the interior "minimalist" it strikes me as simply cheap.
The biggest downside of owning a Tesla may be social. A large number of Tesla fans are particularly rude in their online comments. I haven't looked but I am sure there are some like that under this video. (and now I see a typical example just above this post)
Open front flat floor is fantastic. Don't care about the moving console per se, but having a place to move your right leg out occasionally is huge for driver comfort in my 6'3 50+ opinion.
Exactly my big leg gets pushed against a center console and is uncomfortable
Also, it’s pretty sweet to be able to enter through the passenger seat and slight right across if someone parked too close
The i3 has an open console area, and it is very comfortable as you can stretch out a bit, or get in the car from the passenger side door.
I hate, hate, hate center consoles. Legs cramp on long trips. Love the open space in my i3. Bravo Hyundai!!

Hyundai really nailed the design on this model. Looks very unique compared to any other designs I have seen thus far. They are going to dominate the future car market.
Hyundai also have better build quality than Tesla too. I would trust a Hyundai to break down less.

Went to the dealer for a ID4..Came out with a Ionic 5 SEL...Love this thing ..Range is great, the car is soo smooth when driving, has alot of power, love the screens and the GPS,alot of space Biger than it looks front and back seats, super fast when charging it..I love it
Like you say, the Tesla's glass roof is killing sometimes if it is both hot and sunny. The Hyundai has the electrically adjusted shades. And, it opens and closes with style. I really like that thoughtful touch of Hyundai. And the seats that come with foot rests are also very nice ideas. I also like how the backseats can be moved back and forth to increase cargo room and the angle of the seat back can be adjusted. My mom has back problem and she needs the seat to be upright position. Hyundai is very thoughtful in a lot of ways and can be evident in its designs. Really nice EV from the brand.
The moving console is also brilliant if you're only able to enter / exit the vechile from one side for whatever reason. It happens sometimes.
it happens when you have a small garage or tight parking spots in downtown. It certainly can be useful sometimes!

The moving console is valuable. It allows you to be flexible to move side to side if you have to exit. So your parallel parking on a busy road... driver exits on passenger side. It's a convenience thing.
Also think of just basic stuff like cleaning... vacuuming just got ten times easier.
Its fucken hopeless when a carton of milk gets jammed under the pedals.

The moving console will almost always be back. For those (hopefully) few times when you have five people in the EV, that middle rear passenger needs the extra legroom that moving the console forward creates. With only two rear passengers, moving the conole back brings the USB ports closer to their laps. I think it is a GREAT feature.
This guy obviously has never had to carry a purse or a tote with a computer. Women will understand how nice it is to have a place to put those things!
The guy obviously never tried to play in traffic to get in the car during rush hour. The sliding console makes it easier to slide into the driver seat from the passenger side. This feature is very handy, especially for the slow moving elderly.
We have a small upright cooler we use for road trips but it has only ever fit in the back. It will fit in the front with the Ionic 5. Also, have you ever bought something and you don't want it to tip over as you drive home? Put it in the center and hold onto it while you drive. Love it.

I just got an IONIQ5, SE, AWD. Just love it.
Note I’m a big fan of Tesla, my whole family owns them and I’ve an early investor. So I’m a perfect candidate for their cars.
It’s a great car that stands on it’s own but what influenced my decision specifically over Model Y:
The ability to pick a trim- Tesla’s are all premium trim offering perks I just don’t care about so I appreciate being able to pick a lower trim and not have junk I don’t need in a car.
Price (and tax rebate).
Having a driving interface that has buttons and useful information… not just one screen. I do really find the center screen distracting when driving.
2 years of free charging.
The plan that Tesla will eventually open up the Supercharging network to other cars (The charging network my mind is the single most distinguishing aspect of any Tesla. It’s crazy valuable.)
From a bang for your buck, in Canada it’s no competition for, the Ioniq 5 is just over $20K cheaper than Model Y LR, and I am talking about the fully loaded Ioniq 5. It is pretty well the same price as a Model 3 SR+ give or take a few hundred dollars these days.

Ioniq 5 AWD costs around 3000 CAD less than the Model Y LR here in Norway. If it had been priced at 42 000 cad total, for the whole car with everything it has, then it would be okay. For pretty much the same price as the Model Y, you instead get an outdated car that has a infortainment system that rivals 6 year old Volkswagen and a map that rivals a 15 year old Mercedes or BMW. I can't think of a single thing the Ioniq inforscreen does not do WORSE than a 2016 Passat GTE. I can find a few things it does on par or even better than my 2015 Golf stationwagon, but userfriendlynes, ease of use and so forth are horrible.
And you get all of that outdated technology for 7500 CAD more than the ID4 GTX (With the GTX having less driving assists and so forth because of computer part shortage)

I am split between the ID4 and the Model Y atm. Both of them are a far better buy here in Norway than Hyundai is.
It is hard to state how poorly the screen and everything on it worked, compared to both the model y and id 4.
When it comes to id4 VS Y it mostly comes down to space and ease of daily use. And there it seems the model y has a larger trunk
It's amazing to me that for 70k you have a car that you hear noises everywhere. It's also amazing that you don't get ventilated seats either. Even when you go with a less expensive model Y you're still spending 14k more if you factor in the tax credit.

I agree on the price points, it's one reason I settled on a Toyota Rav4 Prime PHEV as I got it for 33k after rebates last year. Once charging networks get up to speed I'll be looking at an all electric vehicle again but it's good to see Hyundai is putting out good options at reasonable price ranges.

The moveable console is perfect for tall people. I always struggle to find a car where my knee is not squeeze between the wheel and the console. Removing the console is real freedom!

The Hyundai may be the one for me. I’ve owned two Hyundais over the past 6 years and they’ve been solidly built and reliable. The squeaking, rattling and general cabin noises attributed to the Tesla are a deal breaker for me. If the Ioniq isn’t right yet for whatever reason, I’ll wait. I don’t want a car that rattles. I grew up with too many of those.
Their has been no complain on Y build Q for past year. In fact, with Rear and Front casting, new structural pack, Tesla body is unmatched.

Tried both cars and had a MY on order for delivery in February.
Tried the MY again and concluded the sport suspension of MY is to rough for my taste. The MY is not comfortable to ride, not luxurious to ride and I guess the lack of suspension will make everything rattle in a couple of years.
Cancelled my MY order and ordered the I5, even though my heart was with a Tesla

Great review. I currently have both cars, I'm selling the Tesla and keeping the Ioniq5. I did't intent to have both cars, I just got tired or waiting for the Tesla Y which took 7 months to get here! In the meantime, I looked for a light Ioniq5 with a light interior. When my local dealer called to say they had one coming in I grabbed it. Keeping the Ioniq5 based on cost, how quiet it is to drive, and better visibility. Tesla Y has some blind spots, and the glass roof makes it hot in the summer.
Funny, the "tesla front felt really confined" after coming out of the Hyundai. Maybe that open space in front of the Hyundai center console does have a purpose???

If it's full of passengers, that center front space gives room for a driver travel bag.
I love having that space for my handbag, laptop case, brief case, etc.
If you would have compared to the long range model Y it would have been much better since you seem to care a lot about range and comfort and price. Also Tesla has improved a lot since the model shown on this video so it’s kind of unfair to compare a 2 year old car to a brand new car from factory.

I agree. If you don't _really_ need AWD the RWD gives better range, is lighter, and less expensive. Driving both the VW ID.4 and Mach E RWD models I found off the line performance and responsiveness to be better than similar type gas cars. If you don't drag race or live in a snowy Minnesota small town I would go for a single motor.
The floor space in the front is so useful! I use it everyday for my work bag. Otherwise it would fall down and all the contents come out. That's probably one of my favorite features on the Ioniq

The Ioniq 5 I got last week is not without some unexplained noises; mileage may vary as they say. But it rides pretty nice. It scoots along if you need to merge. I chose it because the size price and range are a reasonable combo and because it looks the business. I’m not in a Tesla price range, the quality control is not there and I don’t need mega speed.
How do you like it so far? I want to test drive but it isn't coming to Georgia for a while.
AWD or RWD?
I live in Norway and the Ioniq 5 costs equally as much as the Model Y here. I chose the model y due to the trunk size as I have 2 huskies. Unfortunately, the Ioniq 5 did not have a suitable sized trunk.
God I really love the design of the ioniq. They really did a great job on this one! I‘d still prefer Tesla just because of the yk acceleration but that is only a side thing. The ioniq is amazing
You bought a nice car, I hope you enjoy it for years to come. There is plenty of room for competition and other vehicles besides a Tesla.
I just checked the US Hyundai website. An AWD Ioniq 5 is $55,000, with less range (60-80 miles based on wheel choice) and performance than the AWD Model Y that is $59,000 (2 seconds faster 0-60 in the Y).
The Ioniq 5 definitely looks better … that’s a definite plus for me and the whole time he was talking in the Tesla all I could notice was the b pillar gap at the ceiling.
The flat driver area is perfect for when you're parked tight somewhere and can only enter/exit from one side of the car!
With the Tesla you can summon it out of the tight parking spot!

Model Y Performance owner here:
I was initially concerned about the sun coming through the glass roof. It is absolutely perfectly tinted. On a sunny day, you can’t tell. Yet it’s light enough to get good over head light and visibility when looking above.
-I have no creaking issues like you mentioned you had. Maybe quality control improved.
-regarding the wireless charging platform on the Model Y… I’m sick of other car companies acting like everyone doesn’t need a dedicated place for our phones these days. The model Y is the first to do it so perfectly.
I do wish my car had the surrounding camera options like the Ionic. That 3D view is awesome. And the birds eye view should be standard on Tesla by now.

Buying a Tesla is the worst mistake I ever made in my life. My Model 3 died (fully charged) 3 times and Tesla's "Let them eat cake" customer service was either MIA or openly hostile when they bothered to respond. Also the thing rattled like a bowl of marbles. Getting rid of it was a worse experience than getting rid of a tattoo because I couldn't sell it without getting it repaired which Tesla was unwilling to do.

We bought an Ioniq 5 about a year and a half ago.I love the car. It's quick, roomy, and the seat doesn't hurt my sciatica. It's just fun to drive.
Another interesting thing about the ioniq 5 is that, usually before you buy a car, you don't see them on the road much. But, after you buy it, they're EVERYWHERE! In the year and a half that we've owned the Ioniq 5, I have seen maybe a handful (5 or 6) of them in the wild.
In Canada the Model Y starts at $75,000+, The Ioniq 5 tops out at $60,000. Imo you'd be out of your mind to spend that kind of money on the Model Y with the current competition. And from this guy's impressions, the Ioniq 5 seems much more refined

@@Handlethis342 you're basing that off pure opinion, VW iD.4 dual motor can be had under $50,000 CAD, incredible value given incentives. And you can get into a Mach-E starting at just over $50,000 CAD, versus $75,000+ for Model Y. Opting for AWD dual motor still puts the Mach-E under $60,000 with the standard range battery, it doesn't reach Model Y price until you equip it with dual motor + long range

Today was the first time I save an Ioniq 5 on the road and I did not know what it was. I caught up, and was impressed with the overall shape of the car, and the dash screens really caught my eye. If Hyundai can do away with the "dealership games" that have made buying a car on the second worst experience to a root canal, they can really make hay here. So far the EVs that I've had from traditional manufactures have all been tainted from the sales, and service that we all have come to dislike about them.

The rear seat can recline one more level, did you notice that the trunk cover has 2 positions? If you put it in the rear position, the rear seat can recline more.

I’m a huge Tesla Fan and love what they have done for the industry… but the styling of the Y just couldn’t sway me and now with massive price increases (due to more demand than supply) and competitive options like this Ionic 5, it is much harder to go for Tesla. Instead I would go with the Ionic 5 and would buy Telsa stock with the money saved. The Ionic styling, build quality, features (heads up, user interfaces, V2L) and positive reviews really help the decision.
The Tesla is actually much cheaper, so buy the Model Y and Tesla stock with the money left over from not buying the Hyundai.

It seems that Tesla defaulting the selection of the $2000 20" wheel option is confusing a lot of journalists, whose research abilities could be one upped by a third grader. Ioniq 5 Limited starts at $54,500 without destination, but is eligible for the $7500 tax credit, bringing the price down to $47,000.
Plus $5000 or more in dealership markups.
@@JAM_2024 if you decide to pay of it - you can always walk away from any dealer markup. also decline everything that they offer as an add-on, no matter how much they push for it. Perhaps keep GAP insurance - because the value of the car drops the second it leaves the lot. Small investment to protect the investment into a vehicle.

I absolutely love the look of the Ioniq 5. If I wasn't a broke college student, it would be my next car. I really hope they keep the boxy styling in future models of the ioniq 5. I currently own an older Hyundai Santa Fe and every hyundai that I've driven has been a more comfortable drive than driving a toyota or honda. Hyundais at the top for me right now.
Coming from a Honda Odyssey van, which sits higher up and has the flat floor, I really like that feature. On road trips we put a flat bottom bag or container in the middle to hold drinks and snacks and it’s just pleasant and easy. I really like that about the Hyundai.
I'd take the Ioniq 5 over the Tesla and it's not even close for me. The only reason I'd go with Tesla is due to their charging network, other than that it's Ioniq 5 all day everyday. If Hyundai can catch up even just a little with their own charging network, for me Tesla would be in the rearview mirror, hell not even, they wouldn't be visible to me at all.

But for a $20,000 price difference and an additional $10,000 for the Autopilot, the Tesla falls short on value and important features like cooled seats, heads-up display, reclining back seats, the cool roof
and many more.
The Ioniq 5 may be slower by a few seconds on 0-60mph. But what's the ruch? All the other features make you want to spend a few additional seconds in the car.
Got a bit over 1'000 miles in our Ioniq 5.
Biggest drawbacks:
- No rear wiper (idiotic decision)
- lane keep assist
- prehistoric nav system (which makes the HUDs AR functions pretty useless)
- BIG winter range penalty
Plus points:
- gorgeous design
- great ride
- good power
- lots of smart features
- driving it just makes me happy
Never seriously considered a Tesla (too many dealbreakers for me)
Never underestimate the importance of a few quick buttons as opposed to having swipe a darn screen just to lower the ac or radio. Its not only a convenience but also a safety issue.

Comparing the ride quality of a Performance Model Y to an Ioniq 5 is hardly apples to apples.
Aye and so does the build quality.
The Model Y LR is a much more accurate comparison.
MY LR has softer suspension which makes ride quality better, it’s much quieter regarding road noise, and it sits an inch higher off the ground.
Can buy the acceleration boost upgrade to make it almost as fast as the MY P.
Doesn't change the fact that with the tax credit you're talking roughly about 14k difference and there are things that you just don't get in the Tesla. Yes the Tesla is faster in the 1/4 but seriously, how many people will ever drag race them?
@@RDRUclips54 I bought my Tesla because first off they have been making EV’s the longest and when you drive one you can tell it’s a much smoother ride, especially with the regenerative brakes.
Second Tesla has by far the biggest and best supercharging network, so I never have to worry about range on a long trip.
Third, Tesla is the only company that has a giant screen in the middle that I can stream Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, etc.
I use that feature all the time. One time I went camping and my Tesla was the only thing that got any service so everyone wasn’t able to use their phone but I still got to camp in AC with my Netflix.
Even though my Verizon phone didn’t even have service.
Tesla is the only company that will send a service guy to my house for service, they will do service in my garage.
There’s so many reasons to go Tesla I could go on forever, I trust Tesla battery packs not to spontaneously combust and I can’t say that about their competitors like Kia/Hyundai.
Also my car is only a year old, I bought it for 55k and I could sell it for 70k right now if I wanted to.
Unfortunately I don’t want to sell my car.
Also the tax credit you mentioned is honestly BS because Tesla actually gives set in stone pricing, which means you’re not paying more or less than MSRP.
If you try to buy any other brand EV right now they are all charging $5,000 or more above MSRP sticker price.
So those savings you mentioned don’t exist. 😂

As far as service goes I don't know where you live but I've heard many people complain about service from their Tesla dealership. Not to mention, if you only had your car a year then what was the service guy doing at your house? As far as pricing goes I don't know what you got for 55k but everything I price is well over 60k, plus there are dealerships that don't charge over sticker,, you just have to find them. You are correct on one thing, Tesla has definitely been doing it the longest. And they are the most expensive, so with those 2 you would think you wouldn't have any build quality problems and you damn sure shouldn't be hearing any rattling noises. As far as charging goes, you're right. Tesla has to have the biggest network. As far as you're not having signal story goes, I'm sorry I don't believe it. How can your cell phone not have service but somehow the Tesla does? I highly doubt Tesla has a bigger network than a cell phone company.

I have a Model Y and an Ioniq 5 on order. Model Y is much more expensive, but it might fit our lifestyle more. I really enjoyed the way the Ioniq 5 drove - supple, comfortable, but it's not as practical as I was hoping it would be (although the price difference between the two can buy a lot of roof boxes and bike racks). Still a tough decision ahead.
I really wish Edmunds had been able to find a new Model Y long range to compare.
I think build quality and reliability will prove the 5 superior to the Y over the long run.
Ioniq 5 is same or more than the Model Y in both the SEL and Limited AWD trims. They are adding at a minimum 5k adjustment. Just test drove both today and definitely liked the Y over the Ioniq 5. Range and Charging Infrastructure is better with Tesla until Electrify America catches up (another 3-5 years probably). Build quality definitely better in the ioniq 5 but when i test drove the y today it wasn't a huge drop off as it was in the past.
The price difference in Norway amounts to Model Y being about 3400 dollars more. But the Ioniq has a worse infortainment system than my 2015 Golf, a lot worse than the 2016 Passat GTE. The map is the worst I have seen in the last 15 years. My father sold used cars, so I have seen a lot of the different maps that have been since they first started to appear in cars.
You cannot use the map to navigate for long trips, as you can with the Tesla and VW. Even with a 80 percent charge, and a drive that is 600 km, it tells you to charge right away. It doesn't plan ahead. You also cannot navigate the map in any meaningful way.
You cannot place the map in front of you, and the headup display isn't visible with my sunglasses on. The headup was also much better on the ID4.
It doesn't remember regen (accident waiting to happen, if you one day don't remember to put it into I-pedal) and the speedometer is behind the wheel. I had to move my whole upper body to see the screen. Compared to the ID4, which is right there, or the Tesla which you have to adjust your eyes slightly to the side. No body movement at all with those cars.
I would say it felt like you got 15 000 dollars more car with the Model Y. When a ID4 with few "add-ons" costs 5700 dollars less than the Ioniq, it also is hard to justify.
It is espeically hard to justify the car, since the screen is at least 6 years outdated and the map at least 12 years....

And you do not get buttons for the things you use the most manually, at a service location, adding and removing stuff from the dash.
Also, Hyundai doesn't have thwt great a track record with those updates. This is not their first ev you know

I forgot to mention I love the movable console as I work from the car and moving the console all the way to the front gives me a resting spot for my laptop, when not working I move I leave it in the same position so my dog can easily get in and out of the back and it works great! The Fruck works great for my level 2 charger, that way I do not need to unload the car when I am road tripping and staying at hotels or relatives.
I can't believe I prefer the Ioniq 5. It honestly seems like a better car based on this comparison. It seems like a good first EV...like not thrusting you into the smartphone car culture like Tesla has done. Instead, it's like they are keeping a lot of stuff many of us like in our gasoline cars... physical buttons on the dash etc. Just seems better. Now that I think about it, I think the only drawback is chargers.
I'm willing to bet In about 5 years, Tesla will not be on top of the EV game. Especially if electrify America steps their game up which I think they will.

I'll take that bet :) Yes, Tesla will have competition but no other company will be able to mass produce EV's as efficiently and as cheaply as Tesla. Their corporate structure and ingenuity will keep them at least 5 years ahead of everyone else!
You are buying a Tesla for tech, super car performance, autopilot, minimalism, range, network imo. That isn't important to many people. Lots of choices EV and ICE if not.

I've had my Ioniq5 for app 8monhs and i absoloutly love it, i've driven (not owned) mustang, Tesla S/Y/3 and VW and i would still pick the IQ5 over any of those.

Agreed. Hyundai is hugely more experienced in making cars, and their quality standards are light years beyond Tesla. Not so long ago, Tesla was making cars in the *parking* *lot* , under tents. Tesla factory workers are also not well-compensated union workers.
What a great review. I drove a 2020 Tesla Model Y which I got rid of after too much phantom braking that became dangerous (I know I was in the minority experiencing that much). I purchased an Ioniq 5 Limited AWD like this one. Overall I’ve been happier with it. I do miss the way the Model Y takes corners, and how tight it’s steering is (the Ioniq’s is tight only in Sports mode). I miss the OTA updates. But I don’t miss anything else. Btw, that space in front of the console is where my daughter puts her school backpack on the way to school, or where I put my work backpack on the way to a meeting. The sliding console is really useful when you’re using that luxury front seat feature leaning it all the way back while waiting for charging or for someone at an appointment. Moving the console back gives you access to things on it while lying down.
Finally, I too find the Hyundai’s HDA2 better than Autopilot. It is far less aggressive in it’s moves and it never, and I mean never, phantom brakes. That alone is a breath of fresh air.
How is charging on road trips for you? Tesla wins with its network but that's the only reason holding me back from switching from Tesla.
I also own a 2020 Model Y. Phantom braking and rattling noises are real. I also don't like the fact that I don't get AM radio which was not mentioned in this video. I'm very skeptical about full self-driving becoming a practical reality for Tesla (and maybe for anybody) within my lifetime. I love being able to avoid gas stations and the convenience of the supercharger network, but Tesla has left the door open for EV competitors.

Teslas are fantastic cars - in my opinion they are the best cars on the road. You are welcome to disagree and buy something else. But Tesla raised the bar pretty high for what's expected in a car today, so whether or not you buy a Tesla, the car you end up with is probably going to be pretty good, and you can thank Elon for lighting a fire under the car industry's ass for that.

I really want a company like Hyundai to become the better choice so I don't need to support Musk anymore, but that time hasn't come quite yet (getting close though). There is a lot to like about the Ioniq 5 and 6, some things definitely better than Tesla, but Tesla's efficiency, charging network, software, and tax rebates till put it ahead for now.
Both vehicles offer unique and innovative features. Hyundai's V2V/V2L is fantastic, turning the car into a mini-generator. Tesla's software, with their Toybox, Arcade, and Theater, not to mention endless OTA updates, are a lot of fun. I think, as with any major purchase, it will depend on what's most important to you. Tesla's Supercharger network, and how it's integrated into the car's navigation and battery management systems, is the best if you frequently do road trips. The non-Tesla charging network is still playing catch up. But if that's not important to you, the Hyundai's vented seats, more traditional interior, and overall design may work better. So, do your research. Figure out what car works best for you. Personally, I don't think these two compete due to the huge price difference. $60k for an MY LR puts the Tesla in another price bracket. I think the Hyundai competes more directly with something like the VW ID.4 and others that with pricing closer to $45-55k. I do agree that there are now a lot more EV choices. Competition is always a good thing.
V2L is a GREAT way do Shorten your battery life.

Affordable is a subjective term. The fact that I was able to buy one makes it affordable to me because I'm not rich at all. Without incentives, the Ioniqs aren't exactly cheap either. The price is a fluid thing because of the insane demand. If they were 30-35k, people would have to be on 2+ year waitlists.

As an owner of an Ioniq 5, I must unfortunately confirm that there are some issues with build quality here as well as some other software and tech issues. Hyundai are working on that, but I don't buy that whole "Tesla build quality is crap" narrative.

I think it was a pretty fair review, but as you said, your Model Y is over a year old and Tesla has continued to improve their fit and trim as well as other improvements, but I cannot disagree with you on that. My pick would be the Tesla Model Y. On an SUV style car, space is paramount. That extra space under the rear can hold all your car stuff, which makes most cars look junky. Also (as you said) the Tesla Supercharging networks make the Model Y a car you can take cross-country trips in. I think that would not be a fun trip in the Ioniq. And the OTA updates really put the Y over the top!

$50k+dealer markup for less mileage, less storage, fewer charging options, and no OTA updates...Ioniq 5 what a deal.
After hours of comparison videos and deep dives into the Inoiq 5, I finally test-drove the SEL trim and was very impressed, although the matte gunmetal gray was not my thing and I would like the Premium trim with the longer range. It definitely does look and feel larger than I thought it would, and the interior was nicely laid out. I wasn't crazy about the two horizontal touch screens at first - they were so stark and white - and the driver's panel was a little weird - at first. I actually like the night setting and would consider using it during the day as well because the white screens are bland looking in my opinion. Considering I had never experienced the controls before, everything was fairly intuitive. I am not crazy about having to rely on both the touch screen and the buttons beneath it to control the fan, etc, but perhaps there is a way to just use one or the other. Also, as I was driving, I reached over to turn the volume knob and my hand grazed the "Warmer" setting of the temp control. I didn't realize anything had happened until it started to get very warm and I looked over to see that the temp had increased quite a bit (It was 100 degrees outside). The location of the shift changer took a little getting used to, but it will grow on me. The back seating area is HUGE! My husband is 6'4" and had a LOT of head and leg room available. I'm tall as well, and not getting any younger, so having the seat height higher makes it much easier (and more graceful in a dress) to get in and out of compared to my Clubman. I was bummed that USB-C charging ports aren't yet available - why not put one of each side by side? I'm in Houston, so I am not as concerned about not having a rear wiper, but it does rain torrentially at times, so having one on my Mini Clubman is indeed helpful. My only other experience with an EV was in the Polestar 2 during my trip home to WA state. I LOVED that car but did have my stomach in knots on my first leg because I couldn't stop worrying that I would run out of power since I was driving over the Cascade mountain range. It was stressful even though the car was displaying my range and how many miles remaining upon arrival. Once I got over that first trip and the hurdle of finding a charging station that wasn't being used already, I knew an EV was for me. As I mentioned, I'm in Houston, and although one would think charging stations are few and far between, that's not the case and I can envision going to San Antonio, Waco, or Austin easily, as well as a trip to Dallas with only a quick charge needed. Oh and regarding Ryan's comment about not being sure about the moving console - well, since he probably doesn't carry a purse or bag, it may not seem important, but I am always having to deal with my purse and put it on my floorboard on the passenger side or on the seat, and having it on the floor within easy reach in the Ioniq 5 is definitely a plus. I am a huge car buff and the trim and interior features are important to me, so to make sure the Ioniq 5 is for me, I'm going to test-drive a couple other makes/models - the Genesis GV60, Mustang Mach-E, the Nissan Ariya (I sat in one while in WA - the Nissan guys let me charge my Polestar rental and they had a couple Ariyas there) - and, this may be crazy - the Fisker Ocean (the One trim is my preference). The only thing bothering me about Fisker is the brand has gone bankrupt before and even in the 4th largest city in the country, finding a dealer may be tough. I'll be checking out Edmunds reviews on these makes/models. Wish me luck - I'll be in an EV SUV in 2024 (or before if a cool '24 comes out before January).
Woman will love the space on the center floor. My wife removed the plastic center storage on her minivan so she had somewhere to put her bag. Apple Carplay and that HUD are huge pluses over the Model Y. Those exterior colors are sick. Look like custom aftermarket paint jobs. Impressed with Ioniq 5.
One thing you guys left out about the importance of the Hyundai. Dealerships. Yeah they suck but if you have a problem you have somewhere to go. And chances are they won't go "hmm idk give us 2 months to figure out the problem"
That's an issue up here in Canada, there's not many Tesla dealerships outside of the major cities.

The Performance wheels and tires on the Teslas really lower the range. ID4 and Ionic5 were not on the market when I got my Model 3. I would’ve seriously considered both of them had they been although the supercharger network may still sway me to Tesla. In the meantime, I’d gotten used to the Tesla’s controls and they do have shortcuts on the stalk/steering wheel for the important stuff. Build quality, although much improved in my 2021 still pales compared to Hyundai and VW.

I like that the Ioniq5 comes standard with lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and HDA 1. I think they are the most convenient features to have for freeway commutes and long road trips.
I really dislike that the only way to have similar features on a Tesla is by paying $10k for Full Self Driving. I know FSD has more features available, but I don’t necessarily need all of them.
I have a Palisade I’m assuming the system is the same and as in the Ioniq. The Hyundai tends to drift more and after a lane change you hold it there and watch the lines to know you’re locked in. With the Tesla it’s a more deliberate maneuver and it feels safer it’s more obvious when it’s engaged with Hyundai you really have to watch the lane monitor to make sure you’re in lane keeping mode.

You missed the fact that you can ask the Tesla to turn on wipers/heat/radio /AC /adjust fans etc etc. so many verbal commands mean you don’t have to look at the screen which is a much more safer drive.

@@amahdi just by pressing the button on the right side of the steering wheel and talk to the car. You can tell it to turn up / down the heat.. or just press and say “it’s too cold in here” many UTube videos about Teslas different voice commands. It’s not just a car but also a computer. That’s why you can’t compare other cars with Tesla.
The four dots on the steering wheel represent the letter "H" in Morse code. Been hearing stories about $4K-$10K dealer markups for the Ioniq 5 and a $400 dollar charge for a white paint-job.
I think the build quality in the Ioniq is due to Hyundai being a car company and not a tech company like Tesla. The noise and spoty fit is something I've heard alot about in the Tesla range. There are a number of new EVs out now and more coming in the next couple years. Tesla will need to step up their game. Big performance numbers are a neat trick but its in the everyday driving experience that a car needs to shine.

Totally agree. You hit it right on the nail. If Tesla does not ante up their quality control, it will never be main stream manufacturer. Tech without reliability can only get you so far.
Build quality is the toughest thing to control. That's why all the big manufacturers spend so much time on it. It's easy to slap a car together. To make it ride right, not make noises, and have good panel gaps, is very expensive and time consuming. Tesla will struggle for a long time in this area because their fan base consistently claims it doesn't exist or doesn't matter.
If Tesla and Toyota together put a product together using and playing up each company’s strengths, then I would consider buying a Tesla. Given so many complaints about the fit and finish, it’s very hard to make a purchase on a current Tesla vehicles. I am frankly surprised why so many people are buying them. Is it a luxury item that gives off sense of “I am a baller”?
As an OWNER of a 2021 Model Y, I gotta say, the Model Y doesn’t make much sense now at its current price point.
When I purchased my Model Y last year, it was $48,000. I added third row seats, white interior, and a tow hitch. All in, it was about $52,000. I skipped the harsh riding 21” wheels and thus, I feel like I purchased the perfect car at the perfect time. However the Model Y now cost nearly $8,000 more to start, and I’m sorry, that’s just too much. It’s a BRILLIANT car, but price will kill anything.
It’s still does. There is no other 7seat option on the market. Maybe GLB later on. But Model Y will still win with its practicality.

EPA estimated rage is from when it stops charging to when it won’t move any more. Did you test that, or just to when the remaining range reads 0? Tesla leaves a large below-zero reserve, I have seen, so that fewer people will strand themselves…
I thought you were not supposed to drive your battery to zero percent or continually charge it to 100% (except for the LiFePO4 chemistry) This means that the real usable range is drastically reduced. Also battery degradation is more pronounced when pushing your battery to 100% then to 0. Tesla does not recommend doing this...
Honestly, with the column shifter and moving console, I wish the Ioniq 5 had an option for a front bench seat. It’d make the car even more practical since you could seat up to 6 people.

The N version of the Ioniq5 will be arriving in the not too distant future. Another performance test against the Tesla Y Performance would be warranted.
BTW, I've driven both and think that Tesla's middle of the car console is just bizarre. Why they don't have at least a heads up display is beyond me and makes me wonder how that is safe. Hyundai have, it appears, made a concerted effort to be at the forefront of electrified vehicles. With their sister EVs from Kia and Genesis, they are the early favourites with more models such as the Ioniq 6 also due out soon.
I'm a huge Tesla fanboy, own a Model 3, and have a Performance Y coming soon. That being said, anyone who prefers the Ioniq 5 has every right to. I love the look and the materials. I do think Tesla continues to improve their fit and finish, but to say they have always been up to legacy automaker standards would be a lie (in the comparable price brackets, of course). At the end of the day, there's a lid for every pot, if you can find a lid these days. If a buddy of mine got an Ioniq 5, I'd be thrilled for them.

The Tesla would be my choice IF it was the same price as the Ioniq 5 AWD, but it's not even close, in Canada it's $77K for Model Y, and $55K for Ioniq 5 AWD. $22K is a large difference that would sway me to the Ioniq 5.
RWD long range preferred is even cheaper $51999. That is almost 10k less than ME base model which is also RWD
The moving console is excellent. It means that when my partner is driving, her purse is not under my feet when we're driving! I think this is GENIUS
I bought the Ioniq 5, just seems a better car to me, the advantages the Model Y has, better efficiency, more boot space and more advanced lane keeping, doesn't justify the huge jump in price, everywhere else, the Ioniq 5 wins. Of course, other people's opinions will differ.
The charging network of Tesla does justify a lot, especially in the US
How much did i get it from the dealer??? If it not close to the MSRP u are getting ...then it might be closer to a model Y...if thats the case a Model Y seems like a better choice
Charging network, OTA updates giving your car new features and improvements over times, model Y is also way more sporty, and better for winter climates due to its incredible 4WD system
@@howtorawk i disagree on that... i have model y and its body roll is very significant and 4WD system you don't need much as we also have model 3 RWD and I live in north and we have found it to be having no issues in snow... but that wont diminish some inherit issues which we have with our both cars and that's also coming at a higher price point than ioniq 5... everyone can have justifications for their choice like iPhone and android lovers and haters but one has to accept what is good and bad in one or the other to get future improvements
@@rkan2 i live in the UK, so cant comment on that, but here st least, i can get anywhere in the UK without the need for Tesla chargers. Of course, its a much smaller country

Excellent review, except for the distracted driving. You mentioned Hyundai's superior build quality twice. Hint, Hint....now let's talk reliability. The Kona EV has excellent reliability, and hopefully the 5 will have same genes. Tesla, however, ranks 28th of 29 mfgs. for reliability, and near the bottom of the barrel in JD Power surveys. It's no longer a bargain, but I guess we'll never see Elon's "everyman's" car. The lack of a screen in front of the driver, or a head's up display, is a mortal sin of the Model Y and 3. I think the EV6 will also kick Tesla's ass. I don't see the superchargers as a major asset, since 90% of charging is done at home, overnight. I'd like to see a shootout between the Mach-e and the EV6. Forget about the Model Y.
Should be noted, the 3 and Y are the most reliable of the Tesla's in the lineup. X is bringing down their reliability score.
Tesla still has the advantage in efficiency. Nobody can match their MPGe while offering the same performance.
And Hyundai is rumored to release an Ioniq 5 N performance series too.
@@mrbendel Read the reliability ratings from CR. The Model Y is their worst performing vehicle for reliability! So the Y is an even bigger dog than the X. And yes, the Teslas lead the pack in efficiency. But they don't seem to get close to their maximum range figures across the board.

Autopilot is a primitive joke, totally NOT able to fully understand the road conditions under computer control.
The Model Y long range is now $50,000. With the excellent Tesla Supercharging network, and the awful CCS charging infrastructure, this is a no-brainer.
Plus you get the 7500 tax credit where no tax credit for ioniq 5.
The moving console is useful when you put the seats in lounge mode(you need to move it back to put your hand on it), you can also use it to get out on the other side(which I used a couple of times) and then move it back forward when you are staying in the driving position.

I’ve driven both, and based on that alone, easily the Model Y. But you can’t compare any Ev to Teslas for 1 reason, and 1 reason only: Super Chargers. You can laugh at anyone that tells you that Tesla is “just a car company” because it’s not. No Ev will ever hold up to Tesla until they can build the same level of fast charging infrastructure that Tesla has.
Great review and comparison! Reinforces all the reasons why I ended up pre-ordering an Ionic 5 last week. Even though I really wanted a Tesla (3 or Y), but couldn't look past its only shortcoming and that is build quality. When you're paying premium prices, there's no acceptance for not premium build quality.
The flat floor in the front is great for us taller drivers who always deal with our right leg hitting and rubbing up against center consoles
I test drive a Model Y today, and I think people really give it too much praise. The steering (albeit can be changed) felt very stiff, the regenerative braking is harsh and the interior materials didn't look up to par for the price. The 0-60 is the best about it, but everything was just...Meh

There are parking spots so tight exiting the vehicle on the opposite side makes the most sense. Also, what if you are suited up downtown in the rain - the road wash from a truck as you make your exit will make you as dish grey as the Queen. The sliding console is dope.
I have a 2021 model 3. I use voice commands very frequently such as for navigation, climate control, wipers and music. The response is excellent in the model 3.How does the Ioniq5 compare?
I have the same. Not a fanboy and I really love all vehicles, EV’s etc…test drive some other EV’s to compare and while as nice as they were, none of them could beat the driving experience of the model 3. The Volkswagen id4 is a really nice vehicle. Build quality was exceptional and ride comfort was fantastic. The UI though was absolutely awful and the driving experience was beyond boring. I honestly went back early and cut the test drive short because it was that bad to me. As far as consumer EV’s go, it seems Tesla is the only one not afraid to give the public actual performance instead of watering it down. Even the sr+ is nothing to sneeze at and will instantly haul butt at the press of a foot. Not sure why other regular manufacturers (not Porsche and other high end EV’s) seem so afraid to give people some performance feedback in the driving experience. Even the charge amount, Tesla gives you more to work with (advising daily charging up to 90% and 100% with LFP batteries) where the other brands say they have a huge range, but only suggest you to charge 80% max. One vehicle I will say that is really nice for the price and what you see is what you get is the Kia Niro EV.
I have owned an Ioniq 5 for two months now. Smoothest riding, quietest car I have ever owned including several luxury brands (Lexus, BMW, Mercedes). I test drove a Tesla. The speed is great fun, buit not practical or necessary for every day use. Nor do I miss the rattles, noise and spartan interior.
You can beat the brand value & stock market.
But you can never match the build quality & experience of making a car of a company which have been making cars for several decades....
NIO and Xpeng are making cars with comparable or better build quality than the Japanese. Tesla just skimps on quality. That's a company culture, not a tech expertise. Musk is the reason these cars still come out like crap.
Tesla is nearly 20 years old.

@@illegalmachine I agree, where I live in the bay area, I believe that Chargepoint for level 2 charging and EVGO for DC Fast charging are more popular than EA.
@@illegalmachine Here's your first then. I've driven over 20K miles in the last 10 months including at 8 long distance trips that required me to use DC fast charging and my primary source was EA. I've had very few issues and none that caused any significant delay to my trip. My longest trip was over 5K miles. Is EA as good as the Tesla network? NO. But it's rapidly catching up. You might also want to check out Out of Spec reviews. Kyle does a lot of cross country driving and last I checked he owns the record for a canonball run in a Porsche Taycan across America that even beat the Tesla record. Finally, you might want to think about the fact that unless Tesla opens up it's Super Charging network to non-Teslas, they will have the legacy network. They are rapidly becoming the BetaMax of the EV world.
@@ultratodd The other person who replied disagrees with you. Tesla is constantly expanding and upgrading the SC network. Unlike the broken and vandalized public chargers I see and read about.
Jonny Lieberman for MT had a Taycan GTS a couple weeks ago and had to go to 4 different EA chargers to find one that worked. And it took a phone call to customer service to get the car charged. But TESLA is betamax? The system tied to my phone, that my car automatically knows to direct me, that automatically charges me when I plug my car in without installing or fumbling through a dozen apps and logins? 😂
@@MalamIbnMalam Yup. no comparison to the Tesla SC network that's integrated into your car. One app that controls your car and is tied to the SC network. Just pull up and plug in and play Sonic the Hedgehog.
We have a model 3 dual motor which is very similar to the Y. We drove about an hour to test drive the Ionic 5. The ionic 5 is much quieter for sure so I know what the guy is talking about. We've had the model 3 for almost 3 years now and we were very impressed with the Ionic 5. At the end, we were both convinced the Ionic 5 is a better car and we ordered one even though I have an order in for a model Y. There goes my $250 deposit but oh well. The Tesla still has the cool factor, but that's becoming less so, and the supercharging thing is a big plus. I would say the only reason to get a Tesla over the Ionic is the superchargers. Although the charging thing is temporary, hopefully. We'll save about $10K and the warranty is 5yrs 60K miles on the Hyundai.
