I’ve had my model y for a year and a half and absolutely love it. The big thing I try to remind people is that it’s not a luxury car. It’s an expensive techy electric car. I find that too many people think they were buying this to compete with their older BMW or Lexus and there really is no competition in terms of trim and true luxury. But to be able to wake up in the morning and have a fully charged car that drives me to work, is unbelievable.

I have had 23 cars in my life....I am 62 yo. The model Y I had new from 2021 thru 2023 was by FAR the best car I've ever owned. I have a 2023 MB EQS 450+ that's pretty close to the Y but it costs twice as much. I just wanted a bit more ride luxury.

Prices have come down even more. I just ordered a '24 Model Y Long Range, white interior, stealth grey exterior for $41.5K. The $7500 tax credit was taken off the price when I ordered it.
I bought a Nissan Leaf back in 2011 (now going on 12 years) because I only wanted a car for short trips (long trips I ride my Harley). This car was great for me. Total maintenance cost over 12 years is around $1600 (three accessory batteries, 4 key fob batteries, flat tire, and recently one motor coolant pump). When I bought the car it cost around $36.5k but thanks to all the subsidies out the door cost me $25k and I got a free level 2 charger in my home for being one of the first to jump on production EVs. At present I get around 65 miles of range out of the original 105 miles (which is plenty for my use) and the battery (still original) still indicates that it fully charges (no bad cells). I have babied the battery by never leaving it fully charged for long periods of time and I usually keep it charged around 50% if not being used for a week or two and the car was garaged. If they make it to production my next EV will be an Aptera (what an EV really should be that puts Tesla to shame efficiency-wise).
One additional comment is that at present our power grid can't support EVs if they gain a majority of the market and recently automakers are now starting to drop EV support due to them not selling well. In fact even at Tesla's fast charging stations you cannot fast charge more than three EVs concurrently because of the limitations of what it can pull from the power grid. Aptera is the only EV that doesn't require a huge battery for long range and gives you free miles with solar charging because it is so efficient (between 2-3x more efficient than Teslas).
I’ve been an auto tech for 22 years. Electric cars are a fascination for me, and I’m not at all opposed to them. A good customer of mine bought a Model Y, and I am impressed by many aspects of the car. One disappointment: he has had to have the hvac compressor and octovalve replaced *three times* in 15,000 miles. Under warranty, yes, but the first time around took just shy of a month, though they gave him a loaner. Second time took two weeks, only got a loaner for 4 days. Third time, 12 days, no loaner. Apparently the service center he is directed to (in a very large metro area) has been getting busier and busier with similar repairs. Considering that we live in a “cold winter” region, hvac is damn important…and as he found out, since that system is also responsible for the temp regulation of the battery & drive components, every time it failed, it wouldn’t allow him to drive more than a mile or so (the third time it wouldn’t allow him to drive at all). Being that it’s such a critical system, a failure every 5k miles average is very concerning. The last time around, the service center guys told him that it was a $7700 repair if paying cash. So he is intending to sell it before the warranty expires and plans to look into a Rivian, I think is what he said.
I just took ownership of my new Tesla Model Y Performance as well as transferred the FSD from my Model 3 to this. After tax credit and incentives, the car was... 42,500 plus 10k free supercharging miles.
Great review. Have a Model 3 performance and I love It. I will say that having the Level 2 charger at the crib is a game changer, I couldn’t stomach not having a charger at home to plug in every night. I was on super chargers for 2 months before I got the charger installed at home, It wasn’t the best, and was a time drain to find chargers and plan trips around my range.
Do you guys just plug it in when you get home and let the schedule take care of the rest? I'm installing mine this week and I have no idea how to approach my behavior as far as charging the car every day. Thanks!
@@ToroMateo yep, I usually plug It in at night and have It programmed to charge before I leave for work. You can also arrange charging only during certain hours. I live in Georgia and over the summer we have what’s called “super off peak hours,” which is a heavily discounted rate from like 12-4am. Charging at home or at work is a game changer.
Great review. Appreciated honest comments. One way to overcome the problem of menu searching for a feature (e.g., why does the glove box NOT have a manual switch) is to use the audio command feature: “Open glove box” or “engage front window defroster” instead of searching thru two submenus for the particular feature while driving down a busy street. Winter frost problem was good mention.
All of you should deep thinking...IT'S REAL TRUE!! *Tesla Model 3 Total Cost After 10 Years =20k for Battery/10years + $ Suppercharged/Home (+) SERVICES/Maintainance = TOO MUCH?? *Hond/Toy 2024 Total Cost After 10 Years = 0,636k for 02-Battery/10years + $ Gas (+) SERVICES/Maintainance = VERY CHEAP!! Why... ??
@@Techninjaspeaks dual motor model Y requires transmission fluid and filter changes both motors have filters also and sorry rav4 is cheaper to operate it doesnt eat through tires like model y and tires are cheaper and the insurance is cheaper also.
Thank you, Kevin, for a concise breakdown on the Model Y. And you are right, viewing your video now, there has been a slight change in the pricing. One item not addressed, I did not see you address is the cost to insure this vehicle. I would say bumper to bumper coverage? Just to add: for such an expensive vehicle, I believe a tesla should have, few added features; Ambient lighting, power sliding sunshade for roof, side mirror turn signals, as standard for such an expensive tech car, not to mention better audio quality. Needs improvement.
When you said "If you don't like Tesla, don't drive this car..." I literally laughed out loud because that's exactly what happened to me!! I went from "Tesla is a toy car and not worth the inflated prices, to I'm buying a Model Y next year even if I have to go broke doing it" in a NY minute!!! The Model Y, I feel, is a car designed for people who like to drive and I am a driver by nature. Honestly, the "one-pedal" feature Tesla has sold me on it within the first 5 miles of my commute home. That's worth its weight in gold!!!! It'll cost me at least 55k and it'll be worth every single penny.
My issues with my four year ownership of a Model 3 Extended Range: 1) The range was WAY overstated! Cross country driving was horrible! 2) Still not enough charging stations. 3) Not enough repair centers - not much went wrong with the car, but it was an hour drive each way to the service center! 4) Good luck ever getting a service rep or anyone from Tesla on the phone. 4) I never liked the limited number of color choices. 5) It was far too easy to damage your rims on curbs! 6) Full Self Driving was over promised! 5) The delivery experience was horrendous! OK - that's me being nitpicky, since their were quite a few things that I loved and miss about the car! 1) It was well built! 2) I loved the acceleration! 3) Most of the tech features were amazing! 4) Safety - I got rear ended and got little damage! 5) It was extremely comfortable with quite a bit of leg room for rear passengers! 6) Great for local/city driving! 7) Economical when using a home charger! 8) Not having to stop at filthy and often dangerous gas stations! Would I ever buy another one? Maybe? And, it would definitely be a Tesla! But for local driving only! Environmental questions? 1) Lithium mining 2) Battery disposal 3) Over taxing the electrical power grid!
How well does that work though, cause there's generally 1 or 2 times a year our doors get frozen shut here with just a normal car that requires quite a lot of force pulling on the handle to get it open.
My Dodge Durango cost me $800 and it gets about 400 miles of range even after driving it for four years. I never worry about honking the horn remotely, because nobody would ever want to steal it.
My wife had a deposit for a Rivian R1S but after talking to her about Tesla's charging network, how bad Electrify America is and that you can get a Model Y for under $50k, it doesn't really make sense to consider anything but a Tesla.
This year alone i went from a 2013 Chrysler 300, to a 2017 BMW i3 REx, to a 2023 Hyundai ioniq 5, to a 2023 Tesla Model 3.. no complaints, i very much like my Model 3
Over here in the UK, if we so much as hold our cell phone while driving and get caught doing so, there will be a fine to pay and yet most EV's basically have an iPad attached to the dash.
I would certainly replace the $10 outlet you are using to charge at your house. That cheap outlet is fine for intermittent use ( like a dryer or stove) but there have been numerous cases of those melting and even causing fires when used for continuous use like charging your car. The good version of that outlet costs $50 to $60
Thanks for the review. In regards to panel gapping, my buddy works full-time in wrapping cars with 3M vinyl. He says that Tesla's are the worst put together vehicles he has ever seen. Keep that in mind if you think about putting so much money into a car which body falls apart like Legos.
I have a big warning for the tesla wall connector. When / if the handle brake, you need to buy a brand new wall connector. I recommend to buy a normal EV connector instead
The headlights of those cars are focused too high, blinding the car in front or ahead of it. There should be a recall for those. Strange thing is, some of them are ok, but most are focused high.
How was your insurance experience? Been thinking about a tesla but one tbing i keep hearing is high insurance costs here in michigan and some problems with certain ins- Companies.
My brother pays 300$+ for M3P (Florida, Fort Myers). I don’t know exactly what mine costs (MYLR), but my husband said when he added it to our insurance it was a difference of +40$ (Milwaukee, Wisconsin-American Family Insurance). You just have to get quotes. I didn’t find a quote that was more than 175$/mth.
Awesome review!! I was shocked (kinda) of the limited range in cold. Watching this video while it's -40 outside tells me I have to wait a few more years.
Yeah Tesla is still ok now. But they had better address the quality and service issues as the competition is building from companies that offer better build quality, service and nicer interiors. Tesla is still enticing because of their charging infrastructure and tax incentives. But since they are opening up their charging to other brands, people are looking at other possible options. And if the tax incentives run out on Tesla or other manufacturers offer comparable incentives then Tesla will face more competition. Probably one of the reasons they lowered their prices.
And that is exactly why we NEED MORE competition in the space... Because competition drives progress and improvement. Tesla is light-years away in terms of progress and improvements than any other traditional brand but still have lots to learn and improve too so more competition is always good!
prices have dropped as you know, and now they have the refreshed model, which makes the older ones even more dated and unsellable. the phone situation is extremely weak esp. coming from a computer on wheels. the panel gaps alone are a deal breaker for me as a car guy. the lesson on any EV for now an moving forward is don't buy it unless you can afford to be annoyed and also have another back up car, or just lease it. the best option is to buy a hybrid vehicle for today.
Just an FYI before you buy a non Tesla vehicle. Search for Supercharger's for non-Tesla owners near you. Most of the chargers will be for Tesla only vehicles
I think the description of the heat pump was incorrect. The heat pump isn't about heating the car when it's plugged in (although doing so will increase range), it's about heating the car more efficiently by reclaiming byproduct heat generated by various other car systems, e.g., motor, electronics, outside air. The previous heaters would just run electricity though a resistive heater, which is way more energy-intensive. This is similar to using a heat pump for your home vs electric heaters.
I have the exact same car. 2023 Y performance. Love the car, but honestly won't buy another one based on the terrible customer service and delivery service. We took possession of ours, and did a due bill over chips in the paint on the front end even before we left the lot. The following day, Tesla called and said they would not replace the panels. We had to have the whole front end repainted. Worst experience yet with a manufacture. This is the first non-BMW we've owned. To be fair, I guess you get what you pay for and we won't be buying another one. Like you, i'll look at other manufactures. Great video!
Exactly why I didn’t buy one for my wife, I can’t stands it build quality. Bought here a 2024 Lexus NX350h instead, it was built in Japan and it is impeccable inside and out, as it should because it is a Lexus.
I had my fully loaded MYP for 2yrs.. 3 wks ago I traded it in for a fully loaded BMW iX M60 and I couldn’t be happier! Night and day difference! I also had a Model S before the MYP.
Bluetooth sounds whack, have you ever experienced the Phantom breaking or acceleration? I want to go Tesla but still deciding b/t Lexus Acura etc. in this price range. Maybe I wait until the 3 LY comes out?
Excellent review. We agree about the weird exterior door handles. We've owned a Y for one year and 18k miles. We charge in our driveway. Our state (Connecticut) will reimburse for a charger and its installation. Only things we don't like are the sunroof and lack of grab bars above the doors to help get in and out. For $100 we installed a Vion sunshade. Also the low profile tires are prone to sidewall slashing by curb stones. But, it's the best car we've had, we're both 76. Also agree that the practical range is less than Tesla claims .
Thanks for a "non fanboy" review of your Tesla. The only reasons I'm considering trading my much love VW ID.4 possibly a Model Y are the Tesla Superchargers. God bless,
I have this car, wife has S and I had model 3.. Telsa is a simple and fine car. The S is way above these two from every perspective as far as I am concerned. With that said they are fine for the price but don't think you are getting the quality finish of an M4 or an E class, you arent' but you are paying so much less you live with it and in the end like the cars.
I Tried Tesla and then i4 BMW a year ago and ended up ordering BMW instead with M package, adaptive suspension and all the M flares. Just a ride quality and built was miles away from Tesla. Now things to consider if you are traveling a lot is charging station throughout the country is far superior with Tesla, although EA is building more and catching up. Regardless built quality and ride is what deterred me from Tesla. I hope they sort that out.
Thanks for your video and review of the Model Y. I just purchased the 2023 Model Y long range. I also did a test drive that same day. Sould be getting the vehicle in a few weeks. I like all the features that come with the car. I got all standard features on the vehicle. Dark Silver metallic is the current standard instead of white. I got the 19 inch Gemini wheels/tires. Last I got the black seats, In all my other previous vehicles they were also black. The seat colors are what I am used to. Last, I just stayed with basic Auto Pilot - don't really need the other auto driving modes. I have a 220 volt line to also do my charging and that will be my main source of charging since I will just do around town and short single charge trips. I know while driving I will be using the "voice command control" for some functions so I don't have to be looking at the Center Screen. It will be a learning experience. You said your tried Super Cruise. Can Super Cruise do any marked roads or go through town like Tesla Auto Pilot can??? I heard Super Cruise will only do certain selective highways like Freeways, etc. As long as the roads are marked properly, Tesla Basic Auto Pilot will enable. I don't need the lane changing feature which now costs an added 6,000 dollars. FSD now costs 15,000 dollars. So my Electric car journey will begin soon. Take care.
"Ever since the Tesla Cybertruck was spotted charging, people suspected that Tesla's 4680 cells were as bad as they were on the Model Y. The first documented Cybertruck charging curve confirms this, showing that the Tesla Cybertruck spends a lot of time charging."
Truth after 2 year 6 month 4k for ac repair 300$ for high voltage wire 200$ for self broken side pannel interior driver side 530$ for trunk strut , once m done with tesla never buying ev again
Tesla's primary advantage is the charging network. The industry will catch up and Tesla will struggle. The competition finally figured out the magnitude of the Tesla charging advantage. They are now in pursuit. I charge at home and work so it doesn't matter to me, but a lot of EV owners and potential owners....public charging needs to take a big step up. It will.
I really like the way you review this car: very honest. With the price range of Tesla Y or below, what other EV cars you suggest to check out?. I’m looking for a new family car replace my older model Lexus RX350. The most selling point of Tesla is autopilot, I love the idea of roadtrip without worrying of drive very much (I’m not a good relaxed driver). But the quality tesla Y looks horrible. And I heard it is not comfort for backrow seat as suspension is not good comparing to other lux brand too.
Would you recommend getting the model 3 over the model y for someone who doesn’t have a family or was the space still helpful. It’s a 20k price difference in Canada since the y doesn’t qualify for the incentives
Can’t believe both our cars are over year old. Only thing I’ve spent on it was tire rotation about 60 bucks. I live in a condo so super charging came out to a little over 1,200 dollars for the year, if it wasn’t for the Miami to New York and back trip I would’ve been around 700-800 spent.
I live in a condo too and getting a Model Y this month. Would you spend less if you used Level 2 chargers? My employer has one @ about $1.35/hr and that's mostly where I'll be charging it.
WE HAVE A 2016 LEXUS NX 200T, ALL THE PANEL GAPS ARE JUST PERFECT, THEY MEASURE THEM AT THE FACTORY IN JAPAN, these cars would never get out of the factory ,they would fail. if you can't pass very hard tests with blindfolds on you don't work at the lexus factory, Japan=QUALITY.
Kevin, I have a white/white model Y from 8.23. I’ve had some strange gray marks on the black vegan leather side panels/trim. Have you experienced this? Any suggestions how to remove them? Thanks!
I had one on order and they told me 2mths initially but I kept getting email delays and I needed a car. I ended up buying an Audi E-tron and it is WONDERFUL. I am actually glad that it took too long. The E-tron is far more superior to the Tesla because it's just a regular LUXURY car that you plug up but it totally lacks in tech. That's what I was looking forward to with the Tesla BUT I found out that the Tesla has too many cameras EVEN in the cabin that they "CLAIM" they don't access unless we give them permission (yeah right). I am really big on autonomy for ME. The other thing that Tesla has on Audi is the take off. I can get 0 to 60 in 5.7 secs. But the E-tron is a very heavy car though. I just wish Tesla and Audi have a baby. Audi has the build and look inside of a luxury car but lacks in tech. I think I made the right decision because I do NOT trust Elon. He looks like a mad scientist who wants to rule the world. I don't trust that one day he wont do something to our cars nefariously or listen to us. I saw a red Model Y with the black accents at Costco yesterday and that thing was GORGEOUS. UMMMMMM and the price has come down also. UMMMMMMMMMM

Rented Model Y for several days in a business trip. Was so happy to get back to my X5.
Why?

I just took ownership of my new Tesla Model Y Performance as well as transferred the FSD from my Model 3 to this.
After tax credit and incentives, the car was... 42,500 plus 10k free supercharging miles.
Great review. Have a Model 3 performance and I love It. I will say that having the Level 2 charger at the crib is a game changer, I couldn’t stomach not having a charger at home to plug in every night. I was on super chargers for 2 months before I got the charger installed at home, It wasn’t the best, and was a time drain to find chargers and plan trips around my range.
Totally agreed. Tesla charger installed at home and like “Wow”!
@@_CPerk thank you!! I'll find out the rates here in L.A and program it to charge at the best times. Much appreciated
Honestly I forget about voice beyond GPS. Thanks for the reminder.
Yeah, I always use the voice commands for the dome lights (off/on), glove box and navigation.

7:57 Hey, here is a tip, in the Tesla app, you can unlatch the doors with a button, so you don’t have to do all of that to open the door.
It’s about $220 to $400 per month only.
@@Arseni-f2bONLY!?!?! The typical ICE car is half of that... that's insane.
Mine would increase from 1076 to 1394 per year if I went from a Chevy Equinox EV to a Tesla Model Y
Terrific video. Very informative and helpful. Thanks Kevin!
Thanks for watching.
That might be the best honest review I've seen yet. Thanks for the information. This will be next car!
Great review, very informative. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
How was your service experience, if any? Great video, thank you for sharing your experience, very helpful!!
For the cold weather concern with the door handles, you can use the app to pop open the door
good to know... thanks
How well does that work though, cause there's generally 1 or 2 times a year our doors get frozen shut here with just a normal car that requires quite a lot of force pulling on the handle to get it open.
@@Graestra Works very well
Wow great now we depend on a computer to open the door. People open your eyes! This is NOT GOOD!
"if you dont want to buy a tesla, dont drive one." FACTS. I never wanted one until after I drove one. now it's an obsession.
My Dodge Durango cost me $800 and it gets about 400 miles of range even after driving it for four years. I never worry about honking the horn remotely, because nobody would ever want to steal it.
My wife had a deposit for a Rivian R1S but after talking to her about Tesla's charging network, how bad Electrify America is and that you can get a Model Y for under $50k, it doesn't really make sense to consider anything but a Tesla.
buy the Rivian with the tesla /ccs adapter, Rivian is going NACS in 2025
This year alone i went from a 2013 Chrysler 300, to a 2017 BMW i3 REx, to a 2023 Hyundai ioniq 5, to a 2023 Tesla Model 3..
no complaints, i very much like my Model 3
I appreciate your candor. I’m still in the fence about electric cars, but have been leaning towards them a bit more in the last year or two.
Over here in the UK, if we so much as hold our cell phone while driving and get caught doing so, there will be a fine to pay and yet most EV's basically have an iPad attached to the dash.
Gap issues seems to be more prominent in US.
Our 2022 M3SR+ from Shanghai was perfectly fine.
I would certainly replace the $10 outlet you are using to charge at your house. That cheap outlet is fine for intermittent use ( like a dryer or stove) but there have been numerous cases of those melting and even causing fires when used for continuous use like charging your car. The good version of that outlet costs $50 to $60
Should've gotten mach e premium with extended range and awd. Quality is unreal and performance and ride quality is grest too. Also very quiet!
I’ve compared it to mache. Video posted on my channel
You should definitely give Rivians a look as well when the time comes
Thanks for the honest review, Kevin. Very informative! (From another tech guy 😊)
Glad it was helpful!
I love how detailed this video is! Thanks for this
Thanks for the review. In regards to panel gapping, my buddy works full-time in wrapping cars with 3M vinyl. He says that Tesla's are the worst put together vehicles he has ever seen. Keep that in mind if you think about putting so much money into a car which body falls apart like Legos.
So what is the true cost of ownership?
I have a big warning for the tesla wall connector. When / if the handle brake, you need to buy a brand new wall connector. I recommend to buy a normal EV connector instead
Would highly recommend to replace that receptacle to a Hubbell "Industrial" grade one. Worth the extra cost for peace of mind
The headlights of those cars are focused too high, blinding the car in front or ahead of it. There should be a recall for those. Strange thing is, some of them are ok, but most are focused high.
Extremely helpful video! I am planning on purchasing a Model Y soon and watch videos such as these to learn as much as I can about the car.
Did you get the car? I plan to get one now, checking on other users' experiences.
I love it man, keep it up, my guy!!!
How was your insurance experience? Been thinking about a tesla but one tbing i keep hearing is high insurance costs here in michigan and some problems with certain ins- Companies.
I use progressive, and it was on par with my last car. State Farm was OUT OF THEIR MIND.
Puur honest feedback love it👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Yeah Tesla is still ok now.
I agree.
And that is exactly why we NEED MORE competition in the space... Because competition drives progress and improvement. Tesla is light-years away in terms of progress and improvements than any other traditional brand but still have lots to learn and improve too so more competition is always good!
I rented a model 3 LR last weekend and I’m now a believer of Tesla. I’m considering getting rid of my Audi for one now 😂
I’m also considering getting rid of my Audi A4 for Model Y. So tempting
Definitely getting rid of my Audi for Tesla
why would anyone do that?@@clip562
prices have dropped as you know, and now they have the refreshed model, which makes the older ones even more dated and unsellable. the phone situation is extremely weak esp. coming from a computer on wheels. the panel gaps alone are a deal breaker for me as a car guy. the lesson on any EV for now an moving forward is don't buy it unless you can afford to be annoyed and also have another back up car, or just lease it. the best option is to buy a hybrid vehicle for today.
One of the best reviews I've seen.
Thank you.
Solid and thorough as always my Ninja
Thanks for great insights and an honest review that is helpful!

I had my fully loaded MYP for 2yrs.. 3 wks ago I traded it in for a fully loaded BMW iX M60 and I couldn’t be happier! Night and day difference! I also had a Model S before the MYP.

bro great job i sub to your channel becuase of the great content on this video.
Thanks for the review, i appriciate it.
Have you done a review of electrolyzers? That is a topic that needs to be deeply delved into.
I have not... I don't think I'm the right person to deep dive into it! Seems interesting though.
Thanks for the honesty, geat video.
Great, honest review, THANKS!
Thanks for a "non fanboy" review of your Tesla. The only reasons I'm considering trading my much love VW ID.4 possibly a Model Y are the Tesla Superchargers. God bless,
What’s the battery warranty like? Do tesla hold its resale value?
I have this car, wife has S and I had model 3.. Telsa is a simple and fine car. The S is way above these two from every perspective as far as I am concerned. With that said they are fine for the price but don't think you are getting the quality finish of an M4 or an E class, you arent' but you are paying so much less you live with it and in the end like the cars.
yeah I think ill keep my Honda Civic. thank you for been honest
Your honesty is your selling point. Thanks.
Great review ! Just about to push "Enter" button to buy new "Y" model. This definitely helps ! Thank you !
nice video thx,,,,,,,informative the most I have ever paid for a car was 40K so I will just keep trucking in my own
I Tried Tesla and then i4 BMW a year ago and ended up ordering BMW instead with M package, adaptive suspension and all the M flares.
Take care.
Yea it’s crazy how tesla charges you for things that should just come standard as they do with other manufacturers.
"Ever since the Tesla Cybertruck was spotted charging, people suspected that Tesla's 4680 cells were as bad as they were on the Model Y. The first documented Cybertruck charging curve confirms this, showing that the Tesla Cybertruck spends a lot of time charging."
Informative video! Thank you for this helpful information! 👏🏻👏🏻
Nice review and commentary, ty !
I loved checking out the new Kia.

UMMMMMMMMMM
I think what wasn’t mentioned was the over the air updates… full self driving is miles ahead of competitors as of today 07/31/24 with 12.5.1 release.
