After driving the Ford Mustang Mach-E press car in January 2021, we immediately knew that in most of the ways that mattered, Ford had seemingly built a better Tesla. So Matt bought one for himself and his wife. Now, two years and 17,000 miles later, Zack and Matt take a road trip to Arizona to discuss the ups and downs of 2 years of Mach-E ownership, as well as demonstrate the charge network (and see some awesome stand--up comedy).

To learn how to charge more efficiently on road trips follow Bjorn Nyland (especially his 1,000 km challenge series) and Tom Moloughney on this site. Short answer: arrive at charger with less 'in the tank' and leave with just enough to get to the next charger. (and don't block 350 chargers w/ a car that can only take 150)

It happens and boy did that happen in the best spot. Because you are right, range is masking another problem with the EV discussion and that is infrastructure and maintenance. That is a hard ass topic at the best of times because I am a 90's boy and all these gas stations just exist, there was a time where that wasn't the case and EV's are at that starting point, which doesn't help when one maker uses a proprietary plug for its charging network but that is another topic.

You're 100% correct that if you have a non-Tesla EV relying on the CCS network, it's charging anxiety. I'm not even going to say infrastructure anxiety, because even if the infrastructure is 100%, you still have to deal with people at the charger. Be that lines, people done and not moving their car, using the wrong charging apparatus (i need 350kW because it's fast...even though my car can only charge at 150kW max), etc.

For all of Tesla‘s issues, the fact that they focused on and built out their own charging net work, because they didn’t want to rely on someone else doing it for them is forever their own advantage. Their prices are way cheaper than all the other charging companies, I can’t believe that some of those charge more than it would cost to fill up a tank of gas. And I cannot tell you the struggle that I’ve had showing neighbors on the new Volkswagen ID4 how to charge their car - and so many of the Chargers are out of service, don’t charge anywhere near the advertised rate or you can’t get it to work/pay

They were very heavily subsidized and given opportunities by the American government that other Brands could not avail of. Elon is a master of "convincing" and/or political chess behind the scenes to get what he wants without actually paying for it. Exactly what a Con does best. I personally do not like a infrastructure that only caters to one brand. If gas stations did this, it would have hindered ICE considerably. Tesla isn't very good at building cars, and that is evident within 5 mins of driving one. But they do have the infrastructure nailed down and if they were to focus on that, the one thing they really are good at, they wouldn't even need to sell cars.

Great video Matt! One major gripe though. As a Taycan owner, there’s nothing worse than pulling up to a charging station when multiple 150kw chargers are free and there’s a Mach-E (which tops out at 150kw) or an iD4 (which also tops out of 150kw) taking up one of or both of the 350kw chargers. PLEASE, I beg, EV owners out there- you need to know the charging profiles of your cars so you don’t inconvenience others. It’s not as cut-and-dry as a gas station.

If you find an EA station with a 350 charger that has the reduced power screen, but there are 150’s available - take the 150. I started on the 350 with roughly the same state of charge as you, and was getting about 80kWh - then switched to a 150 station after a few minutes. Rate shot up to 120kWh for a while. If the Mustang Mach e accepts 150kw and you plug into a potential 350kw charger you will never realize that level power. Even if the charger is rated at 150-350 kw it also depends on your state if charge. Max charging speeds is only possible at lower levels if charge and it will throttle back as the charge level in the battery builds. But this video is a yr old so I guess you've figured this out by now. Further you charged to 86% it's likely not the most efficient level to charge to. You need to plan your trip where it's likely charging what you "need" is possibly faster than aiming at really high levels of charge. It could be,,, stopping twice for 15 min is better than once for 40 min. Use A Better Route Planner and the route creation is really good. Also set a charge location in your car nab system and then set a backup nearby in your phone. Sounds like a hassle but the backup provides for less stress. Finally while it's nice to go 80mph and just power on if you can see your way to the speed limit or a tiny bit less you will likely get there faster if you need one less stop. Convenient? Nope, but a routine makes EV use not as frustrating while the infrastructure evolves. 👍

The pacing around at the charging station was a great way to show how lame the charging time can be in real life on a out-of-town trip even with a well planned route. Meanwhile there was a shot of the ICE cars smoking you time-wise even though you were speeding excessively. You just hook your ICE to the pump, go into the gas station to do #1, and come back to a fully fueled ICE car and go while you laugh at the Teslas stuck at the charging stations. EVs are for home charging and driving around the city.

The 81kw is not necessarily due to EA throttling....since you are charging your battery at 40% SOC, more than likely the 81kw is due to the Mach E programming preventing too much juice from getting to the battery and overheating/hurting it. EVs like these have a pre-determined charge curve algorithm to maintain battery health.

Matt, I'm 7 months and 6000 miles into my 2022 Mach-E GT ownership. I use CarPlay with a cable, and the only issue I've had has been occasionally needing to manually trigger the connection from the Phone menu. I also haven't had the same issue with emergency braking. Not doubting your experience, just adding a bit of anecdata. I have yet to take mine on a road trip where I've needed public charging, but since my roadtrips will generally be in the Boston-Washington corridor, I don't expect problems.
Thank you for the detailed ownership report. Use it in continued good health!

My wife and I just bought a 2023 model Y. Their interface (even though we were disappointed with no Apple Carplay) is quite superior and i don’t miss having CarPlay. We have also used multiple Tesla super chargers that worked flawlessly. I think for now, Tesla has the upper hand. Build quality is the definite negative of Tesla, which we still saw in a 2023.

Great review. For comparison, I do a ~780 mile round trip every few months with my Model Y and its essentially boring. No range anxiety, no infrastructure or charger anxiety. It all just works perfectly every time. I'm a huge EV fan in general and want all the OEMs to succeed. But there is no denying how much better the supercharger network is in the current EV landscape.

Thank you for this video. I’m almost at the 1 year mark in my 2021 Mach E Select. (Knock on wood) the only issue I’ve had is the same CarPlay problems, along with one-touch-up sometimes not working on the rear windows. My only regret is not getting the extended range. Which can be a problem here in FL where the charging network is abysmal. I’ve done public charging once at an EA station between Tampa & Orlando & it worked perfectly, but I know that was just dumb luck. So far though, a great, surprisingly luxurious car to own.

Great video. I LOVE legit, honest long-term reviews. With respect to Carplay, I have 3 cars, all different makes, and all with Wireless Carplay. All three have intermittent problems, some more aggravating than others. My BMW (my daily) is probably the worst offender while my 2022 F-150 has been reasonably solid. I have noticed that when I migrated to the iPhone 14, those problems did not abate. In fact, they feel like they've actually worsened. I would be curious if Android users have had problems with Android Auto. I'm beginning to believe it could be a problem w/iPhone internals more than anything else.

Chargers that randomly lose connection after 1 or 2 minutes, chargers that are supposed to deliver 150+Kwh and they deliver 50-60. Just ridiculous.

Fun video .... Just one tip on the CarPlay issues: Ford appears to have fixed these bugs with the latest UX update it looks like you just received. CarPlay launches much more reliably after the 4.1.x OTA. I found no issues after unpairing phone and car and then re-pairing CarPlay with the new UX. Prior to the new UX (the one with the "home" button in the upper left) CarPlay connectivity could be flaky, and sometimes it would find one phone and not another one.

If all these electric cars are soulless appliances for commuting and to serve a utilitarian purpose, I would 1000% get a tesla on the basis of charging infrastructure and quality alone. I drive a 328d touring and can add 1000 km of range in sub 5 min, this would be infuriating.

I like the Mach E as a value proposition vs the model Y because: higher quality build, availability of siriusxm, in 2024 access to Tesla Supercharger network + Bluecruise availability/subscription with all trims!
And yes, the issue with non-teslas in infrastructure anxiety not range!

You can program the windows yourself. From the up position roll then down with the button the entire time. When it is fully down continue holding the button for a couple of seconds. Roll it up holding the button the entire time the for a few seconds after it is up. The auto up/down will now properly work. This process is the same for many vehicles.

Good to see that although there infrastructure isn’t perfect, this drive actually doable.
