  • This is a tutorial on how to install a front sway bar in your vehicle. The vehicle used in the video was originally a 1996 Honda Civic CX, Sway bars are one of the most effect suspension components for better handling performance. Most sway bars and installed in a similar way. The bar used in the video is a ST [Suspension Techniques] 24mm front sway bar for a 1996 - 2000 Honda Civic LX/HX/EX.

    Ugh I'm glad I watched this. I guess I'm not installing a front bar on my integra. My dam exhaust manifold can't be split or come off my head with out machin work. 2 studs are froze in the head and the bolts holding the upper manifold and lower last time I installed them were forced in and I'm lucky they didn't snap. There's no installing a header unless I pull the head and machine those stupid exhaust studds out.

    One thing I did different was re installed the wheels before tightening up the bolts on the sway bar and drove it onto ramps. I was able to reach all the bolts with the wheels on. And the suspension was loaded.

    So you have a 24 in the front and 22 in the rear? Doesn't that still over steer a little or is it pretty neutral? What spring rate are your coils? Sorry for the million questions.

    • @MichaelFlare
      @MichaelFlare  9 лет назад

      Manuel Hernandez The bigger the bar in the area, the more that area will slide out more so a 22mm rear sway bar will not swing the tail out as much as a 24mm rear sway bar. You want to find the ratio you like the most, and it really depends on the car's suspension setup and chassis. I like 24mm front and 22mm rear. If I did a 26mm front and kept a 22mm rear, the car will have more UNDERSTEER because the front will want to slide out more on a turn. If I kept a 24mm front and did a 26mm rear, the car will have more oversteer. I'm not exactly sure about my spring rate numbers but my setup is Skunk2 springs with KYB AGX struts.

    Sup Mike, Thanks for the video. I have a question since I ran into a problem. I did a 5 lug conversion on my 98 integra. Bought type r rear sway bar which didn't line up correctly with rear subframe which I already bought the correct rear sway bar. Anyways for my front lower sway bar. Should I bought for Type R or base model? When I did the 5 lug conversion I remember for the front, I recieved the 5 lug disc brake conversion with upper control arms. I've read the lower front control arms are the same besides bushings. Well i'm learning and struggling along the way. Do I need to buy aftermarket endlinks too? I've been working towards an itr clone, pretty close to being all stock besides the rear lcas and f..7 brace. Thanks man if you can help advice me on the compatibility.

    • @MichaelFlare
      @MichaelFlare  7 лет назад

      You're Integra's rear lower subframe will not have holes to fit a large sway bar like the Type R, those holes were originally made to fit smaller sway bars like anything less than 18mm or something. That why you need a subframe brace like me because the braces usually have more holes. You can get OEM or aftermarket for the front lower control arms, it doesn't matter.

    • @ricksdom6105
      @ricksdom6105 7 лет назад

      Thanks dude. Yeah I have an after market rear subframe and the spare rear sway bar. I could only find the front lower sway bar (only) without hardware and through ebay it's pretty tricky with products showing different compatibility. I'll probably buy end links by hard race.

      @slhines7 8 лет назад +1

      Ugh, you are right and thanks. No, my EG never came with either anti sway bars front/rear. It took awhile to eventually get the rear Eibach bar installed and now the challenge is the front. Hey Michael what would happen if I put a 22mm in the front and a 22mm sway bar in the rear ....what type of steering would I have over or under steering 1992 Honda Civic h/b

    • @MichaelFlare
      @MichaelFlare  8 лет назад +1

      +ebony973 22mm in both the front and rear is exactly what I have as my setup right now. Ideally, this will have a little bit more oversteer compared to a factory EK9 because a factory EK9 has 26mm front and 22mm rear.

    • @MichaelFlare
      @MichaelFlare  9 лет назад

      ***** Maybe the new bolts that came with your sway bar is not the right size to fit the car's hole. Tapping and making a new thread for the sway bar is very difficult because it's takes a lot of power and effort to make the new threads. I think auto stores have kits available that will help you make larger bolt holes but like I said, it's going to be very difficult.

    • @MichaelFlare
      @MichaelFlare  10 лет назад +1

      You have to find the right balance you want for your car. The bigger the bar, the more that end will swing out. Sway bars is one of the most effective suspension components for racing; it makes strut bars seem like Jell-O. I have a large Civic Type R rear sway bar so this bar was just the right size. My car's handling is superb! It kept my car's body roll very minimal and the turning was very strong, quick, and stiff making it very responsive. There are times when I was oversteering because of the balance of the bars (I blame the CTR rear bar. LOL). Overall I love it. It understeers and oversteers on a few corners.

    Why did you choose an ex control arm over an si??

    • @MichaelFlare
      @MichaelFlare  6 лет назад

      Juan Rodríguez The Si arm uses a side mounted sway bar end link. The ST Suspension sway bar I have uses a top mounted sway bar endlink and the EX also uses a top mounted endlink. Not only that but the strut fork is also different for the Si and the EX. The Si is the only model with a slightly different shaped strut fork than all the other models (CX/DX/LX/EX). I would have to change my strut fork also if I got the Si arm and still won’t be able to install the new ST Suspension sway bar.

    • @MichaelFlare

      In these type of old cars, the electrical system is very traditional. There's no components that stabilize the poewr currents throughout the car. For example: When a subwoofer beat hits, the headlight would usually dim in old cars. I have never heard of an RPM rising after a headlight is turned on but I know it's the same concept as I stated above. Perhaps you should google and see if others have solved the problem. @MichaelFlare  9 лет назад

      I don't know everything about the SiR but I know they are simliar to EM1 in the USA. Every Civic in this generation in USA have top mounted sway bar mounts on the front lower control arms except for the 1999 - 2000 Civic Si [EM1]. The EM1 uses the simliar layout as the EK9 for the front sway bar because they are both side mounted sway bar mounts on the front lower controls arms rather than bottom mounted, and they also have a wider strut fork to fit these control arms too. Again, I don't know everything about the SiR but if you tell me whether your SiR's front sway bar is top mounted or side mounted on the front lower control arms, then I can tell you a more definite answer.

      Of course the sway bar is mounted to the subframe in the middle. I'm asking about the mounting style on the lower control arms itself where the ends of the sway bars connect to. Is the sway bar supposed to be top mounted or side mounted onto the control arms? Look at it and tell me which one.

      Michael Flare side

    • @MichaelFlare
      @MichaelFlare  9 лет назад

      I taking your word that the control arms have side mounted areas for the sway bar. The EK9 sway bar is also side mounted meaning it will fit with the control arms. The only thing I can think about your issue is that you have wrong endlinks. There are two types of endlinks (top/bottom or side mounted). Any Civic model lower the SiR/EM1 will have top mounted stuff. You have the wrong endlinks. Get side mounted endlinks.
