Great job, Chris. After being a teacher for 32 years I must compliment you on your teaching skills. Your explanations were very clear and concise and the visuals excellent. Thanks for the great "lesson." Grade= A+
Thanks a lot!
@@chrisfix I live in pocono mountains.. Heard the good causes you participate in on top of changing so many peoples lives with your videos.. I myself have very minimum money and you have helped a ton with my blazer and envoy fixes. Thank you.
I’m learning a lot from all his videos. Been taking notes. Boost my confidence more. And to pursue a passion I should have gotten into.
@No idea What's my name is specifically after such a nice explanation!
@@chrisfix Where's the trademark blue disposable gloves? That looks really messy!
Did this job myself (74 y.o.) for less than $30.00 in parts. Thanks Chris !!
Great job!
Wow, you've literally helped me fix almost every part in my car. Saved probably $1,500 and got to pick my own parts with all the projects.
Having the same issue with my sway bar link. I didn’t want to cut it off but it looks like I might have to.
💯💯💪🏾
Had a garage mechanic tell me today that my whole front end needed to be replaced and he could do it for $800.00. I decided to wait since I just bought the thing, license and registration was close to $500.00 and tires were pushing $300. I went to change my oil and saw that one side sway bar link was missing and the other so worn out it was loose....less than 20 dollars and I changed them out, it steers good now without the wobble. Thanks for another informative video.
Thats good. It seems simple enough
For $800 you could replace the front end and the rear suspension yourself!
Chris, your ability to communicate clearly and concisely puts you miles ahead of the average guy producing Yuotube videos on auto repairs. You are truly gifted, and I thank you for the work you do. You have saved me so much money on my car repairs.
I'm sure everyone appreciates the the work that goes into your productions and all of you guys that contribute on here we thank you many times over. I'm mechanical however I would never attempt some of the fixes I've completed without all of your contributions. Soooo, thanks to all of you guys that take the time to show us rookies how it's done.
+tablesidecurve No problem! I am glad you are learning a lot!
well, I'm no mechanic and you explained it well...the whole procedure was clear and straightforward. Thank you Chris.
I bought this '02 Ford Ranger a few months ago. It squeaks a lot when I drive, when I go over a speed bumps, or holes, even when I sit in the drivers seat. I was planning to do a complete suspension overhaul. After watching this video I now think it is the sway bay and bushings. If true that will save me $money in the short term. Eventually I will overhaul other suspension areas. Thank Mr. Chris Fix.
Definitely change those out and see what happens! And I would check the other areas while you're at it! Thanks a lot!
@@chrisfix A reputable garage looked it over and told me I needed a suspension overhaul. I recently retired. I got the time. I got retirement $money coming in. I have most of the tools. I plan to buy a suspension parts kit and get this repair going. Maybe I'll hire a good shade tree to help if I get stuck.. From what I've seen on your videos and others, I can get this done. Thanks. p..s. that garage wanted $3200.00 to fix it.. I can beat that.
Thank you for posting this video, I am working on a 24-year-old motorhome. Your video has given me a much better understanding of the sway bar end links, I had no idea how they came apart or if they would be under a spring type pressure. Now I know what to expect. My parts are larger, but basically the same.
Out of all the mechanic youtube videos I have seen in my 30 years of my life, This person has the best video(s). Everything about the video is well done, The camera angles, The talking, The telling of what to do and how to do, The clearness of the video, Everything about it is well made an done. I'll give a 10 out of 10
I’m three blunts in motivated as hell to upgrade my suspension for no reason

How much did u spend on everything u replaced?
How much you spend on the 3 blunts
@@jacobpaul681445 or 30 depending if it’s prerolled and how much in it
I was too mate. Don't do it lol. 3 of my 4 sway bar bolts snapped off inside and i had an "all new" learning experience on what to do next and a car off the road for 4 days...
Never noticed symptoms when driving, but when I did my oil change yesterday, I discovered two things. First, I have an oil leak somewhere, only 2.5qts out of 6qts was drained; and that I have a total of 2 sway bar bushings (that is counting passenger and driver side), so I am going to try and fix that tonight. Thanks ChrisFix, you explained it well enough to give me confidence in repairing this.
Man your videos are always to the point and very easy to understand. This will be yet another repair that a non-car guy like myself feels 100% confident in doing after watching your tutorial.
You are becoming more and more a car guy everytime you watch a ChrisFix video
I know this an old video so why comment.. anyway your videos have made me do something for my car myself and you have saved me from some annoyances to pay top e for mechanics! Tnx, and no disrespect for you people who make their living with cars, i am just trien to get by right now and these videos help!
I’ve got the (almost) same exact truck, these videos on suspension and steering are super helpful for someone who’s starting out. It’s reassuring to see the process in your format, even for something so simple.
The older Ranger/Mazda trucks are so easy to work on. I have one and do all my own repairs.
Me and my 16 year old son were able to change both parts out in 55 min and we have never done it before. Your video helped me save 200 bucks. I will be going to your site any time I we have any mechanical problems. Thanks a bunch!
+Charlie Fulmer that's awesome! I'm glad the video was helpful!
I had a bad "clunk" when I turned or hit small bumps. Turned out I was missing a bushing on each side. I noticed it while doing and oil change. Replaced mine this weekend on my '03 Explorer Sport. Used the same parts. I followed the video and it was really easy. Ran into one problem where I did not have enough threads exposed for the nut. I had someone pull down on the sway bar enough to expose the threads and quickly screwed it on. Great instruction. Subscribed just for this.
Matt Hanak Awesome Matt! I am glad the video was helpful and good job diagnosing then fixing the problem! Sounds like it went smoothly!
Couldn't have gone smoother.
Your sway bar should move relatively easy, shouldn't have to hang on it to get yer nut on.
I had to do this same job on my '04 Explorer Sport Trac, by myself, and ended up lowering the vehicle onto a jackstand, and then using the jack under the lower control arms to get the end link arm bushings to squeeze down enough to get the nut on; couldn't rotate the sway bar enough by hand by myself. But it all worked out.
I like how you very succinctly describe what sway bars/links actually DO. The only thing you'll ever see on Google and such is an overly general 'they help with stability' or 'the help with controlling your vehicle'...you actually say it, like all the other sources should do.
Man Mr Chris Fix I’ve learn so many things watching your videos I can say enough how great full for you I am, thanks
That’s awesome!
Mechanic will hate that channel if they know it exist. Thanks to the confidence that he instilled in me i am able to change my oil, change my breakk pad and enjoy the lifetime warranty that comes with them, do my tire rotation and etc. Saving me a ton of money
+Bullet Proof awesomeee! Glad to hear you are learning a lot!
Imagine holding a camera with those hands. lol much love and appreciation to chrisfix. Im so glad this yt channel exists
My wife's 02 2wd expedition was making a clunking noise. One of the links was completely missing the bushings. This video really helped me and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Thank you
Hey Chris , Great video .I like that your very detail oriented which is very helpful and you don't waste time with unnecessary talk which would confuse . Thanks
Your videos are awesome! I have an 02 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ that I just took in for inspection. They wanted $800 to replace a wheel hub and one outer tie rod. Did it all myself for way less than that! Repair manuals are good but nothing beats seeing a video!
ProtectionDirect It is amazing how stuck these end links can get right? I tried everything to get the stupid plastic piece off and had to resort to sawing it off!
That looks easey to do where did you get the parts from
patrick cordery I get my parts from Moog or Mevotech. I usually go to Advance Auto. They never give me problems and they price match amazon so I get the parts cheap.
I workin on my explorer I'm doin the ball joints thank god u made a vitio about how to it's helping me so much thank you Chris
patrick cordery Great! That is awesome! I am glad the video is helping!
ChrisFix Hi Chris, is it typo error in the title saying "Swar" instead of "Sway"? Or it is what it is?
Sir I want to take time to say thank you. You have saved me about 300 worth of repairs. My walet and my trucks thank you.
Another GREAT vid, Chris! Please keep bringing it for all the DIY and DIY wannabes out here! You work makes our work so much easier, and inspires confidence! Cheers! Gary&Lucas @Edmonton, Canada
Just did both links and bushings today. My truck is raised, so I didn't need to lift it, and I didn't remove the tires...worked out great. Thanks for the video!
Awesome! Nice work
I've watched a LOT of repair videos, and this is one of the best I've seen! Very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for your videos Chris! I think almost 50% of the wear & tear parts replaced by myself. It save a lot. I also did a simple comparison test between the workshops and myself. I think I prefer myself as workshop just do to beat against the time and number of cars they attended to.
Again, another excellent job Chris of explaining and showing how things can be done. Great lighting, great close-ups. I love a RUclipsr who knows how important it is to use a tripod:) Straight to the point. I appreciate all the effort you put into these videos.
I've watched quite a few fix it videos and yours are by far more professional than most from people 2 or 3 times your age. Nice Job.
Never back off a nut, or you might end up with blue bushings.
Atreyu Auryn lol, yea, I too was also taught to never back off a nut! Especially on castle nuts where you have to stick a cotter pin though. It is better to tighten it a little more to get a spot for the pin rather than loosen. New automotive 'how to' videos every Thursday and most Mondays so stay tuned!
Falkor lol ..thanks for the laugh I needed that.
😂😂😂😂 haha haha omg laughed to hard at that omg!
Mine are red, what's your diagnosis?? Lol
Gotta love the under the radar sexual jokes ahaha
Add a lockwasher and locktight to the nut. No worries if you set it to factory recommendation. Or get selflocking nuts.
Only very small thing I would recommend is turn the frame bushings so the split faces aft to avoid water entrapment.
Other wise great job as usual. Your videos keep my mechanical brain working.
We are all here to learn and share knowledge.
You really are one of the best mechanics I've come across and make jobs I thought look easy lol. Never missing a step and very clear. Thx buddy keep up the awesome info
Seriously, you should have your own show. Your videos have helped me allot. Plus the knowledge you have is great. An asset to RUclips!
I’m glad the videos are helpful! Essentially I do have my own show. My videos get more views than a normal tv show!
Wow you should have been a teacher my friend. What a great job you did explaining this.
Thank you so much.
+Sun Daze thanks. Essentially I am a teacher!
Thanks, Chris. Very informative, no wasted words or pix, excellent production (fade, segue, fast forward...), and I learned a lot. I have a 2002 Explorer I'm tackling tomorrow, with confidence, but little suspension experience (OK, zero). I'm glad I found this, and I sincererly appreciate the hours I know it took to make this 10 minute video. Just great!
The facing surfaces of the small bushings where they meet the sway bar need grease also. That's where the real squeaking comes from.
Don't use lock-tight on the big bushing mount bolts, use anti seize. Looked like those bolts went into anchored nuts in the frame. if you use lock-tight you increase the likelihood of breaking the anchor nuts loose next time you need them off and, properly torqued, they are not ever going to vibrate loose. I use anti-seize on just about every fastener on the chassis. The problem down there is not that they vibrate loose, the problem is they rust together. Anti-seize is your friend under there. It will NOT induce unintentional loosening of bolts. Use it on lug studs also to get accurate torque. A little goes a long way.
FABULOUS, thorough video! I was quoted a complete sway bar / end links repair for my rusted-through sway bar and your explanations and visual shed the desired light on my situation! THANK YOU TONS!
after watching your video , I feel confident I can do it
Thanks
I'm an apprentice plumber, and I've seen your videos multiple times.. the "never back off a nut" rule has done me wonders, thank you!
this video is worth its weight in gold. thanks Chris
+THOMAS DRELICH no problem!
THOMAS DRELICH seriously best video I've seen on it too by far. Very clean and simple not too much, not to little.
Agreed. Well done. Straight to the point and no stupid music or bs. You the man.
so basically worthless? lol
Samir lmao just was thinking that
Man you make everything so easy especially with the camera angles and the way you set up your prep station for every job. I’ve gotten so much done on my 1990 Oldsmobile 88.
Another part I didn't know needed replacing because I didn't know it existed.
It must be really gratifying to be able to do so many repairs on your own car. Must bring a lot of peace of mind. I myself just got a new car and to be honest, pretty scared to do these kind of repairs. Not that they're needed for a while, but I just don't trust myself enough.
The original sway bar bushing opening was towards the rear of the vehicle , I would think facing it forward could allow road salt and dirt to enter the bushing easier
Good eye !! Yes, the crack goes toward the back ! Makes for cleaner, neater install. I used Energy Suspension brand of Urethane Bushings and end links -- the Front Bushings that attach to the frame were replaced with Greaseable fittings.
One-inch REAR Sway Bar gets Energy Suspension's Greaseable Bushings and Urethane-bushed End Links.
Thanks for the advice, Chris! Just did this to my '01 Mazda B4000, and my old end links looked just a cruddy as those. I rubbed some anti-seize on the bolt shaft where it contacts the outer tube, so hopefully that won't be an issue next time (which is hopefully not for a while).
You're right.. once a nut is snug or tight never back off the nut, it loses its bond to bolt and keeps getting looser
Loctite 220
The one I had comes with a locknut, you can back those off because its not tension keeping it from turning under road vibrations.
I didn't know you had to unbolt the sway bar lol, I feel so dumb as I loosened the lower control arm when I replaced the upper control arm to be able to slide the link in. I have no idea how I didn't think of taking off 4 bolts to get the link in lol. Thank you for saving me a hassle
Glad the video was helpful!
Hey Chris your videos are very helpful and every detail, and "how-to" are great explained without misinterpretation of the product instalation process. thank you for your tips.
Dude, you rock. Straight to the point, no extremely high tech tools and great audio/video.
for rusty parts like that sway bar, ever soak them in vinegar? then lightly brush the rust away, dry off and coat with a light grease or oil?
This is one of many ChrisFix videos that has helped me turn my ‘94 Ford from ragged to rad.
It’s satisfying to do it yourself as you save money.
I have to add that in my experience with my Yukon, it is best to install the sway bar links with the wheels on the ground then jack the front end off the ground to tighten. This alleviated any play that I experienced installing and tightening on the ground. I get around 6-8 more full turns and steering is tight no chatter.
Thanks for the advice great idea
Hi Chris. I just love your videos ❤️.very useful and just. You don't know how much fans you have out side of U.S. we love you and use your lessons in places which is not a comparable clips like yours. Although, our cars are much older and out of dater than your , but I think the techniques somehow are the same!
"Never back off a nut", Kids, That's how babies are made! :)Sometimes you really do need to back off a nut ;)
Lol i try to tell that to my woman all the time. I gave up so i just catch her by suprise instead haha lol
LMFAOOO omg i'm a too frequent "that's what she said" person and legit took me two minutes to finally get the joke. I'm geeekin now
I love this project and you make it look very easy. The only thing I wish you would have done was paint the brackets. You made the sway bar look so good it's a shame the brackets didn't get that treatment. Great video, Chris.
Thanks Brian! They got some love later on ;)
"i was always told, never back off a nut". Wise words being quoted here.
This was a very well explained video. If I was t on oxygen I would do it myself.
Good video -- BUT -- Sway bar bushing was installed backwards -- crack goes to the BACK !
End Link nut was installed up-side-down. That's a NY-LOK nut, and it is always installed with the rounded part toward the end of the bolt. After completing sway-bar installs/upgrades on several types of vehicles, I've found that Energy Suspension has the best selection of top-quality Urethane components for both street and racing applications.
I'm so glad to have a cordless impact just for these days!
No joke I had to do my sway bar links on my new truck which is a ram 3500, first ones I've ever did so didn't know what I was doing so I cut them off and made the job way harder then it needed to be. Just watched your video and I'm so angry at how easy it is that I may go buy new ones again and redo them.
Exactly what I needed. Thanks Chris!!
hey chris great work as usual, amazing that this video is 7 years old and still pertinent now!
I noticed you didn't put any grease on the sway bar link bushings? shouldn't you put some on these as well?
I went to a garage this morning and the job would cost almost 700$ can... and if they also change the struts it comes to like 1800$ lol. And i paid the car 1000 $, so I guess I'll try to change the bushings and links myself.
@GoodmorningDan I have a pontiac vibe, so it's like a corolla or matrix... The links were not so hard to change, I used a metal saw to cut the rusted bolt and a vice grip to hold the rubber part to remove it. But, I totally aborted the sway bar bushing. I would have to lower the sub frame and a shit load of stuff. And actually I didn't felt too much play...
It fixed the shaky steering at 100km/h, and really reduced body rolls. But 6 months later, I think changing the bushings could be a thing to considerate, but I'm really not sure I'll do it myself, and I should probably change lots of things in the suspension in general... so I don't know if it's worth it
and it's all CAD, so the numbers looks bigger than USD
@@Hide_and_Tweak so were u able too find the bushings
@@phillippainter2435 I know where they are and how to have access to it. You have to lower the subframe.... So I will absolutely not do it lol especially this winter. Anyways, I think changing the 4 struts would be the most radical change I could do. I'll see if I change the whole suspension next year, cause I'm not sure it's really worth it for a car so cheap.
its saying something when there are 58000 likes and no dislikes. This dude has saved me thousands of dollars. About to do this repair this afternoon
Good job on this video. Your photo skills and narration are very good! Thanks!
Ypu are an amazing teacher, im changing my bushings on 08 dodge nitro, cant find a video to GUIDE me but will see how ut looks FIRST, thanks Chris 🤙
I was sure you would paint the frame mounts but still another job we’ll done
Soon you’ll have a whole brand new truck. M
Another great video Chris!
Because your videos are so well done, if you take the time to watch them to the end it's like having done the job once making it easier the second time!
Question: Would it be beneficial put the same silicone grease inside the smaller bushing as well? I'm also thinking some grease inside the bolt tube would protect it from weather and debris.
Tremendous!
Thank you!
Yes that might not be a bad idea!
and if you work alone on your vehicle you can always use zip-ties to hold everything in place =) easier and safer
+Max Kalin lol funny
Yep - he just gets better and better. You simply CANNOT beat a ChrisFix video.
dude there's so much "that's what she said" material
Breaker bar?
I hardly know her!
LOL
Ok Michael Scott
oh I tought he said the break her bar!
That's what she said
I was doing brakes on my Ranger, and saw one of my link bushings had broken. It had been popping a little. This fixed it. I did the body mounts a while back. It rides really well.
good job. paint the bushing body mounts next time too. lol
Thanks!
You make this look so easy! My car is having some clunky noises on uneven surfaces and instead of taking it to the shop I think I'm just going to repair it myself. Thanks!
"just take the bolt off" sounds much less simple when you live in the salt belt and you are repairing a 22 year old car with 200k miles.
I'm from Australia and I'm amazed at the under body rust from cars where salt is used. Different world.
Yeah you don't know what rust is unless you live here.
Hey, man. I love your channel.
I don't mean to be needy or gready. I own a Ranger in the same range as your Mazda.
Would it be too much to ask for a list of those videos? It would be very appreciated.
You're clear, clean, and thorough.

Get a new one and never notify your current one. She will get mad when she finds out, but she will leave on her own.
You need a breaker bar and some penetrating fluid to help you break up smoothly :D
Great Video! I am confident to do the job now You should be an auto shop teacher

Just how it's supposed to lean
LOL I know I'm a little late commenting on this video, but a good tool to always have with you is a torch. Sometimes heating up the part can help Break It Loose. and if that alone don't work, reheat the part then spray it with penetrating oil. let it sit for a moment and nine times out of ten it will come out.
9:25 lol i see what you did there ;)

My friend, I love your Harbor Freight ratchet. I use the same one for my work, and it's put up with a LOT (including being used as a rubber mallet)
The Bible says if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. We're living in the end times. Jesus will be rapturing his church before the 7 years of Tribulation begins. He will come back after the 7 years. If you miss the rapture don't take the mark of the beast, you can't go to heaven if you do. It will be on your right hand or your head. God bless you.
Thank you! I've been dealing with rear end noises that have been driving me mad! Ordered some Moog sway bar bushings and end links, followed your steps, and the noise is 90% better! Now to locate that other 10% haha
If you plan keeping the vehicle for a period of time that you'd replace the sway bar bushings again a good practice is to use Anti-Seize compound especially on the tube you install. I'm completely redoing my 06 Impala , quikstruts, lower control arms, bushings and links front and rear, outer tie rod ends, replacing broken front sway bar and bushings, power steering rack and pinion and I use Anti-Seize all the way around the vehicle as you never know if you may have to pull that part off to fix something else, due to accident, warranty purposes and it helps being able to get them off. don't know if you've seen the moog problem solver kit for the front sway bar link. It's nice how they have them setup. Keep up the videos ++1!
NO PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC would use or recommend an "anti-seize" compound be applied to the threads of suspension parts. Clean bolts that are properly torqued to specs will not loosen in service.
great video, sir. I bought a ram 2500 from a lying monster of a person- truck has been full of surprises. you're helping me along my to do list. keep up the good work man.
Just discovered my bushings are gone on my 04 ranger sway bar links when I removed my front bumper to paint it. Thanks for the video
I am amazed the the sway bar link wasn’t broke already. Mine rusted and broke on my Mazda B4000. Ford had thicker ones to fix this problem. Went from 3/8” to 1/2 “ bolt size.
Chris I wish you'd do a video on changing the REAR Sway bar Bracket bushings (not the end link bushings, but the actual bar bushings... on a 2003 Ford Exploder. Thanx for your vids - they're the best!
