  • Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz’s two-day sentencing hearing began Tuesday with the families of the 17 people he murdered getting their first chance to speak to him directly. As one of Cruz' defense attorneys tried to argue against what was being said in the courtroom, the judge quickly shut her down.

Imagine defending murderers in court and acting surprised when the murder victims families give you a hard time. Am I the only one who thinks this just goes with the territory? If a lawyer who defends murderers can't handle people not liking them for doing their job then they shouldn't be doing that job in the first place. Thin-skinned prima donnas.

I heard something about them being forced to take the case..but, they're not legal aides, so I'm not sure how true that is.
So I'll say it like this - IF they weren't forced and they volunteered for this case (most likely knowing it was going to get them press, even bad press), then they deserve any blow-back they got and will continue to get.
Idc how much money I was being offered, u couldn't pay me enough to defend a monster like this.

We are mad about their childish and insensitive behaviour towards the victims. Yes, you have to defend the indefensible but you do not have to laugh/joke around with him by throwing a middle finger up. You also don't have to be disrespectful and state "THESE people will never not be affected by this" while waving a hand at the victims of YOUR CLIENT (his guilt is not even in question on this; he's a proven and admitted mass murderer); do not look down your nose at his victims, do not try to minimise their loss and making yourself the bigger victims. It's Broward County (70% liberal). 🤷🏾‍♂️ It should have been death sentence (aggregators massively outweigh the mitigation), any fair person who look at the scale would have reached that conclusion. But the unanimous verdict requirement (new to Florida and the fact that Broward County is a very liberal county) made one dishonest woman get in the jury and ruin justice without fear or consideration of community's good.
I kept repeating my warning that the current law is not really the law the legislature wanted. It was forced on us, then we had an opportunity to change it and we missed that before the trial. 👉🏿 Before 2016, no unanimous decision was required for death sentences in Florida. The Florida Supreme Court initially erred by saying unanimity is required, before reversing it 2020. In between, the legislature amended the law to comply with the court ruling in 2016, but didn't restored the simple majority rule after 2020.
A judgement of death (even if not administered until some 15 years later) would have been a value judgement on what he did, unlike what happened here, where his life was worth more than all 17 victims. This is a killer who searched on google "good songs to hear while killing people" before he went to that school. And the mitigation case was thoroughly debunked. 👉🏿 If the awful juror was an anti death penalty hack, her dishonesty may know backfire and increases the death penalty verdicts after the legislature restore our simple majority rule.

Mercer admitted he’d packaged the drugs for distribution and was charged with felony cocaine trafficking, 7 felony counts of possession of unlawful controlled substances and 1 misdemeanor charge for possession of drug paraphernalia. @@atrailmckinley4786 It's Broward County (70% liberal).

The defense did there job! Rather we all like the decision of the jury. The court system requires a defense in a trail. Well! The scriptures say the eye of a needle a lawyer getting into heaven. I am for the death penalty! I also believe God has his hand in everything. Perhaps the ultimate test is this-We trust his justice. We put the final verdict in his ✋. His knows all things! My hope is the families' receive comfort from our creator.

      He went there anyway.

Are the defence attorneys really claiming to be victims here? They’re in a courtroom full off families who lost the children and love ones at the hands of their vile client!

Anger should be directed to Florida State Legislature for demanding an unanimous jury for state capital crimes. Change the law. Sorry, defense means defense and is a right guaranteed in the Constitution. The defense did their job. It stinks that he gets to live but everything was done as it was supposed to be done.

I've seen this footage so many times in different places. I still do not understand why in the HECK the defense attorney thought they were in a position to curtail victim statements in any way. Kudos to the prosecutor lady for explicitly stating it is their RIGHT under the applicable codes to speak !!!
Was the defense just making sure their client didn't have any ground whatever to appeal on inadequate (zealous) representation or something ?
Judge was obviously done hear it, and good for her. Wasn't a very disciplined defense group ...
