  • Abby Hoyer, sister of Parkland murder victim Luke Hoyer, testified at Nikolas Cruz's sentencing for killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018. Abby Hoyer described for jurors all the parts of her life that are no longer "normal" because her brother was murdered by Cruz. "On the days I don't think about my brother, I feel guilty. On the days I do think about him, I feel broken. There is no peace," she said.

I overdosed at my school during my freshman year of high school because I had no friends and was a complete introvert. I remember waking up in the hospital and seeing how badly it affected my family. I'm almost 21 now, and I'm doing a lot better. My half-brother hung himself last year, and I nearly lost my big brother, but luckily he didn't go through with it as I did.

When I saw this one it hit me for a different reason. I struggle with depression daily. Hourly. By the minute at times. And a lot of my thoughts are about after I’m dead. Like will I cause my family to become more distant? Or could it force them to come together and appreciate the importance of family.
But then I think of my sister. I think of her being the one to stop my mom and dad from blaming each other. I see her being stronger than most. But I can see her break down like she did. Idk. It actually made me cry for multiple reasons but that was the main one.
I truly haven’t cried in years. And pls don’t worry or feel the need to say I’ll be okay. Those sort of comments make me only feel worse because I don’t really like attention. But if you feel the need to say it, I totally understand. Just know I’ve taken the steps to get help and I’m as optimistic as I can be!
I guess I’m saying this as a reminder to realize at crucial times - it all can be over. This goes to siblings who may be mad at each other over something so small. Parents who may have kids acting out (find out why). Anyone who hasn’t spoke to family in years. Or friends who may be distant over a disagreement.
Idk I feel what I said sounds kinda corny and dumb but felt the need to.

I lost my older brother to car accident and I understand the pain of loosing your sibling. I bet loosing your sibling to senseless school shooting is worse pain because it shouldn't have happened at all.

Your life is not normal Abby but the world shares your pain and knows who made it abnormal ,if there is any justice in this world and although it will not bring Luke back. That justice will be served.

I don't know how someone could just go out and hurt so many people. I get a lot of bullying, even as an adult but I don't think of going out and hurting a bunch of people. However, with that said, it should be obvious that not everyone reacts the same way. People should really try to be nicer to each other. If you don't like someone don't try and be friends, don't try and hangout, fine. But to just bully someone makes them part of the problem as well. There is no justification for what he did but you have to step back and think.. if he had not been bullied would this have still happened? Maybe.. maybe not.. but regardless, it wouldn't have made things worse.

I can't stand hearing that you get bullied even as an adult. I wish you could find a way to get away from those people. I hope you have very caring people in your life, too, and if you don't, please find some. Volunteer somewhere where good people are, anything.
      I care. ❤️

but he showed he was Always as bad as any evil bully/serial killer, bc he targeted: just anyone. Bigots don't see the person inside, they blanket a slew of strangers; bullies are bigots that way, they do not see past the outside, they do not imagine a full entitled person, a mystery, a sacredness not apparent on the surface. He had no mental faculties to realize that not everyone is the same; while a bullied person of basic competence (which includes empathy; lack of empathy/imagination for the Other is retardation.) knows that Really well, Never wants to be the aggressor- knows, I don't deserve this, and in the Same Way, I may not judge anyone who is a Stranger to me, the way I have been judged by people who don't know me. May I Never be what I hate-- a decent, bullied, person says. He was bullied, but not decent, ever. He fully took on the way of the bully. without a hitch. It was him. He was always an aggressor, always the very same as anyone who ever bullied him. Bc you don't forget the ability to know that it is not fair to hurt strangers, as was (putatively) done to him.

I totally agree, but this kid was mentally screwed, and I don't think bullying would've changed anything.
His own mother hated him. He was violent since childhood.
