- The gunman removed his face mask after Parkland victim Jamie Guttenberg's mother rebuked the defendant for hiding his facial expressions. "You shouldn't be sitting there with a mask on your face," she said. "It's disrespectful to be hiding your facial expressions under your mask when we as the families are sitting here talking to you."

Exactly!!! People like this do it partly for notoriety & infamy. Their names should be available for people who really want to find them, but they should just be known by a random code NOT a name. And there definitely should be no books, no entertainment-related interviews (they definitely need extensive psychiatric assessments & analysis to find out why they do this & how to stop them), and definitely no movies or TV. Perhaps then it will not be such an attractive way for these psychopaths to deal with their problems.
Forgetting is one of the main reasons this keeps happening, just behind the naive people who think it’s somehow a terrible thing to protect children or thinking just a few more restrictions is going to somehow make this impossible.

As a parent who lost my 5 year old daughter 36 1/2 years ago, I can assure you these parents' lives are changed forever. Never again will you see that beautiful face and spirit that was so uniquely theirs. While the initial heart piercing, breath stopping pain will subside somewhat over time, the memory will return again and again. Every holiday, Valentines Day, Easter, Mother's or Father's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day weekend, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas will be a reminder of a soul absent from the family, the wondering of what would have been that year, the grandchildren never born and loved. The loss doesn't end until your own death and release from your earthly pain. I wish the juror(s) who decided against the death penalty would have understood this. While it would not have lessened or changed the parents pain, it certainly would have been more just than this monster showing no more emotion than he would if he had been listening to a random lecture on a subject he didn't care about! I pray for these parents in their unimaginable loss.

It's bleeding hearts like you that not only removed the death penalty from many states but now is letting dangerous criminals out on the streets today with no bail. You can have compassion for people that deserve it but some just are completely evil and deserve no compassion, just consequences for their actions. It's the same as disciplining your children, with no discipline they don't learn right from wrong. The death penalty is the deterrent for many NOT to kill others.

My heart breaks for them. Having to not only fight the killer in court, but to have to endure countless weeks of horrific photographs, video footage, detailed injury descriptions, etc. my heart hurts knowing these kids will be kids forever. No one should be afraid to go to school.

I can’t even imagine, my daughter is 14 and is brilliant, kind, inquisitive, and gentle. I could not even fathom losing her in any way especially by the hands of someone that had nothing against her, but was disappointed in his lot in life….for everyone involved, I’m so, so sorry that this monster couldn’t just get over it and do something positive to make his situation better, instead of destroying the innocent.

Forever 14....makes me think of a poem my grandmother wrote about a son killed in WWI. The line that grabs - "My son, my son. Forever 21." It always makes my elbows shiver and grabs my heart.
I'm so very sorry She had to make that speech, but it is a masterpiece. She absolutely nailed it. My heart goes out to the families of those beautiful children. They are the ones we need remember from here forward.

Consider: Psychiatric drugs(“medicine”) alter brain chemistry/chemicals & are notorious for eventually inducing psychopathic traits in individuals. Those drugs often lead to those deemed “mentally ill” becoming sociopathic & ultimately “crashing out”. Certain drugs prescribed/administered in psychiatry can also diminish recollection…

I really wish the jury could see these. I’m also glad they’re being aired publicly. I think our country has become so numb to school shootings. Most never go to trial, we never have to hear the gruesome details from the medical examiners, or hear victims recount the hardest day of their lives on the stand. This trial has humanized the tragedy again. These statements have been so impactful. They’re heartbreaking and vulnerable and I wish they never had to be written.
I keep trying to make it through without tearing up but as a mom & decent human it’s so hard 😢

Good, now he won't sit in a solitary cell for 30 years getting special privileges while he makes his appeals. Now, he's going to be in general pop. He's going to be beaten daily by the other inmates and he's going to grow old and die in a concrete box with no one to love him or hold his hand. There will be no peace for him, not a single day. Every day he'll wonder if today is the day someone shanks him for credit on the block.

I am SO GLAD that Mrs. Guttenberg changed her mind about addressing him and was given the opportunity to do so. Mr. Weeks' remark was one of the most disgracefully tone deaf, if not outright callous statements made during this entire trial. It needed to be addressed BY one of the family members who were the most deeply impacted by what he said. The absolute strength of this woman speaking for the families, for Jamie, and for the victims directly to their murderer is astonishing and deserves so much respect. My heart has been with them for the whole time and always will be ❤
For the families to have been through what they have, then re-traumatised by the evidence and testimonies, having been ordered not to react.... to show restraint when the person that destroyed their lives is sat right there..... I just... I don't even know what to say. The strength they have shown is inspiring. I couldn't cope listening to a lot of the evidence in this trial and I'm completely disconnected from it. I can't imagine what they're going through & I hope I never have to.
I feel so much pain in my heart as I watch these victims speak. One thing I’ve noticed is the tapping on the podium as they speak. It’s almost like they’re trying to cope with that moment so hard. I don’t know why that stands out to me but the pain is just incredibly sincere and obvious. I pray every single day that they find some peace during this trial. And I pray they continue to find strength to move forward in their lives, which will never be the same.

What Cruz did was horrific, and he should be accountable. However, given his horrible childhood, I feel compassion for him. See the video where his brother tells him "I love you," and Cruz sobs, maybe hearing these words for the first time in his life.

I can't imagine how it is to speak to the person who killed your child. I don't know how they contain themselves. They are so strong.
Forgive me, but I wouldn't be able to hold myself back from going up to that murderer and strangling him for what he did.
