- Michael Schulman, the father of Parkland murder victim Scott Beigel, spoke to Nikolas Cruz during his sentencing for killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, telling the 24-year-old he hopes that he dies a painful death in prison. Schulman also had strong words for Cruz's defense team, accusing them of unprofessional behavior throughout the case.

Me too. I cried several times during his statement, and then balled my eyes out more after. I just can't believe what's going on in our world now. Kids bringing guns to school to get revenge or whatever it is their seeking. I'll never forget Columbine and all the others, especially this one... So fresh.

It's the jury who gives the votes on the murderers fate and the judge reads the verdict. 12 out of 13 jurors voted for the death penalty while 1 voted for life in prison.
It was supposed to be a total of 13 votes to make the death penalty happen.

I’ve seen this man sitting in this courtroom daily. Silent. Same expression. To hear him speak today, about his life and loss from this horrible case was absolutely devastating. Truly heartbreaking. I hope that he and the other families will have justice one day soon.

Knowing 500k people watched the funeral means absolutely nothing, it's because of the heinous acts of the killer not because the victim touched so many lives. You're crazy if you think that will help the slightest bit.
What really got me was when he said “no one wants to call my daughter on her birthday because they don’t know what to say to her”.
That really hurts.
I truly wish this man, his wife, and the rest of the victims families find peace somehow. He spoke wonderfully and kept his composure incredibly. He held back way more than I ever could’ve. I love you and I love what you stand for.

Nicholas face during the entire trial and the impact statements is infuriating. I can not imagine having to be a family member sitting there seeing his blank almost smirking face, and his lawyers joking around and flipping people off. These families are unbelievably strong beautiful people.

This defense team really seem like awful people. Nobody threatened their children. My jaw dropped when I heard the defense woman ask the judge how she can allow them to threaten their children… in the sentencing of a murder case of 17 kids. Despicable, it’s satisfying however, to know that everybody sees their true colors. They debate on flipping the bird??? All these parents lost a child, and the defense tries to make it all about them and their hurt feelings. Truly unbelievable.
If there is no or inaction defense team on behalf of the murderer. the court will be faulted and charged for unfair judgement. The defense team HAVE to do their job, they cannot just screw over their client just because he is a mass murderer. The defense team probably don't want to do this, but it is their obligation and duty to defend and help their client, and gaining experience from extremely difficult case. The defense team don't just defend the killer, but also the innocents.
If you never know a lawyer, you would curse them. They can actually charged you for court of contempt for threatening them, but choose to take it and move on with their day. Lawyers work crunch time, travel from court to court. Work day in and day out. Defense team who defend mass murderers are probably not the most well paid, as the family probably refuse to help the mass murderer at this point, so public funding have to be provided to the defense team, which let's be real, isn't a lot.

I've been to prison twice. I've never killed anyone or done anything close to what Nikolas did. But I do know what the inside of the private prisons in Florida look like, and I have a good idea of what prison he's going to end up in. He's going to suffer infinitely more doing life in a private Florida prison, than sitting on death row in a government run Florida prison.

I teared up when he talked about Scott and the wonderful human being he was, the things he did for people, for children. Those memories will always live on, not just with your family Scott, but the world. We heard about it here in the UK, but coverage was spotty.
We need to remember each of the 17 people who lost their lives in such a cruel, senseless way. Learn who they were, what they enjoyed.
This gentleman his summed up everything this animal deserves, and everything he will get, and be forgotten about as much as is humanly possible.

We lost my little brother and watching my mother go through that was the worst part of it all.
There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching a parent grieve.
He was also my best friend I experienced sounds I've never heard come out of my body

My heart absolutely breaks for these people. I lost my 22 year old son from a brain bleed and I am heartbroken. But this is just crazy!
i love how the judge paid so much attention to every single speaker and really truly listened. she knew this was their moment to get some closure and she wanted to show they all had her entire attention for what might possibly be their darkest or brightest moments of their and their deceased loved one's entire lives and they deserve nothing but respect and full attention
This hit so close to home, this man reminds me so much of my father, even how he looks but especially the things he said and I just keep imagining him standing up there having to go through this pain because of someone’s disgusting actions. The words he said, the hand gesture the stories it was like exactly what my father would say. I can’t imagine how I would feel if any of my family members were murdered and it took over 4 years to even BEGIN to get justice, I can’t imagine my life without my older brother he’s everything to me. I work in law in the UK and they have started filming and publishing case but they’re very restricted they only show the judges sentencing you can watch them on RUclips

I've watched this so many times and it doesn't easier. I respect this man so much who served as an attorney for 45 years and to call out those unprofessional lawyers the way he did. He lost someone special that day. Scott was courageous, brave, and he loved his students. His heart is massive and showed so much compassion to his students. Mr. Schulman, you have my respect in every single way. Thank you for having the courage to share your thoughts about Scott and describing the amazing person he was.

I normally skip past videos that are longer than 10 mins but I stayed and watched every bit of this. This man laid down the most honest and deserving speech. It makes me feel like I know Scott now which is insane.

As a Father whose oldest son was murdered 10 days before his 21st Birthday, I think I can relate somewhat to this Father. I’m just sorry the Judge couldn’t “Set Aside” the ruling in the Penalty Phase and Sentence this POS TO “DEATH BY TORTURE”. I pray the inmates do this for us.

That has forever changed how Christmas is viewed in my and his Sisters view. I try hard to keep it normal Christmas, it’s just difficult. I’ve gone through counseling and not much help- but we continue to continue.. I just hope and Pray the Families are able to find some solace in that the POS can never do that to any other family.

If he does exist as they say, then he did nothing. The only ones who should get the credit are the victims that had to endure it. I remember when this happened, where I was. I admit I didn't follow this trial, but the heart of this father hit me hard. Knowing law was his profession and passion then having to stand and face the animal that wrecked his world just made this so much more heavy. I am so grateful the judge allowed him to speak in the manner he did. (Even when it was explicit at times) That was a rough, yet necessary verbal berating of Cruz. Praying for long-term peace to these families and all affected by this evil.
Immediately when he started speaking I sobbed. Most people can’t imagine what these families have gone through and will go through. Unfortunately I can not only imagine but remember vividly the emotions, physical pain, and anxiety from my own experience. When my brother was murdered in my senior year of high school I thought that was as bad as things could get. Then you enter a courtroom and have to be immersed in the worst day of your life over and over again. The defense repeatedly assassinated my brothers character and devalued him as a person trying to defend the indefensible. They called him a thug, brought up his past, and even blamed him for his own death. They were allowed to represent my loving, protective, and amazing brother as being a criminal who “ lived by the sword and died by the sword!” There is nothing worse the sitting next to the coward who changed your life and listening to people make excuses for him. To have the defense beg for mercy so that this killer could see his family and friends again. Only to hear a sentence that is not fair and receive no justice. We went back repeatedly to do our victims impact statements and every time those same unhealed wounds would be ripped open again. I’m so happy this monster will never be free again. I could not imagine anyone sharing the pain our family will share when my brothers killer soon walks free.
To the families we stand with you! You are brave and your are strong!

It is disheartening to see individuals belittling these victims' families. It is impossible for anyone to truly understand the pain and suffering they are going through. We must refrain from telling them how to mourn or how to feel. The loss of their loved ones was a senseless and violent act, and we must show them compassion and support during this difficult time.

I’ve noticed this man in the courtroom many times and he has always peaked my interest. I knew when he finally had his opportunity to speak he was going to do a phenomenal job and I was right. As soon as he said he was an attorney I knew it was going to be very powerful and well spoken. This trial infuriated me. The victim’s impact statement’s really broke my heart, especially this one. You can tell the father is beyond heartbroken.

I must applaud the presiding Judge Elizabeth Scherer for allowing every relative of the murder victims to give not just a statement but unedited, fully loaded victim impact statements. Mr. Schulman's words and thoughts were heart rending as he did not hold back his emotions, his feelings, and his righteous anger and directed them straight at Cruz, including, but not limited to, at the entire defense team. He gave no quarter to the killer and no quarter to the killer's defenders.

This guy is so intelligent and well spoken, and very thoughtful, concise and very hurting. It's so easy to have compassion for the loss of a wonderful beautiful soul, his son Scott. So appreciative he spoke for his family and stood for ALL the families this boy destroyed

I hope the families find peace and I hope they are able to move on but also keep loving their loved ones even if they are no longer here. It is so painful to have one of your loved one die in the hands of another person; murder is so different from natural death.
