  • Victoria Gonzalez, the girlfriend of Parkland murder victim Joaquin Oliver, gave a moving impact statement during Nikolas Cruz's sentencing for killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Gonzalez, who was wearing the shirt that Joaquin had worn the night before his murder, told Cruz she wished that he had love in his heart but she knows that's not the case.

That hits me right in the soul.. Obviously, it doesn't justify what *he* did, NOTHING could justify that! Not any one thing!
But, it reminds us that we're dealing with a seriously sick *human being* here, a person who started out, like you, or me. He was born a boy, into this world of ours, this Nickolas Cruz..
And I doubt he was always a monster, this boy Nickolas. Long before he decided to go *FAR* off into the wrong path, leading him to shoot and kill other students, he had developed into a broken, horribly troubled and misguided young man because of his horrible upbringing at home, that he just couldn't handle. He really should've gotten help, and it angers me so much, that it got to this point, and that he did what he did, became a monster. It angers me, that his actions, what *HE* did, has claimed so many innocent lives! It really does strike me! It angers me most of all, that if his father would've secured that weapon from his son's reach, Nikolas would not have been able to commit such atrocities!
God be with the victims families! Praying for y'all! 🙏

Recognizing that he IS a human being, that he probably was suffering many years before he decided to do this, he was lonely, he was hurt - but none of that takes away the fact he decided to impost that hurt onto others. That is so much more intriguing to listen to. I feel like when you believe someone doesn’t understand you, you won’t listen to anything they have to say, cuz they don’t get it. But it sounds like she understood more, and that’s what may have turned his ear (hopefully)

This world needs empathy more than ever. I have been bullied and as a result have bullied others because of the pain I was carrying. The cycle needs to break and the only way to do that is by accepting human beings as individuals and not as soilders of society. People have unique traits and characteristics and it’s alright to have opinions, but as long as the opinion is helpful and beneficial towards the Individual. Opinions are alright. Cruz was just abandoned and that’s what caused him to warp his mind in a negative direction. We’re humans after all, there is no one else in the universe that is going to give us compassion like humans do. A random youtube video I came across after searching for a Parkland update has made me think & feel more than I have in a long time. The world lost someone important when her bf was killed. True young love. Not only is it a rarity, but it’s the stuff fairy tales are made of. A cynical older person like me often gets caught up in my stupid problems, and they are stupid in comparison to the loss she’s been thru, and she just smacked me in the face with her wise words. She experienced a lifetime of love in the time she spent with Mr. Joaquin. I hope she finds it again in whatever form will help her heal the most. The love, empathy, humanity, heart, eloquence and righteous anger are all so amazing.
You could see the judge and court stenographer were holding back tears the entire time.
In the advocacy work I've done I've spoken with survivors of school shootings, including those who lost their partners or friends in the shootings.
It was some of the hardest but most eye opening and enlightening work I've ever done.
Hearing their stories firsthand from the terror, anguish, pain, trauma and fear they survived is so incredibly heartbreaking.
Knowing that, like this young woman, so many of them will never be able to trust or love again is heartbreaking.
Seeing how many people either don't care, refuse to do anything or actively fight to make the situations worse is endlessly enraging.
Living here in Colorado for the past 7 years I've also met people who were going to Columbine when the shooting there happened and I've driven past the school countless times.
Even though the overall violent crime and homicide rates have decreased American violence has evolved in a very distrubing way.
Gang violence during drug epidemics is bad enough.
    Inter-community violence is bad enough.
    Neither are acceptable.
But we live in a time when we literally can't keep count of the mass shootings because there's more than one per day and it's not possible to keep track.
We live in a time when people will travel over state lines to carry out a mass shooting just because they don't like a group of people or because they're just filled with an overwhelming general hatred for humanity.
We live in a time where THE leading cause of maternal death is gun violence.
Not illnesses, injury, nutrition, accidents or medical conditions.
The most likely way a pregnant person in America will die is by their partner shooting them to death. Try to wrap your head around that.
We live in a dark timeline where it's pretty difficult to look at the overwhelming darkness of American history and believe that there's light at the end of the tunnel.
I hope I'm wrong, but there's far too much apathy in this country and the ones who are holding back progress are a lot more active than those who claim to want change.
If there was a coalition the size of the NRA that was as organized as them that was fighting for reasonable firearms regulations we'd be living in a much better place.
If we had as many people organizing to fight for accessible mental health care and common sense gun laws as we do people fighting for unrestricted gun access we'd live in a much better place.
To be clear I am absolutely NOT blaming this on mental health or using it to excuse these actions.
There's hundreds of millions of people with severe mental health challenges who never carry out acts of violence much less premeditated mass murder.
But there absolutely is a perfect recipe of far too many guns and far too little mental healthcare which can only lead to terrible things.

Empathy and love like hers is one in a billion. This is the most powerful statement I've ever heard. To go through something like that and not lose your capacity for grace and still be able to see the humanity in the person who murdered her boyfriend takes a stronger soul than most possess. I've always considered myself empathetic, but she's on another level. I hope she never loses her spirit and that she's able to find peace, the world needs more people like her.
