  • Fred Guttenberg, the father of murder victim Jaime Guttenberg, gave a powerful victim impact statement during Nikolas Cruz's sentencing for killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. At one point Guttenberg directly addressed Cruz's defense team, accusing them of admitting to giving the middle finger during an earlier proceeding when they lost a ruling, but refusing to apologize and simply blamed the media for putting it on camera. Guttenberg also called for the resignation of Gordon Weekes, the head of the public defender's office, for his comments during the sentencing, when he asked the judge to limit what the victims could say about Cruz's defense team during their impact statements.

Have you watched TV lately, and noticed the percentage of commercials hawking prescription drugs? Well... Seeing this kid go to the gas chamber is not in the interest of Big Pharma, because if such a spectacle invigorates drug detractors' attempts to prove that such medications cause such actions, the ensuing lawsuits against the producers of said drugs might just multiply his wrongful death judgement by 18 (for this case alone), plus whatever punitive amounts might be assessed. Moreover, it would also undermine the credibility of some of the most powerful companies in the world if it's shown that they knew what their medications were likely to do to a segment of their customers, as well as what that same segment of their customers was likely to do to those around them.

The lawyer who said "No one else endured anything like we have in this courtroom" is a clown. Absolute buffoon to even think that was remotely appropriate to say in that context. These families will take this pain to their grave. I'm just appalled that he even had the nerve to say that.

His calmness and class yet delivers a LOUD resounding resentment to the murderer and those garbage lawyers. Well done. I actually cried a bit, I can't imagine what he went through BUT the fact that he turns the hate into love and will help victims have beautiful endlessly loving dogs is wonderful. Every child should have a pet in my opinion, im here as a 27 year old even and my dog is my love and I'd give anything for him. I sincerely thank these families for this unprecedented push for gun safety and child safety, they are all heroes and deserve the world and hopefully we, as Americans, can FINALLY learn from this and protect children.. no child should ever feel trauma of any kind or be told what a shooter safety drill is.. absolutely appalling BUT there's still time to make it better.. its never too late to change the future.

I find that this man made MANY good points and he did not just speak on behalf of himself. He spoke on behalf of all of the victim's family members. "How many people in this courtroom won't see their family member get married?" "How many people in this courtroom will not be able to send their child to college?" He made mention of the way that they had supported each other. He said he did not know any of the other victim's family members before the shooting. He indicated that they were all there to support one another through these trying times. He could have easily been having a heart attack when the medical examiner was discussing what happened specifically about his daughter. He indicated that he is going around "harassing" politicians. I think he is not "harassing" them, but rather making them aware of something that they're ignoring. In my opinion that is not "harassment" but a respectable concerned citizen who lost his daughter to murder holding the government accountable and bringing to light serious issues that need to be addressed. Anyone who is reading this can call it what they like and disagree with me. That is NOT harassment. That is being a good person and an advocate. This man spoke about what they had to "endure" and I think this man is a saint and a survivor. The shooters team made statements that the victim's families were "inciting violence" during the trial. Let me ask you this. Did ANY of those family members pick up a gun and shoot someone? Did they injure anyone? Did they commit any violent acts? They had peaceable protest. If they want to see inciting violence, they should look at the idiot that they had to defend in this case. HE incited violence and not only that but he murdered a large number of people and injured many more. I think that the defense attorneys lost their sense of morality in this case. I have seen other videos from the trial. The defense team was rude, disrespectful, took shots at the judge and the prosecution, and in general just made their office look terrible.

It's amazing to see how the parents of a victim will work to help other victims of gun violence in the name of their child. The world is crazy but I still think that the love and care of fellow human beings is stronger. I've been contemplating it. If someone sees another person about to fall its just innate instinct to intervene. We watch out for each other.

As a 30-year trial attorney I can say with confidence that for those defense lawyers this was their worst nightmare, being chewed out by a grieving father, with his saddened wife standing and staring too. The defense lawyers will never forget these days (and probably considering a new law specialty, so s/he never has to face this again).
I especially enjoyed watching them squirm, keep their composure, trying to hide by looking away; alas there was nothing they could do except look at the speaker. That was a wise move, lest they risk the bereaved SCREAMING "can't you look at me when I'm talking, can't you show my murdered daughter just a little respect. Just fake it you scumbag!"
To avoid that trauma, at 6:48 we see them all shutting up and keep eye contact with the father. (That's hard to do, especially while on worldwide TV the bereaved is telling the universe you guys are the biggest assholes in it, and that in a nutshell you're all pieces of 💩.)

@@janetmurphy7053 in some respects I agree with you. I kept thinking of the judge who presided over the Ahmad Aubrey case. Night and day.
This judge was an embarrassment. She could have stepped in during the most personal attacks. But the parents were just “doing their jobs” for their lost child and their families.
They are entitled by law to speak. So she let them speak.
Just as jurors knew what they were taking on, so were ALL attorneys. Suck it buttercup.
They could have objected but they didn’t. Maybe because they realized they went overboard defending a confessed murderer and the families called them out.
They was not a trial to prove guilt but to decide punishment. And he escaped just punishment.
