SUPERMAN - THE MOVIE: DC Movies Revisited

  • SUPERMAN - THE MOVIE is without a doubt the film that gave birth to the idea of superhero movies as a viable, big-screen genre. Before Richard Donner's 1978 film, superheroes were campy (see the old Adam West Batman) but with this movie, they treated the Man of Steel with respect. The result was a money-making bonanza that paved the way for more big screen superheroes. We get into the history behind the film, including the casting of unknown Christopher Reeve in the title role, plus Margot Kidder and Gene Hackman, along with Donner's herculean struggle to get it to the big screen.
It's all part of our latest show here on JoBlo Videos, DC MOVIES REVISITED. We plan on counting down all of the major DC movies, from the early days of Christopher Reeve and Michael Keaton to the current DCEU and beyond!
DC MOVIES REVISITED is written, narrated and edited by Tyler Nichols, produced by Chris Bumbray & Nick Bosworth, and executive produced by Berge Garabedian.

A genuine masterpiece. The film goes from cod-Shakespearan space opera with Brando to disaster movie to John Ford-esque domestic drama to screwball comedy to romantic drama & back to action movie.
Donner & Mank understood that Superman needs human connection & the world as much as the world needs a Superman - he's the one superhero who acts solely out of love for the shared humanity in which he is a part.

    1st. R.I.P Christopher Reeves.
Being born in 76, I was a little kid when I saw it the first time. I loved Superman and when my mom and dad bought the movie. I wanted to watch it all the time and was told no every single time. This would be my issue as an adult. I remember when Superman 2 came out and if I thought I loved part 1, part 2 was even better. Well by the time we bought part 2 I was older and playing football and baseball. I boxed for 5 years, so I didn't have time for movies anymore.
In the early 90's there was a comic book that came out that I had to have. DC The Death of Superman in comes Doomsday. But like as a little kid, I was told NO.
When I finally moved out in 94. I promised myself and my future kids. I would NOT tell them NO like I was told as a kid. I also went and bought all 4 of the Christopher Reeves Superman movie series. I found the comic book The Death of Superman. I own every Superhero movie that has been made along with every Superhero tv show made that came out on TV. I need to get the TV show pilot Aquaman that stared The Green Arrow from Smallville Justin Hartley. I haven't seen it yet and when I had the DC universe app. I was more worried about reading all of the comic books that I wasn't allowed to as a child. My wife laughed when she saw me me reading comics. Then I told her about how I was treated when it came to watching and reading Superhero stuff. Yeah she backed off then and called my momma. My mother said that all of those comics and movies were all a waste of money. Anyway, Because of a Superman The Movie I got to see as a small kid. I fell in love with the Superheros. Dont get me started on the Super Friends cartton back then. Lol. Have a great day and thank you for reminding me about the original Superman movies.

Look better then modern Superman Routh cgi model away looked fake. Same for Cavill. For Reeve he was their. Like at Tylor Hoechlin he look like he was their not a cgi model. Just put your actor behind a blue screen and move the background around him

    • @fred36956
      @fred36956 17 дней назад

@@PeterTennant CGI or computer graphics used in more recent Superman films did not show the elegancy of how Superman flew. The CGI shots were either of a "super small Superman" flying fast or a close up shot of the other actors playing Superman flying. No full body shots of Superman flying; take off or landings as was seen in "Superman: The Movie." Even the way George Reeves flying in from a window was more "believable" than the CGI effects in the more recent and probably future Superman films. Christopher Reeve being a glider pilot gave him the "moves" in his flying sequences that "made you believe a man could fly." None of the later Superman films did that. In fact, CGI is very much overused in all special effect movies, whether comic book heroes or space films. Look what Stanley Kubrick accomplished without computer graphics. No space film has matched "2001: A Space Odyssey" with CGI effects.

Richard Donner said that Superman turning back time was for the ending of part 2 but do to budget and time for the first movie, it had to be finished so it was placed in part 1. Also superman flying fast around the earth generates a quantum field and because special fx was limited the effect comes out poorly and is not fully explained so it looks like he just made the earth spin backwards.

Great video. I saw this when it came out after tons of comic ads and articles had us bouncing in our seats over in anticipation. I can still recall the magic and being blown away even beyond anything Sinbad movies or anything else had done. Luthor wasn't a hit at first but by end of movie had grown on me; he had a clever sneakiness that made him a perfect arch enemy. I love that Superman '78 comic and Batman '89 have given us a chance to revisit these universes (which we were sure were the same one). Keaton's even returning, like dream come true. I just wish Reeve and Kidder could. Maybe Hackman at least could give us a live action return to it (with Supergirl actress?) or even meet Keaton to canonize these being the same world?

    @user-dr2yz8um3d 8 месяцев назад

The original Superman is 45 years old!
It was the second highest grossing film of 1978 behind Grease making $300 million worldwide
Everything in this movie works; from the cast to the music by John Williams to the amazing special effects to the action scenes
Seeing this movie you don't see actors you see these characters coming to life from the pages of the comic
When it comes to the flying scenes you hardly notice the wires for Reeve because it blends so well, you're actually with the actors flying through the city being so swept away in the magic
Many actors since then have donned the red cape but few have been able to match the successful translation of this film, after all Superman’s devotion to truth and justice is naive but the proof is in the outcome
The example he sets is ultimately humanity’s duty even when he’s amused how humanity works he’s still allowed to feel a range of emotions making him fully fleshed out
Alexander Salkind, his dad, and Richard Donner pulled off an impossible feat bringing this iconic hero to life even though there was so much behind the scenes tension they ultimately parted ways afterwards
Several different cuts of the film have existed as well so people can pick their poison
Regardless the movie was enough of a success to make merchandise, radio dramas, tv spin-offs, cartoon series, and even more film adaptations bringing a new interpretation
Humans can be a great people if they wish to be, we only lack the light to show the way, mind usually wins over matter, all the powers in the world sometimes can’t save everything and everyone, we punish ourselves with vanity it leads to self-destruction
Whatever problems people still have with particularly the ending making no sense not figuring out the technicals behind it still works tremendously
Thanks to Donner and company Superman is more than just a symbol, he’s a character making us believe even a god can become a man and this ultimately set the template for superhero origin stories to follow

Jeff East who played young Clark apparently was upset when he learned his voice was to be dubbed. Heard he got over it.

“And over the last few years we have heard a lot about something called ‘family values’. And like many of you, I have struggled to figure out what that means. And since my accident, I've found a definition that seems to make sense. I think it means that we're all family. And that we all have value.”
    - Christopher Reeve, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in 1996.
    What a Super Man.

Few times it can be said that lightning was caught in a bottle. Casting Christopher Reeve for this role was one of those times.
He made men who played the role before him obsolete and the ones after compared to him.
CR is Still the best Superman ever.

Reeves was and always will be the ONLY true Superman. I encourage everyone to read Reeves last book before he died. He had endured real life tragedy, only to fight back as a Superhero.

I really do admire this movie. Watched it for the first time proper a couple of years back and I thought it was damn near close to perfect until the ending. Damn sad moment and even comes back to something he learned in his youth about not always being able to save everyone, even with all his power, but then the film does it's famous turn time back trick for the sake of having a good ending and completely ruining a surprisingly thoughtful bit for those times. Makes you wonder why they bothered with the idea if that's what the ended up doing with it.

STILL the best (live action) Superman movie EVER.
F man of steel..bVs..superman returns (TO BORE the audience)...none of the makers of those movies GOT the character work...and what made it work then..and what would make it work for today's audience.
RIP Richard Donner, Christopher Reeve, Marlon Brando, Margot Kidder, Mario Puzo & Jackie Cooper.

I love the three hour version of the movie. Three hours eight minutes to be exact. Krypton is stranger and its destruction/explosion is scarier. Lex Luthor goes darker and is not quite as toothless as he can appear in the theatrical version.

Still the BEST Superhero movie of all time. No other superhero film has been able to match it's ambition, creativity, charm, or heart. Sure, Batman was great, but a little more niche. The original Superhero was PERFECTLY casted and you couldn't dream of a better group of actors.

It has nothing to do with the quality of the film, but the decision to release it on HBO Max at the same time rather than trusting people would return to the theaters. I think next year all DC theatrical releases will get a 30 day window before coming to HBO Max. And the comment isn't wrong. Shang-Chi is doing quite well.

To put in perspective how good Christopher Reeve was; more time has passed between Reeve's 1st film in 1978 & today than from the serial of 1948 til 1978. But in 1978 fewer remembered the 1948 serial & even less remembered the man who played Superman Kirk Alyn. Arguably the Superman of the 50s TV series, George Reeves, was also less remembered in 1978 than Christopher Reeve is today.

For all the flack that the Weadon cut gets, Henry Cavill came the closest to finding “Superman”. While the movie itself wasn’t great, his Superman at the end, felt like Superman.
