Say what you will about the movie, that scene where the supercomputer turned her into a cyborg scared the ish out of me as a kid. It was right up there with the Howling, American Werewolf in London, and that scene from Zombies when that lady's eye got pulled in that shattered door splinter. Sure she looked like a cross between Dr Detroit and Dr Doom but the transformation process was well done. It stills holds up today as a pretty gnarly WTF-moment.

The Chris Reeve movies follow the silver age way of thinking when it comes to the character analysis of Superman. The real persona is Superman whereas Clark is the mild mannered disguise. Kinda like how he was described in Kill Bill. They didn't switch it around til the mid 80s comic reboot. It really is toe-may-toe/toe-mah-toe with who is the public persona as they're both good people inherently

  • @nathanhearn356
    @nathanhearn356 2 года назад +4

A very underrated movie and one of the better Superman movies. Essentially, Superman’s villains are Lex Luther, Mxyzptlk and Brainiac reimagined. Robert Vaughn was a great villain - a laid back and almost likable version of Lex Luther contrasting nicely with Gene Hackman’s hammy bully. Richard Pryor was great as essentially Mxyzptlk as an every-man with near magical abilities with computer science - and his being the creator of Brainiac is actually more logical than the villain’s origins in the comics. The computer monster was actually one of the best Supes villains in any film. The comedy and light tone make this basically the polar opposite of Man of Steel while being less dumb and more entertaining. This movie deserves better than its reviews and a future Superman movie could do a lot worse than to use Superman III as a template over the dark, overly serious, humorless downer Snyder-verse monstrosities.

Moreover, film deals with the themes that are actually quite relatable in the present times: globalism and media manipulation via computers. Robert Vaughn is great as Ross Webster, a forerunner to modern day's Larry Fink. Yeah, Richard Pryor is a bit over the top at times, but I honestly didn't mind him. Chris Reeve, though, is fantastic throughout! The convincingness with which he portrays contrasting Supermen is out of this world. An awesome actor giving his all in an ungrateful role of an early cinematic superhero. Highly recommended!

Definitely prefer it to the 4th.
Over the years, the second film feels more and more like the mashup production it is.
I don’t hate it at all, I love stuff in it- but it doesn’t have enough to bring me back again and again.
    (Outside of watching Zod clips)
The 3rd is at least more concise with what it’s doing.
It’s got an interesting concept with Superman being a jerk.
Chris Reeve is obviously having a lot of fun.
It’s actually my favorite performance of his in the series. He feels comfortable in the roles, he gets to play Superman and Clark in a variety of ways.
I like his scenes with Annette O’Toole in Smallville.
I like Richard Pryor, even when it’s not his A material.
His inclusion is so cynical and insane, but it somehow works for me.
Anything bad in the movie is at least weird and funny.
    I’m not saying it’s under-appreciated, exactly.

I kind of agree that his relationship with Lois had run its course but more broadly, his romantic relationship with “mortal” women had done so.
    That’s what happened in II.
So, having him move from one mortal woman to another, makes no sense.
It’s kind of like having Superman Returns pick up where Superman II left off.
Sure, it makes fantastic thematic sense but II ended with Superman saying he’d never leave “us”, again. But in Returns he returned after being gone for about 5 years.

It's not a great movie and probably doesn't resonate with many others, but this movie has a major soft spot in my heart. Not to pull a card, but I'm gonna pull a card and seeing Pryor as a "computer whiz" was inspirational for me, as a kid who was just starting his (LONG) videogame development career. Also, all of the "bad Superman" scenes are GOLD. The bar fight, his "saving the damsel" on top of the Statue of Liberty, comedy gold. LOL. It's not a great movie, but I still love it (mostly).

This was the first Superman movie I ever saw(when I was 9 years old), and I remember wondering later why all the critics were giving it bad reviews, because I can tell you that I was certainly in no way disappointed by it myself! In fact, it was the most thrilling movie experience I ever had until seeing "Return of the Jedi" a few weeks later.
Perhaps it isn't quite as good(or as important to the series) as the first two movies, but so what? It still gets the job done, and I would take it over any of today's "Man of Steel" movies any day of the week!

I loved it as a child, I loved them all only to realise as I got older that none of the movies matched the first! But 3 and 4 are definitely fun to watch, they are entertaining!
As a kid I never understood why there was a picture of young Christopher reeve (Clarke Kent) hanging in the school at the reunion when we had seen a teenage Kent in the first movie! Always annoyed me for some reason 😏🥴

I saw the movie when it came out the summer before I went into high school. I have never seen it again since. In comic books or on television episodes, you can have one issue or episode that is a change-of-pace. With blockbuster tentpole movies, that's not really an option.

This one was my favourite as a kid. I just watched it again at the weekend and it’s still my favourite. The only thing I wasn’t really into was the super computer at the end. I think something like the Zodiac fight from superman 2 would have been better and made superman 3 pretty much perfect as an overall story.

If I'm not mistaken, the "child's Idea" of Vera turned into a Robot in Superman III was later inspired by Star Trek writers including Gene Roddenberry which led to the "Next Generation" era, aka the Picard/SIsko/Janeway Era for the creation of the Borg that its mythology was then expanded upon, is that correct?

"Brainiac" would have been the ideal choice for "Superman 3". Unfortunately, all
they gave us was Richard Pryer. To be fair, although not near as strong as the 1st
two Superman films, "Superman 3" did have some strong moments. Notably, the
fire at the plant and, of coarse, the battle between Superman and Clark. Naturally,
the best thing of all was the screen being graced, once again, by the greatest
live-action Superman of all-time, Christopher Reeve.

The sad thing is, because of horrible decisions the DC universe with Christopher Reeve, Michael Keaton and Linda Carter should have happened. It's because of these studio executives, producers and other circus clowns at Warner Bros like John Peters, that Marvel beat them to it.

As a kid, I loved Superman 3. I was too young to know who Pryor was, but I thought he was funny. I loved the scene where he skied down the skyscraper, and onto the street. Computers were new, and having Pryor find a loophole to skim enough $$$$ to buy a Ferrari was entertaining.

Ha, I was right. I knew even back when I was a kid, that crazy people produced this movie. I was about 13 at the time, and was a Richard Pryor fan. However, I HATED this idea. HATED IT. All of my friends felt the same. Pryor was very popular back then, but nobody wanted this film. It was stupid. This shit movie, and others like it, were the reason this genre was never taken seriously. It wasn't until X-Men and Batman Begins, that these movies became great and built a huge following.

  • @kali3665

You know, if they had just let Richard Pryor GO, they might have had something great. It MIGHT have worked. But he was muzzled - partly because he was trying to change his image after his freebasing accident - and the limited budget didn't help.
Nor did the Salkinds throwing Margot Kidder out the door due to her continued support of Richard Donner. Who would have been better than THIS crap. Richard Lester tried to make Superman a comedy - normally his strong suit - and it doesn't work. It didn't work when the George Reeves series tried it (the Martian and that f*cking burro - really, guys?), and it certainly doesn't work here.
The Clark vs Superman fight was fantastic, though. And Robert Vaughn actually makes a good villain if you interpret it more as a proto-post Crisis Luthor. Like Luthor became for a while in the comics, he is definitely a psychopath here, one convinced he deserves everything he goes after no matter what he has to do (or rather what his minions have to do) to get it. Everyone else is pretty much wasted.
"I asked you to kill Superman, and you couldn't even do that one simple thing." THAT is cold, and, as always, Robert Vaughn sells it. He, really, is the bright spot of this otherwise wasted opportunity - the first and only time Superman had a truly vicious enemy in the Reeve series other than General Zod.

For anybody curious, I can recommend the fan-edit "Superman Redeemed", if you can find it. It is a combination of Superman III and Superman IV. It's not a miracle but it's a decent watch that try to keep the best of both movies! (but there's also a scene from Superman II, and it's kind smart in how it helped move the plot forward).

It was more sitcom-like than a real movie, it also was a bit more a kid-movie for much of it (save for the super-computer and cyborg).
I actually think that the actors (particularly Christopher Reeve and Robert Vaughn) made the most of it, and Richard Pryor did a good job in keeping it comedic and campy, hence why I think it's more a 'sitcom/kid's movie' hybrid film than a true Superman film. The first and second ones were truly far less comedic and while suitable for kids, were not true kids movie in the sense.
