Someone has done this already I’m sure but the I can’t help but think about your essay in terms of the film history of Superman. Superman the Movie through Superman 3 really tells that Hero Inside of us story. But the beyond s@!t Superman 4 goes back to this story as Clark being the disguise. Then Superman Returns Clark seems to be once again the disguise. Up to the 2000s version where it seems like there trying to tell that Hero on all of us story again but the execution is lacking.

I think the death of Jonathan Kent is the most important part of the film ... His death from a heart attack shows Clark that no matter how strong he is, he cannot save everyone ...
The emotional moments are where the movie truly shines IMO. No scenes have touched me more in film history than Jonathan's death and Superman being able to save Lois from an earthquake.
"All the powers I have and I couldn't save him." That moment is when the humanity of a character many label godlike is established in this great film.

@@alexandrefrauches132Still Superman and Captain America had their differences as well, Steve is a war soldier who his problems are related to not adapting into the future, while Superman is the everyman with problems the everyman has (kinda like Spider-Man), but both having the sincerity and heart that define them.

@@paulpolpiboon9535 I can't speak of the 40's but being born in the 70's and growing up in the 80's, Batman being an unstoppable force wasn't a thing until Miller's book. Which started as an imaginary novel (what if?) and now has snowballed into the fan boy's truth. The Adam West shadow still loomed large into the 70's and early 80's, his Batman being represented in the Super Friends and Super Powers cartoons (he did the voice in that one.) The Michael Keaton Batman film in '89 pretty much cemented the Miller version. Sooo...

In my humble opinion:
To date, no one has portrayed a better Superman. This is something the Snyder films lack: heart ❤️ The producers can try to spruce up the current version with all the 3D CGI they can muster but the simple fact is this: you can’t polish a turd of a tale with VFX.

Grant Morrison put it best when he said that Superman is the fulfillment of the ideas of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola: That mankind is a species of imitators. We look at birds and create airplanes to fly. We create submarines to go underwater. What we can imagine, we chase after and aspire to, so why not imagine a character who represents the best of everything we could become?
Superman: The Movie isn't just a great superhero movie, but a great film in general. The moments that produce emotion don't fill forced, but very natural by the acting and soundtrack.
This movie works because it remembers superman's ultimate enemy is cynicism. I rewatched it a few days ago and there was a scene I had forgotten about that hit me hard. It's right after superman first appears and saves lois and the helicopter. Clark is watching a news broadcast about the incident on the street and someone makes a comment like "a flying man huh...that'll be the day." Clark looks at him and replies "I dont know. You might be surprised." Everytime I read a superman comic or watch a movie I always find it sad that we cant seem to trust people. I find it sad that we cant even imagine a better world sometimes. I find it sad That we're constantly hoping for the best and find ourselves let down over and over again. It really breaks my heart. And yet that's why I keep coming back to superman. Christopher Reeve was right. People are attracted to the character because they are seeking a friend. Superman is the one guy you can trust. I think that's the reason man of steel angered me so much. The movie was marketed all around superman being a symbol of hope and yet that's not what it was. Snyder instead tried to Make it a "deconstruction" of the character. So when I went in expecting a movie about a nice friendly guy saving the world and doing the impossible I instead got a dark and bleak movie filled with death aand destruction and a cold and emotionless superman ultimately failing. It felt like I was punched in the gut.

I love you. Do you trust me enough to be uplifted and encouraged from the warmth and affection from a stranger? I wholeheartedly understand the sentiment about how we live in a world that we can't seem to trust people. Unfortunately, it is something we have to live with in an imperfect world. I believe that spirituality has a large part in how people treat eachother, regardless of what one's beliefs are. When we humble ourselves to the idea that there is something greater than ourselves, then we can look at each other as equals and treat each other with kindness. Using the Christ allegory from the Superman movies, Jesus himself summed it up nicely admonishing that the things we want people to do to us, we must do to them. I believe that all humans are born with the desire to do good and be good. And as we grow older I believe the majority hold onto that, but because of lack of trust and many other reasons, they withhold it, imagining that only people they know and trust deserve their love. I love people, aside from a small group of individuals that have made a conscious choice to do wrong. There's a difference between an evil doer that is prone to badness, but wants to love, and an evil doer that dismisses love and enjoys badness.
My hope is that this message brings you some hope that there is a better life available. Hope is so important. Without it there is emptiness. I had an unfortunate childhood. You can imagine the issues of trust one could have when their entire childhood was stripped away from them. The one thing that helped me through is learning how to forgive. The burdens I felt gradually lifted and brought peace. Does that make sense? I don't know how I stumbled on your comment and why I decided to watch an essay about a Superman movie, but here we are. There is always hope.

I'll say this about this movie. Every single day since I was a little kid I've tried to be a little better at something and it's always been because of Superman.
As a kid, Superman was my moral compass. This movie had a lot to do with that.
So true. I wish kids today would be doing the same as we did when we were kids. Today they visualize it as boring and uncool to have mortals.
And my friends, that's why even after 42 years, Donner's Superman resonates.
I was lucky enough to see this on the 40th anniversary in a movie theater... I dragged my adult kids along, and they were not impressed... but I loved every minute. I had teary eyes through most of it.
@@tonebone7449 i went too for the 40th anniversary, but I went alone. I didn't want to put my family through this because I wanted to enjoy it and not having to deal with long faces and bad attitude. Today's kids wouldn't understand or appreciate this kind of movie at all. Their attention span is too short. Something needs to happen every five seconds or they will lose interest.
Especially in this day and age, Superman is always one of the figures that's going to have a place in a lot of people's hearts. And it's a shame no one has brought it to life quite like this film did.

No matter how many superhero movies that have been over the years, Richard Donner’s Superman will always remain the one that started it all. Burton’s Batman, Raimi’s Spider-Man, hell the entire MCU would not be possible without this movie. It’s not perfect, but it remains one of the gold standards of the these films. Christopher Reeve was an amazing Superman and he will always be missed. Your Superman videos always gets to the core of the character and they’re always filled with heart. Great video once again and very much looking forward to Darecember.
Also, I was wondering if you’ve seen the Richard Donner Cut of Superman II since you said Superman II (theatrical cut) was a mixed bag. I thought it was pretty good and an improvement on the theatrical version.
Thanks! I've seen the Donner Cut but it's been years so I don't remember a ton of the differences. I think it's better but not perfect.
@@MattDraper The original 1978 Superman film is a classic. Christopher Reeve is the best Superman ever. The story of this film was never about superheroes and action, it's the introspective story of an alien immigrant finding himself on the planet earth. The sequels are superficial and worthless, however. Superman 2 is close to being good quality-wise, but not as good as the first. Superman 3 is nasty whilst watching Superman 4 is like living in 2020

I'm glad that you talked about Superman being the Everyman. Or rather, Clark Kent is the Everyman. His parents are farmers, he had a gang of best friends as a kid, he works in the big city, he's got a regular job, he crushes on his coworker, he likes cheeseburgers and movies, and his best friend right now is a cold rich kid who warms up under his friendship.
Just like the movie itself, this video made me smile, filled me with hope, and made me shed more than a few tears. I’d say you did the film justice

I'd say Reeve is my favourite live action Superman and Tim Daly is my favourite Superman voice. I like George Newbern's performances as him in the animated Justice League show, the Injustice games and animated films but watching Superman the Animated Series as a kid made me associate Tim Daly with Superman.
I've always said it and I'll keep saying it: Marvel is relatable. DC is aspirational.
Marvel's cinematic universe works because its heroes, for the most part, are largely generic, interchangeable and its their personal lives and their day-to-day people troubles, despite their powers, that makes their world, their movies, their shows and their comics fun for audiences. Marvel heroes powers don't bring about the trouble they face, its their flaws as humans that is largely the center of the comic line's biggest and most successful stories. Marvel characters are characters you can relate to coz they have the same problems we do, they just have superhero jobs on top of it. It's a world where being a superhero is a job, but the soap-opera we watch is their personal lives and relationships at the workplace. It's easy to have all those people in the same universe.
DC is aspirational. DC heroes are the heroes you WANT to be, the heroes you'd wish humanity to look to as examples, the heroes who deal with problems that are bigger than the world and in dealing with those problems they show us how to deal with our everyday issues. The problem DC heroes face are the RESULT of the fact that they're super-powered and the problems that challenge them - as people - are always super-powered, bigger than all of us, and put our real world problems in their place as petty squabbles. It's a world where being a superhero is a responsibility, not a job, and what they do as superheroes holds a mirror up to what we do as people in our real world. A world where the state of the world is reflected by the hero in it - Metropolis is a golden age city because of Superman, Gotham is a hellscape because of Batman etc etc. These characters don't go together because its hard to picture a world where all these massive aspirational stories come together and not clash horribly. It's for that reason the best Justice League content is always slightly tongue-in-cheek and very, very, very pulpy.
It's astonishing to me that DC doesn't seem to realize this or doesn't seem to care. Superman doesn't need to don a heavy cape. He doesn't need to be unsure or unconfident or toil and be tortured or be an emotional wreck or a killer. Superman's job as an aspirational character is to see someone who experiences true joy from helping people, who cannot be fazed by the hardship he experiences, he's the guy who gives it all to save the world and - when he's broken and bloody and a wreck - still turns to the people watching and smiles - GENUINELY SMILES - because he's warmed by the knowledge that he made a difference. Superman should be charming, funny, unflappable, disarmingly warm, basically everything Chris Evans realized in his portrayal as Captain America particularly in the later films where he realized that he needed to stand for something that his name no longer did.
When I watch or read Marvel, I want to know what's going to happen next in their relationships amid the next big distracting obstacle they have to overcome. You're invested in their story like you're invested in the characters of any soap opera. Iron Man is not a role-model, pretty much nobody is a role model in Marvel except some versions of Captain America and nearly all versions of Spider-Man.
When I watch or read DC, I want Superman to show me how to find my own sense of happiness and purpose and to keep that smile on my face, I want Batman to show me how to turn obsession into a force for change and good, I want Green Lantern to show me that nothing is impossible as long as I can master fear, I want Dr Fate to show me that sacrificing one's own life and identity so you can make a difference for others is a noble cause etc etc etc.
I don't know why DC doesn't realize this, but until they do they will continue to drown us with terrible, terrible films and misguided content that tries to appeal to the worst in our human nature rather than our best. The closest they may have come to this was SHAZAM and BIRDS OF PREY and maybe the first half of the first WONDER WOMAN movie, but that's it. The rest is just....self-pitying pornography for the apathetic and the dissolute as far as I'm concerned.
Hey Matt. I'm going to be brutally honest and share something with you.
2020, as is for most everyone else, has sucked. Monumentally sucked. I have many people tell almost everyday that it's becoming increasingly harder to smile and be hopeful. I wake up and hear on the TV why X and Y groups are at each other's throats, how scared we should be for the future, or that another tragic event / accident / natural disaster has occured in the world. Everyday I'm so anxious, that sometimes normal task become difficult to start or even finish. The only respites I get are when I'm writing, reading or listening to music. BUT something that I routinely look forward to is your videos, especially lately. When I got finished with this video, I don't know why but I felt moved almost to tears. Whatever the case is, I had the most soothing calm wash over me for the first time in a long time.
Now I didn't tell you this to depress or make you worried about me or my mental health, I'm ok. I just sincerely wanted to say thank you for continuing to make these videos. You've been keeping me and so many countless others entertained during these hard times. This video and the topic it covered are what people these days need more of. One of the best superhero movies of all time!
I am just happy that some one took the time to explain the concept of Superman, in detail. So that main stream audiences can understand what makes the character great, long lasting, and enduring. I have tried explaining this same message to friends and Piers for years. yet they keep make their own conceptionalized version of Superman rather than what the symbolism of the character means as a whole. It is Frustrating to say the least.

The ending of the movie is actually my favorite part. Superman is confronted with the harsh reality, and cynicism that film in the 70s tried to capture; and only Superman can defy reality and Win.
This movie and this video got me all teary eyed.
This movie is my all time favorite movie. It has such a magical charm that I honestly can't find in any other movie. Maybe that has to do with me growing up with it, or rediscovering my love for the film during a difficult period of my life. Rewatching this movie on my birthday with my friends and seeing them be captivated by this film really made me smile. It's honestly a perfect movie to me. Great analysis, loved every minute of it.
The best thing about humanity dreaming up heroes like Superman is the fact that we have our inner heroes inside us waiting to be fulfilled.
This movie just understands Superman, his character, and what he stands for. It also shows that Zack Snyder doesn't understand Superman at all. It makes me feel sad that people want Zack Snyder's interpretation of Superman, instead of the true Superman. The world needs Superman, now more than ever.

Absolutely wonderful analysis of both Superman the Movie and Superman in general. It's refreshing to see someone who understands the concept and doesn't just write off the character as too good to be true or boring due to the altruism of the character. That's the appeal of Superman to me, to imagine to be the best person you could possibly be in all aspects of life. I stumbled upon this channel a few weeks ago and I've been impressed with everything I've seen. Keep up the great work, I'll keep watching.

What I always found funny about the Gene Hackman Lex Luthor was him being in denial about his baldness. All other Luthors embrace their lack of hair but the Hackman version didn't and wore a wig.
Luthor wears the wig to diguse his humanity. It's a dark reflection of superman wearing glasses to protect his identity. One man considers himself superior to everyone and wants to hide any sign of percieved 'imperfection,' and the other has powers beyond any normal human being but hides them because he doesnt want to put himself on a pedestal.
This picture is being screened at the Royal Albert Hall, London on 16 July 2021. The film will be screened with a live orchestra performing the films score.
Wonderful deconstruction of the film, its hero, and supporting cast. Reeve's performance resonates today and was SO well done that I truly believed that if anyone could conquer their ailments it would be Christopher Reeve (our Superman) to rise and walk again. Sadly that was not the case. But he continued to inspire while confined to a wheelchair and still does after his passing. Hopefully DC can find a talented writer and creative team to bring our original superhero back to prominence.
Superman: The Movie always put me to sleep as a kid. Superman II is where it's at.

I love this and its sequel 🔥🔥 however the ideal superman 2 would be to combine what works from the Lester cut and what works in the Donner cut into one movie.

Bravo, excellent look at one of my favorite movies. It's hard to explain how much it meant to me as a child when I first saw the movie poster; "you'll believe a man can fly" sounds so simple, so understated, but I still smile and feel hopeful whenever I see the image. Christopher Reeve is and always will be Superman to me.

Superman as you greatly explain is the hope that guide us to be our better selves and I truly believe it because my father rest in peace was a big fan of him and to me he will always be an example of what a great human being must be even though I'm still not close to be it.

Will you do a review on Tom Mankiewicz's cancelled Batman movie? It was gonna star either Pierce Brosnan, Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, or Bill Murray as Batman, Michael J. Fox as Robin, and David Bowie as the Joker.
The greatest thing about his movie is the creativity. Everything about Krypton was incredible. Technology and architecture based on crystals. Clothes that glowed with a faint light. It FELT alien and otherworldly. Look at Krypton in MoS, and it looks like every generic sci-fi kitbash.

This was fantastic. I'd really like to hear your thoughts on Superman Returns, which is a quite thoughtful and beautiful movie. Not just a love letter to the character - it's a love letter to humanity. John Ottman's score, adapted from John Williams' original, is one of the most magical soundtracks ever created (seriously - search RUclips for the track _How Could You Leave Us?_ - which plays as Routh and Bosworth fly over the Metropolis nightscape).

I kinda disagree with the claim that superman reversing time is him accepting his human side.
I think it's the opposite actually. In other words, him reversing time to impose his will on the world is him asserting his godhood.
The movie comments on failure and tragedy being unavoidable: krypton blows up, clark's dad dies, and finally Lois' death.
This final tragedy of losing Lois pushes clark to defy his father's limitations and reform the timeline to something that he judges to be right.
This is god(meta)-level feat.
