    I had a thyroidectomy in November 2019. I feel so much better. My hair is noticably thicker and my nails are strong and grow quicker. My hair and nails were so brittle and short when I had an overactive thyroid. I also have to get 8-9 hours sleep a night now, I go to bed earlier but the quality of sleep is so much better. I'm more mindful of my energy levels but I definitely feel 100 time better than before surgery. I lost loads of weight when I was ill but haven't put weight on at all really since the surgery. I take a magnesium supplement daily before bed. It helps balance hormones and has helped me with my migraines.

    I have Graves', three thyroid ops to deal with it over the years, and a lot of the same sorts of issues, but the experience is surprisingly different (so I get acne, sleep issues, headaches, bloating, snappy etc, but I get them at different times and in different ways). On the acne front I found the only way was killing the bacteria. One day I was shaving, and ran out of regular soap so washed my face with Carex (a triclosan based handwash) and the effect was near miraculous, few weeks later and one bottle of Carex and it was gone after over a decade and lots of other tries, later case of leg acne (it is a thing, probably staph Aureus not Acne Vulgaris) required hibiscrub to get rid of it (the wash surgeons use to clean them and their patients before surgery, it was a hard thing to kill, and I had to repeat it a few months later when it returned). I hope that is helpful for someone, about the only bit I've really won at. My skin is not stunning, but at least it doesn't have acne anywhere now.

    And i have same problem 3 years already and i am just thinking to have an operation because i would like to have a baby. I do understand that its very personal and private topic, but i would really appreciate if you will share with us this experience. I would like to have IVF after surgery. But I read that there is many risks as well!

    I had a thyroidectomy it took two surgery almost been a month now from my last procedure! I have had my ups and downs but like you said I feel so much better I had thyroid cancer stage 2 uh scary but thank god I’m here with my family ! One down side is that I have gained 8 pounds it’s hard I was on keto before I was diagnosed so all the weight came back tough but my only worry is if I keep going up it’s kinda disturbing because I am fasting due to our holy month of Ramadan . Hopefully it’s temporary I don’t want to stress myself it’s been hard enough. Also vitamin d + calcium has been a lifesaver I haven’t been this energised in a long time there is light at the end of the tunnel as they say! After addressing my anemia (partly from surgery) with a heme iron supplement (I am a vegetarian but the normal supplements were taking 4 months to raise my iron 7 % over anemia, too slow) for a few weeks, I have more energy and find myself waking after less sleep. • @51monw
      @51monw 3 года назад +2

      You have to control Graves' somehow. I did drug titration, surgery, titration, block and replace, surgery, surgery over the last 30 years. For me the control that worked best was block and replace, but I am clearly a difficult case. Doing it all again, knowing what I know now about me, I would have stuck with the initial antithyroid drug titration regime even though it requires quite a bit of maintenance as long as possible, and switched to block and replace if/when that stopped working well, but many women want babies and the drugs aren't ideal for that. The drugs have their own issues, but they do permit changing your mind later, the possibility of future cures or even remission. Was my surgery worth it, the first one was, the other two have been a pain, and you don't get to choose which outcome you get.

      The same issues happened to me too…. 20 lb weight gain, thyroid eye disease and worse insomnia. I wish I never did the surgery and still had graves.

      I agree it's the worst thing to happen to me as well. I had a tiny nodule on my thyroid so they removed my whole thyroid and my life is so horrible now I had to quit my job because of depression and anxiety plus fatigue and weight gain. And hair is really thin and the radioactive iodine has caused my mouth to be so dry it's affecting my teeth. My teeth and hair were my best qualities. Plus I have heart problems now from the medication so it just seems like an unfair trade. My little nodule didn't cause me no symptoms or problems. I wonder why they would do this to me but I think I know. They need some way to make money.

    Post OP 3 years. For anyone who has had their thyroid removed, dealing with weight loss, hair loss, mood swings, tiredness. Try this:
    Cut back on sugars and processed carbs
    Drink an alkaline tea at night to balance the high levels of acid that we have that is a big reason that we now get reflux and hair loss
    Do exercises but not too much cardio. Our hearts have had a lot of strain when we had Graves/overactive Thyroids, and cardio makes you more hungry and so we crave more sugar and carbs
    Try a 8 hour eating period in a day with a 16 hour break from solid food. So I’ll have my last meal at 8PM and have my first meal at 12PM. Please speak to your doctors about these tips before going ahead with them, but they definitely have helped me!
