Thyroidectomy: 5 things every patient without a thyroid should know

  • A list of 5 things that every thyroidectomy patient should know. Check out these BEFORE you get your thyroid removed surgically. Also applies to those with hemi thyroidectomy.
The supplement I mentioned in this video can be found here (it helps levo/Synthroid work better): www.restartmed.com/product/t3...
If you have had your thyroid removed with a thyroidectomy then there are 5 VERY important things that YOU should know!
Once your thyroid is removed your body is changed forever and if you don't understand what that means for you then you may end up feeling poorly or symptomatic for a long time.
This information ALSO applies to those people who have had their thyroid damaged from radioactive iodine ablation (by the way) and also those people who have had only HALF of their thyroid removed through something called a hemithyroidectomy.
Here are 5 things to know if your thyroid has been removed:
    #1. You are now HYPOTHYROID.
It doesn't matter WHY your thyroid was removed but once it has been removed you are now effectively and functionally HYPOTHYROID. This means that ALL of the information I talk about (directed at hypothyroidism) also applies to YOU!
#2. T4 isn't enough by itself for you.
Medical research has shown that T4 (such as Synthroid or levothyroxine) is not enough to NORMALIZE thyroid function in people who have had their thyroid removed.
#3. You will probably gain weight and weight loss will be very difficult.
On average, people who have had their thyroid removed gain 20 pounds. In addition, weight loss is more difficult afterward.
#4. Thyroid supplements CAN and should be used.
There is still a place for thyroid supplements (which can be helpful) whether you have a thyroid or not!
#5. You will be on medication for LIFE.
Once your thyroid is removed you will be on thyroid medication for the rest of your life! The only exception is if you've had half of your thyroid removed (it isn't always necessary in this case).

I feel so punked by my endocrinologist who sent me for thyroidectomy 20 years ago, put me on synthroid, saw me not function and gain 100 lbs. His instructions were to use less salt, get on a grain "pyramid" diet and "walk'. My brain barely functioned as a wife, mother, employee. I found a integrative health office, my first appointment I was near hysterical. Would they also not believe me and tell me that "everything was normal"? My thyroid antibodies were 199.000. Inflammation through the roof. I am now on T3/T4 porcine meds. My brain works better but trying to lose the weight has not worked. I'm sickened by the thought of these offices continuing to hoodoo their patience and victim shaming their patients. Thank you for your series and patient education.

I hope you got this taken care of but I couldn't help but notice your comment about your Dr telling you to be on a grain diet. Hopefully you know by now that no one should ever recommend a grain diet anymore. I too had my thyroid removed and I too used to believe I was supposed to eat low fat and high grain diet. Not the case ! eat a high fat moderate protein and moderate healthy carbs only from green vegetables. Alternatively, if that doesn't work for you like it did and still does for me you can eat a carnivore diet. Humans are not meant to eat grains ! hope all is well.

I gained weight before my thyroidectomy. The doctors had excused my weight gain as a nursing mother and eating more to nurse. It was total BS. I gained 100 pounds in two and a half years. I went in for my routine OB/GYN appointment in November of 1994. At the appointment they found an issue with my urine and decided I needed to have more testing. I had a tumor on my thyroid. I was sent to an endocrinologist for a biopsy. They couldn't tell if it was benign or malignant. They scheduled surgery for January 1995. It ended up that I had thyroid cancer. I am sure if they had listened to me in regards to my weight gain it wouldn't have become cancerous. I am 29 years out from my thyroidectomy and I'm on levothyroxine. I have had struggles ever since. I'm tired most days. I also haven't been able to lose all the weight. To top it all off I gained another 60 pounds from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome after menopause. I ended up in surgery for a full hysterectomy due to bleeding and polyps in my uterus. I met with a dietician and was able to lose 60 pounds with a special diet of turkey, chicken, fish, veggies, and fruit. I was so miserable that it destroyed my physical relationship with my husband. It wasn't the only thing that caused our relationship to fall apart. He was abusive and neglectful of me and our children. Yep, my life pretty well sucked big time. My husband had an affair to top it all off and walked out almost 3 years ago. He cheated because his rule was you owe me sex when I want it. I finally filed for a divorce last November. He is dragging it out and making my life a living hell. I just don't get why he can leave to figure out his life, but I'm not allowed to move on with mine. He doesn't want to be a husband and father, but he doesn't want to give up what he thinks he owns.

I had mine removed 10 years ago and my T3 levels have been ok with only taking Levothyrox, and then Tcaps (due to a change of excipients in levothyrox in France, i had a really bad reaction to the new version like a few millions of people in France). I've never had to supplements in vitamins to help with T4 and T3 activation, but I think it's due to a plant based and very healthy balanced diet, and I didn't gain weight either. I blood test every 3-6 months and I am usually stable on my TSH T3 T4 levels. if TSH moves i adjust my levotyroxine intake. I had a hard time being on the right dosage at first cause my doctor would put me on 100mcg but if it was too low (meaning my TSH was too high) he would put me on 125mcg because levothyroxine only does 25 increase or decrease in dosage.. so I would end up being too high (meaning TSH was too low) I then cut 25mcg tablets in half so i would take 112mcg but again it was too high. so I ended up doing 100mcg for 2 days sometimes 3 and then one 112mcg and so on. and that stabilised my TSH. I came up with that system on my own because my family doctor didnt know better (he can prescribe and has a basic understanding of endocrinology but isn't an endocrinologist) and the few endocrinologists I've seen were completely useless, gasliting, patronising, and really not educated at ALL about new research and ways to treat thyroid's illnesses (they are often more knowledgeable about diabetes). So my takaway is to read a lot (and not believe everything you hear or read either, just make sure a lot of studies corroborates with each other, and ALWAYS keep in mind that everyone has a different metabolism and what applies and works with me might not with you. One thing you also need to remember, and it was not my doctor telling me but when i mentioned it he said that was true, is that when you gain weight, you need to increase your levothyroxine intake (it makes sense as most meds work that way too) so if your TSH was stable when you weighted 160 pounds for instance, but you gained 30 since, chances are that you aren't taking enough levothyroxine, so please go blood test and see if your dosage is enough (and that goes both ways, if you lose. weight then you probably have to reduce your dosage).
Don't forget to eat as healthy as you can and if you can't do take supplements, try to walk or power walk at least 30mn a day, hydrate, and always take your levothyroxine in the morning 30mn before eating or drinking coffee and avoid grapefruit at least for 4h after taking your meds.

Hi Dr Childs, thank you so much for your video. I am in a remote Australia town and the closest thing to medical help with thyroid problems is a Gp or a 14hr round trip drive. I have my thyroid completely removed 10 years ago against my better judgment, I now think it was not necessary. As soon as it was removed I started gaining about 2 kg per week (4lbs), it was alarming as I wasn’t overweight and walking every day. This went on till I was just over 100kg (202pounds) after a starting weight of 75kg (165lbs). My doctor said my levels were exactly right but I was feeling terrible. I made the trip to the city to see an endroconologist and he told me the same and that I just needed to excercise more and eat less. I now find that if I eat more that 1000 calories a day my weight balloons. It is so hard to even get proper nutrition with such a low intake. I hope that your supplements are availed to Australia as I’m desperate. A spine infection has made me not be able to exercise as much in the last year and I can see my weight creeping up again. I eat less that my 6 year old granddaughter, I’m 68. Thank you for reading this if you have time.

The chiropractor I saw would adjust me, but kept coming out; it wouldn’t stick. The chiropractor told me I was probably still hypothyroid, even on the synthroid. I was taking . I started researching and found Mary Shomons book which explained about the T3. This was decades ago. I was lucky to find an integrative physician about an hour from me who put me on the T3 in addition to T4. My pelvis
went into alignment and never went out since. It’s been a real pain all these years to try and find functional medicine doctors or any doctor who understands and prescribes T3. Lucky for me I was willing to research and travel to find someone.

Agree 💯 I find your posts really helpful. Been dealing with hypo for more than 15 years (no thyroid). I do however think that those who've had a removal of Thyca, do need to be put in a different basket - at least for the few years after dx. Personally, I was purposely kept hypo to prevent a reoccurrence and only recently was "allowed" to lower the Synthroid and add Liothyronine. This has helped. However, the weight gain that ensued after TT and RAI was easily 20 lbs and menopause added an other big number - another 20lbs.. I will watch your video about weight loss next!

Thank you for the video! My thyroid t4 to t3 conversion was perfect before I had 2 thyrogen injections in February 2019. I have gained 7 pounds immediately after the thyrogen injections, and an additional 13 pounds after. And I’m now insulin resistant. I went on a stringent diet and gained weight regardless. Experienced extreme fatigue over the last 9 months. Switching from levothyroxine to Tirosint was helpful but I still take liothyronine for T3. Still suffer from fatigue, brain fog, and inability to lose weight.

hey Andrea, Sorry for youre loss. I'm Jim, from Belgium, important! I had a full thyroidectomie in 2011 and a radio-active cure. i sufferd from fatique, weight gaine and hypoparatyroidism, it almost killed me. several years later i found a doctor that prescribed T3 supplement, until august2021. it doesn't exist anymore in Belgium nor Europe. i try everything. sinds september 2021 i surched for other solutions and i found KETO-genetic diet. this was a relief for me, i also need calcium and alfa leo, supplements for the bone. i found out during keto that my kidneys, liver, bowl, and dygestion was insufficient workinig, so poor digestion, constipation, bloting. it is all gone now. i've lost 20pnd in 5months, i do cycling, walking, my brain is working again, altough i feel tired iff there is no sun. and those days whe have many in Belgium. and temperature changes a lot here.

I had my thyroid completely removed 10 years ago and have always just been on Synthroid anywhere between 0.175 to .225. I had a benign tumor that was extremely vascular and growing quickly, they couldn't tell if it was cancerous so they rushed me in. I ended up in the trauma unit for 5 days after surgery, whole list of problems occurred hours after surgery. I do not suffer weight gain whatsoever and never have, its the opposite for me where i have issues keeping my weight. They have never sent me for a T3 test, its always a T4 blood test. I now am told I have high calcium and my doctor is concerned about it. He also tells me there is a chemical being produced from my brain because of the absence of a thyroid and it is producing too much of it. He says this chemical can effect my heart rhythm. Kinda freaking out now. What i have noticed throughout the years that i will suffer EXTREME chill to the point it feels like a seizure, i can feel it coming on out of nowhere and when it happens, im running for the hot hot shower and stay im there for at least 30 minutes until im comfortable to get out. This happens at least once every 3 months ish. Hope you can give me some insight.

I suffered 10 yrs already of hypothyroidism, so I know levothyroxine don't fully work, plus the changing of dosage every month or two. Luckily, I got hyperthyroidism as well the last year and lost 60 lbs. I can manage gaining 20 lbs back but a lifetime of depression, fatigue, foggy head...nope, I ain't doin' it.

I had the surgery in 1995, almost 30 years ago at age 17 and I wish I would’ve known more because I wouldn’t have gotten it. It has been a long nightmare that got worse after having children and now with age. I gained 170 lbs 20 years ago during my pregnancy and no matter what I do I can’t lose weight. I’ve always had a relatively healthy diet and would workout 4/5 days a week for an hour a day since I was a teenager. Now, I’m in so much pain from bone on bone knee pain caused by chronic inflammation caused by insufficient thyroid levels it’s hard to exercise like I use to.
I would advise anyone to try other alternatives and/or doctors before getting a surgery that can be just as bad as the condition it’s treating except it’s a long drawn out deterioration of health that breaks down the body over time.
Good luck and I wish you the best!

I had my thyroid removed in 2010 via radiation therapy (I had cancer markers and was a thyper/ Graves/ hashimotos thyroid patient) I was diagnosed with thyper thyroid when I was 10 (1999) at a time when thyroid disease was not widely tested for or thought of outside of Middle aged or adult women (most common) and men. I was one of the youngest people in the world with my diagnosis. I had my thyroid removed, again, in 2010. Since then I have gone through a lot. I almost died after going two years without my levo. And had a few scares since. Now, it only takes a few days to a week for me to get really sick of I don't have my thyroid meds. Loss of cognitive function, seizures, and pericardial effusion. Also after my thyroid removal (yes it was radiation but there is NO thyroid there) I never gained weight. I've been trying. I was so small when I was hyper, but even having no thyroid I've never gotten to 110lbs. That's my goal. I want to donate blood. I just don't understand how I can be not just hypo, but no thyroid and still can't gain weight even with normal thyroid levels. I eat, a lot, I work out (mostly at work, I'm a chef) but I just can't gain weight.

It can spread to other areas if not removed. You don’t want to have to remove cancer twice if left in and it spreads to lymph nodes or brain or lungs. You are probably gaining weight because of the thyroid not functioning right. My thyroid cancer caused my tpo to be at 900 and it’s supposed to be 9 or lower. I was 40lbs underweight. So cancer on your thyroid can affect a lot.

Very very good and educational video! Thank you! I had my thyroid and parathyroids removed back in 2011 after a thyroid storm that almost killed me. I was born with hypothyroidism and it was very hard to get my levels to a good place so when I ended up in that thyroid storm it swelled up so much it cut off my arteries and airway so I was rushed into surgery to remove my thyroid. Unfortunately the surgeon cut straight thru my airway and cut my vocal chords in half paralyzing them shut so when I woke up from surgery I couldn't breathe and they had to do a bedside tracheostomy on me. It was a nightmare and I'm still traumatized. My question tho is I'm 27 weeks pregnant with my first baby and my doctor wants me to take supplements, but I don't know which ones are safe while pregnant so any information you could give me would be so amazing ❤ thank you for everything you do to help people like me!

Not many people talk about partial thyroidectomy.
I had one side removed from hyperthyroidism due to thyroid nodule which overproduced hormones. I lost about 30lbs quickly and extreme headaches and fatigue so debilitating and exhausting. I would be in bed at 7pm every night so i could work the next day.I had to lay a certain way in bed so i could breathe as the nodules were closing my windpipe which gave me some anxiety. It felt like I was being choked to death.😢
After fine needle biopsy ruled out cancer and had surgery. There was no follow up testing was done after surgery to monitor my thyroid levels but after going to a different doxtor and seeing holistic pharmacist that worked with this doctor I was put on levothyroxine.
But now I find the older Im getting the more I have to lower my dose.

    • @annaletticks5995
      @annaletticks5995 5 месяцев назад

@kikakukeko Get your levels tested BEFORE the surgery date. Insist on it. Then make sure your doctor monitors your levels 6 weeks maximum time to test after surgery. I can't stress that enough. My levels dramatically dropped, I was so exhausted I couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without having to rest half way up. I was underweight and only 37 years old then but, within a month after surgery I gained 15 lbs and didn't change my eating habits. My body stored every calorie. I felt so horrible and my family doctor could care less (specialist did the surgery)
Family doctor said he wouldn't treat subclinical levels- I didn't know what my levels were before and after...DEMAND they tell you.
In the end, I was started on thyroid meds with my pharmacist advocating for me after getting my thyroid levels bloodwork to review.
Almost 20 years later and I'm losing weight from being overweight for most of those years.
I'm exercising daily, getting fresh air, cut back on morning coffee routine so doesn't interfere with small dose of thyroid meds. Stay hydrated with water flushing your system. Cut back on junk food/processed foods, cheese and most dairy and meat portions. Dont evening binge eat! You still need meat for optimal health, tried no meat and ran into low b12 and low iron issues. Within a week of introducing meat I felt way better just smaller portions. You should be eating way more vegetables and fruits than meat. I eat white jasmine rice, white bread versus grain breads and brown rice.
I can't drink alcohol, physically it makes me have heartburn and brings on sinus allergies, so not worth it. It never bothered me a few years ago, which is strange.
AVOID COFFEE WITHIN 1-2 hours after taking your meds, or try taking meds at night on an empty stomach with plain water.
      Hope this helps.

I have a Endocrinologist who isn't forcing me into surgery. He has gotten my T3& T4 within normal parameters finally. I finally feel well enough to try exercising to loose weight. I have gained 30 lbs in the past 2 years. I really couldn't afford to gain anymore before getting off this extra weight. The cancerous nodule us on my left side he said that I could get away with just having that out probably depending on the thyroid surgeon. He did a biopsy 3 months ago and is doing #2 on July 22nd in his office. He stated that he only trusts his pathology team. He mentioned that I could go without surgery if I agree to get a biopsy every 3 months to check for any changes. I expressed my concerns to him about the possible heart complications from my left ventricular heart damage. Mentally I'm not stong enough to go through the prolonged suffering. I’m on Thyroxine 100mg tablets for the rest of my life after having the thyroidectomy surgery. I have gained over 10kilos and having major fatigue issues. Doctor doesn’t suggest anything else apart from the tablet I’m already taking. What else can I take to boost and what sort of iodine stuff I should be taking ? I’m extremely depressed with my current situation and weight gain and fatigue has played a major part a

I’m due to have my thyroid removed 8/3. I’m canceling the surgery. The reason they want to take my thyroid is because my EP specialist (Cardiologist) has stated that the reason I have tachycardia is because of my thyroid despite the fact, I’m either hypo or hyper thyroid. My endocrinologist is great, and she has fought it the entire way, stating that taking my thyroid is not going to suddenly relieve the tachycardia.
Granted, I do have a goiter and nachos and there are times where it is bothers him for me the feeling of compression in my throat but I don’t know if it’s to the point that I need to have it entirely removed and especially if it isn’t going to erase the tachycardia as the EP specialist claims I have been on the fence for a long time about having this surgery. Even the surgeon told me that it isn’t going to fix the tachycardia and if he removes it it will strictly be based on if it’s bothersome to me. I am very concerned about life after a thyroid as I struggle as it is with MS. I had an FNA. Pathology came back clean I do have what’s called a TIRAD 5 module but my endocrinologist still does not believe I should have it removed. She’s very concerned about the effects it will have on me, because I also have secondary progressive MS, which makes things difficult for me as it is.
This was very informative and I am very grateful for this video. I wondered if there was any thoughts you had on my situation and I realize that it’s only an opinion so no worries. .
Thank you so much for helping everyone with your great videos Doctor 🙏🏻♥️

Hi Dr Westin, I had radioactive treatment around 9 years ago as I had a goitre, as I was hyper. I was on 100mg until last year, when they increased it to 150mg.
This year I changed my diet to having celery juice everyday, gluten free etc.
I recently had a blood test and was asked if I'd changed my diet( whichI have)abd was told to go back down to 100mg, with another blood test adviced in a few weeks.
Is it possible to ever come off levothyroxine completely, as there are books on reversing the disease? with the main food being celery juice. Thank you.

No, did you ask your doctor? if you don't have a thyroid anymore or it is dead , you need the medication. I know what Anthony William is all about with celery juice and gluten free diet (he is right) but he doesn't know everything. Some people need this medication. Hope you feel better!

Hi Dr Westin Childs. I had my thyroid removed in 2010 and like so many, my dr would not put me on a T3. I finally found a dr that prescribed Naturethroid 2 years ago and I feel amazing. The only problem is trying to get it every month, I joke with my pharmacist that heroine is probably easier to get. My question is...should I be taking supplements even though I'm on a T3 now?

I am 72 years old woman who had a thyroidectomy when I was 19. Hyperactive thyroid with goitre enlarged. I was told that 80% of the gland was removed. I improved greatly immediately. Lived normally with no medication or supplements to my mid 30s and lost energy badly and was put on thyroxine. I am on Levothyoxine now I am hypothyroid but very thin? Most doctors say no to T3. Should I be taking T3 as well? I find your talks very informative.

So honestly I know you said in the video that a person must take medication for there entire life so there’s no way of doing with out meds? Just with a healthy diet and some supplements won’t be enough? Would love to hear back from you? I had mine removed by radiation treatment? Was prescribed levothyroxine 0.125 mg but haven’t been on it for sometime. I actually been more up and energetic with seems odd but my energy level is still pretty high but I do feel confused at times if anything I would say my mind at times does seem a bit cloudy but my moods seem really up right now. But I sent my dose strength is it a high dose meaning the strength of it to keep the thyroid function properly?

I had radioactive removal of my thyroid. If I miss taking levi thyroxine more than 2 days I’m foggy and sluggish. I typically weighed 158-168. I’m Right now 192 lbs. I used to be a runner with a high metabolism so running 30-1 hour a day would get me toned and in shape. It has definitely been harder to lose weight. I lost 6 lbs in the last week but I’m running about 3 miles a day to see results rather 1 Mike. Question. In some crazy even where there was a shortage of medicine. What would be a alternative for meditation until I could get some medicine. I went on vacation and my bottle was lost at sea. It got me thinking. In a bad situation what would I need to do?

I just had my thyroid and parathyroid glands removed and had read that I would likely gain weight after the surgery. I had always had a very hard time losing weight but decided to try the keto diet. I lost 30 lbs and it was the easiest diet I had ever tried. Even though it is said you can eat all you want I still ate only until I was satisfied, no more. I have felt so much better. Maybe this would work for you.

Honestly I'm in shock. How is it that no doctor has told me any of this, or checked my T3 and ONLY had me on T4, but mentioned losing weight, in over THREE YEARS now since I became cancer free?! I had thyroidectomy, metasis, 2 rounds of RAI... Dragged out over 2 years of hell... And the docs mention weight loss but zero mention of any of this to me and just a prescription for synthroid?!

Because they're idiot's & are not trained well. Dr. Childs is definitely telling you straight in this video. I've experienced so much since 2012 after having a complete thyroidectomy due to cancer twice (spread to lymphnodes in neck) & radioactive iodine treatment 2x. I'm telling you natural desiccated thyroid hormone medication was a life saver literally for me. It took me 4 years of advocating for myself & hunting for a doctor who'd listen to me. Synthroid almost killed me! It's the absolute worst medication any thyroid sufferer should ever use. It should be discontinued! I've now been on natural desiccated thyroid hormone medication since 2016 & have done pretty good on it. I do tons of reading and research on thyroid & hormone issues myself. Cortisol, ACTH & dhea hormones should be checked as well. Most thyroid sufferers have major imbalances with these other hormones, they go hand in hand together.

If I optimize my T3 to T4 medicine ratio (docs started me out on pure T4, felt horrible, found a better Endo who understood the benefits of T3, but is moving me up slowly on it over the course of like 8 months, started with him at like 75:25 T4 to T3, hoping to keep moving up to more T3 in that ratio) will I be able to function/lose weight relatively normally?
