Just thought I would add this FYI. After much research I found it to be my gallbladder was compacted with fat stones as well as my liver. One day my blood preassure was 73/27. I could have died. I did not want my gallbladder removed and if I had gone to the emergency room I would have next been sent to the opperating table. Instead I did a liver and gallbaladder flush 3,000 stones came out in my first flush and my blood preassure went up. It was not yet normal but it gained 20/20. After approx. 3 to 4 flushes BP was almost normal. After 7 flushes it was back to normal and now I'm on my 9th flush over the past year. So mine was caused by a fatty liver/gallbladder from eating too many carbs such as breads, chips, crackers, beer and cookies. Sugar also helped this. Also note I never gained weight. I'm 51 and lok 35 and athletic build. I hope this helps somebody out there.

Anyway, they left a little piece in and in my twenties, I did a macrobiotic diet which contains a lot of sea veggies and fermented miso, which I consumed daily for years. By the age of 30, I went from possibly having Hashimotos to having grown the thyroid back. That was confirmed by an ultrasound in my thirties when it was functioning normally. I’ve had issues over the years off and on depending on diet and lifestyle. Certain herbs, supplements and foods have been helpful and those have changed with age. When our understandings change, there is very naturally a lag time. Currently we are changing our understandings about how the body works when symptoms are not masked. The last century gave the medical professionals the ability to mask any symptoms that were indicators of imbalances. Some of us are now interpreting the symptoms and correcting the problem. This is very empowering. Thank you.

It now makes sense why she's always in the blankets and close to the heater, I didn't understand why and how she doesn't like hugs, she suffers from psychosis depression, PTSD, fibromyalgia, blood pressure, prolonged heart rates but sometimes she fibrillation takes place, she only does her poop once a week bcoz she is always constipated ,she eats very little but yet has weight increase, often in study room im have caught her weeping and extremely tearful and fatigued inside her bed room when she reads her bible or praying. I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease at 26. Took tapazole to suppress the gland and once it was “asleep” I began synthroid and took both concurrently for about a year. At that time I was taken off both and my glad was supposed to “re-set” itself. Had labs done every 6 months and levels were normal. First symptom I noticed was feeling jittery and nervous. I was always hot. When hot water from the tap poured over my hands my heart would skip beats! It was bizarre. Doc initially misdiagnosed me. I also had fast heart beat, insomnia, severe fatigue and despite eating normally with a great appetite I stayed very thin. It was terrible for several months. Once on the meds I felt so much better. I was told if my gland didn’t reset I would have to have radioactive iodine or surgery. I know several people who have been diagnosed with their cancer and some that have hashimotos or graves. Oh and I was also prescribed a beta blocker called tenormin to slow my heart rate. I remember carrying heavy bags up a flight of stairs and my heart was barely beating. It was weird. I would describe Graves’ disease as having your internal thermostat turned up to “high” and every function of your body was turned up several notches and was FAST. Strange feeling and the anxiety was bad. Like you’ve had 6 cups of coffee but feeling that way 24/7. No fun at all. And it is exhausting. You have no energy because you can’t sleep and you’re dragging through the day. It’s awful.

    • @tofusamurai22

Bonnie: unfortunately, it's not about "watching your diet"; it's about 100% avoiding foods that cause a strong auto-immune response in YOUR body. Everyone is different, and which foods you react to will be different than someone else. It can be helpful to try an elimination diet (like the Auto-Immune Protocol, or AIP) for a period of time (6-8 weeks, at least) to see how you respond. Best wishes! :D

I never had thyroid issues until I had to get radioactive iodine injected into me for an epidural cortisone injection for a herniated disc. I immediately had a reaction the second the procedure was over and my vitals all dropped. BP was 65/40 and heart rate was in the 30’s and I was covered in hives. About 1 month after that I started feeling a lump in my throat like when you’re trying not to cry during a movie. They had me do a CTscan and found a nodule on the right side. I’m convinced the iodine they injected caused this and now I’ve been dealing with bad fatigue as well as esophagus inflammation which I’m guessing is from stomach acid. Worst part is that the procedure for my herniated disc didn’t even help. I’ve gotten to the point that I don’t even trust a regular doctor anymore. But I’m not having much luck fixing my issues on my own either. 😣

How I wish I had heard what you have to say here in this helpfully informative video before I let anyone take out my thyroid. So many people seem to display problematic symptoms with their thyroid, many go undetected by conventional medical protocols. This video will be shared with others so maybe they could be pointed into a clearer direction than I was concerning their own health. Being made aware of the underlying factors concerning the thyroid's imbalances are the key to knowing how to set the direction of how to achieve wellness. Autoimmune conditions seem to prevail in this country to the point where the general population believes that looking and feeling sick is normal.

My thyroid was so bad, when my doctor did bloodwork it was 498. He asked me how I was even functioning, I told him I wasn't. I was like a shell of a person. There are big gaps of time that I don't even remember and he told me that if I didn't go to him I would have died.

Thankyou so much Dr Ekberg! You are the only one I have come across who has mentioned that a TSH of 0.5 to 1.8 can actually be functional hypothyroid. I had a TSH of 1.14 which is considered normal by my doctors and many others online. I had hypothyroid symptoms though so I was left wondering. The underperforming pituitary gland makes sense to me.
It is a shame that many people are suffering and go undiagnosed because of this difference of opinion.

Dr. Ekberg is amazing! I just recently got diagnosed with hypothyroidism and just had a blood test that shows my TSH levels at exactly 1.8. My doctor said everything is fine now because it's "below 5.0" but I don't feel any better at all. Because of this video I realize why! I'm still in the "functioning hypo" range. I'm so frustrated that more doctors don't have the proper knowledge about how inaccurate the most common lab range is. Hopefully I can get my dosage of synthroid increased and/or I will start taking iodine supplements because I'm not a fan of anything that comes from the sea. I have been taking probiotics for the gut so hopefully I will see a difference with that soon.
Thank you so much Dr. Ekberg!

Just thought I would add this FYI. I had (Past Tense) Hypothyroid however it was not due to Iodine. After much research I found it to be my gallbladder was compacted with fat stones as well as my liver. One day my blood preassure was 73/27. I did not want it removed and if I had gione to the emergency room I would have nxt been sent to the opperating table. Instead I did a liver and gallbaladder flush 3,000 stones can out in my first flush and my blood preassure went up.

I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and was told I should get the radioactive iodine treatment. I opted for methimazole instead. I’m glad I did because I’ve been in remission ever since I quit smoking and changed my diet to plant based. I’ve cut down on processed foods and don’t eat dairy, also quit caffeinated coffee. (Drink 1 cup of decaf in the a.m. only.) Last time I was on meds for my thyroid was in 2016. Most recent bloodwork was three months ago, and still good.

God bless you, Doctor. very explicit and answers a lot of questions ive been asking about my health for over 8yrs. thankfully a doctor was able to finally diagnose correctly what i'd been going through just mid last year. this video has shed further light on it. im currently on 10mg (day and night) carbimazole. but before this i had been having serious heart failure issues which i feel is attributable to this thyrotoxicosis condition long before(7 to 8yrs) i knew what it was. but does thyrotoxicosis attempt to cause heart attacks? ive had several of these attacks throughout these 7/8yrs and just alive by Gods grace. I guess my question is- is there a permanent solution and cure and can i go back to feeling healthy again? because for this time period, i havent felt healthy at all.

All my life I struggled to gain weight even though I have crazy appetite. I'm a 6f tall male (183cm) stuck at 72 kg moderately active(in constant motion) around 50 hours per week. When I was actively going to gym for few year years maximum I managed to reach was 82kg of lean muscle mass. I should mention that I'm an ectomorph body type. I've been off the gym for over 6 years now with the same habit of eating at least 4 full course meals a day complemented with snacks like peanuts, pistachios, fruits, other healthy snacks and even casein protein. My mom has thyroid problem and has been on medication for years. I decided to compare these 10 signs and see if any of them apply to me:
    1. High sensitivity to cold (hypo)
    2. Low body weight, high appetite (hyper)
    3. Hair are alright, tho git a lil' bit hair loss like my dad did.
    4. Bowel more like of hyper type
    5. Mood: Hypo
    6. Goiter? No visible clues
    7. Skin: thin, always dry and cracking up to a point you can see blood when temps outside drop to zero or lower celsius. Hyper?
    8. Eyes seem to be ok
    9. Energy often low, can sleep and still be fatigued. To counter it I've been drinking vitamins D3(4000 per day), C, calcium, magnesium and vitamin B complex, omega 3. I sleep a lot and need at least 2 days to recover after high intensity work or workouts. I have awful recovery to be honest, always had. Prolly hypo
    10. Heart. Sometimes I can't even feel the beat on my chest no matter where I place my hand. Hypo?
So in total 5 hypo and 3 hyper. And yes, there could be thousands of other reasons that make me what I am. Just sharing my thoughts.

Thankyou for this information. I had breast cancer five years ago and had surgery, chemo and radiation. Shortly after my treatment ended, I started having issues with my thyroid getting so big it was cutting off my air supply and I had a total of 12 huge nodules. MD Anderson Cancer Hospital had to remove my thyroid. I take Synthroid and another medicine that I can't remember the name of. But, most days I just don't feel great, anymore. Anyway, I always wondered if the radiation for my breast cancer caused my thyroid problems. Thanks for putting all this confusing information into a way that makes a little more sense for those of us without a medical degree.
