I had my thyroid removed in June, 2020 due to Graves disease. Here's some information on what to except when it comes to fatigue after surgery, as the research shows!

Rachel, your videos have been so very helpful, I can’t thank you enough!!!! I watched your most all your videos about 4Xs each before my surgery. I had my thyroid out at the beginning of November 2023, because of Grave’s. The biopsy of the thyroid showed that out of the 7 (under 1 centimeter) nodules two were encapsulated papillary carcinoma. Luckily all margins were clear. My surgeon and endocrinologist said it was good that I asked for surgery over RAI. My Drs. have been so on the ball checking my calcium, TSH, & T4 levels. Even though my numbers are “in range of normal” (T4 normal range being 0.62-1.60) my endocrinologist is still tweaking my levothyroxine because I’m so sensitive so she is also going by how I’m feeling. I started feeling rather hyperthyroid when my T4 was 1.18 on 12/13/23 and I was on 88mcg levothyroxine daily - my symptoms were a little bit of pounding heart, anxiety, and not sleeping well. The Dr. put me on 75mcg and after four weeks felt rather hypo - fatigued, and a bit depressed. On 1/9/24 my T4 number was 0.99. So this past week I’ve been taking the 88mcg and next week I will alternate between the 75 & 88mcg for 3 weeks and then recheck. Already feeling a bit better. And now I have a pill box to help me remember that I took it and which day is what dose of the levothyroxine - haha. I’ve always taken vitamins daily but never a medication. I was hesitant to put my numbers up because everyone is so different and we tend to compare - I have a friend who is hypothyroid because of Hashimoto’s disease, she still has her thyroid, she’s taller than me and she takes a 100mcg daily. That would send me over the edge. I’m 5’5’’, 123 lbs., 64 years old. I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 20, and sober for over 30 years. We are all different and so is our healthy journey. Thank you for the reminder that it is a balancing journey of the right dose, taking care with proper nutrition, sleep, and water. And to have patience and persistence but most importantly hope and love - you give us hope and love!!!

Your post was really helpful also. It is a great reminder that we are all on a different health journey. The hardest part for me is that I have always felt so good about not being on any medication and I am so sensitive and can't take even allergy and cold medicine. I am nervous about Synthroid and need to ask when to add back my supplement's! Good luck :)

I guess I am lucky, had half my thyroid removed in December and I am taking my tablets. Had fatigue for about 4 weeks, after that installed a kitchen at my daughter's home. No fatigue, had my blood checked after 6 weeks, values OK.

Im under remission for months now from Graves disease and my doctor mentioned that if it comes back i will either get RAI or surgery. I think base on the comments in this video that even you get RAI there is still high chance of getting graves again. So i think i will go for surgery. I also have a feeling that Graves is back. Which is why i have been watching videos to know whats the best approach. Its nice to know that its not that scary. Your channel is a blessing. Hope to watch more of you. GOD BLESS.

Thank you for your continued information. I have opted for surgery and more concerned about the after effects than the actual surgery. I'm 70, in fairly good shape, a vegetarian, and excercise regularly and take no medications other than vitamins. 7:11 . I'm worried about the fatigue side effect so this has been helpful information. I am glad you are still doing well.

I am a 65 yr old female who is 10 years post op x2. Recurring 3 times. Lymph removal the second time. Radiated iodine x2. Alcohol ablation of persistent lymph nodes. Fatigue is real and ongoing. My Levo dose was lowered due to PVCs/PACs. And on beta blocker. It’s a balance.

Thank you for making this video. I have to make a decision on surgery or RAI next month have wondered since I have Graves if they typically take the whole thyroid versus half. ❤

Rachel, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! You are competent, informed and so positive! I started watching your video's a month before I had a total Thyroidectomy 5 days ago. Between the wonderful folks at ThyCa and your video's I really felt prepared and in a position to be an educated self-advocate! I am 64 and feel fairly good on day 5. I had several multi-nodule goiters even through I never had TSH and T4 levels that were out of range. My FNB came back positive for atypical cells. Just waiting for my pathology results to come back :) You are truly helping so many of us, Thank You.

7 years and counting. My life has never been the same since my TT. My symptoms resemble those of ME/CFS. Endocrinologist says nothing else can be done. Functional medicine doctor has put me on supplements, and there has been some improvement. But I think I’ve reached maximum improvement.

I got diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease and was given the option to have it completely removed or start hormones and leave it in, but my doctor did say since I have a sibling that has an aggressive and rare cancer that when you have an Organ 4:07 that is not really working or is like technically like dead it’s more Susceptible to becoming cancerous I don’t know what to do 😭🥺

Hello! Caffeine can affect people in different ways - some people can choose to limit their caffeine, especially in the afternoon/evenings, and that can help prevent fatigue due to problems sleeping. But it's just one of the many pieces to the puzzle of fatigue - so see what works for you! For example, I have discovered that I can't have caffeine after 3 or 4pm otherwise it keeps me up at night. But I love coffee and consider it part of a well balanced lifestyle myself :)

There are actually no articles that deal with the treatment of this Thyroid fatigue. This fatigue is not the type that is cured by sleep. Studies do indicate that improvement over time however there is a significant percent that do not improve up to 4 years. These studies indicate that all the patients hormone levels are within normal limits and the fatigue is caused by you having your Thyroid removed and no other factors. Unfortunately this is my case.1 year post total thyroidectomy. Please discuss with your surgeon the quality of life issues related to your surgery prior to having it. There may be other ways to deal with your condition that does not involve the total removal of your Thyroid. The studies concluded that doctors should discuss QOL with their patients and consider doing fewer TT's as a result. QOL was not discussed with me. Many doctors take a nonchalant approach and just say that the difference in your quality of life will be just taking a pill daily. This is not the case in a large percent of TT patients! Ask a lot of questions on this subject.

I’m finding that getting my medication adjusted is hard. The range is fairly large. My endo seems to believe less is better. Which just keeps me in hypothyroidism and weight gain and fatigue. What do you consider “normalcy “. Thank you. Had mine out 38 years ago.
