His team did a great job from 30k out, making sure that he was there or thereabouts towards the end, but the train went to pieces before the final km. Cav's ability to pick the right wheel, see the gaps, know when to open up, see when the rider in front is about to blow etc etc. Phenomenal.

I was drunk in a pub with a random guy named Greg that had asked for the tour to be on TV, When I heard him yelling at Cav I knew I had a partner for the day, we were jumping with anticipation 10km before the line, we explained that we were cheering for a Britain racer to beat the record, and people just got arround us cheering for the "light blue guy", by the end, there was beer flying and free shots being given arround.. What I thought would be another lonely TdF stage watching, became one of my fonded sporting memories with 10 or so random people that I'll probably never see again. Thank you Manx Missile

Not sure our commentator knows what is meant by 'standing on the shoulders of giants'. Sprinters arguably do win standing on the shoulders of their teammates and lead-out trains, but Cav hasn't surpassed Merckx by standing on Merckx's shoulders.

To be fair, Cavendish used to be the "bad guy" in bunch sprints too. I'd say he's mellowed a bit with time. There used to always be lots of argy-bargy with him and some of the other sprinters and leadouts. Reason is that MC is relatively unconventional (like McEwen before) - they don't need/have the leadout trains that Cipollini did and instead surf and bump their way around other sprinters' teams.
An example is the stage 1 crash in the TdF that started in Britain (2014?). He tried to follow a gap that didn't exist and crashed Gerrans out. To his credit, he did apologize afterwards - this was already some personality advancement!
